Interstate dining is a real drag, as I've complained incessantly on this site about the drive between our current city (Cincinnati) and my hometown (Athens, GA). The drive between Cincinnati and Chicago hasn't been much better over those same years, but this Loco Fresh Mexican, which we hadn't been aware of until this latest trip, is a big plus. It's not the greatest Mexican restaurant in the world or anything, but it leans toward authenticity compared to the interchangeable combination-plate Mexican places you sometimes find at suburban and small-town interstate exits. Here, the tacos come with corn tortillas and cilantro and onion--not hard shells and lettuce and orange cheese--and you can get tortas. Between my wife and me, both chorizo tacos and a torta al pastor were solid eating, especially compared to the usual interstate-exit fast-food glop, and the food came out quickly. Decor is sort of fast-casual clubby, if that connotes anything--dimmer and more comfortable than a fast-food place. One reason I wanted to try Loco Fresh was the salsa bar. I love a good salsa bar. I love salsa and sampling different varieties is part of the fun of Mexican dining. However, I quickly learned that the salsa bar is for dine-in customers ONLY. If you order for carry out you are not allowed to take any salsa from the bar. Very disappointing. My food was just ok. It seemed a little pricy for the amount of food I got but would have been a better with dine-in since it would have included the salsa bar. The shop is family run and we were the only guests during our visit for a late lunch. The interior is all in black with a few pops of red. The dining room is immaculate. You order at the front counter, pay and take a seat. The menu is fairly simple - mostly al la carte tacos, a few burritos and sides. My husband and I each selected a couple tacos and a side of bean dip to share with chips. The service was friendly and food came out fairly quickly. The bean dip is mostly a creamy queso with a couple beans. It was delicious and the chips fresh. There is a salsa bar with radishes and cukes for the tacos. The Chicken Taco was my 5 star favorite with a big slice of perfectly ripe avocado and lots of seasoned chicken. The Barbacoa Taco was equally delicious with lots of seasoned brisket. The Asada Taco had lots of seasoned steak. Unfortunately, there is no alcohol but there is a selection of assorted sodas. They do a robust drive through business. There's plenty of parking. I love having authentic tacos and especially when it's in my neighborhood!!! This is a nice little spot right off the Whitestown exit by I-65. Also, it shares a space with a Marathon gas station. Although it may be a small space it packs a ton of flavorful tacos. We ordered a specialty taco the Quesabirria, which comes with a warm dipping sauce. We also got a chorizo taco with corn tortilla, a carnitas with a flour tortilla, an asada taco with a flour tortilla and a chorizo queso dip. Plus 2 Dos Equis amber beers. Everything we ordered was incredible!!!! There's even a little condiment station with various hot sauces and pickled onions and habeneros. I was a frequent customer and bought my friend a $50 gift card directly from the restaurant for her birthday. However, when she tried to use the gift card, they told her it didn't work. I had kept the receipt, so I went back to the restaurant and explained the situation. The worker looked into it and told me the gift card had no balance -- the $50 had never been added to it. Naturally, I asked them to correct the issue because I had proof of payment for a useless gift card. They refused to fix the gift card and would not refund my $50. Our group ordered two nachos entrees, which were plentiful. One person with small appetite ordered fajita taco, she really enjoyed it. Randomly noted the new authentic Mexican restaurant that moved into the Marathon gas station when we bought a ticket for a chance to hit one of the crazy lottery jackpots recently. While we weren't lucky with the lottery we were winning taking a chance to eat here. The prices are a little higher than i would expect but i don't think they have much competition here. The street tacos were all solidly delicious! While i enjoyed all i liked the pastor the most with the asada coming in second. Smart idea to have two taco shells so the tacos didn't fall apart. We used the drive thru and service was prompt considering we arrived right when they opened and ordered a bit of everything. The chips could be improved upon but not bad in any means. Ok, I work in Whitestown and have tried this place about 4 times. I can tell by the food it's trying to appeal a little more to Americans cause 100% Mexican food is not it. I tried the tacos azada and alpastor. The tacos are not filled with enough meat and are small so I don't think they're worth 4$ for one taco. The torta was small too and not filled with enough meat. The last thing I tried (I'm not going back), was the chicken and rice. I've never been to a Mexican place that served WHITE rice with chicken and give flour tortillas instead of corn ones. The chicken was bland and rice no flavor besides the cheese. This is NOT 100% authentic Mexican food. Today was my second time trying Loco Fresh Mexican. We are from the west cost close to Mexican border. The flavors are not authentic Mexican but the ingredients are fresh and you know you are getting a proper meal and not just processed fast food. Today I ordered 2 burritos, 3 tacos and two kids chicken tender meals. I asked twice for extra salsa. They got my order wrong the first time so I had to pay for and wait for them to make my second burrito. No problem. They serve salsa in 1oz cups. I like a full oz of salsa for each taco. Maybe 3-4 per burrito. After asking twice in the drive through for 8 salsas the staff ignored my request. I pulled around the front to grab a few extra salsa cups from the salsa bar inside. The lady who helped me in the drive through met me at the front to asked what I needed. I told her I wanted to grab a few more cups of salsa. She moved her body in front of the salsa bar and told me no. She said she had already given me 5 salsas and I wasn't allowed to have more. I told her I would just like to grab a couple more from the salsa bar and I could get it myself. She responded like I was trying to steal from the store. She said the salsa bar is only for dine in customers. This made absolutely no sense. Drive through prices are the same as dine in prices. I'm not sure what their salsa policy is. I would have happily paid extra for 3oz of salsa. Happily. There was not a single other customer in the restaurant at peak lunch hour and gallons of salsa sitting in the salsa bar. I left feeling pretty terrible. Not understanding why my $59 order did not grant me enough salsa for my family to enjoy our food with. I can't understand why a staff member would hoard salsa at a Mexican restaurant. I wasn't asking for a pint of salsa. After seeing the shock on my face she said she would give me salsa if I wanted. I was so put off by the whole situation I just left. Looking back I should have just taken her offer but I felt like she saw me as a dumb white girl who was trying to mess with her salsa bar. Not a welcoming presence. I don't see myself visiting this restaurant again after this experience. Which is a shame because with 2 extra ounces of salsa my Birria tacos I tried for the first time today would have been perfect. They do put tomato, queso fresco, and onion on all of their tacos, to cater to the American demographic, which I was not particularly fond of. The meat is very fresh and tender but lacks flavor. Went out for a quick liquor store run to prepare for my brother coming into town in a couple of days. I haven't seen him since the birth of my daughter (which was over 12 years ago) since he spends almost all of his time working at this charity that helps end homelessness. He started it way back in his 20s and he really is doing the lord's work, even though it takes up almost all of his time. He lives all the way out on the west coast so it's hard for him to make the trek out here, but he finally managed to get a week off. I'm utterly jazzed; I can't wait to hang out with him again.
