Before I came to the restaurant I read a review titled "Pay once eat twice" and I couldn't agree more. When I was walking into the restaurant a friendly Italian gentleman stopped me outside and said "you're in the right place. This is the best Italian place is the best in the state." He couldn't be more right. Most of the staff including the chef have been working at the restaurant over 30 years. Our waiter was a "new guy" a 4 year long employee and provided great service, hospitality, and amazing menu suggestions. If your are in the area this restaurant is a must visit. read more

I've driven down 4th street dozens of times and I've never noticed this place existed until we went for dinner. It just blends in with all the storefronts and closed businesses. Upon entering it appears small and old fashioned but there is much more seating in the back. The restaurant is very casual yet the menu is quite expensive for the area. But like others have said, portions are huge. Some of the biggest I've ever seen. Since it was my birthday dinner and my parents were paying I ordered the Seafood Fra Diavolo which was $41. I'm not kidding when I say this was so big it was served on a platter rather than a plate and had more seafood than pasta. Unfortunately I didn't find the food itself as impressive as the portion sizes. Bigger is not always better. The sauce was thin and the seafood was just mediocre. I also tried some of the fried calamari which looked great but just tasted kinda bland. I did however enjoy the leftovers slightly more than my original meal. read more

We tried to come here Thursday night and they were all full so I made sure to call Friday morning for availability that night and was successful! Make sure to leave yourself plenty of time to park, as parking in downtown Troy is a mess and quite vicious. Our table was all ready for us when we arrived and our server quickly came by to get us started. The have a nice and extensive menu and we had a difficult time narrowing down our choices. I settled on the chicken parm and my husband had the chicken milanese. Each of these entrees came with a small house salad to start and a side of pasta. I was able to upgrade my pasta side to have bolognese. The salad was a nice way to start and the blue cheese dressing was tasty. I will echo all other reviews here, the portions are huge! You will leave with left overs unless you share. I barely finished about half of everything. That being said I am certainly not mad about left overs from here! Everything was delicious. The chicken dishes were not greasy. The sauce on the parm was tangy and rich. The pasta was cooked to a perfect al dente and my bolognese was to die for, so savory and rich without being too heavy. Food was deliciously seasoned, prepared and presented by expert and dedicated chefs (credentials/certifications of the original chef and owner can be found on the walls of the restaurant). Portions granted a great bang for your buck. Homey and comfortable seating and decoration, would recommend for a nice but not too fancy date night out. Dessert that was available that night was the lemon blueberry cake which was light and fluffy and the right amount of sweetness and tanginess, perfect to end the night with. So, we had a date night last night. I had never been here. My husband recommended it and we met friends. The waitress of 25+/- years brought our drinks. When she went to put mine down, she hit the small plate and the drink went flying and the glass broke. The sticky drink was all over the front of me, my legs the table and floor. She wasn't going to change the table cloth, but I started rolling it up. Glass was broken and it was wet. Really? We ordered. She wasn't very attentive and we had to ask for refills. Here for work and wanted Italian. I eat dinners alone all the time and I have experienced it all. The restaurant was small but cozy. You can tell this place has a ton of regulars based on the handshakes between staff and customers. As an outsider they made me feel welcome. I ate great food (pasta carbonara), I was educated on the history of Troy by a regular and was treated wonderfully by the staff. Paul was a great bartender. Our dinner brought us to this oldie but a goodie in downtown Troy. Upon arrival we were greeted by an old friend which gave the evening a promising start. Looking to try a new appetizer, we ordered the escargot. It arrived in a large bowl with a scrumptious sauce complete with roasted red peppers, mushrooms and capers, and of course, tender delicious escargot. For dinner I ordered the Veal Scorcese, which we were told was created in this restaurant for Mr. Scorcese during the filming of Age of Innocence many years ago. It was a wonderful dish in a rich beefy sauce with artichokes and mushrooms. It also had a side of fall vegetables and some mashed poratoes. Kudos to the chef for a delightful dish. This is probably my favorite place to eat in the Capital District. I say all the time if somebody was visiting from out of town and you can bring them for one meal, the seafood fra diavolo here is the meal. As you walk in it reminds you of something from a movie. Dim lit old school setting. The service is always fantastic. The portions are over the top. The prices are unbelievable. The seafood fra diavolo is enough to feed easily two people. You can go in there as a couple get the seafood fra diavolo and a bottle of wine. sstill tip your server and be out of there for less than $100 with enough leftovers for 2 days. We called for reservations probably about an hr before we wanted to be seated and it was no problem. Upon walking in we saw why- they have 3 separate dining rooms with large spacious tables. Upon exploring the menu, my better half had 1001 questions and the waiter was quite friendly and helpful about it. He went through multiple suggestions of great dishes on the menu and a few of us ended up ordering some of them and we agreed. We started off with the calamari which was served with more of a cocktail style sauce rather than a marinara. It was a great starting dish. The meal started off with some warm bread which is always a plus. Among the party we ordered the veal Giuseppe, the broiled scallops, the fettuccine Bolognese, the fettuccine con cognac, the veal Sorrentina and the red snapper mugnaia. The veal Giuseppe was a hit! It was stuffed with crab, provolone and basil and covered in a roasted red pepper and onion cream sauce. I opted for the fettuccine con cognac but subbed the prosciutto for chicken. This was their version of a creamy pink sauce and it was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals and there were no real misses. The average price for a dish was $20 give or take a few dollars (mostly give) but really the portions pretty much justified the price. Each entree comes with bread, salad, a side of pasta and a side of potatoes! Enough to feed a small army (for a week)! So a major perk for me was the lefties I can eat the next day. read more

I came to this place with low expectations. The outside of the restaurant has a black door and does not look inviting, however the food is AMAZING! I went there for lunch and got the calamari marinara and it is like they gave you an entire box of pasta. So be prepared to be stuffed and have leftovers. It was perfect. I also got the fried mozzarella which is also out of this world. The only downside was the service. The waitress seemed annoyed that we were there but the food was so good that I can't not give it five stars. read more

Came to visit my sister in the area and found this place through yelp. We had a reservation and when we arrived, we just had to wait a couple of minutes for the table to be ready. We ordered clams casino for appetizer and for entrees, veal saltimbocca, veal Giuseppe and veal Sorrentino. The portions were huge and the side pasta that comes with the dishes were also very big. It was definitely enough for 2 or 3 meals. I ordered my side pasta with garlic and olive oil and the only thing I didn't like was that there was a ton of red pepper on top. Everyone was satisfied with their meals, but we were all very full halfway through the entrée as the dishes were very heavy. Oh, this place! I just recently moved into the area and what with cooking myself and being a city girl, I'm definitely a tough critic. I cannot believe I'm saying this but this place beats any place I've loved, growing up in Queens and Brooklyn. For a place to have great sauce is a big deal. We went to Lo Porto for dinner to celebrate my sisters birthday and I was so pleased that this was her choice as her favorite restaurant in town. The owner greeted us and spent a little time chatting before we started our meal. We started with a fresh salad and I tried and enjoyed the citrus dressing. They cracked fresh pepper and they grated the Parmesan cheese for the salad. I had the Shrimp Michael with linguini. It is made with a pink sauce that is excellent and not too rich. My family was generous enough and I also had the opportunity to sample two other meals, one with scallops and a filet mignon. Oh my, they were all so good. This is a place I would come back to many time a year if I was a local. My husband enjoyed his meal and enjoyed the private room that they use for larger groups. The picture does not do it justice. I took more than half home with me. It was priced at $24.95. I enjoyed a glass of Semi- sweet Reisling with it. My husband and I split the appetizer. It was perfect for 2 people as dinners are large. He had the Veal Parmigiana. It wasn't overly breaded and was very tender. The sauce was delicious and as an Italian I rarely like a restaurant sauce. His dinner came with a salad. The entree was $22.00. He had a nice glass of Pinot Noir- very reasonably priced. We were too full for dessert but NEXT time I intend to try some.
