Fish 2 Fish Combo
Richard F.

Since it's been a while since we've eaten at LJS I decided to give it a try for lunch. They had a special on their Fish Box. 2 pieces of fish, fries and Hush Puppy for $6. The fish was good, but the fries must have been sitting out as they were cold and hard. Couldn't even eat them. So it may be a while before I go back.

Here I sit in the back parking lot of a disheveled Long John Silver's waiting for the manager to bring me my change. I made the mistake of handing the girl a twenty and a one dollar bill for an order totaling $10.60. I got 40 cents back. When I asked for the rest of my change a manager got involved and I was asked park in the back while they counted the drawer. Ultimately, while my food cooled, a manager arrived at my car and acknowledged the drawer was over ten dollars and then proceeded to hand me $9.60 as the girl had already given me 40 cents. Um, no. My change is $10.40 and you gave me 40 so you owe me $10. Eventually we got it right but it should not have been that hard. Now let's get to the food. Cold is never good and certainly not when deep fried. I asked the manager for cocktail sauce and they were out and I was treated with a story about grocery store shortages. I worked for LJS while in college and know sauce shortage means poor ordering on the part of management and the lack of a contingency plan (make a batch with some catsup and horseradish) confirms that. That and the utter disrepair of the building makes the one star and a pro recommendation of avoid at all costs.

2 (in 2 for $6) means 2 fish, 5 shrimp in one box.

They had a bargain sale: fish fry for $1.99. The hush puppies were fantastic. I will go here again.

St Aloysius is located in the downtown portion of small Shephedsville Kentucky tucked away In a residential neighborhood. Like most Catholic fish Fry's the speciality is fish sandwiches. But they will serve other things such as oysters, shrimp, onion rings and desserts. This fish fry the last few years has been drive thru only. Me and my family enjoy checking out several Catholic Church fish fry's during Lenten season and when some of our close family friends who belong to st aloysius told us to try this we grabbed an order and went to there house and had family dinner together. Pricing is on par with other fish frys. $6 a fish sandwich. They actually had a pretty large dessert menu that included a home made chocolate cake from the priest. The priest took our order so I actually ordered a slice. Our fish sandwich was pretty good. Not the best local fish fry sandwich but still good. I'd still rather have this than a fast food chain any day. Good sized and nice flavor. The shrimp was solid. A little over cooked on this visit. My wife said the onion rings and oysters was pretty good and we got the kids a cheese pizza slice and they said it was alright. Kinda on par with a little Cesar's if they had to make a comparison. For desserts we got a normal chocolate cake, an awesome chocolate cake (this is what the priest named his homemade one), a brownie and a Chocolate mint brownie. The brownies were huge and tasty. Was kinda shocked to see a mint chocolate brownie at a smaller church fish fry but it was good. Both chocolate cakes were pretty good. I tried both and I will say fathers was better. He did a good job on his hand made cake. Overall nice fish fry. I do have some in person ones locally I prefer that have better fish and fun activities. But, this one is nice too and the workers were all great. We would come back for sure.

So for my husband's birthday, we decided to celebrate there with all of our family, and it was such a delightful dinner. We all got something different. I opted for the fish & chips. The fish was huge and perfectly crispy. The chips came out steaming hot and perfectly fried. My sister-in-law got the cottage pie, which really is a showstopper! The bread bowl really makes it. Even my kids were happy (not an easy feat), having ordered the mac-n-cheese and grilled cheese, also stealing chips from our plates. For dessert, we all split the bread pudding -- a hug of a dessert -- and the chocolate Guinness cake. Don't let the "flourless" part of the chocolate cake's description fool you -- this cake is rich and creamy. Our waitress was even able to find a candle, so we could sing to my husband and have him blow it out. The service as always was quick and friendly. The Irish Rover really is a treasure and more should definitely come out for its food.

Waitstaff are welcoming and efficient. Noise level is mild to moderate. Appears to be an establishment with a loyal following of regulars. I tried the lamb stuffed cabbage rolls and they were okay. I'm not keen on this type of food since I'm more of a spicy sort, so will likely not revisit. Great place for anyone with a craving for English pub bar food cuisine and great atmosphere that is cozy and welcoming.

The food was good, the cooks were kind. However, the older man at the cash register (perhaps the…read moreowner?) overcharged me for everything, and when I pointed it out to him (at first I thought it must be an accident), he threw dollar bills at me while hollering that he knows how to run a restaurant. Well, maybe that's true because most restaurants fail and this one has been around for a while, but maybe it's because they're overcharging their customers instead of increasing their prices on the menu, and hoping the customers don't notice. I've never been so nickeled and dimed at a restaurant! I was so insulted that I handed his few dollar bills back to him and said I just wanted him to be transparent about what he was going to charge me, before he charged me! I asked for a Tilapia sandwich (menu price $8.95) and a Haddock sandwich combo (menu price $13.95 for the sandwich + cole slaw + fries). I asked if the sandwich came with anything on it, and he said no, but he could add pickle slices. He didn't tell me about an upcharge. I asked if I could substitute the fries in the combo for fried mushrooms. He said yes, but there would be a slight difference in price. I said that would be fine because the side items showed it was only a $0.45 difference in price (on the menu, french fries are $3.50 and fried mushrooms are $3.95). I asked if I could pay with credit card, and he said yes, but didn't mention a card fee. What I thought I would be charged: $8.95 + $13.95 + $0.45 = $23.35 + 6% tax = $24.71 total. Instead I was charged $30. When I asked him about it he said there was a $1 credit card fee that he had neglected to tell me about prior, and that instead of charging me for the difference between the price of the fries and mushrooms, he rang each item up separately instead of ringing it up as a combo (first of all, why would he do that??? and second of all, why wouldn't he tell me he was going to do that???). Then he told me he also charged me for the 5 skinny quarter-sized slices of bright green pickles you get from the jar. When I said, "you charged me for pickles?" He said, "of course I charged you for pickles!" So he charged me $8.95 tilapia sandwich + $9.95 haddock sandwich + $2.50 cole slaw + $3.95 mushrooms + $2.00 pickles (TWO DOLLARS FOR 5 SKINNY QUARTER SIZED PICKLE SLICES) + 6% tax + $1 credit card fee = $29.99 (AND OF COURSE HE DIDN'T GIVE ME THE PENNY NOR ASK IF I WANTED TO KEEP THE PENNY; HE KEPT THE PENNY FOR HIMSELF AND CHARGED ME THIRTY WHOLE DOLLARS FOR A $24.71 MEAL).Which isn't a big difference, but in this economy, adds up, and the LEAST they can do is be TRANSPARENT ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE GONNA CHARGE YOU. AND THEN WHEN YOU NOTICE THE DISCREPANCY AND KINDLY & CALMLY ASK IF THEY MADE A MISTAKE, THEY SHOULDN'T GET DEFENSIVE, RAISE THEIR VOICE AT YOU, AND THROW DOLLARS AT YOU IN FRONT OF A LINE OF CUSTOMERS. This was my first time here and I was excited to go back and try everything else. Instead, I'm never going back and I'm telling everyone I know.
