Im not from the area, and I tried out this area during my visit. It is one of my favorite dinner spots in SD!! To start off, I really enjoy the appetizer and sides bar. They offer tofu skin, seaweed, chickpeas, guava hard candy, watermelon, and other snacks (with sauce/spices provided). It is free! Just take as much as you need and dont exploit it. I had 2 plates The skewers here are amazing. A little bit pricey (around like $5 each order, with like 2 skewers each), so that's the downside. The bill will rack up pretty quickly if you are not careful. I also liked the oysters my buddy and I ordered. The food here is so amazing to the point my buddy could eat the garlic, even though he typically didnt like diced garlic. I wish I ate more here I also liked the free ice cream at the end. Just 1 per person, play by the honor system and dont ruin it for others Overall amazing experience. Waiters typically left us alone, we were trusted not to eat all the appetizers, and the food was great. I mostly wish it was a little cheaper, and the lights could be a little lower to fit the night vibes. Additionally, the AI posters bother me a little but thats not the biggest gripe
Really enjoyed this Chinese skewer spot! The food was delicious and everything we tried was very flavorful. The biggest downside is the price. It can get pretty expensive, especially if you're ordering a lot of skewers. It's pretty easy to do because there are so many things on the menu that look good. One thing I really liked was the free sides, appetizers, and sauce bar. They even have free ice cream to finish things off! Service was really good as well. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive! They play a lot of very Chinese, karaoke-style music, which I love lol.
Midnight Skewer is the first eatery to reopen on the second level of the reconstructed building that is anchored by China Max in the Convoy Pointe Plaza Shopping Center. For some reason, there appears to be only one way to reach the upper level and that was a staircase in the back left (northwest corner) of the structure. Maybe there's an elevator somewhere that I missed because otherwise, it's not a handicap friendly setup. Parking in this lot is awful if you come during peak meal times. The ambiance felt like a cross between an izakaya and a karaoke bar. They do have a stage in a corner for the latter if you want to test your singing chops. A modest condiments and snacks bar was near the lobby up front. More sauces and oils were needed as the variety was paltry compared to other similar places. A freezer containing complimentary cups of ice cream was also placed near the front. The menu was available via a QR code. You could place an order online based on your table number. The categories were much broader than just skewers. I would argue that despite the business name, the other categories like Tin Foil Dishes, Midnight Clay Pot, Stir-Fried Dishes, Specialty Side Dishes, and Grilled Fish & Stir-Fried Shrimp were featured more prominently. The last seemed to be a hit with some of the other reviewers although those dishes were pricey at just under $40 for a serving. I selected some basic Specialty and Vegetable skewers for my late afternoon meal. Beef, lamb, pork belly, and tofu skin enoki mushrooms were my choices. The meats came as four skewers each while the mushroom was presented as two skewers with three pieces on each one. There was minimal spiciness to the meats as I requested because even at a mild level, I have seen such skewers taste very salty. The enoki mushrooms were wrapped with tofu skin which I thought was unique. They were earthy and filling. One cup of ice cream from the freezer was offered as part of the dining experience. Matcha Green Tea, Strawberry, and Vanilla were the varieties. I selected the first which came as a lime green color that had a strong matcha flavor. Midnight Skewer caters to the night owl crowd as they have a closing time well past midnight every day. I gave a four star rating for my recent visit.
Amazing service, very attentive servers. We came around 5:45 pm on a Sunday and were seated pretty quickly. Closer to 6:30 the restaurant was packed and there was a wait. Everything we ordered was great!! The group favorite was definitely the spicy grilled fish, great for sharing and big groups. If you love garlic, the grilled eggplant has a mountain of garlic on it. Things I wish they had or will have: larger variety of skewers!! More options would be great. Also a larger sauce bar. The sauce bar is free but for sauce is mostly the Chinese vinegar. I'm not a huge fan of the vinegar and was hoping for other sauce options. Next time we want to try the snails. There was live karaoke playing both English and Chinese songs.
Came at 6:30 and waited about 10-15 minutes for a table. Skewers and fish were really good, it had that authentic spice of Chinese bbq. The meat wasn't tough and had a great balance of fattiness and meat. The free all you can grab appetizer were also delicious!
I kept seeing the sign for this place and wondered when it would open. Yesterday I found out it was worth the wait. They have smaller dishes like skewers, shareable entrees like whole fish, beer, wine and karaoke. They have it all! The smartest thing they had on the table which I thought was pretty cool, your table has a hole at the end of it for trash so nothing gets piled up on your table. It's a genius idea. The vibe is pretty cool in there, kind of reminds of some k-bars in DTLA. Definitely coming back again!
Very nice spot to have a late night dinner. I really like the atmosphere here, feels like back to China. Foods here are authentic and delicious. I also like they have a free snack stand. The service is quick and friendly. We will be back.
This place is fantastic! A great late night place to go, very lively! We stumbled on this place when looking for dinner at 10pm and will absolutely be coming back. We ordered wonton soup, chicken skewers, and a tomato egg dish. All delicious! The service was also super fast. Such a fun spot! Would highly recommend!!
My wife found this place and we decided to check it out. Best decision ever. We tried the spicy fish, fried rice, and some skewers. Everything was a 10/10. We even really enjoyed the karaoke. Exactly what we have been looking for in San Diego. And the prices are very fair. We will be back, a lot.
One of the best bar food place around. Portions were good and flavors were intense. Best perk was the karaoke stage for entertainment. Definitely a destination spot for a Saturday hangout with friends.
Delicious skewers, a free condiment bar with watermelon and ice cream--what's not to love?! We ordered lamb, beef, shrimp, mushrooms, and rice cake. We especially enjoyed the garlic eggplant--a standout dish. Must love garlic though as there's probably half a bulb of minced garlic topping! Everything came out hot and fast. I saw this place just opened and decided to give it a try while I was in the area. I will definitely be coming back and bringing my friends! The food was great, service was excellent, and I liked the ambiance inside. I can imagine coming here late at night for some beer and skewers. Beef/Lamb skewers: 9/10, the meat is very tender and flavorful, it would've been slightly better if it came out sizzling hot, the grill is just for presentation. Eggplant: 10/10, might be slightly awkward to share since it's one big piece, but the flavor was really good. If you like garlic, definitely get this. Pork intestine skewer (not pictured): 10/10, probably my favorite way to eat pork intestine from now on, it was very crispy and didn't have too strong of intestine flavor. There is a nice complementary snack/topping bar, I would probably have gotten more from it if I wasn't a little short on time. There is also free ice cream that was pretty good. Overall, I would recommend trying this place out! Just note that the parking in this plaza can get really bad, but if you come late at night it probably will be fine.
My friends, their kids, I and the wife and our kids came to San Diego for sea world. Was gonna stay Friday night so we can go on sat am. We used to live in San Diego 6 years ago. We were looking for a BBQ place that's not ayce and it has to be Chinese BBQ. We stumbled upon midnight skewer at the China max plaza, wow a lot of things changed in this plaza. Midnight skewer looks new so we tried it out. We DID NOT regret it. The food was good, esp the BBQ lamb and the fish. Kids loved it too. There's someone at the karaoke at the time and she sang pretty well..if you're here, please applaud if they're really good at the song they sang. The staff here are attentive and they really care about your experience

Food was amazing and the staff was especially kind and attentive. They also have Karaoke so people will sing throughout your dinner, it was a lot of fun. Prices are decent. Food comes out quickly and made to order. Decor is so nice and makes you feel like you're not even in San Diego. The only noteworthy small detail is that it's pretty small restaurant. Go early or go late at night since they open until 2am to avoid waiting. Parking is awful in this area as well (this is not this establishments fault just plan accordingly.) read more

Came here around 9:30pm on a Thursday night and surprisingly there was a wait. It wasn't too long though, less than 10 minutes to seat a party of 4. You order through a QR code on the table and send it in to the kitchen directly. I'm not sure if it works 100% because a couple of our dishes we selected didn't make it into the order we submitted, so we had to check in with the servers multiple times to see if we had various items in our submitted order. They have a handy hole in the table that acts as a trash bin for the skewers and whatever else being thrown away so I found that efficient. Let's talk food, for skewers that stood out I'd highlight the beef skewers and the tofu skewers. Both seasoned well and didn't need additional cumin/chili which they provide in the self-serve bar. The fried mochi was actually very pleasantly good as well, and I liked how big the portions were for the cucumber salad, corn cheese, clams, and the whole fried fish. Overall I liked that there were seafood options! The self-service bar was a nice touch, they had boiled peanuts, roasted peanuts, mala seaweed, mala edamame, shrimp chips, fresh watermelon slices, and even guava candy. The self serve ice cream had chocolate, matcha, and Thai tea flavored single serve ice cream. Overall a nice new addition to Convoy especially because they're open until 2am! They also have the option to karaoke!! Definitely do not come here if you're allergic to peanuts, they have it in practically every dish. read more

It looks like this place is new so I'm very hopeful they can work out the kinks that made them a 4 star instead of 5 star experience. The establishment is cozy and comfortable- somewhere I can really see myself hanging out. They have a snack bar where you can help yourself to all sorts of goodies (from watermelon slices to roasted peanuts to seaweed salad)- such a cool concept! Their food is delicious as well, you can't go wrong with the skewers and the baked oysters were humongous. The wonton soup was good as well- very refreshing. The only issue I had was it took many tries to get my tsingtao beers ordered and brought to the table. I placed the order thru the QR code and I had to ask on 3 separate occasions before they finally brought us the beer. They were actually giving us the bill and we had to inform them we never got the Tsingtao despite asking more than once. I'm sure an honest mistake but once they get all the logistics and systems worked out I'm sure they can get that last star. read more

TASTY skewers!!! it's a bit on the pricier side BUT you get FREE ice cream. FREE snack bar with watermelon, peanuts, sauces, noodles, etc (behind the ice cream). and FREE karaoke!!! 10/10 for good vibes good food read more

Authentic Chinese BBQ and grilled fish! The grilled fish is highly recommended, it has very few bones. As for the skewers, the grilled eggplant and Wangzhongwang sausage are absolute must-tries, one bite took me straight back to China read more

Great new skewer place in San Diego's Convoy area. The atmosphere is on point and is a great place to bring your friends. It makes me feel like I'm in a restaurant in Beijing. The food was amazing and definitely is in the upper tier of skewer places in the area. I would say that the best part was the service. Everyone was extremely attentive and very kind, and didn't hesitate to help my girlfriend and I out with any of our requests. Would definitely come back again! read more
