Hush puppies, fish and chicken combo with fries and cheese curds.
    Diana S.

Clean restaurant and friendly staff. Food tasted like it was cooked in clean oil. I ordered the chicken fish combo and it was tasty. Tried the Wisconsin cheese curds and they were yummy! Hubby ordered fish and shrimp platter with extra hushpuppies and coleslaw and said "For long John silvers it was good." Next time in in the area and have a craving for LJS I'd definitely stop here again.

The portions are ridiculously small now, and all batter. Very little fish anymore. LJS used to be my go-to place for fish. Not anymore.

I get a hankering for LJS maybe once a few months. I love the chicken planks with much vinegar to mask the greasy taste

One of my friends I met up for dinner worked with me at the Neutral Zone and the other I met there more than 37 years ago. The spot brought back great memories even though it had been totally renovated. The outside still looked the same;) When you walk in you see the bar and several high top tables. There's a dart board at the end of the bar. On the other side are more high top tables a few lower tables and three pool tables. There were lots of tv's as well as a jukebox. On my first visit I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was fresh with light crispy breading. I wasn't a fan of the fries but loved the finely chopped coleslaw. On my second visit I had the reuben sandwhich which was tasty! I didn't want fries and even though a house salad was not on the menu I was served a lovely salad with a boiled egg as a fry substitute. Now that's service deserving of recognition! On both visits my servers were friendly and attentive. On my second visit I was offered a beer sample which I liked and ordered. When I'm in town visiting my family I will definitely be back to try more menu items.

From the moment you step inside, the aroma hits first: a deep, hickory-laced perfume that signals…read morehours of slow devotion rather than shortcuts. This is barbecue that announces itself honestly. No gimmicks, no pretension--just meat treated with respect. We started off with the Texas Sausage Sampler which includes 3 Sausages. Jalapeno Cheddar, Hickory Smoke and Original Old Fashioned. Served with Carolina Gold Sauce, Mustard and Horseradish. The sauce is outstanding. Smoking J's Rib House in Ashland, Kentucky, is the kind of place that reminds you why barbecue isn't just food--it's culture, patience, and pride rendered in smoke and fire. The ribs are the undisputed star. Thick-cut, generously portioned, and lacquered with a bark that balances sweetness, smoke, and spice, they arrive with that elusive perfection every pitmaster chases. The meat pulls cleanly from the bone without collapsing into mush, proof of disciplined temperature control and timing. Each bite delivers layers: smoke up front, pork richness at the core, and a restrained tang from the sauce that enhances rather than smothers. Brisket lovers will find plenty to admire. The slices boast a pronounced smoke ring and a pepper-forward crust, with fat rendered to a buttery softness that melts on the tongue. It's assertive, confident barbecue--unapologetically Southern, yet precise enough to impress even seasoned purists. The sides refuse to play second fiddle. Mac and cheese was amazing, creamy with a baked top that adds texture, while the baked beans carry a subtle smokiness that echoes the pit rather than competing with it. Coleslaw provides a crisp, cooling contrast, cutting through the richness exactly as it should. What truly elevates Smoking J's, though, is its sense of place. This isn't barbecue chasing trends or Instagram aesthetics. It's barbecue rooted in community--food that feels earned, familiar, and deeply satisfying. The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, the kind where regulars are greeted like family and newcomers are quickly converted. Smoking J's Rib House doesn't just serve great barbecue--it reinforces why Ashland deserves a seat at the table in Kentucky's smokehouse conversation. It's a destination for locals, a worthy stop for travelers, and a reminder that when barbecue is done right, it doesn't need to shout. The smoke speaks for itself.

I ordered a burger with meat candy (bacon) which wasn't added to the burger. Our waiter promptly brought it out on a plate and it was black and tasted burnt. The burger had a very odd flavor that was not good at all. I'm typically not too picky but I left half of it on the plate. We first tried this place in June 2025 and fell in love with the food. However, it seems to have gone downhill every time we've returned. The service has always been less than desirable, but the food has made up for it until last night. Unfortunately money is too hard to come by these days, and I don't like giving it to places that don't seem to care enough about their product or customer service and satisfaction. This place ain't cheap either! We won't be back. Hopefully they'll figure out a way to turn it around sooner than later.

Visited this location last night for an impromptu date night with my wife…read more Despite the holiday weekend, the business was busy and we had about a fifteen minute wait to be seated (they have both inside and outside waiting seating), we chose a bench outside in the cool evening air. Once our table was ready, we were notified by the hostess and seated at a high top near the bar (bar seating it first come first serve at the bar). They also have low top tables for parties of 4 to 6. Despite being close to the bar, we were still able to talk easily and noise level was acceptable. Our server was pleasant and knowledgeable of the menu and made some helpful suggestions that we used. We ordered a pickle fries appetizer with ranch dipping sauce with our drinks. These came out quickly and were still hot from the fryer but they were good and the homemade ranch was really good (our server advised they make all their sauces and dips in house). For our mains, we both ordered the original burger - a half pound burger on a bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles topped with ketchup, mustard and mayo. We also opted to pay an extra fifty cents to add cheese (American for me and provolone for her). We also opted to pay an extra fee to add sweet potato fries and onion rings to our meals as opposed to fresh cut chips. The burgers were a little slow getting out and drinks began to run dry. Once our burgers came out, they looked great but mine was a little salty and I could taste the salt over the other toppings in my first bite. After that the burger leveled out and we enjoyed our meal. My wife did not like the Maple Siracha dipping sauce that came with her sweet potato fries and after trying it, I was not impressed either. All in all, a good meal at a fair price. Good place for a casual date.

Walking into the pub and heading to the back room where the bar is, it was hard not to reminisce of my time spent in Ireland. The restaurant has a vintage Irish pub decor and a friendly atmosphere. The perfect place to go spend time with family and friends. We sat at the bar and our bartender (Sandy) was absolutely fantastic! She was accommodating, humorous, and just made you feel like you were apart of her family. She made a really great Moscow Mule and a tasty version of a Long Island iced tea I've never had before. I hope to go again soon to try some more food varieties, but on this stop, I had the shepherds pie and was able to try some of the hummus and pita bread. Both I highly recommend and worth giving it a go. I look forward to my next visit! Stop on by and give Port city pub some love.

The restaurant seemed clean and it was big enough to be comfortable and not too big so it was sort of a cozy dining experience.
