In this modern age of Fro-Yo and gelato, an interesting philosophical question is whether good old fashioned (say 6O+ years!) ice cream will still be in vogue. Loard's is such a place, and we decided to try it out after a super spicy BBQ pork dinner at Tofu House. Loard's is located in a strip mall with plenty of parking next to two gas stations and easy access to I-680. It's connected to a Mountain Mike's pizza with no walls between them (both have same owner according to our cashier). They had over 30 flavors with basic flavors and a few interesting ones like Ube and Burgundy Cherry. We shared a single scoop of Toasted Almond and enjoyed it - crunchy almond bits, smooth, more icy than creamy. Sweetness was just right for us. 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4 since location is convenient, store is really clean, and good service. Personally, I'm more of a Fro-Yo and Gelato guy than ice cream. However, last month I was in a spirited debate with my coworkers over who has the best ice cream. I've made a mini self Yelp Challenge to try, that way I can see where Loard's fit in. Here's was my coworker's list: 1. Mitchells in SF (I haven't tried but hear its legendary) 2. Bi-Rite in SF (I haven't tried it) 3. Cloud 10 in Houston (I tried it at Roost and it was pretty awesome) 4. Three Twins - I find these in grocery stores and haven't tried them yet. I have great memories of Loard's Ice Cream from my childhood but this place ruined that for me. The ice cream was chewy and seemed like it had melted and was refrozen. The worker was not friendly and kept insisting that I give a cash tip. She also seemed irritated that I asked for a receipt. I should have noticed that there were no other customers and the ice cream in the case looked melted. I also should have read all of the reviews prior to coming to this location. This place gives Loard's a bad name. It's connected to a Mountain Mike's, and both feel like they're half of what they should be. The Loard's section looks gloomy, sad and uninviting. The ice cream selection is okay, but doesn't look appetizing. They don't do sundaes, even though it's on the menu (which sounds like it's been going on for years....how does Loard's corporate even allow this?). You can't pay at Loard's, you have to pay at the Mountain Mike's section. My receipt actually says Mountain Mike's and not Loard's. The best part: When I finally ordered a small scoop of ice cream, the employee was scooping it and actually said it was hard and difficult to scoop. After all that, because I'm a Loard's fan I still bought a small scoop for $5.50. Mistake. The taste wasn't terrible, but it did taste a little old. I'm a small business owner and thoroughly believe in supporting fellow small businesses during the quarantine lockdown! Today, my husband and I decided to drive here and get ice cream for us and our two girls. I can say that the ice cream may have been good at one point but what they served us was the gooey frost bite on top. I sat in the car with the girls while my husband went inside and got them. Why serve the nasty leftover ice cream to your limited customers during this rough time? I would assume you would take greater care and make sure to retain those that come in. Well, I wish I had a different review than everyone else, but I don't. This location is part of Mountain Mikes and even though there was no one in either restaurant, it took several minutes for anyone to greet us. They seemed very uninterested in helping us when they finally did, and it turned they were out of bananas for my Fudge Ana. Looking at the ice cream while we waited it was all very low and shiny, if that makes sense, like they don't restock often and it melts. We didn't read any reviews when we got here and we approached it with a fresh mind. When we walked in the lights were off. The employee approached us and took our order. Although she was prompt and courteous in putting together our order, after tasting our Dusty Road sundaes, we noticed an old freezer icecream taste that lingers in your mouth, the malt powder tasted stale, and the presentation was sloppy and unrefined. Their plastic spoons are as flimsy as a compostable straw. We've been to other Loards locations (Livermore, Castro Valley, and Moraga) and have always had positive experiences with our go-to Dusty Road. This location did not measure up. I love Loard's ice cream! I do! I came to this location and noticed that they did not have banana ice cream in a pre-packaged quart size. No biggie. I asked Raj (owner) to hand pack a quart size for me. Raj told me that I could not have a hand packed quart size because there wasn't enough banana ice cream for future customers who may come into get the ice cream. Yes! Think about it? I am a customer asking to buy the rest of the banana ice cream but I can only have three scoops of it (Raj's compromise) and not more because he won't have it for other customers. No... there was no one else in line asking for it. There was no one in the ice-cream part of the shop (it's connected to a pizza restaurant). Yes, there was enough to hand pack a quart. Please don't go here. The owner is obviously very cheap and he doesn't understand the value or the concept of customer experience. I understand that every business is about profit (I'm a business owner myself) but this operation is obviously frugal at the expense of customer satisfaction. Seems he only hires the cheapest labor possible who doesn't understand the customer, but I firmly believe it always starts from the top. Lots of issues of cleanliness, value for money, etc. It's so obvious the owner does damage control after a bad comment instead of preventing bad comments. I think this is my first one star review. We picked Loard's Ice Cream to get a celebratory treat and ended up disappointed instead of pleased. The man who "helped" us was unpleasant, argumentative and should be trained on proper customer service. Rather than working with us to provide the sundae we came to buy as listed on the menu, he told us we had to choose one of the topping and would not include both toppings as listed on the menu on the wall. I grew up going to Loard's (back when it was in Danville & Alamo) and have always looked forward to their awesome ice cream and sundaes. I don't know what all these negative reviews were talking about. I've been to Loards all across the Bay Area so me and my family have tried many of the company's flavors with some favorites. The mint chip ice cream and Mocha almond fudge tasted like the original Loards flavor me and my family love! There was a sweet girl working there who quickly helped me and my family with our orders. Nasty! After seeing the employee handle cash at the register I asked him to please wash his hands before scooping my ice cream. After thoroughly washing his hands he dries them off paper towel, with the same paper towel he proceeded to wipe his mouth and clean his nose. Unacceptable! I wish there was an option for ZERO STAR just like their SANITARY PRECAUTIONS and CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!!!!! So i went to get ice cream from this loard's ice cream parlor. There was nobody to attend customers at their ice cream counter. After five minutes of ignoring a standing customer on ice cream parlor side as they have pizza shop connected together, one Mexican employee lady showed up and started serving without gloves. I wanted a waffle cone one scoop ube ice cream. She didn't use gloves for holding the cone and after scooping the ube ice cream which was messy and melted already, she handled me with tissue. I mean does it even make sense when you are serving without using gloves and meanwhile other brown lady employee using cashier computer with gloves on. How can I expect that they wash their hands before serving when they are not using gloves to serve food. Are these employee even get proper training or something!!!!! After the lady handed me the ice cream , she went again to the pizza side and never came back. I waited there to get new cone and a scoop and pay my bill because this serving was really unhealthy and unsanitary but she never came back. I was waiting for somebody to help me out , another brown employee, but she was completely ignoring me and then after waiting for while i put the waffle cone ice cream upside down on the counter and left. I normally give this Loard's 4 if not 5 stars because they actually carry my favorite ice cream flavor, Ube. Ube is a traditional Filipino dessert and my favorite ice cream flavor. It usually is not carried by non- Filipino ice cream shops. So when I found it here I wad overjoyed! This visit, however, they had run out and weren't going to have any for another two days; which does nothing got my current craving. So I had go with a backup flavor, which I still enjoyed, but wasn't what I was thinking about on the drive here. read more

Loard's has over 40 flavors, recipe unchanged over the years. wonder how this accounts for ube and green tea which probably aren't original flavors eats: coffee (2.95/scoop) 4.95 for 2. -intense coffee flavor -more than 1 scoop, maybe 1.5 scoops drips: -ube tasting almost flavorless, flavor very slight. -service imbeccable. got one sample and cone, no problems no one else here. -has interchangeable seating with mountain mike's pizza next door. 3.5 stars, not all flavors are on point. read more

We NEED a Loard's Ice Cream Parlor in the Tri-Vallley area. To my count, this is the 4th one in the last 15 years. I hope it's a keeper this time. Like every other Loard's I've been to, it's clean, simple and bright. All of your favorite flavors, some timeless Loard's classics (like Double Dutch), and some more exotic ones like ube. It's still opening week, but the single scoops were very generous, and the sugar cones were as fresh as they could be. This is seriously good ice cream (and not a lame, overly-gimmicky national chain whose name I won't mention, but it's initials are B and R). This location is not any better (or different) than others - BUT IT'S VERY GOOD AND IN THE TRI-VALLEY AREA AND IT'S OPEN!!! The parlor adjoins the Mountain Mike's Pizza, and there is an interior opening between the two. It's just behind the Shell Gas Station right at the Alcosta exit from Hwy 680. Seriously the worst! I got one scoop of ice cream on a sugar cone and he LITERALLY scooped (1x) a small bit of ice cream on there. You know how normally one scoop is a mound of ice cream because they take the scooper and shovel it a few times to make a scoop? Nope. Not this place. They just do one literal itty bitty scoop. Ugh I'm so mad I didn't take a pic so you can see what I really mean. It's about 2/3 less than a kids scoop from cold stone. So bad. Other thing you might want to know - he was cashiering at the pizza section taking cash. Then he walked over to the ice cream section, didn't put any gloves on, and just took a napkin to grab the cone. But you know, you adjust a little and then he's touching your cone. We had a terrible experience this evening when we went to get ice cream as part of a fundraiser for our school. While I can understand slow service, the shop was not busy and I have concerns about hygiene and service. And at the end of it, they did not take action when we told them it was for the fundraiser, lessening the donation they will be providing to the school. We will not return to this store again. Hygiene: the server was not wearing a mask, but was wearing plastic gloves. Before helping us, he went from the ice cream counter to the cash register and handled cash, all without changing his gloves or washing his hands. He came back to serve ice cream, wearing the same pair of gloves throughout. This is completely unsanitary. Service: It was exceedingly difficult to communicate our order. The server seemed unfamiliar with the cups and cones and the ice cream flavors. For each of the individuals in our party, we tried asking for the ice cream by name, then pointing and correcting once or twice before he identified our selection. When ordering a cone, he tried to give us half a scoop and we had to ask him to remedy that and provide a full scoop. Fundraising: We came to the shop tonight because they had a program to donate a percentage of sales to our school. We told the sever this before we paid and when we asked to confirm the school would get credit for our order, he said oh, I needed to know earlier.
