I had a very odd experience today at Lochels. The little bakery was packed and while standing in line, I took a photo of one of the many cakes, sitting out uncovered, on the counter to send to my family and ask if I should purchase it. One of the workers in the back asked if I was taking a picture, I said yes? And she first said, " I would rather you not." Feeling uncomfortable, I said "okay" but my mother who I was with asked why. She got rather rude and said "the board of health doesn't allow photos to be taken." I thought the situation was rude and I could tell something was odd about that comment, as in many other bakeries, I have been encouraged to take a photo. I looked it up later because I found it so uncomfortable, come to find out, the board of health would likely be more concerned with the amount of uncovered cakes to be sold out amongst such a large population of people. I've always shopped at Lochels, the baked goods are good, but after this weird experience I question what else they may be doing that the board of health would find concerning and I will not be returning. read more

Was really excited to try this bakery since there isn't many cupcake bakeries around. Found the place on a busy road had to pay for parking. Went in the store the lady was talking to two people about a cake order and completely ignored me for ever 5 mins, the phone even rang she told someone to ask it. I will waiting more people came into the store finally someone came out to help. None of the cupcakes have flavor descriptions on them so I just had to guess what it will taste like. I got a red velvet and banana flavored one. I've had great cupcakes so I know flavor this cupcake was the worst cupcake of my life I could have gone to a grocery store and gotten one with more flavor. I'm not one to normally leave a bad review. I was sent to pick up a cake, and when I went to pick it up at the time I provided, it did not even have the writing on the cake yet. They also didn't even have a lid for the top of the cake to transport. Very unorganized. You would think a bakery would have the proper boxes. Also very overpriced for a simple cake. This bakery has been a life saver for me. My son loves glazed donuts and isn't a huge fan of traditional birthday cakes. Every year I am able to order a cake size glazed donut for his birthday. This rating is not for their expensive product. They do produce great donuts and some other items. I do not mind paying extra for a good product. I do, however, have an issue with poor customer service. I have been a customer on many occasions and each time have never experienced great customer service. It always seems like it is an inconvenience for the staff to assist a customer. Today proved to be no different. Today, the unprofessionally dressed, indifferent staff barely acknowledged me and definitely offered no closure to the encounter. The one individual is always there in the morning but clearly is miserable regardless of time or day. I have decided that I will no longer go to Lochels. Horrible service. I've ordered there multiple times now and I will go in at or after the scheduled time and my order will not be ready. Today my order was completely wrong. Yikes! The big tall lady who is either a manager or owner was incredibly rude to her employees when I got in at 8am on 12/21. I get there's stress from the Christmas rush but there's no need to be that miserable towards other people that work for you. It really made the atmosphere uncomfortable and the employees were all professional. Not a single eyeball was rolling in response to her. I only stopped in because my coworkers like the danishes here, but I could have gone elsewhere for a happier holiday vibe. read more

Their stuff tastes pretty good and the front staff are normally courteous and helpful. However, they're management is terrible and rude to customers and dishonest on top of it. They were sold out of pumpkin pies on Thanksgiving eve and I posted a comment on one of their Facebook posts to that effect to save others the aggravation of waiting in a long line that night just to find that out. What ensued was a back and forth where I was called a liar and they insisted they had them and cancelled plans with their children to make more that night for everyone. I went back to the store to pick one up and to speak to the owner/manager in person rather than act like children. Was told they weren't there, there was still no pumpkin pies, and anything they were making that night wasn't going to be sold that night, but was for the next day. For reference, they were still going to be open for several hours and were advertising in Facebook that they had pumpkin pies. I've been there many times as a repeat customer and it's safe to say I will never go back after that exchange. I never believed the reviews on here stating how rude the owners are but now I've seen that they are 100% true myself. These people just can't help themselves and should probably outsource any customer service issues to a third party because they're running this place into the ground. As an update now a couple days later, they deleted everything off Facebook so no one could see that they're big old liars who treat people terribly. Still no apology or willingness to talk to me despite me going there in person as they were responding to me and them having my phone number. These people are immature jerks and I would never give them my money or recommend them to anyone again. read more

I have never been so disappointed in a business owners response. I ordered a birthday cake and when I picked it up today the girl taped the whole boxed shut tight. When I opened it at home the cake was ruined. All of the flowers were crushed and one side of the piping. Also I noticed that the cake was never centered on the scalloped cardboard. When I called to speak to a manager or owner I was told to email him. I took all the pictures as proof. His response was that he would fix it if I drove it back to him. I explained that my dinner party was in a few hours and I couldn't go back. His attitude was "oh well." I'm sorry but this is not good business. I have gone to this bakery many times and their prices are not cheap. They will not see me back again for sure!!!! read more

This is a follow up even though it is a bit late. We called or stopped in after each issue that was listed in the original review. If the employees don't inform you when someone complains then it is not our problem. You hired them and they represent you. By the time you reached out, there was no reason for us to continue the dialogue. Love Lochel's! I can't wait to pick up all the wonderfully delicious baked goods I will be buying for Thanksgiving! Everything is so delicious including their cannolis. And that's a big deal since in the past I would travel to 30th street station for cannolis however Lochel's are pretty darn close! Their butter cookies are also a fantastic treat! Honestly though... the butter cake takes the blue ribbon! When I went to order the cake, the person who helped me, I believe Ali, was extremely rude and not very willing to work with me. It was a graduate school graduation cake and the graduation happened to fall on a birthday. We wanted her to write "Congratulations on your Master's Degree" and then add in "happy birthday" somewhere small in the corner or something. After dealing with Ali being very rude and unhappy with this idea, she agreed it it, and we left. I picked up the cake and it said, "Congratulations and happy birthday on your Master's Degree", which clearly makes no sense. I did not have them fix it as I did it have the time or energy to deal with them again. Cake tasted good, but will not be back. read more

Lochel's did an absolutely amazing job on my wedding cake. From the initial tasting to the actual product delivery on my wedding day, everything was flawless. The chocolate chip cake is so good, and the frosting tasted great. I loved the beautiful, simple design Lochel's created for us. They also made a groom's cake for my husband, and it could not have been better! It was a Florida Gators theme, and I have no idea how they perfectly made the Gator design onto a cake. So cool! Unbelieveable!!!! My wife and I moved to Hatboro over the summer and this place is DANGEROUS!!! All homemade pastries, cakes, breads, cupcakes, and cookies. For my wife's birthday party I got six different half dozen cupcakes and they were a huge success at the party. Some family took them home back to Ohio for their spouses! Definitely try the cupcakes and the cinnamon bread! They also have a restaurant across the street by the same name that takes that cinnamon bread and makes it into a mean French toast! I was a first time customer because the bakeries I normally go to were closed for the 4th of July weekend. I ordered a half sheet pound cake for my husband's retirement. I ordered a cake at this bakery based on the hype of their 'Sweetest bakery in America" contest and from the recommendation of a friend who loves Lochel's cakes. I had hoped things were better than my last experience in October where the red velvet cake was very dry. I thought I'd give them another chance, I am dismayed. When I entered the bakery, 2 employees were doing their work and neither looked up to greet me or say "be right there!" I was ok with it but thought it was sort of odd. A reluctant young woman turned around from the register area and asked me for my order. I asked her for some guidance or her recommendation on a cake for a special birthday. Layer or pound? Filling or frosting? Simple stuff. I am easy to please but this was for someone with a special request so I wanted to ask an expert. The flat affect and clear annoyance made me feel like I was bothering her. Perhaps I picked up on some disagreement between her and the other employee since abrupt words were shared between them and the need to help the next customer. Her answers to me were somewhat condescending. So I checked myself first and tried to ensure I was being reasonable, welcoming and kind. It was clear she wasn't really that interested in engaging with me and continued to look burdened by me. So I placed my order hoping to end the interaction. If the cake is great, maybe I could overlook this lack of customer interest. As she finished writing up my order (as did the other employee with the other customer), she slid over a pad of paper to me and asked me to vote for Lochel's bakery contest without a smile, very matter of fact. I almost fell over! Needless to say I just stayed quiet and did not vote. I write all this in the hope that they recognize that I am a potentially new and loyal customer who loves to shop locally. I only came to Lochel's on the recommendation because usually I go across the street to Nonno's. While friendliness is not their strong suit either, I would have thought that the 'sweetest' bakery at least had 'sweet' employees' who cared about their customers and would want to help them remain a customer for life. Makes the contest seem a bit of a fraud. Smile. Greet your customers. Act like you care. Try to be helpful and guess what ? You sell Goods to Tanners and it's not their fault but your last batch of scones I got three huge ones. I should have trusted my instinct and no that scones are not huge. I bought them anyway but they were disgusting too much baking soda or baking powder is what made them too big and they tasted like glue whoever baked them should have ditched them and started over. I went to pick up my moms birthday cake that i had order a couple of days ago because she said this was her FAVORITE bakery. I had ordered a wine themed cake. On the phone they had said they had suggested to make the cake a bigger size in order to fit the wine bottle, big flowers, and the "happy birthday mom". So we went with the bigger size recommendation. Since the cake would then be brought up to just under 70 dollars i was expecting something a little more unique. I then got there and they showed me this cake with two medium size flowers and a childish drawling of a wine glass. In addition the "happy birthday mom" message was not even on the cake it was written in the tiniest script on the gold foil cake board. Im so so disappointed and angry considering they told me the bigger cake was needed to get everything on the cake. Wont be buying from them again. And also to add to it the workers aren't the nicest and don't even give you eye contact when they speak and don't seem to care if the customers are satisfied with their order. I want to give a shout out to Kathleen Lochel from Lochel's Baker. I went to pick up the Chocolate Ganache Cake in Hatboro and the line was almost out the door. They do quite a business and while I was there, I picked up Christmas morning pastries and Christmas Dinner Petit fours. I'm going back in the morning for another party tomorrow evening. My guests "raved" about the Chocolate Ganache Cake with the chocolate custard inside. read more

This is for customer service too* My wife and I ordered our wedding cake from Lochel's Bakery. The experience of choosing the cake design and flavor was pleasant. The employee guiding us through the process was professional and helpful. We decided on the Raspberry Swirl as the bottom and top tier of our cake since it was our favorite flavor. The horrible experience began on our wedding day. When we cut our cake and it was being served, we realized that the entire cake was vanilla, and there was no Raspberry Swirl. My wife was extremely upset by this so our wedding venue called Lochel's to make a complaint. They "remedied" the situation by offering us a free Raspberry Swirl cake and a second complimentary cake on our 1st Wedding Anniversary. We went to pick up the first free cake and we were treated in the most disrespectful and unprofessional manner. I first noticed a particular employee being extremely impatient and rude to a customer in front of us with two children. Clearly, the children were excited, and they couldn't make up their mind on exactly what they wanted. It was clear by the face of the employee serving them that she was extremely annoyed, and she proceeded to make faces and mumble under breath, as she turned her back to ring them up. She asked the mother "are you sure this time" in a condescending and disrespectful tone. We were next in line to be served. As we approached the counter, she asked my wife in a smug manner, "you are the no charge cake, right?" She had a grin on her face as if she said this to further upset us and make a point. Considering the fact that this was Lochel's mistake in the first place, we were caught off guard with how we were being treated. As I began to say something in response to how we were being treated, my wife calmed me down from making a scene. My wife asked if this was the Raspberry swirl cake to confirm that it was correct, and the employee responded with something along the lines of, "yes, can you read, it's written right there," as she pointed to the box. After my wife made a comment about how disgusted we were by this experience on her Facebook, we received a phone call from the lady who helped us choose the cake. She had heard of the comments made on my wife's Facebook page, which is funny because we did not tag their page, and called to apologize. While she was very courteous and professional, as she was the first time, I explained what happened and told her about the employee. I was assured that action would be taken against her and that we should have not been treated that way. We will never do business with Lochel's again. The food quality is good, but I refuse to give business to a place with horrible customer service. They messed up our wedding cake and they proceeded to treat us this way. We will not be picking up our second free wedding cake from them for our 1st Wedding Anniversary. I will not even do business with them for free. There are many other competitors with equally good food that we will do business with in the future. Customer experience is everything in keeping a loyal client base. One employee ruined this for them. I will make sure to spread this experience on every review website possible and tell everyone I know about it. NEVER AGAIN! read more
