I know this place has 3 stars but I'm pretty sure most of the bad reviews were from a long time ago, back when they served Vietnamese food. I ordered the sesame paste noodles (B4) for $13 and my boyfriend ordered the roasted chicken leg with hand tossed noodles (B3) for $13. Saw this place when we went to get other food in this plaza and the staff was really friendly. The food was good and you get a lot for the price. The pork belly hand pulled noodles was what we ordered. Pork belly was tender and the noodles were bouncy and it had a nice chew to it. Stopped by on a random weekday night. I've passed it a few times before but always on the weekends or when they were closed. I got there just before 7pm and they were beginning to close so only takeout orders. The food took about 15 minutes. The operator gave me a bottle of water since I couldn't dine in, which was nice of them. I ordered the five spiced chicken leg over noodles. The portion was large. I could probably have split it into two meals. The noodles were bouncy and had a little spice to them which was a pleasant surprise (not hot just flavorful). The chicken leg was cooked well. The outer seasoning was good but didn't penetrate deep into the meat. All in all a great meal and service. Not a ton of parking or seating so beware. Decided to try this place after craving some Asian food while on the Northside. Place is super small but cozy inside of the Northside Asian Ghetto. While the food wasn't anything incredible, it hit the spot for me in terms of tasting like a comforting Asian home cooked meal. The portion was sizeable as well for $15 and I was able to split it up into two meals. I think it's pretty common knowledge that all the Asian restaurants in this mini Asian ghetto are just Chinese restaurants in disguise. This one in particular compares unfavorably with the nearby "Chinese" places. The prices are higher, the food is worse, the portions are smaller, and to top it all off, the food is served on paper plates instead of real plates. I've been here 3 times over the course of a year and each time ordered the Hanoi Beef over rice. It's never failed to be delicious and filling. Although on the saltier and oilier side, the sticky white rice underneath goes well with it. I like the thinly sliced, flavorful onions and simple, steamed broccoli. The sauce in the beef is this spicy chili Szechuan sauce my mom used to put in beef soups -- but I guess stir frying with it is just as delicious! If you look past the sticky chairs and tables, the food is actually quite yummy. It's piping hot and ready in no time. I recommend coming here before the lunch rush (noon) if you're tight on time. You'll get a decently sized meal that's perfect for a long study (or exam) day. Another observation: even though this place says that it's Vietnamese, it seems more Chinese. YUCK! A one-star across all boards!! This review is long overdue and this place is past overdue for a health inspection. From all the options at this Asian Ghetto, me and the old roomie Roy P. decided to have our catch-up lunch here. Biggest mistake I've ever made as a foodie!! We were both on a tight schedule, but this place was taking longer than usual with our orders. There's only so much me and my roommate can talk about without it getting awkward! We ran out of things to say that he eventually had to ask about our order. I had the pho with beef balls, and it was without a doubt the WORST bowl of pho I've ever had. Not only did it take forever and a day to come out, the soup tasted like hella grimey dishwater. You could see all the fat in the soup and the beef balls looked like shit lumps gone dry. They didn't even leave me with any Sriracha or hoisin sauce!! Now here's the worst part. We were seated outside, and in the middle of forcing myself to ingest this garbage, two flies flew right into my soup and met their tragic deaths like star-crossed lovers!! At that point I was done, I literally screamed out loud and turned some heads. My appetite was too gone to even complain. Besides, I don't think I would've gotten my point across with the terrible customer service we got. Trying to hunt down a waiter never took so much effort, I didn't even wanna deal. Avoid this place like the plague and run away with your life while you still can! My favorite dish is the chicken lemongrass. Three large pieces of chicken covered in sesame over rice with a salad side for $6.25 is hard to beat. I love this place. This is my favorite place on north side after gomnaru changed ownership and became way more expensive. Food runs around $7 for a good set of dishes. They have decent Pho and give you good portions for the price. The best things I've had at the chicken fried rice + egg (you get a cool fried egg!) and the coconut curry chicken. Best dishes for less than $7. The last thing I want to recommend is that even if you get a to go order, you can ask for an order of the small soup. It's good! It has little bits of tofu. It's a weekly ritual to stop on by after one of my classes gets out early on Tuesday (and before the next starts) to head on down to Camille and fit a filling, relatively cheap, and oh so tasty meal into my schedule. Literally, from the time I sit down in my class, all I can think about is how early the class will end, and how early I can strut on down and fill my stomach with that darn good lemongrass beef over rice (#16?). YUM! And for only $7.15? I'm down any day. There's really not much to say about this place, nor much about this place in general. Located in what I like to call "Asian Affluent," the Northside counterpart of Asian Ghetto (that looks much nicer, hence affluent), Camille always has someone ready to take your order, and usually with a kind attitude. The food is whipped up in a few minutes and 1-2-3, you're in heaven. I always get the food in a togo box because I usually have leftovers to take home with everything I eat, yet I've found myself shamed many times, finishing every single bit of the lemongrass beef. I've ordered their lemongrass chicken over rice, lemongrass pork with vermicelli, eggplant with chicken, seafood pot, and eggplant with beef. They're all good for Berkeley food standards. There's also self-serve tea and water. The crowd is mostly college students, and it gets pretty crowded during lunch time. This place is so convenient and close to the Compus. The waitresses are very pretty and warm. The food are much better than the TC garden but the prices are the same. In general a very unpleasant experience at the restaurant. We waited 40 minutes for our food to come. During the time, I tried to ask the owner about the status of the food very politely. He was being really really rude, raising his voice and accused me of not being patient enough at his "famous & popular" restaurant. And even started cursing me when I told him that we will be late for our class and if it's possible to get the food sooner. I am really upset and disappointed about the experience. I come here like 4-5 times a week, no joke dude, it's like 75% sad. The lady at the register is my BFF now. We rap in Chinese about nothing, it's great. Seriously though, I think I come here way too much. I love how these little pockets of cheap Asian eats are scattered all over Berkeley. It really prevents me from starving to death because ever since I've started the semester from hell, I just can't find the energy to go for "fun" meals anymore. Camille (Camilles? Camille's?) is great. I've had most of their dishes, and the lemongrass chicken rice is one of my favorites. It comes with this killer fried egg that has this weird sweet glaze on it. Brown sugar maybe, I don't know, but it's awesome. I also like their chicken & shrimp bun (vermicelli) and lately, have become quite fixated on the eggplant clay pot. It is a bit greasy though. Huge portions by the way. The only caveat is the system that they have in place for take-out orders. Instead of feigning any semblance of organization or control, what they do is march around with the food screaming, "NUMBA TWENTY-FO!!! This place is a hidden gem. The place might be a tad dingy and dirty, but the food is served quickly and tastes great. Granted it's not authentic Vietnamese cuisine, but the food is definitely tasty and prices are affordable. My favorites are the Beef Noodle Soup and Spicy Hot Pot. The beef broth has a very refreshing, savory flavor, thicker than that of a pho broth. It reminds me of authentic Chinese broth found on the streets of Asia. I usually don't like Chinese beef balls, but theirs are chewy without the fat and grittiness found in other Chinese beef balls. One bowl is seriously not enough for me, though the portion is generous. The spicy hot pot is a little on the salty side but when mixed with the rice, it balances out. I love the glass noodles and beef inside. The noodles just soak up all the spicy flavor without the saltiness. However, they put a lot of spam in there, so if you don't like spam, you might not want to get it. This dish is great for winter. read more

As a frequent eater at Camille, I have to mention its consistency, convenience and variety. It seems that that's the golden rule for a near-campus restaurant to survive. The large amount of students have left the restaurant no choice but mass-producing easily-prepared food. Two things I do think this place can improve: 1, Cleanliness. Apparently lots of previous reviews have mentioned this. Although I have never experienced unclean food, I do remember from time to time I have sat a table with oily surface. The customer area is also filled with some raw food materials. The dark-colored water cup sometimes makes me uncomfortable of drinking water from it. 2, Price. I have noticed the steady price rise of this restaurant, while the TC garden (another Asian restaurant nearby) has not. At this moment, Camille is on average 3 dollars more compared to TC garden. However, although Camille is indeed better than TC garden, I dont think it is worth 3 dollars more. One trick is that you can buy a 10-time card for 70 dollars which makes Camille much more attractive. read more

I came here often with my office mates and friends. We made it first choice for a quick lunch. I usually order eggplant pot and seafood tofu pot. I recommend getting the rice noodle plates or lemongrass pork. They cook their vegetables spot-on nice and crisp. Their pho is average, a step above Vietnam Village but below Le Petit Cheval. Their Vietnamese sandwich doesn't taste like a Vietnamese sandwich at all, but it's actually a pretty tasty sandwich. I recommend chicken or pork. It's meat, cucumber, carrots, shredded lettuce, and cilantro in a roll with a free drink. Good for a quick fix if you're in the neighborhood. For fast, delicious and cheap Asian food on northside, I go to Camille. Service is a bit slow during lunchtime because a lot of people like to come here so I usually come for dinner. People here are friendly and I usually get my food pretty quickly. Though slightly more expensive than its nextdoor neighbor TC Garden, the quality and portions are much better and well worth it at Camille. Some of my favorites: - Pho (much much better than The Pho Bar up on Euclid) - vermicelli noodles with lemongrass pork and egg roll - Banh Mi sandwiches (comes with a soda and soup!) - lemongrass pork with rice, fried egg, and salad I'm not sure if it's on the menu anymore, but the few times I had spring rolls (the non-fried kinds with shrimp, mint, and vermicelli noodles wrapped in rice flour) I was very happy. I've had the cold bug that's been going around for several days now, but due to a presentation I couldn't get out of class. Desperately, I looked around near my class building for some soup to calm my throat. I saw Camille across the street and like pho, so I figured I'd get some. I guess I should've known that a super cheap pho hole-in-the-wall aimed at 18-year-olds wouldn't be so good, but it didn't need to be THIS bad. My beef pho was really thick, when I'm used to clear broth, and the broth had chunks in it that were nothing but beef fat. eww. On top of that, the restaurant was really run-down and didn't look terribly clean. My stomach felt really unsettled after the meal, possibly due to a combination of way too much fat and unclean restaurant germs. It was cheap and cleared my throat, but that's about the only good thing I can say about it.
