The single bartender did an amazing job dealing with multiple large parties and the bar clientele that no one felt ignored. They have a large menu of great foods from sandwiches to salads, and lots of sides that would be great to pair with some beers. The brewery is on the campus of Case Western Reserve, so it's an easy one to walk to if you're exploring that area. There's also parking garages and street parking nearby. For us beer fans, we tried a bunch of flight sized beers, and also sprung for some limited cans to share. Prices were reasonable for the quality. It was a fun first brewery visit, one that probably isn't on everyone's most known list.

The dining area was cute and offered video games to play. There students stopping in for take out as we sat and ate our pizza. The pizza was good. The beer was ok. It was not apparent where they brew the beer and they were out of a couple of beer selections. The Jolly Scholar is located on CWRU's campus and they have a parking lot. Usually parking is at a minimum. Overall it was ok, but I would probably choose another brewpub in the area for next meal out.

Having lived in Germany, there is something special about the traditions around a hofbrauhaus. This…read moreis an international chain, and the one in Cleveland is well done. There were a few negatives on our visit, but the positives and the super evening we had here more than made up for them. It's right in downtown and so close to historic districts and Playhouse Square. The exterior looks like a place in Germany, both modern parts and historic house facade near the entrance. Inside is divided into distinct parts as well, with the main large hall having the stage, long group tables, small semi-private tables, and the bar area at the back easy to find with huge barrels. To the right of the entrance and restrooms are smaller rooms with low ceilings for events or quieter dinners. At the back is another small bar, plus outdoor seating areas off different sides. This is a German restaurant, and their menu leans into heavy meats, potatoes, pretzels, etc. The beer selection is traditional German styles as well: dunkels, helles, festbier, etc. They're also lower on the alcohol and heavier on the flavor so expect to get full here. Prices are reasonable for the large sizes, should you desire. Initially we had clearly frustrated staff serving our group and the shared bars, but once this was all adjusted, they all ended up being friendly and quick to serve. On our evening, there was a wedding party, which brought their own local band so the German umpah music was switched for rock standards and modern songs. This ended up being the highlight, as people were dancing on tables, and the close proximity of the stage made it feel like a private party for the few dozen of us left at the end of the evening. If you're a fan of German food, music, and beer, this is a fun substitute for flying to Europe.

Appetizers were OK. Fried pickles, sauerkraut, balls, and pretzels with beer cheese. Sauerkraut balls could've been fried a little more as they were a bit on the pale side. Meals were decent. My wife had chicken paprikash and spaetzle. She said it was OK. I had sauerbraten with spaetzleand red cabbage. The sauerbraten was good, but there was very little sauce with it, which was disappointing. All in all a decent experience and it could be a nice social event, but I wouldn't necessarily run back.

I was immediately greeted by a cheerful lady whom I told I was here to kill time waiting to pick my gf up from the airport so I needed some delicious food. She told me about the chicken wings and also recommended the burger as it was a popular item. I ordered the lemon pepper wings and a bacon cheese burger. The cook had to make the burger patties by hand which impressed me. When a burger is made and shaped by hand, you know it's made out of love. The wings and burger came out in small paper containers which didn't bother me. Easy pick up and throw away. The wings were crispy and had a delicious butter warm taste to it. The lemon pepper seasoning was just right. The burger was phenomenal. The aside of the burger and bun was just right. The taste combined with the lettuce tomato and bacon was out of this world. The company that was there which were locals was fun and enjoyable. I would definitely come back here for laughs and the food that was cooked here. Places like this are rare.

Jen was our server and she was smiley, at the end of what must have been a busy night with all the stuff going on in the District. Thanks Jen. Very disturbing and disgusting experience here…read more My husband and I were going to a play next door and were walking along the strip looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite about an hour beforehand. We saw this restaurant and sat on the completely empty patio. A server came outside, gave us menus, and we began looking over them and discussing what we wanted. Two women then walked up and asked us if the restaurant was open. We told them the server would come out, so we essentially brought them business as well. Within about five minutes, the same male server came outside three separate times asking if we were ready to order. He did not offer us drinks or water and seemed increasingly irritated that we were sitting there. The third time, my husband simply said, "We're good for now." The server then picked up a plastic sign that had been lying face down on the table, presumably blown over by the wind, and slammed it aggressively down in front of me, startling me, before storming away. We looked at the sign and saw that it said "Patrons Only." We were completely stunned by the way this was handled. If there was an issue with us being on the patio, it could have been communicated respectfully from the beginning. My husband went inside to ask for a manager. The same man told him that he was the manager and there was no one else. My husband asked for the owner, and after leaving for several minutes, he returned with the owner's phone number written on a Post-it note while insisting that he had done nothing wrong. My husband calmly asked him whether he thought his behavior toward us was appropriate. At that point, the "manager" came from behind the bar and began screaming at the top of his lungs directly in my husband's face, in front of all of the tables in the restaurant, loudly enough that I could hear it from outside along with two police officers who were nearby that rushed in after hearing it. He then got directly in my husband's face and chest-bumped him, escalating the situation physically. Another employee also became involved, yelling at my husband and appearing as though he was going to become physically aggressive as well. I opened the door because I was concerned about what was happening, and my husband and the two officers came outside. The manager never came back outside, and another employee took over the other table. The four of us were absolutely beside ourselves. We contacted the owner from outside the restaurant, but despite being told the owner would follow up, we have had to reach out ourselves and have still not received an adequate response regarding what happened. We are both business owners ourselves, and we cannot imagine treating customers this way. Regardless of whether there was a misunderstanding about the patio, there are professional and respectful ways to address customers. Screaming in someone's face, chest-bumping them, and escalating the situation physically is completely unacceptable. The incident was so loud and disruptive that people who were walking into the restaurant witnessed what was happening and left before they even walked in. This was not a quiet disagreement--it was a very public and extremely aggressive confrontation. We have never experienced anything like this in our entire lives of patronizing restaurants. We filed a police report regarding the incident. I would strongly encourage anyone considering this establishment to be aware of our experience.
