Our project took over 2 years from planning to completion. A lot of the delay and frustration was due to our city requirements, permitting, city staff, etc. Most designers and contractors would have given up. But we had Gary and Zach and Kayla from Living Green Designs and they complied with everything that was needed over and over again. There was never a delay on their part. We had just moved into a home that had a newly remodeled interior, but we needed someone to design our front and back yards. Zach and his team were fantastic. The project began with a phone consultation to get a sense for our design preferences, gauge the scope of work, and provide rough pricing estimates. Our plans changed drastically with the discovery of shallow utility lines running through our property. What could have been a total disaster in less capable hands became a stunning focal point. Living Green Designs repurposed an existing bench adding silver sheens in planters with built-in drains and lights, flawlessly matching the tile and concrete work to the rest of the patio. They also completely redid the existing plantings and added a small water feature. All this completed on time without busting our budget. My backyard was a hodge podge of outdated and decrepit features added to the home over the years. There was a fireplace smack in the center that was broken, mysterious gas/water lines running under and over the ground, iron fences that were badly corroded, a jacuzzi that was closed and turned into an ugly planter or sorts... the area needed a serious update. Nothing extravagant, I mainly wanted to clean up and make the area be more functional for my family. All the companies I found through ND and personal recommendations had a pretty high budget threshold - $100K or higher so that made the search difficult. I also sometimes felt snubbed for not offering that much money to work with them. Anyway, my selection criteria was: 1) Offer design service 2) Be able to handle both hardscape and landscape 3) On-site construction staff be employed by company vs. independent/3rd party contractors - I wanted to make sure the workers were properly vetted by the company for security/liability reasons 4) Accommodate smaller budget (under $100K) 5) Have proper license and insurance I found Living Green Designs on this platform of all places, and am glad I decided to work with them. The company is led by two guys - Gary handles the design and Zach owns the execution. They were a pleasure to work with - Gary helped me to come up with a plan and Zach was on-site pretty much every day and completed everything close to schedule. I've had both good and bad experiences with contractors, and these guys are definitely one of the best. I felt like I received the full value of what I paid for, not that remorseful feeling I sometimes get when I feel like I overpaid for under-par service. read more

Zach and team did an outstanding job completely transforming our back yard this year. It was a long project, involving quite a bit of demo to take out a large in-ground pool and overgrown planters which hadn't been maintained in decades, and building up a great new entertainment and play space for our growing family. Through the whole process living green has been responsive, cheerful, happy to work through evolutions in the design (as we realized more fully what we were working with) and we couldn't be happier with the final product. My only appreciable lesson learned on the project (our first major remodel) was to make sure to exercise the detailed design phase and/or be explicit in the points of the design that you have clear intentions for. We had a couple minor go-backs during construction due to some crossed wires on aspects of our BBQ/Fire-pit design which could have been avoided with a little more conversation up front, but that being said, everything worked out fine in the end. I called Living Green Designs on the basis of a few very positive reviews on Yelp. Our front garden was installed about ten years ago, using native California and Mediterranean plants for a low-water-use garden. Some plants have died or not thrived, while some are overgrown---it needed refreshing. I spoke to Gary on the phone and explained briefly what I needed. The first thing he said to me was, "How much is your budget?" That seemed a little premature, since he hadn't even seen the property, but I told him about how much the original design and installation had cost. I made an appointment to have him come to my house. i asked him if he was familiar with using native California plants, and he said, very dismissively, "We work with all the plants." (But he didn't seem to know about or recognize some of the California natives in my garden; he appeared to think a native California iris (not then in bloom) was a weed. Gary was supposed to get back to me with at least a preliminary estimate, but never did. Not too surprising, I guess. He didn't even leave a business card. My old backyard was a mixture of overgrown plants plopped all over, thick ugly grass with all kinds of biting insects no matter what I applied, a cracked patio slab, a 30-year-old yard that was in bad need of a makeover.
