    Wow. I recently visited the St. Augustine fish fry for the first time. I had heard it was popular, but when I pulled up on around 11:40, the parking lot was full, lots of people were coming and going, and there were cars parked on the sidewalk of Broadway. We faxed our orders in the day before, so we made our way to the back of the space. (Otherwise, you'd go to the credit table or the cash table to place your order and pay before getting in the long line to get food.) At that table, I was shocked by the people in front of us picking up orders for 16 or 20 people!! Wow! (I had just ordered for three.) It took a bit, but I just watched the entire production. Again, wow. So many people. So many volunteers. All just doing the thing!! There was an issue with my faxed order, so I recommend you call after faxing (if you go that route) to confirm receipt. Regardless, they took care of us and were extremely kind. I left a little exhausted with my carryout, but very impressed at the same time. On to the food!!! I ordered a dinner ($10), which includes one fish option, your choice of bread, and two sides. I opted for the fried boneless white fish, corn bread, macaroni and cheese, and mixed greens. I also added a side of potatoes and onions and also a dessert (caramel cake). After I dug in, I realized why this fish fry is so popular: the food is great! And you get lots of it! The fish was FANTASTIC, and the corn bread was perfect--a little crisp, if you will. The sides were all delicious; I really can't pick a favorite. The cake was was good, too! If you're going to this fish fry, be prepared for a true experience, but also be prepared for some downright delicious food!!

    I look forward to the St. Augustine Fish Fry every year. It's always the first fish fry I go to during Lent, & I usually can't help but go more than once. They've got things down to a smooth system, if people will pay attention when they walk in. To the left is a card & cash check out, to the right is the cash only. In between is a round table with order forms that you must fill out first before going to whichever checkout you need. After your ticket has been stamped PAID you go to the order fulfillment line & wait for the food team to put your meal together. There is a line for people with three or more orders & a line for single orders. When you get to the front you give your order paper to whoever is open next & they box it in a to-go box. Condiments are on the table if you are eating in or in small containers to take if you are leaving. I always order the boneless white fish. The batter has something in it that no other fry has that I've been to. I think it's nutmeg, but don't quote me on that. The sides are all amazing. My two personal faves are the green beans & the fried potatoes & onions. The only thing I'm not a fan of at St. Aug is the sweet tea. Every year I forget that it's not church lady sweet tea & when I take the first sip & realize that it's gallon sweet tea with artificial lemon I kick myself for forgetting. So, if you're not into that, order soda. LOL The people making & serving the food are all parishioners, which I love. They have a small parking lot, which can fill up fast, so I recommend going early or late, not right in the middle. I will definitely be going back again before the end of Lent this year! I hope you make it there, too!

    In a word, Festive! As far as Lent goes (or Catholicism for that matter), I'm a true nonbeliever. And I'm not much for battered whitefish. So you might think I'm a bad target for this sort of thing. But Louisville without fish frys in March is about as unimaginable as Louisville without juleps in May. And among the handful I've tried, this one has given me the best food experience. It might have to do with the fact that the church is a rare example of an African-American parish. (Rule of thumb for evangelicals: diversity in conversions = better eating. Proselytize wisely.) The battered fish is good, as are many of the sides. Lots of choices there -- baked beans, potatoes and onions (dug this one), green beans (meh), grits, mac 'n cheese, potato salad, boiled egg. But I always make sure to get the mixed greens. By all means, load up on the hot sauce. It goes great on everything, especially those greens. My co-workers swear by the caramel cake. I like the bread pudding. The cobbler is a fun choice too, but I found it to be heavy. Know that it's a zoo. The crowds are half the fun, of course, but lines can get really long. And it's run by volunteers, so nobody's going to get fired for moving slowly. We avoid the wait by faxing in our orders ahead of time. Also, be prepared to want to take a nap afterward. Or go for a long run. Either way, that billion calorie lump in your gut will be a long-term reminder of what you just did. (Bonus: if the meal kills you, St. Peter will still approve.)

Well, maybe that's true because most restaurants fail and this one has been around for a while, but maybe it's because they're overcharging their customers instead of increasing their prices on the menu, and hoping the customers don't notice. I've never been so nickeled and dimed at a restaurant! I was so insulted that I handed his few dollar bills back to him and said I just wanted him to be transparent about what he was going to charge me, before he charged me! I asked for a Tilapia sandwich (menu price $8.95) and a Haddock sandwich combo (menu price $13.95 for the sandwich + cole slaw + fries). I asked if the sandwich came with anything on it, and he said no, but he could add pickle slices. He didn't tell me about an upcharge. I asked if I could substitute the fries in the combo for fried mushrooms. He said yes, but there would be a slight difference in price. I said that would be fine because the side items showed it was only a $0.45 difference in price (on the menu, french fries are $3.50 and fried mushrooms are $3.95). I asked if I could pay with credit card, and he said yes, but didn't mention a card fee. What I thought I would be charged: $8.95 + $13.95 + $0.45 = $23.35 + 6% tax = $24.71 total. Instead I was charged $30. When I asked him about it he said there was a $1 credit card fee that he had neglected to tell me about prior, and that instead of charging me for the difference between the price of the fries and mushrooms, he rang each item up separately instead of ringing it up as a combo (first of all, why would he do that??? and second of all, why wouldn't he tell me he was going to do that???). Then he told me he also charged me for the 5 skinny quarter-sized slices of bright green pickles you get from the jar. When I said, "you charged me for pickles?" He said, "of course I charged you for pickles!" So he charged me $8.95 tilapia sandwich + $9.95 haddock sandwich + $2.50 cole slaw + $3.95 mushrooms + $2.00 pickles (TWO DOLLARS FOR 5 SKINNY QUARTER SIZED PICKLE SLICES) + 6% tax + $1 credit card fee = $29.99 (AND OF COURSE HE DIDN'T GIVE ME THE PENNY NOR ASK IF I WANTED TO KEEP THE PENNY; HE KEPT THE PENNY FOR HIMSELF AND CHARGED ME THIRTY WHOLE DOLLARS FOR A $24.71 MEAL).Which isn't a big difference, but in this economy, adds up, and the LEAST they can do is be TRANSPARENT ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE GONNA CHARGE YOU. AND THEN WHEN YOU NOTICE THE DISCREPANCY AND KINDLY & CALMLY ASK IF THEY MADE A MISTAKE, THEY SHOULDN'T GET DEFENSIVE, RAISE THEIR VOICE AT YOU, AND THROW DOLLARS AT YOU IN FRONT OF A LINE OF CUSTOMERS. This was my first time here and I was excited to go back and try everything else. Instead, I'm never going back and I'm telling everyone I know.

The Irish Rover really is a treasure and more should definitely come out for its food.

I'd still rather have this than a fast food chain any day. Good sized and nice flavor. The shrimp was solid. A little over cooked on this visit. My wife said the onion rings and oysters was pretty good and we got the kids a cheese pizza slice and they said it was alright. Kinda on par with a little Cesar's if they had to make a comparison. For desserts we got a normal chocolate cake, an awesome chocolate cake (this is what the priest named his homemade one), a brownie and a Chocolate mint brownie. The brownies were huge and tasty. Was kinda shocked to see a mint chocolate brownie at a smaller church fish fry but it was good. Both chocolate cakes were pretty good. I tried both and I will say fathers was better. I then ordered a duck taco, brisket taco, and a side of Grippo Fries with smoked mayo. I'd never tried duck but that taco was smack-a-lackin'. The brisket taco was also good, and the fries were fantastic - sweet and spicy, fresh cut, and crispy. Wife ordered a pork belly slider and truffle fries. She enjoyed the slider but didn't care for the fries - just not her thing. The portions here are large. A side of fries will feed three people. We took a hefty portion of them home, as well as some of the mushrooms. We could've sat there at the bar and spent 3 hours socializing and enjoying a smattering of cocktails - love the setting. I really loved the pork belly slider and the duck tacos. Mac and cheese balls always slap. Then there are the famous duck fat fries. The portion is substantial, I was thrilled with that. Flavor wise they did not change my life like I was hoping they would. Still ate them all. The locale is super unassuming from the street, but inside it is really cool, divey, and broody. The staff was super sweet and helped me get in and out efficiently so I could make it to the game. Would absolutely recommend, would absolutely come back, and would absolutely bring friends here.
