Upon entering the cashier at the front welcomed us and introduced us on how to order as well as the restaurant concept. When we sat down at a table, one of the workers promptly came by to wipe down our table and even picked up a scrap of paper off the ground under the table. They were very attentive and had positive vibes. The place was packed on a Wednesday evening, and it took about 20 minutes for our food to arrive. The TV screen conveniently shows your estimated wait time which I appreciate. It was also accurate. Once we got our food, we went to the sauce station. Strangely all of the ketchup packets were sticky. The BBQ bacon burger from the Melt was good, although the bacon was more like ham and not crispy at all. It had a lot of flavor nonetheless. Temporarily coming out of Yelp retirement to write this. Why? Because I am as interested in the how and why of this place as the what. The "how": Prior to opening last month, this space had been under construction for over a year. That's right, a year! This brings so many questions to mind, like... Why did it take so long? How could they afford the rent with no income coming in? Etc. The "why": It will be interesting to see if this place has legs because, for many of the food options they offer, there are multiple nearby competitors in the same shopping center. Let's break it down: Boba Guys (Bayhill Vietnamese Bistro serves Thai Tea.) Proposition Chicken (Carls Jr, Big Mouth Burgers, and Hashes and Brews all serve chicken sandwiches.) Square Pie Guys (Roundtable Pizza serves pizza, naturally.) The Melt (Carls Jr, Big Mouth Burgers, and Hashes and Brews all serve burgers.) Humphrey Slocombe (Baskin Robbins serves ice cream which isn't in pre-packaged pints, and Mollie Stone's sells pre-packaged ice cream at more or less the same price point.) Only the Boba Guys (the boba part at least), Napolito Tacqueria, Sushirrito, and Milk Bar serve niches that are otherwise unmet within the plaza. So I'm left wondering what kind of market research was done for this to determine what to feature. (Actually I do have some inkling; see the attached photo taken on June 23, 2023.) Even before getting to the actual quality of the food, I would have loved to have seen more novel options here. (Per the image I included, it seems like they were considering Thai at some point.) And then, also, novel options or not, one only gets a fraction of the typical food choices from any of the individual "kitchens," meaning, for example, that The Melt's celebrated shakes are nowhere to be found. Having said all that, I'll finally get to the "what" and describe my first experience eating there. First and foremost, it's awkward that it's generally expected that one has to order online in advance so as to not have to wait a long time. Indeed, Local Kitchens seems to assume that everyone would want to take their food to go as there is otherwise insufficient seating for the number of people who do seem to want eat there (such as myself and my perennial date). This is interesting in so far as, just a few months ago, before they opened, there seemed to be a lot more tables in there. For my first visit, I decided to try the "spicy extra". I felt like the quality of the chicken was good although the bun was lacking somewhat. The sauce tasted roughly similar as what one gets on the spicy chicken sandos at McDonald's. Altogether, I don't think it was obviously better than the other options that circle the exact same parking lot. I also got a "strawberry fields" with boba from Boba Guys. I liked it, but I do wonder if I could feasibly show up for a boba drink without having to pre-order. Otherwise, this isn't really viable as a go-to boba place. Maybe at some point I'll try just getting boba and report back. So, yeah, this isn't exactly a glowing review, but it's also not a damning one. I'll definitely be going back if for no other reason than I work nearby and go to that plaza frequently for food. Next time I'll most likely be trying the pizza, which I suspect will be notably better than Roundtable. read more

There were no available tables, so we took our food home. We had a pepperoni pizza from Square Pie Guys and it was wayyy to greasy for me. My husband thought the layer of bread was too thick. My wife and I are big burger fans. We love trying burgers at new spots, both locally and when we're traveling. So when we heard about "Sweet Onion Burger," a new place from a well-known chef, we decided to give it a try. We ordered "The Overachieving SOB" and "The SOB." Unfortunately, the burgers were bad. While they looked appealing, the taste was off from the first bite. A strong burned flavor overshadowed everything else. When we opened both up, we found burned areas that weren't just char spots. Both burgers were simply burned. Although the patties were a decent size for an inexpensive burger, the ground meat was of low quality. It had a gritty texture with occasional chewy bits, and I even found a tiny piece of bone, which I had to spit out. The caramelized onions were soggy and not caramelized properly. nitpick: "The Overachieving SOB" included jalapeños, which I would have preferred to leave out, though it's possible to request their removal when ordering. Hard to say what we disliked more: the burned food or the low-quality meat. Overall, it was a disappointing experience that we felt we should warn others about. We haven't tried other options at this place and can't comment on them. Went for Dinner Food - 5/5. Square pizza pie had a good bite on the dough with a crispy crust and bottom. The cheesy crust made the pizza a bit too rich, with the tomato sauce not being enough to counterbalance it. The regular pie itself felt a little lackluster, but I could easily see the potential with some toppings. The fried sandwich was phenomenal! The batter to meat ratio was excellent with crispy batter and juicy meat. The juiciness was very surprising as the meat was chicken breast yet it maintained a moistness that could rival other chicken sandwiches that use chicken thigh! The spices balanced out the heavy fried flavor, pickles gave a sour and fresh bite, the mayo added creaminess and the dense potato bun brought everything together. Milk bar cookie was thick yet fluffy with the corn flakes adding a fun texture. It was very sweet but just below the level of sweetness that would make you thirsty. Service - 4/5. Order is done via kiosks to which there are multiple. Seating, picking up the food and water is all self service. I did see staff go around cleaning the tables periodically, which is always welcome. Value - 5/5. Prices vary per restaurant but from what I've seen the pizzas are in the high $10s to mid $20s which is on the expensive side for a smaller, 4 slice pizza. While waiting for our food and just watching the general atmosphere, my party and I acknowledged Zayd's welcoming and positive energy while working in the store. The time estimate for when food is ready is wildly inaccurate! We ordered by noon and got an estimated time of completion in 30 minutes. We arrived around 12:30pm, after the timer on the order page has finished counting down. Our order was still not ready at 12:55pm and I had to leave to not miss a meeting.
