Super super good! I read a few reviews of this place and decided to stop by after wandering around Berkeley for a bit. I missed lunch (they're closed from 4-5 and then dinner begins) but arrived right around 6 to get a decent seat before all the families with children filled in. Service was super quick - the tea and plate were already on the table, and water arrived before I could put my backpack down to sit. The menu is straightforward and divided into seafood and veggie dishes. I went with the broccoli vegi-chicken and brown rice, which was a much bigger portion than I was expecting (Golden Lotus has set the bar a little low, no?) and a decent bowl of rice. I had been to Cinnaholic a few hours before (it was my day off!) so I wasn't incredibly hungry, but I made it through only half the plate before realizing I was unbelievably full. One plate and an appetizer can easily be enough for 2 people. My order was maybe $11-12, after tax. Good deal. At the end, I got two orange slices, which I slowly ate, despite being full because I really don't like seeing food go to waste. First off, the restaurant is not very clean. I received a glass with lipstick marks on it. I know this happens sometimes, fine. But when I asked for a new glass and gave the reason, they brought a new one while leaving the lipstick-stained one there for me to look at the entire lunch. The table and menus are also sticky, and the plates didn't look so clean, either. I'm a little lax about cleanliness and service when there is good food, but alas, we were all disappointed there as well. The tofu was watery, not very warm, and not cut very evenly. The veggies needed spice or salt and way less oil. The best dish was with curry and mung noodles--it was well-spiced and salted and the eggs tasted fresh. People were right: this is a ridiculously good lunch deal. $4.95 for soup, a spring roll and a choice of one entree out of 33 options! LLV is all about the quantity, not the quality... There wasn't much flavor, so my friends and I kept dumping soy sauce and chili paste all over our dishes. The rice was awful because it was brown and not white. I'm not being racist, but asians just don't do brown rice. I got pretty excited about the kung pao chicken, because it's one of the things I miss since becoming vegetarian. What came out in no way resembled kung pao chicken as I remember it. It was tiny cubes of tofu! Plus, it's on the side of campus that I never go, so this might not be a return trip for me. read more

Ever ordered a dish with shrimp in a Chinese restaurant and was disappointed only to see maybe two or three shrimps in the dish? That's not the case here. I ordered the spicy eggplant with prawns and was happy to see the dish was Full of prawns! And they weren't just the little tiny shrunken shrimp but real prawns and I counted at least ten!! Yeah, you bet this earned an extra star from me! Not bad overall. Service was quick and friendly enough. I got hot tea and a glass of water right off the bat and my order came in like ten minutes. They pretty much left me alone while I ate but luckily, I had a teapot full of hot tea so I didn't require much. read more

I decided to try this place with the intention of comparing it to Nature Vegetarian, one of my favorite vegetarian Chinese restaurants. But after eating there I realize that they can't be compared, because the goal is totally different. Whereas Nature serves decadent, complex and often deep fried fare, Long Life is decidedly simple. The mock meats used are totally different and are in smaller ratio to vegetables, which star in most of the dishes. The food tends to be more basic stir fry with very fresh vegetables and brown rice. Not a 100% health restaurant, but definitely on the healthier and lighter side. This is the place if you're looking for something fast, light, and inexpensive. Lunch specials are around $7, a bargain in that neighborhood! read more

Superb, unpretentious Chinese food at a very reasonable price, which is a rarity these days. The spicy eggplant and fried tofu entree is especially recommended. The hot-and-sour soup is the best I've had. This restaurant is very vegetarian-friendly, as the name implies. As far as I know, they have no meat in the kitchen at all. It is also family- and kid-friendly, with kind and attentive service. It's always nice to patronize a family restaurant with reliable service that takes pride in (a) the quality of its ingredients (b) the preparation of the food and (c) providing a welcome environment for kids and large groups. Long Life Vegi House hits a home run when it comes to all three. It's a pleasure to eat here, and I always look forward to it during my visits to Berkeley. This place is cheap and good, but I feel a little sick afterwards. Vegetarian steamed dumplings were good, but the Taiwan Restaurant down the street serves better dumplings. The spicy tofu with garlic sauce was tasty, but the tofu came out a little mushy and the sauce was overpowering and too mild. The soup of the day was AMAZING! It was some bean curd soup with weird-looking vegetables. The fortune cookie was my favorite. Oh and lunch specials only cost $5.00, excluding tip. read more

I got the longlife tofu with broccoli instead (it originally comes with bell peppers and onions) and I also go chow mein noodles instead of rice. I didn't really care for the chow mein noodles. I'd get the dish again but with rice!! The dish was flavorful though and the portions are huge! My uncle who eats meat told me about this place & I'm so glad he did! My partner and I are both vegetarian and we LOVE Long Life Vegi. The staff are friendly and welcoming and there are lots of choices. I don't love veggie meat but my partner does and he orders it often, and there are plenty of dishes that don't have veggie meat in them that I enjoy. The lunch specials are our favorite - tasty, reasonably priced, and fast! We miss sitting at the tables and eating the orange chicken (technically veggie meat but mostly it's crispy and tastes like sauce... though this unfortunately means it doesn't travel very well) but continue to order takeout from them and eat it for several meals at home. read more

This is literally the best Chinese food place I've ever been to. I've been coming here for years and it's about time I actually write a review about this place. This is definitely the definition of a family run business. Every time I come, I'm remembered and I feel welcome. My order has been perfect every single time, and the food is always amazing. Some of the dishes I recommend are the vegetable fried rice with egg (add the spicy sauce and soy sauce), seafood dumplings, orange or sesame chicken, spring rolls, onion pancakes, and salt/pepper shrimp. I've been going here for the last 22 years. Back then, there weren't too many vegetarian places. Now there are vegetarian restaurants eveywhere, but this place is STILL my favorite. The staff is great, and the food never disappoints. The lunch special comes with an egg roll, rice and soup with entree and is literally cheaper WITH a 20% tip, than a combo from McDonald's... Also a great place to grab dinner. Done less dining in since the pandemic, but always have to grab a take-out order anytime I'm close by. read more

It's my second time going to this place and I must say I love it! The price is extremely cheap and don't think because it's cheap the place doesn't offer good food, cause it does! For the two times I ate there, we got started off w/ this veggie and tofu soup that is a bit spicy. Although, i'm not much of a spice girl, I like the soup especially when you have a runny nose it helps. Haha. Anyway, the last time I went, I got the pot sticker (veggie stuffing) 6pieces for $4 something. The pot stickers were quite big, delicious, and very filling! I live in Martinez and I make the trip to Berkeley JUST to eat here. Everything on the menu is to die for and so delicious. Great vegetarian food on a budget! It's insane how cheap it is. Especially considering that their normal portion lasted me for lunch and I brought back half for dinner. Tofu with spicy garlic sauce on brown rice + egg roll + soup of the day + hot tea & cold water + fortune cookie = $5. Insane, right? And the food is extremely tasty! Kudos for making good food at low prices, what more could we ask for! -0.5 star because service, although nice, is not extremely friendly - a bit "cold" at times, I would say, but sometimes lacking in terms of basic customer care (sloppy pouring of water, splattering all over the table, sloppy cleaning of the aforementioned table, my to-go bag got wet and greasy in the process...). Still, it was friendly enough, and quick, and in a way (especially considering the prices) well-suited for the place, if that makes sense. -0.5 star because my green tea ice cream wasn't as great as I had hoped (I was so sad! Still ate most of it though). I would have taken more than half a star if the portion hadn't been so HUGE! Two scoops at least, maybe more, for $2. That's pretty good for a restaurant, I'd say. They also have lychee ice cream - I know what I'm getting next time... ;) Overall - highly recommended! Especially for lunch, when it's cheapest. When i was a starving student at Cal, Long Life was da bomb. It's 5 minute walk from campus and it was one of very few vegetarian restaurants in town. So cheap, especially for lunch, and the menu was extensive. I ate there so often I had the menu memorized. But the years went by. The food was still good, but the place, resting on its laurels, got dirtier and dirtier. Nonetheless,they still had their 25 year old "best of bay area" certificates proudly displayed. I took my third generation vegie kids there, and they dubbed it the "Greasy marlin" after the gigantic plastic fish hanging on the wall. By then, I was no longer a starving car-less student. I began going to Oakland's Great Wall, which had an identical menu and wasn't embarrassing to take company to. But, glory be! Long Life has moved, and the new facility is clean! The marlin no longer drips yellow grease, and hangs proudly and (cleanly!) on the wall. This makes me so happy. read more

Great food with great prices. At first I was super sceptical since it's a vegi chinese place and I thought how good could a vegi chinese eatery be? But when I eventually checked it out and ate there, I was pretty impressed. I shared a pretty large bowl of Soup with 2 friends and I think the Hot & Sour Soup was like $5 or $6 which is pretty cheap for the amount and quality The vegi-beef and the noodles etc. taste really similar to like beef-beef and real meaty chinese dishes and it's all at reasonable prices. The staff is very active and when it is crowded it can take a while but at least the soup comes relatively fast, but overall the service is very good and satisfying. They also serve tea and fruits (oranges) and fortune cookies after the meal and again the total price at the end comes out rather cheap (at least that's what I remember/feel like). Ok, I'm giving this place 5-stars because I haven't had faux meat that tasted so good! I came with a friend and his family and I was weary about eating the "chicken"; however, I was surprised at how good it all tasted!!! The service was fast and efficient, and I was surprised to see how many options there are for meat-free eating! I'm not saying I'm going vegetarian, but if I were, I'm sure I'd be here for every meal. It's situated in a nice area, but we found parking to be a bit difficult. Sometimes vegetables end up being more of a garnish, even at "Vegetarian" restaurants. Go figure... I can't wait to come back here to try other items on the menu. At $20 (minus tip) for our meal, it's definitely money well spent. The food is really good without leaving you bloated or in an MSG induced coma as can happen after eating Chinese food. Long Life Vegi House has me and my lady addicted since the first taste. It's so tasty it has us calling in to go orders from Oakland, and us rolling fast to pick up our warm heaven in a bag. This is the best comfort Americanized Chinese food I've ever devoured. TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) is braised with so much deliciousness it's ridiculous to visit any other similar joints. This place has been around for more than 20 years slangin' TVP ain't nothing fake about Long Life Vegi House but the meat baby. This is some double lip licking food. Orange Chicken made to order, crunchy, hot, orange sauce so good you will slurp it on its own. Beef Broccoli piping hot, marinated TVP oozing in comfort goodness, no skimping on the broccoli either.
