Loda Bier Garten is a need to know place in downtown. Whether it's for food, beer, a football game or all three, Bier Garten has it all. Located at the corner of Dauphin and Joachim streets, unfortunately unless you walk or ride a bike the parking option is the street. However they Loda Bier Garten is super bike friendly and even have basic repair tools on the front of the restaurant! Another good thing to know is that they love our four legged companions so feel free to bring them with you. The food has been up or down but the last five or six times it has been absolutely awesome. I've heard they hired a new chef, he's awesome. Try the new dipped fries in either Garlic Parmesan and Buffalo sauce! The pigs on a stick and pretzel bites are all appetizers you shouldn't miss. As far as entrees the burgers all rock and the buffalo bird isn't one to miss, if that's your thing. Also they have more beers on tap then I have been able to try or even count. They have seasonal picks as well, and are always willing to let you sample in order to make a choice! They have a large number of tvs and try to show as many different games as possible on both Saturday and Sunday. My wife and I always make it a point to visit this place during our trips to Mobile and the surrounding area. It is truly an eclectic bar with lots of beer selections. As for food, I'd considered it a few times in Mobile, the crowd tempted me, but the reviews always led me elsewhere. We used to go to LoDa Bier Garten pretty regularly, but it had been a while because we were trying new places. I forgot how much we love the place! We stuck around after an event the other night and had dinner. I ordered the Spanish Fort burger, which comes topped with avocado and bacon. Yumm! My hubs had a bratwurst and onion rings. The food and beer selection were so good that we went back within a week for another beer and a burger. That go around, I ordered a Monk burger, which was still delish, but there's nothing better than that Spanish Fort burger. I mean, bacon and avocado. Just let that sink in for a sec, then go get one and sink your teeth into it! The hubs ordered a Courthouse burger. It came topped with a blue cheese butter which was very spicy and unique. Beer? They've got over 100 beers on tap. My go-to now is a pink lemonade beer. It's crisp and refreshing, and LoDa Bier Garten and Old Shell Growler Station are the only two places in town that serve it. My hubs has found a new favorite beer, an IPA called Transmigration. They also have beer from local breweries like Haint Blue and Fairhope Brewing. They also have good quality liquor behind the bar if that's your thing. Saving the best for last, this place is completely pet friendly! The wait staff loves dogs and they'll bring them water bowls and give them a little attention. The service is great and the prices are super reasonable. Just go. Felt like I was at a college-type of dive bar, which isn't a bad thing. Was able to watch about 4 different games on the numerous tv's from where I sat at the bar. I ordered the Turkey burger: 1/3-pound grilled turkey burger topped with Ayingerz glazed mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and goat cheese. Served on a brioche bun. Burger was pretty good, got it with sautéed onions. The side I chose was the mac & cheese. That was ok, tasted a little dry, like it may have been made the day before or early that morning, the day I was there. But I'm a big mac & cheese fan so to me, it's hard to find a place that makes this terribly. As for drinks, they have a ton of beers to choose from, so I decided to sample some (see pic). Wow, what a terrible experience. First of all, we walked in and they told us to have a seat anywhere and there was no where to sit. So our party of 4 sat at a table meant for 2, and we had to ask a smaller party to switch with us. We then asked for a drink recommendation from the waitress and we took it. What happened to this place??? I've been coming here periodically for 10 years. The food is good usually but the service is low rank. Last time the waitress forgot to put our order in and it was an hour and a half before we were served (May ' 19). This time (July 19) they served schnitzel with no gravy (asked if we wanted bbq sauce) and when we reordered, it took 45 minutes for burgers that were over cooked. Rolled and deep fried in a tortilla, served with a poblano-avocado ranch) and LoDa's Loaded Nachos (House-fried tortilla chips topped with Uncle Dave's Pork Chili, beer cheese sauce, jalapeños, freshly diced pico de gallo and sour cream). Firstly, we sat outside for 33 minutes before our server came out at which time she didn't have my drink order correct, but no huge deal. Ordered an appetizer, almost half an hour went by and no appetizer... then our meals come out and the chicken and waffle sandwich is completely dry. We questioned where the sauce was and was told they "were out". Would've been nice to know as we wouldn't have ordered a completely dry sandwich and wouldve instead gotten something else. Asked where our appetizer was, she said she "wasn't sure and would check". Then she advises us she will have her manager come out, which is does nearly 40 minutes later only to tell us he won't be able to comp anything. Just a total disaster today. The atmosphere was fun, but it was such a cramped environment. The benches were stacked so close that you're basically touching backs with the people sitting behind you. I have been frequently visiting for a couple of months now and I have tried the majority of the menu. It is all excellent. The fish and chips is my personal favorite. The beer selection is top tier - domestic options are available but the imports is where it's at - the menu itself is a journey of exploration with something for everyone. You can find things here that you cannot elsewhere on the strip - or even in north Florida. Try the Mississippi fire ant, you won't regret it. As far as service goes, they have a core service group that does an excellent job and they work cooperatively to deliver top tier service, Sam in particular. The Beer is good (because they dont make it) but the food is inedible. We thought they couldnt possibly screw up a pretzel. I speculate they make a giant vat of dough and use it for all their needs while it sits there getting remixed and reused. Maybe they take the phrase "reduce, reuse,recycle" far too serious. I also think they bake the pretzels partly then finish the cooking off when you order -adding a smattering of salt rocks and a brush of tasteless vegetable oil. The "cheese" sauce is poorly named. I would call it more..."flavorless yellow flour paste".Flour and fat mixed together with salt. The cheese they so boldly claimed to be in the dip, clearly has the wisdom to avoid the company of such poor preparation, and has chosen to steer clear of association with this so called "cheese sauce". More power to you cheese! Fight the power! Drink the beer here but dont eat the food. It looks amazing -don't be fooled. Its like a setup for a photoshoot where they use glue for milk-It looks pretty ... probably wont kill you....? But I shant risk it. Kinda overpriced, I mean why charge $2 extra for a turkey or black bean patty sub? Beef is more expensive and you guys brag about how premium the meat is. Ordered the court house with turkey sub for patty and was disappointed, the burger was salty because of the bleu cheese and buffalo mix on the burger. On a suggestion to try this place by a fellow restauranteur, we stopped in before visiting the USS Alabama. LoDa is in the middle of downtown Mobile. A very pleasant quiet clean , almost Bizarro area that resembles the French Quarter/ Beale Street. On a Sunday afternoon when we went, the people in the vicinity reminds you of bohemians and people from Steel Magnolias. Shelby! Inside it was a very interesting looking place. Alot to look at. Cool decorations and bam!! Lots of beer choices! That is what gives this place 4 stars. Lotsa of beers that I haven't had before. Problem was I wasn't here to drink. So I limited myself to one local watermelon brew. Yummy. Our server was obviously suffering from the worlds worst hangover. She made very little eye contact because she was squinting so bad. But she listened and got our orders right, though we had to ask for silverware and plates. She was hurting I tell ya! No harm no foul. My date went for the buffalo chick sandwich and I chose the meatloaf sandwich. Both were yummy. No complaints on the food. We had the onion rings as an app. They were ok. Not the skinny types we prefer. There is a challenge burger here to eat that had us laughing. Something like 4 patties and a shit ton of ingredients that can land you on the wall for finishing it. If you don't its $35. There is also a burger called the Sugar Rush. Its made using donuts. IIIiimmmm not sure I will do that unless I am super tore up. Never say never right? the menu seems to have something for everyone. Mexican, burgers and German inspired foods like brats, schnitzels and pretzels. The snitzel was good by itself and amazing with the sauce. The Zombie Killer mead was dangerously delicious. Service was outstanding and staff was knowledgeable of the foods and drinks.
