It's too bad this dim sum spot doesn't get better reviews. My personal opinion is that it should be at least 4 stars. The service was friendly and fast for us. The food was delicious and authentic. It is Hong Kong style ordering from a dim sum menu rather than the Cantonese cart order. Although the menu includes many of the traditional dim sum, it lacks the variety of Cantonese dishes. However, the plates we did order were tasty and plenty. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomach. My favorite was the shrimp rice noodle roll and baked egg tart. Must try! It's located right off the 163 fwy in an unassuming little strip mall next to a popular Vietnamese restaurant. Parking was crowded on the weekend during the busy lunch hours, which to me says that the locals consider this a hidden gem. Overall, if you're craving dim sum, don't overlook this spot. Very underwhelming experience that left so much to be desired. We were seated pretty fast, but that was about it. The dim sum menu is very small with limited options. They're dishes 5.99 each, not per person which was a misunderstanding. When we tried to order, the manager seemed irritated and rudely explained that we had to mark what we wanted with a dry erase marker that had never been given to our table. We decided to only order 3 things as we already had a bad feeling. When the manager finally bothered to come back to check on us, he immediately said one of the dishes was unavailable while barely glancing at what we had marked. We waited maybe 15 minutes for one dish to come out, the rice noodle bbq. For lack of better words, it tasted like it was stinky. The meat was not soft at all and the noodles seemed overcooked. We waited another ten minutes until another waiter finally bothered to come over only to tell us that the second thing we ordered was also out. I don't understand how a dim sum place can run out of potstickers, but okay. At that point we were ready to go. When we tried to pat, the manager did not want us to use a card to pay. Keep in mind, we only received one dish. Our total should've been $5.99 plus whatever tax was. We gave him a $20 and he tried handing us $3 back. Absolutely not sir. When he asked us if we were sure because we'd ordered two things, we said yes we did order two things but only received one because the other dish was apparently also out. The manager offered a half cheeked apology and said we should've came earlier. Needless to say we will not be coming back. The staff and manager seemed to have very traditional views. I had errands in the area and wanted dim sum for a late lunch. Tried this place because it had decent reviews and was new to me. I ordered pan-fried gyoza, siu mai, and BBQ pork buns (there are no pictures on the menu so you have to know what you want). I was the only customer when I arrived. There were 2 tables of staff having their lunch. Someone did wait on me quite quickly and brought menus, tea & water. It took longer than it should have for a server to take my order. The food arrived in good time; it was hot and fresh. Siu mai was the best - flavorful, nice shrimp. BBQ pork buns were light and fluffy, but the filling was very bland. The gyoza were huge compared to the meat inside, fried well, but no flavor and were served with an odd red sauce. I would have ordered a main dish to go, but the server never showed up again. I had to wave her down to get the check and ask for my extra food to be packaged to go. Another server came to pick up my signed tab. As he grabbed it from the table, he asked if everything was good as he rushed off. I couldn't have answered the question without flagging him down - it's obvious he didn't really want to know. The interior is very clean and pleasant looking; the restroom was clean (a big plus!). Several more tables of customers arrived before I left. All in all, a pretty ordinary experience. read more

I'm used to being able to see the dim sum before ordering, so the text-only menu made it harder to know what each dish was. The dim sum was ok. A new place for dim sum and Chinese food. Our regular Dim Sum restaurant had a line around the door so we decided to try something new. Went to Kearney Mesa and found a great spot. The Shu Mai was smaller and a bit on the chewy side but still good while hot. The orange chicken was devine. Sweet and soft and slightly saucy. The mixed chow mein (chicken and shrimp) was also very tasty. Shrimp rolls, black bean riblets all delicious. I couldn't ask for a better lunch today. Oh, and the jasmine tea is totally authentic. A nice taste of jasmine to complement your meal. The restaurant is in a food court strip mall so parking was a slight nightmare. If you can go behind building you can find street parking. Otherwise, you'll have to wait in lot for exiting cars. The staff was friendly but certainly overlooked those sitting in the front. You have to make sure you order all you water, forks, extra napkins, chili oil, or you will wait a while. I'm a pretty patient person, but I couldn't ask feel others around me weren't quite as patient. Give it a try. Food is pretty good. And a bit on the $$$ side. read more

Came to try this new spot in Kearny Mesa. If you like authentic Chinese food you'll love this place. The people here are super friendly and offer great advice on menu options. I was here for lunch and love that they had a lunch menu during the week. We had the Kung Pao Beef & Peking Duck. Both very tasty. I preferred the Kung Pao Beef. The food was good. We ordered shumai, egg rolls and pan fried gyoza which were delicious but there was barely any filling in the gyoza. The food was made fresh to order and it was good but the reason why I probably won't be back is due to the service. The service was terrible. We were the only people in the restaurant when we arrived and it took him about 15 minutes to take our order. Once he took our order we waited about another 30 mins to get our food and had to stand up to look for him to ask for napkins, a water refill and again to get the check. I visited this spot alot in the old days when it was Golden City Restaurant.  Now it's named Hong Kong Kitchen + Dim sum Dim sum was all hot and fresh.  They were made to order and took about 15 minutes to come out. Bbq pork buns had a mild pastry outside with a sweet glazed bbq pork.  Bbq pork was tender and moist.  Loved the mix of sweetness and 5 spice powder flavors. Har gow had a nice mix of flavors from the mild rice based wrapper and the shrimp filling. Siu mei had a delicious filling of shrimp, pork, and mushrooms. Large won ton soup had alot of won tons.  Loved the flavor from the mix of pork and shrimp.  Tasted just like the siu mei.  I would have liked some veggies and noodles. Bbq pork pan fried noodles had slivers of carrots and shitake mushrooms.  Loved the bold flavor from the shitake mushrooms.  Bbq pork was tender and had delicious 5 spice powder based flavor.  Brown sauce was pretty good.  This was a great tasting dish. This place took over Golden City. It's large and has lots of seating. From first look the sign doesn't really stand out. The lettering should have more contrast. A red sign with white letters or something. It looks just like a pure red sign to me. I have to zoom in on the picture to read what it says. Like the "grand opening" sign below it. See what I mean?! We had a reservation and glad we did as the place filled up after we started eating. Some dishes were better than others. My biggest thing is that THEY put in the order for the wrong item or brought out the wrong thing despite us circling them on the paper menu. Ordering is like dim sum style. When you order things they print it out and put the reciept on the table and check them off when each item is delivered. We ordered stir fried beef chow fun, when they came back with the receipt they had ordered satay beef chow fun with gravy. Luckily my friend reads Chinese and caught it and brought it to their attention. They brought out the proper stir fried chow fun which was good. The noodles were fresh and springy, the beef sliced thinly and tender. They were out of a few veggies so we went with string beans with ground beef. The beans were the right consistency, not too firm or soft, the ground beef added a nice contrast and flavor. I thought the dried scallop fried rice was rather bland. The texture was good, not mushy and nicely fried. I just wish more flavor. We had ordered the salted fish, chicken and tofu clay pot but what arrived was the salted fish, chicken and eggplant. Odd because we circled it, but on the receipt they ordered the eggplant instead of tofu. We were fine eating egg plant instead but it comes with ham ha (fermented shrimp paste) which is quite pungent and one of my friends is allergic to shrimp. It would be nice to know what's in each dish. We also ordered a 3 item BBQ of Peking duck, cha siu pork and cold ginger chicken. The duck was tasty and had a nice crisp skin, the cha siu was thinly sliced and tender, the chicken was moist and had good texture, but I thought the ginger sauce was overly salty. Overall a good meal just a few missteps with ordering and not all the ingredients being listed. The parking lot is rather large but there were cars waiting for my spot as I left so I suggest going early or during off times. It shares the parking lot with Anny's Fine Burger. Finally a dim sum place that's comparable to Bay Area / LA ones. We ordered a good amount of the dim sum classics and all came out pipping hot. Shrimp Rice Roll - the shrimp had a nice "bounce"/bite. Rice roll itself is thin and good amount of sweet soy sauce. Steamed Gai lan (Chinese Broccoli) - thick stalks but super tender. Shrimp Ha Gow - The dumpling skin is better than a lot of other SD places, but the filling is definitely delicious. Chicken Feet - Right flavor, right color, and it's fresh. Sui Mai - surprised how big it is. Tasty filling, definitely a must order. Turnip Cake - wish they had some sort of sauce to go with it (XO, mustard, etc). Still delicious though. Steamed Pork Ribs + Rice Rolls - another one of our favorites Mochi Sesame Lava Balls - This was the only dish we had a MAJOR problem. The inside filling (sesame) was not sweet at all, mochi didn't taste fresh, and the powder outside tasted a little weird. It's like eating cardboard. We did notify the server and they made it right and let us pick another dessert of similar value. We ended up picking the brown sugar steam cake and so glad because it's light/airy/fresh and just the perfect amount of sweetness. Currently it is my favorite SD dim sum place. I was excited to learn about the grand opening this week of a new Cantonese cuisine restaurant that took over a longtime tenant's space in the Spectrum Village of Kearny Mesa. This is the first business in San Diego for the owners of Hong Kong Kitchen & Dim Sum as I heard they have other interests in the Bay Area. Parking in this lot can be challenging at peak meal times. I visited on a weekday afternoon well beyond lunch hour so it wasn't an issue for me. The interior decor of the suite didn't seem to have changed much. The capacity was still around 100 customers with several tables along one side of the room that could be reserved for a banquet party. A menu booklet contained photos of numerous entrees. There was also an order sheet with dim sum items, noodles, rice, and BBQ/roasted meats. Hot tea was offered at $2.50 per person. It has been a while since I last ate dim sum in SD. Prices have increased substantially since the end of the pandemic, and the upward trend is not ending. Many items were encroaching the $10 price point which makes dim sum less of a value group meal than it used to be. Unfortunately, these prices seemed to be on par with the competitors in the Convoy District. I chose the following for lunch and also ordered the Stir-Fried Beef Chow Fun to take home. * BBQ Pork Rice Noodle Roll * Shrimp Har Gow * Tangerine Peel Beef Balls For a quick assessment of the dim sum quality, some diners look at the wrapper used in the har gow dumplings. In my case, the filling was very good, however the wrapper was sticky and fell apart as I used chopsticks to pluck each dumpling from the bamboo steamer. Another litmus test was the rice noodle roll quality in the cheung fun. The filling was once again above average, but the rice noodle roll was not silky smooth as I have experienced elsewhere. The beef balls were fine, and the portion size of the beef chow fun was great for the price. There was a good 'wok hey' to that dish too. The cost of the tea plus the above four items was nearly $50 pre-tax and tip. Based on the value and the quality of the food I tried, I gave a 3.5 star rating for Hong Kong Kitchen & Dim Sum. I do plan to return with a larger party so we can share some of the main dishes because I noticed there was an extensive variety of which several were reasonably priced. read more

We saw the grand opening sign and decided to give this new Hong Kong restaurant a try. Their menu is what you would expect! Lots and lots of different options! Some are very fancy like the lobster or crab dishes, but some are tour standard Chinese bbq dishes. We decided to try something new, the bitter melon dish. It is delicious! Much better than what we expected. The two meat combo was really really good. We love the duck! Highly recommend. The seafood stew was so so, that's why I gave a 4 star. We came for dimsum on a Sunday. Got the sieumai, beef rice rolls, chicken feet, turnip cake, and tripe. Tasted each one and someone at the table spoke up which confirmed my taste. All bland. I asked my mother which is from south east China to confirm if this is normal and she said maybe they're trying to be healthy. We had pastries though (egg tart, baos) which were good! Something about the meats were off. 5/10 for food. The service was lacking. I know Chinese places have a certain pace and service but this was kinda weird. We needed a refill of hot water in our tea pot and traditionally, we flip the top. We even moved the tea pot right next to the walk way. The waiter walked by 4 times before I stopped counting. I raised by hand in front of the waiter while staring at him as he stood 5 ft in front of me and he looked through me for 5 seconds and did not notice me. He turned around and walked away like he was day dreaming. I looked at my wife in disbelief. 2/10 for service. The ambiance was good. The plastic table covers are convenient for cleanup but it gave me a low class kind of feel. The tables were wobbly and they had folded up paper to keep them balanced. Not really classy. I'm so happy that there's a new Chinese family style restaurant in town especially after the closure of China Max. They offer an extensive menu of Chinese dishes and dim sum and everything we had was delicious! The inside looks exactly the same as the restaurant prior so I do hope they do upgrade the interior eventually, but nonetheless, I'll come back for their food! There is ample space inside and since it's off the main convoy area, the parking isn't too terrible. Service is great and attentive and our sever was super friendly and nice. Finally got a chance to try this new spot. I thought most of the food was decent but the service was lacking. I enjoyed the turnip cake, har gow, siu mai, and ham sui gok. Least favorites were the egg tarts and green beans. Felt like both could have had more flavor. Other dishes we got were bbq pork pastry, sticky rice, pai gwut, and shrimp rice roll. They seemed to need more servers. It was hard to place our order because they didn't give us a pen (luckily we had one) and no one came to take our order for a long time. You fill out what you want on a piece of paper, no carts here. Also, took a long time for someone to take our payment once they gave us the check. In fact, we had to go up to someone. Good food at good prices. Good portions. We had Peking duck, squab, dim sum, steamed fish. Especially loved the steamed fish. So fresh. I'll glad that the taste of Hong Kong chef and crew are here. A surprisingly spacious restaurant, I would say the quality of the service wasn't without errors and some of the food items were lacking in execution. The big thing was that they were slow, it was super odd that the 3 item BBQ dish came out practically last when things just needed to be butchered. And either marked the wrong thing from what we ordered or tried to give us wrong things. The great thing was that our toddlers enjoyed the salted fish fried rice and were entertained by the TV monitors displaying a LNY parade. I personally really liked the BBQ pork. They sliced it really thinly, it was juicy and had a nice sweet crust. The toddlers also liked the desserts - Portuguese egg tart and egg yolk bun. We used to come here when it was Golden City and wanted to see how it is now under a new name so we came for dinner. Aside from the name change, everything seems the same. The interior hasn't changed too much. The decor seems simpler. They have good selection of menu items. We ordered what we usually got before such as seafood tofu soup, beef chow fun, MaPo tofu, house special seafood fried rice, and steamed fish. They were all good - the same as when it was before. Service was pretty quick. Parking can be challenging during peak times. I will come back to try the dim sum. read more

This is located in a smaller outdoor strip mall with decent amount of parking. Came in on a Tuesday evening at 7pm and there were a few groups in the restaurant. Service was friendly but we were handed two menus and I inquired about if they have pan fried noodles. I was told yes and not to worry bc it's not on the menu. Salt and pepper wings- slightly over fried only on the outside batter, which gave it a little bitterness. The chicken was cooked perfectly inside and it was well salted. Served with fried garlic and jalapenos. Snow peas with garlic - nicely cooked with good flavor and nice amount of garlic. It is pricey at $25 but a good serving size. Pan fried noodles with beef- was looking more for the hand rolled noodles pan fried with some vegetables. It was more in the style of crispy bird nest noodles, however only the edges were a little crispy. The beef was silky and there was a good amount of sauce but it needed more flavor. While the service was very friendly the food took a very long time to come out. Our wings and snow peas came out after about 25 minutes and we had to ask about the noodles about 40 minutes after ordering. They did expedite them and apologize. If dining with children like we were this can be a real problem as it extended the meal and the kids were hungry and then restless. For the price point and the amount of time the dishes took to come out I will probably not return unless something changes in their staffing or work flow. Also felt that for that price I could get food that was cooked and seasoned better elsewhere. read more

I've been to Hong Kong Kitchen and Dim Sum in Claremont Mesa three times now, and I can honestly say the food has been consistently excellent every single visit. For a restaurant that's been open less than a month, that's impressive. The dim sum is probably the best I've had in San Diego. Everything tastes fresh and well-made, not rushed or reheated. My absolute favorite is the BBQ pork puff buns. The outside is flaky and light, and the filling is sweet and savory without being overpowering. They serve their full menu all day, which I really appreciate. Service is still finding its rhythm. You can tell the team is learning to work together, so it runs a little slow at times. That said, everyone has been friendly and trying hard. The owner is from San Francisco, and it shows in the quality and attention to the food. Parking can be tough during the weekday lunch rush, so plan a few extra minutes to find a spot. Overall, I'd rate the food a 9 out of 10 and the service a 7 out of 10. My family and I remember back when this place used to be called "金城" / "Golden City" (https://www.yelp.com/biz/golden-city-restaurant-san-diego). It was ok back then, it is barely ok now. Family ordered some basics, you had to suck to mess that up, and it was barely acceptable by fundamental standards. Simply put: We did not enjoy it BUT, perhaps the chef does better on other items on the menu at the time. Classic 兩面黃 with a small variety of dim sum items, all classics of basic "Dim Sum". Not fresh. Not great. PLENTY of room for improvement. Serving size makes no difference here apart from wasting perfectly fine ingredients. We are not in a rush to return BUT, perhaps this cooking is simply not for us. Service, no concerns. Environment, non-issue. You place your orders on a paper that has the dim sum menu. Place is clean and the regular dinner menu looked really high quality so I had good expectations for the food. Presentation for the food looked nice however the food was lacking in flavor in most of our dishes. The beef tripe, beef cheong fun (rice noodle), chicken feet, siu mai, and turnip cake tasted bland. Not sure if they were trying to purposely make them taste healthy by putting less seasoning but it really tasted like it was missing something. Tripe tasted like it was just boiled in water. However the baked pastry stuff were decent like the baked cha siu bao, egg tarts, and bolo bao with custard. Customer service was also lacking. Took forever to get our tea pot refilled. One of the waiters seemed to have his head in the clouds the entire time. Don't think we will be coming back anytime soon.
