The bread I've seen has been wrapped in plastic. So I'm comparing them to other bread bakeries that sell in plastic rather than to craft bakeries like Small State Provisions. I recently purchased Italian style sandwich rolls. They were definitely a step up from normal grocery store sandwich rolls that you would buy. I filled one with leftover roast turkey, Swiss and a few other toppings and panini-pressed it. It was obviously fresh and a good vessel for the sandwich. I can't say it was top tier though. 4 Stars

I bought an ice cream flight, two cookies, Silver Queen corn and heirloom tomatoes. I'm primarily reviewing the ice cream side of the business, but I'm factoring the other things in as well. Ice cream is always tasty, but I'd say the ice cream was about average for CT ice cream places making their own ice cream. I ordered a flight of Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Blueberry Cheesecake and Cow Palace. The flight came in a cup, rather than some sort of flat container that would keep the flavors separate. I feel like I had a good chance to try the Chocolate Peanut Butter (which reminded me of a Fudgesicle) and the Mint CC (which was kind of standard). The flavors below the top two, kind of blended into each other by the time I got to them. I picked up some cheesecake flavor and berry flavor and chocolate chips. All good. A highlight was the two cookies (a chocolate chip and a peanut butter chip). The kind person who helped me with my ice cream said she made the cookies that morning. My wife ate most of the cookies, but I tried both and they were fresh and delicious. I used a tomato for a BLT. It was good. The Silver queen corn was also good. Red Barn had a reasonably good selection of in season produce, baked goods such as pies, butter, milk, jarred goods. A good place to shop for stuff like that. Four Stars

There are about 15 stands set up fairly close to each other. Quite a bit of fresh produce was being sold- corn, squash, beans, carrots, etc. Also saw some vendors selling salsa and honey. I ended up stopping at a stand for Beldotti Bakeries of Stamford. Well, their big samples of fresh bread with mozzarella and pesto may have had something to do with me stopping. The freshness of eveything was amazing. The cranberry walnut bread was fresh as can be, soft and chewy with a nice crunchy crust, I was instantly a fan, and took home a beautiful and large loaf for just $6. I enjoyed this Farmers Market, and prefer it to the Simsbury Farmers Market.

That has to say something! I've had Cato Corner cheese in restaurants. I've bought it at farm stands and markets. But I've never had the pleasure of buying it at their Colchester farm. The small shop at the farm has all their cheese and some other items such as (1) CT Maple Syrup, (2) a CT made Manchego Bread that was fresh and satisfying, (3) cute little savory and sweet cracker-cookie hybrids that were a nice counterpoint to the good salty cheeses, (4) various meats in a cooler, and (5) dog treats that my dog, Pasta, loved. It's not the biggest CT produce season right now. Perhaps they have in season produce in the summer as well, but I couldn't say. I bought the Womanchego and Bloomsday cheeses. One would imagine that Womanchego is basically Manchego with a Wo added to the front to be fun. If I tried this cheese without knowing the name. I'm not sure I would have thought it was a Manchego, but it was good. It's a pale yellow, semi-hard and mild cheese, and it has small holes throughout. It was a bit earthy. Buttery. Creamy. Not really sharp. It was a good eating cheese. The Bloomsday looked similar, but it was sharper and seemed saltier in a good way. I'd be more likely to buy the Bloomsday again. In any event, they had probably over 10 cheese varieties in a number of different styles. I'm not sure if they offer cheese samples since nobody seemed to ask for samples while I was there, and I was in a hurry since my son was with me. I'm giving Cato Corner 4.5 Stars, which is partly based upon the fact that it's fun to buy directly from a farm at the farm, and upon the friendly service. You could see cows inside a structure. Wrong or right, that makes me think the milk and cream they use for the cheese is super fresh. Seems like a good bet. Maybe it doesn't matter that much since cheese is aged, but a lot of scoring businesses is how you feel about the presentation of the product. Cato Corner, with its CT farm and cool branding, makes me feel good. So 4.5 Stars.

It's open from Memorial Day through October on Saturdays from 8am until noon. There are 7 regular vendors with more joining periodically so the numbers grow. You'll find the bargain you are looking for here since the prices are significantly lower than other markets. Better yet, this market ACCEPTS SNAP/EBT! So you can pay in a variety of ways. If you are a farmer or an aspiring farmer yourself, you can also purchase your seedlings and plants here in the spring. You'll find seasoned farmers at this market as well as local youth who have lots of good, fresh stuff to share. Sometimes you can even get samples of the things you are interested in purchasing.
