LO PORTO WAS SO-SO Let me start by saying that my first visit to Lo Porto was in Fall 1994 when I was just a freshman at RPI. I asked my Residence Director to recommend a place that would impress my uncle that was coming up for Family Weekend. Well, it sure did the job. I still remember what my uncle said after dinner was over: "He's been to Italian places all over the world, but the food here was PHENOMENAL!" And so the bar was set. For the last 17 years Lo Porto's which is hidden away in upstate New York on a small street in downtown Troy would forever be against what all restaurants would be compared. And I've been coming back up here for the last 17 years even though I have lived near New York City since the late 90's. My usual table is the one over-looking the balcony (ask for Table #7 when reserving a table for 2). So, my wife and a friend decided to go there after heading up to RPI for alumni weekend. On Saturdays, the restaurant opens at 5:00 PM, so we made a reservation for that time. When we arrived we told the hostess that we had a reservation and she began to lead us upstairs past my usual table on the balcony and into their backroom. We had a reservation for 3, so I can understand why they couldn't seat us at Table #7, but there were plenty of other tables on the second level and couldn't understand why they were hiding us all the way in the back. When I asked the hostess why she was seating us all the way in the back, at first she told me that the tables had been reserved. I then reminded her that WE had a reservation ourselves and that we had driven about 3 hours up there from NYC and could have anywhere but in advance we had chosen to go there. I should probably make mention, that this was not the first time that I had gone up there with my wife. About 3 years ago I went up there with my wife for another alumni weekend event and I was very excited to show her my "hidden secret" in Troy. Unfortunately, that night was less than spectacular and my wife could not understand why I always carried on making such a big thing about this place. I assured her that it must have been an off night and could only hope that she'd give this place another try. Fast forward to the present day. We ordered the Escargot Maison ($12.95) - Escargot Stuffed Mushrooms Caps in a Zesty Cream Sauce with Garlic. However, the description fails to mentions the fresh diced tomatoes and capers interspersed throughout the dish. The 3 of us devoured the appetizer and it was every bit as good as I remembered. For my entree I ordered the restaurant's signature dish, Veal Scorsese ($24.95). My wife was indecisive of what she wanted to order and did not see Penne Vodka on the menu, so the waitress suggested that she could have my side pasta which was included with the veal and that the chef could prepare it with their cognac sauce which is similar to vodka sauce. How could anyone turn down an offer like that? When the meals came, my veal was as excellent as I had always remembered it to be. Even my wife admitted that her Ziti in Cognac Sauce with mushrooms and prosciutto was as well prepared as any Penne Vodka she had anywhere else. As other reviewers have mentioned, the portions here are insane and you will definitely be wrapping up part of your entree to bring home. The big surprise for us came when we received our check. The menu lists the Veal Scorsese ($24.95), but the check showed the charge for that portion of the meal as $32.90. When I asked the waitress how much extra it cost for the Cognac Sauce she confirmed that it was $7.95 and said that it was because it was cooked to order. At that price I probably would have just asked her if she could prepare a 1/2 order of pasta for my wife and still give me the side of pasta that was included with my meal. The problem I have is that she did not tell me about that the additional charge was so exorbitant. To close this up, on this visit the food was much better than our last visit. Good enough to convince my wife that we should come back here again on our next trip to RPI. The biggest problem that I had was with the service. I have seen prices increase by over 60% in the time that I have been coming here. This is not the fault of the chef/owner as price changes can be attributed to inflation and the increase of his materials. Unfortunately, I can't find any reason for the consistent drop in service. I did appreciate that our waitress asked us if we had tickets to a show and were in a hurry. However, I could not understand why the hostess tried to hide us away in the back when nobody else was in there. We stayed there long enough to see her put a few couples that were 40 years older than us in our surrounding seats on the balcony. It would have been nice if she mentioned about the near $8 surcharge on the pasta, there should never be surprises when the check arrives. A bad start and a bad finish to what could have otherwise have been a better rated evening. read more

As a child up until my early w0s i frequented his business the Sign of the Tree at the Empire State Plaza. We would go for the ambiance, the consistently delicious food and beautiful presentation of each and every detailed dish. It was my Mother and I's special space. I have been lucky..yes lucky enough to have had their amazing appetizers and entrees on more then one occasion. Believe the hype they are fabulous!!! Michael LoPorto and his staff deliver delicious decadence that makes your heart sing with each bite. From their mozzarella balls which are perfectly prepared and deliver a crunch served with the delicious sauce on the side, to their mouth watering chicken parmesan gently tucked under a fresh and flavorful marinara sauce..it doesn't stop there. The desserts the apertiffs the pasta all made fresh all the time. When I heard about them participating in Restaurant Week I jumped at the chance to come out and try their specials. I ordered their New England Clam Chowder and almost fell off my chair..there were huge pieces of potato and delicious chunks of clam in a delicate cream broth...i wiped the bowl clean with their fresh baked bread and paired it with a glass of Riesling. I have had clam chowder everywhere you can imagine....Once again LoPorto's has blown me away. They have some great specials right now so get to Troy!!!Hurry up!! 2nd time here. We arrived at 5:15 and were the only people in the place. It was like a private dinner. We sat at the "prime table" at the top of the stairs overlooking the bar area. The bread was hot & fresh, the romaine salad with the home made Italian dressing was tasty. I had the chicken cordon bleu. It was very good. A bit too much Prosciutto but very good.
