I had ruled out the upstream O2 sensor, catalytic converter (both new), MAP sensor, and fuel injectors. I explained all of this to Matt before bringing the car in. He assured me they could perform deeper diagnostics with their equipment. After dropping off the car, Matt called and told me they had "confirmed" exactly what I had already told them, and that the next step would be pulling spark plugs--for an additional fee. At that point, I decided to go elsewhere. What I don't understand is why I was still charged the full $85 diagnostic fee, plus a $4 hazardous materials fee and $3 shop supply fee. Plugging a car into a diagnostic scanner does not generate any hazardous waste--no fluids are drained, no chemicals are used, and no parts are replaced. There's nothing about a basic scan that would justify a hazardous materials charge. That kind of fee typically applies when disposing of things like oil, coolant, or other regulated waste, none of which occurred here. In the end, I paid $92, wasted time and gas, and learned nothing new. The most concerning part was Matt admitting he didn't even know spark plugs would need to be checked as part of further diagnosis.

I requested a conventional oil change for my 2009 Lexus ES350. I presented a $20 first-time customer coupon. Instead of applying it, the technician tried to charge me an outrageous $88. They did not provide a printed estimate or explain the high price. When I pointed out the $20 coupon sitting right next to their computer, and showed the second employee my Toyota receipt, the employee completely ignored it, brushed it aside, and claimed they would give me a "special $10 discount". Even with their random discount, the price only dropped to $72, and they still refused to tell me exactly what services were included for that amount. For comparison, my regular Toyota dealership in Claremont charges me $63.23 out-the-door for a conventional oil change, fluid top-offs, and a full 44-point inspection. Valvoline is running a textbook bait-and-switch operation here--luring people in with big coupons, inflating the base price, and refusing to honor the advertised discounts.
