Through my complaint to the State, I've learned he's an UNLICENSED contractor that "borrows" license numbers. For my project, he used the license for Santamargarerita Development, who said that he used it illegally. So, I'm going to court to recover money. The job started, then things stopped. He took draws, like for the pool equipment, but didn't buy any equipment. The pool he started is not the one we designed, and the work kept getting worse. He wanted $3200 to fix his error on pouring the wrong pool. He did say that he was good at tile, and when it was time to get it, he wanted me to pay for it, after I had given already him money for the tile and pool equipment. I sent him pictures of how we wanted the stonework, since he was doing something completely different. When I pointed it out and showed him the picture I sent him, he said no problem, then proceeded to do another piecemeal job, until I had him stop. After paying him nearly $70,000, seeing the wrong pool, no work for months, a project almost a year old, my backyard torn up, and ongoing messy and bad work, i gave up trying to work with him. It was ridiculous to do business this way, given the lies. So now, I've spent another $40,000 to have someone else come in, fix the errors, and finish the pool. I warn everyone, steer very clear. He appears very nice, and does not listen to what you want, my backyard was completely torn up for months, he does bad work, and takes money for things he doesn't provide. Here's a short list of examples, most I fixed or hired someone to fix: Represented as licensed, but is not. Gas and electric lines had to be separated, per city. He didn't. 240v electric circuit was missing one wire.(A $500 fix) Big gunnite piles left all over yard. (Concrete) Trash left all over. Stone work so bad we had him stop. Pool poured is not what we agreed on. Pool is above grade, making things difficult for landscaping. Spa so deep we had to add stairs. Spa jets too low and partially in seat. I dug the trenches for him. After 6-months, I filled the trenches. He failed to get electric inspection. He failed to get setback inspection. He often had work promised, and nobody showed up to do the work. New pool installer had to repipe all of the pump and water lines. Auto-fill installed too low. Water line for auto fill only a couple inches below ground and visible in spots. And more... He's offered to repay me, but I haven't seen a penny. Hence, going to court. Ugh. A total nightmare.

I was quite impressed with the Yelp reviews of Melo's Pools. I sent a quote request via Yelp and had a response within 10 minutes! Appointment was set for five days later. Albert and Pablo arrived to my home on time. They measured, took pictures and assessed the pool along with the pool pump system. We discussed ideas, timelines, finance options and they left me with a book that contained sample ideas. The following week I met both of them at their showroom to look at the actual tiles and find a match for the pebble. Albert and Pablo were great at making suggestions and giving me space without any pressures of making a decision, signing a contract, etc. A couple weeks later I signed contract and a demo date was set. The crew was on time the first day, and that stayed true until end of project. To no surprise there was a leak detected after opening up the plaster. Mauricio, the project manager, brought it to my attention immediately. He showed me the issue, explained what needed to be done, had a plan ready to go and with my sign off they had the issue fixed expeditiously and the project was kept on track. As a matter of fact, the project was completed a week earlier! Even my neighbors commented how quickly they worked and how great the pool turned out. From Day 1 to the end, the entire crew was respectful. Mauricio kept me updated on the progress of the project. Even after the project, Pablo and Mauricio came back (each separately) to ensure all was good. Since it was a Sunday evening, almost no one picked up. And the two people who did said they couldn't come. Fortunately, I was able to talk with Priscilla at Ortiz Pool service. She was extremely accommodating and asked for pictures of the pool. After I sent them, she quickly responded that she could send a person out to us within 90 min and gave us an accurate quote for service. The serviceman, Julian, was extremely professional and took care of the problem quickly. An hour or two later, we were all enjoying the pool. Ortiz pool service saved our trip!
