I have been taking my 4 year old here since he was 2 and I'm not sure where the people went to that have given bad reviews but I have never had a bad experience here. I don't know where to start! This place was recommended to me by a friend. We have a 3 year old son who is ALL OVER THE PLACE and scared of EVERYTHING! For that reason, he had NEVER got a hair cut. His hair was down to the middle of his back,, maybe longer, and I just didn't trust anyone to cut his hair short , knowing how much he moves around, but I booked the appointment and there we went. At first he was just overwhelmed and wanted to touch and play with everything. Then we tried getting him in one of the cool choices of cars ( which he went from one to another and another and the stylist was sooooo patient,, she just kept follow him lol) he screamed and cried for a second but then started playing with the PlayStation remote and watching Paw patrol. He moved SOOOOOO MUCH DURING THE WHOLE HAIR CUT! I was astounded at how the stylist could keep up and not zip a chunk out of his hair or something,, ! I am so satisfied and the hair cut was Soooooooooo or should I say IS so ADORABLE AND PERFECT! Only 17.99 + 2.00 for the first hair cut picture certificate and lock of hair. Took my little dude for a trim today. Scheduled a appointment with Jessica. She did a fantastic job on his hair last time, I made sure to get the business card with her name on it for my reference. She did another fantastic job. We did a light trim today, I think 1/4 or 1/2 inch was cut off. I didn't want to take away from his length, since the last time we took way more off. Turns out myself and hubby prefer the longer length. With the help of Jessica, and care maintenance the length will be back to the previous length. And we'll be coming in to keep his hair healthy. She was also very helpful I finding a product for his curly hair. His curls have been drying out and breaking off. Fingers crossed finally have a product that will quench those curls. Fantastic for toddlers. We took our 2.5 yr old son for a haircut and was very impressed. All of the seats are vehicles, all have TVs so the kids can watch while they are getting their hair cut, and there are NO mirrors to distract the kids. There are game consoles for kids to play as well. There are toys and a little play area to occupy the kids when they aren't getting their haircuts. Each kid gets popcorn and a juice box when they leave, and even a sucker if they want one.The price was right and we will be back. read more

Normally I would give this place more stars, but after our most recent visit, I'm going to try cutting my son's hair at home. The stylists usually try to make the kids comfortable, which is helpful for my 1 year old with a massive amount of hair. This last visit, the stylist didn't even address my son, she just walked up behind him and sprayed his head with the water bottle which scared him and he started wailing. I should've been more assertive and asked her to take a moment so I could calm him, but I mostly wanted the experience over as quickly as possible. This is the best place to go when looking for a place for children's haircuts! My boys love Miss Megan and always schedule with her. She is polite, friendly and very quick which helps when you have impatient little kids. They offer juice, popcorn, suckers and a coupon to a local treat shop(bens pretzels, valpo velvet, sweet shop)when your little one is complete with the hair cut. My boys love getting to pick their own vehicle and movie when getting their haircut. They have a play area with a slide and tons of toys with a train track and legos. Bad news: I went in one morning and was ignored for several minutes while the owner "talked" to her employee. I stood right in front of them and it was like I wasn't even there. There is a place and time for talking to employees. Do not ignore a paying customer. Good news: my son is very squirmy and does not like to sit still or sit at all. I love these stylists!!!! They are so patient and understanding when it comes to kiddos who hate, and I mean HATE, haircuts!!! Holding my toddler still for a hair cut could be an Olympic sport, and I usually leave covered in hair, sweat, and snot, but my son looks great, and the stylist was right there with me through the entire ordeal!! I typically wait as long as possible before taking my son for a hair cut because it's such an ordeal, but with the help of the fancy car stylist chairs (seatbelts!!), DVD players, suckers, and other distractions, we get through it!! The pricing is reasonable. A basic kid's cut is $17.99 I believe, and your mini me leaves with popcorn, a juice box, and a coupon for a treat at a local business (this time we picked Valpo Velvet). What a deal! Of course, I always make sure my tip reflects my appreciation for my son's stylist's superhero qualities. Did I mention that they also have a fantastic play area to keep the kids entertained if their happens to be a wait?? Oh, I should also mention that appointments are a must!! They offer a cute picture package for first time hair cuts, and they also have regular chairs for older kids. These stations offer various video game options to keep these older kiddos entertained as well!! I highly recommend this salon to all parents!! It's worth every penny!! read more

Went for my 2 year old son's first haircut and, while the environment is somewhat kid-friendly and the haircut itself was good enough, there was much to be desired. First of all, there's an entire area that is NOT kid friendly right by the (filthy) play area. With unprotected outlets, a dirty swiffer, and a sink. Also, no one cleaned the fire truck between kids, so my son sat where I had just watched the previous child chewed on various parts. And, the final nail in the coffin was the front desk girl. Blatantly rude. Like, I had to look around to see if anyone else could hear her because I had to laugh. We were 15 minutes early and she was rude about that. She would've let us leave without paying had we not asked her multiple times. No people skills. No friendly "I-work-at-a- place swarming with children-smile". It was very off putting. My final complaint is that they gave my not-quite-2 year old popcorn, which he promptly choked on. Bad judgement, there. We won't be returning. I wasn't impressed. read more

We have been coming to Locks of Fun since we moved to Valparaiso 2 years ago. Jen is FANTASTIC! My 3 kids love her and she always does a great job. She was very patient with my 1 year old and knew just how to distract him to get the cut right. The kids love sitting in the cars and playing at the train table. I would definitely recommend making an appointment so you don't have to wait b/c it is very busy. We have been nothing but pleased with every visit. read more

I have been taking my son to Locks of Fun for two years now. We love it. My son was very comfortable from the start. And Megan gave him the best haircut he has ever had. He has hard to cut hair. So we are now very Megan loyal. She even got him to let her use the clippers, which before that were not allowed near his head. Now he calls them "tickle bugs" and he is not afraid anymore. He even sits still! After the haircut, they give the kids popcorn and juice. Great experience for the kids. They took the scared out of childhood haircuts. And now since they remodeled your child doesn't have to outgrow Locks of Fun, they also do haircuts for adults. I highly recommend Locks of Fun. read more

Brought my almost 2 year old son in for his first professional cut he has had since he was 15 mo. We had 2 horrible experiences before we moved and I had been cutting his hair since then. I had heard many good things from other moms about this place. I let my son play for a few minutes to get used to the place first. I was actually surprised how clean the toy area was with as many kids being in there. The girl to cut his hair was sweet to my son. He got to pick out his movie and car to sit in. We had a basic little boy haircut done and I think she did a good job. My son did fuss near the end, however, our stylist remained calm. They did offer juice and popcorn or sucker at the end. Obviously, popcorn isn't recommended for kids this age due to it being a choking hazard, so we declined ( don't know why other reviewer gave it to her kid- just say no thanks!). We also were offered a voucher for a pretzel stick or scoop of ice cream at local shops. read more

I don't live in Valpo, but was in town visiting my in-laws lake house for a week and my kids desperately needed haircuts. I was so happy to stumble across this place, I had to write a review. My kids HATE getting their haircuts. I mean HATE THEM! We have been to every kid friendly salon in the Chicago area, as well as other places people have recommended as being good for kids and we usually end up with lots of tears and a less than complete cut, but we usually have to settle for good enough before things get to crazy. This place was great! My kids loved the train table, the play structure and the different vehicles were they could get their hair cut. The stylists were super patient and knew exactly what to do to distract the kids to get the job done. My 4.5 year old who has bawled for every haircut for the past 4 years actually sat still completely concentrating on Dora so I could chat with the stylist about how I wanted it cut. Good experience with my 1.5 year old too. They also offered my kids juice and popcorn when the cuts were over (as well as a gift certificate for an ice cream!) My kids DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE! I am not joking when I say that I think we are going to be driving to Valpo (from Chicago!) for haircuts from now on! read more

This was our first time here and it was fantastic! Super friendly and welcoming. They have thought of absolutely everything when it comes to little ones! They have the fun seats and they let our daughter pick which one she wanted to sit in. Each station has a TV and they let the kids pick the DVD to watch. They have suckers available, which we took them up on, and she was happy and content with her orange Dum Dum watching Doc. She didn't move, and Aimee was great with her! After she was done we were offered popcorn and several juice flavor options for her, which Aimee let me know were all 100% juice and clear, so no worries about stains. Genius! They had play areas and toys, and a great selection of hair accessories and products. Before we left, Aimee asked if we needed a wipe for her fingers getting sticky from the sucker. We did.
