I happened upon this quaint little bakery on my way for doughnuts for my girlfriends moms birthday. Decided to give them a go, and I must say it was a good stop! Going in I was greeted with a deli counter with pastries and the smell of fresh baked bread. The baker was curled up on a little rocking chair, cuddled in a blanket. Was the cutest thing I've seen, so had to pick up something. I opted for an assortment of pastries, letting the man behind the counter pick for me. I brought these home and had a little sampling with the girlfriend and the mom. Each one was flaky, almost to a fault due to the mess it made. filled with jams and preserves, sweet but not too sweet and varied enough to be uniquely tasty. All in all, not a bad little stop. My wife and I happened to be in town to visit a patient in the local hospital at around noon and were looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite when we spotted this unassuming bakery. The selection of baked goods was limited and the only sandwich offered was a ham and cheese on a baguette. We asked how large the roll was and realized one sandwich each would be too much for us so we shared one opting for Swiss cheese and mustard. The sandwich was good though on the dry side. The range of crusty breads: baguettes, multi-grains, pumpernickels, and sourdoughs; are all relatively cheap ($2 to $4). What she does, quite simply, is make wonderfully baked goods. The brioche, fluffy and flaky- is very good. Outside of the cookies, all of La Brioche's puff pastries: palmiers, danishes, cheese stars, raspberry/strawberry/apricot-filled, are made in-house. Colette's specialty though, and arguably my favorites, are her eclairs. Vanilla or chocolate, they are only $2 a piece and are without a doubt, melt-in-your-mouth! My kids and I have made it a tradition to grab some baked goods from here after getting my son's cut at Flint's Barbershop. We walk in greeting the French owners with a "bonjour" since that's the closest these kids are gonna get to their mother's French Canadian culture haha. The kids always choose the mini cookies, which is the perfect portion for them and they're only 50 cents or so. I always indulge with some of their fancier pastries like éclairés, cream puff swans, raspberry tartes, danishes, croissants, etc. I have gotten a ton of their pastries for my team at work too. I wish I could give more stars. The people that work there are top notch but the pastries are not. Been there twice (about 7 months apart) and each time the pastries (croissants and fruit pastries) were dry and over baked. Had an Almond Croissant yesterday and it was burned and hard. Cannot vouch for the bread but if the pastries are always overdone I'd guess they would be as well. I'll probably give it a third try in a few months but that'll be the last time read more

Amazing cheesecake. This store is in an area that is a little scary for me. There was no one on the street and only a few cars in the parking lot. I came here because of the high reviews but was a little suspicious of the quality due to the surroundings. I bought four pieces of pastries including two cheese cakes and it only costed $13, much cheaper than many places. The cake was delicious! So soft and creamy! I ordered the King Cake for Mardi Gras. I know this would not the same as the traditional New Orleans cake, but the man assured us it was better because it was filled with almond and apricot. We couldn't wait to try it since it looked beautiful. We ate it later in the day and it lacked filling and moisture; a true disappointment and a waste of $35. It was extremely dry and if not for the icing tasted like stale bread. Another thing regarding their customer service: I called to order the cake and asked it to be ready at 12:30 on Sunday; the baker laughed at me and said no 1:00 pm since she had so many to bake. Okay, whatever. We received a call at 12:40 telling us to pick up the cake since they were closing at 1:00 p.m. Really people? When we arrived we saw at least six king cakes in the case. First and foremost, I'm not rating their baked goods. I have never tasted them. This is a review of a special order and interaction with staff. I ordered a king cake for my husbands birthday party. I called 1 week ahead of time. I asked if they could makes a king cake. Worker wasn't sure, asked baker. Yes, they're willing to do it even though it was after king cake season. Great. Took my name and number and asked when is like to pick it up. In one week. Sunday at 11am. Done. That woman was great to talk to. I send my sister in law to pick it up before the party. They didn't make it! They said they tried to call. But I received no call. She said there was no real apology. Huge bummer. What do you do when you're on your way to a party with no cake? Go to the grocery store and get a bleh non-descript cake. Not what I was hoping for that special day that I planned for a week in advance. I called the manager. He didn't apologize either. Just said, she didn't have the equipment for the king cake, and really passed the buck and blamed the baker. I think I've gone on enough. You get the point. read more

The first thing that hits you after you find this little gem tucked away in a non descript tired little strip mall in the center of town is the smell..OH MY GOD..the SMELL!!! If I could bottle that smell... I came here on a quest for some authentic French pastries and breads after a recommendation from a fellow Yelper and I was not disappointed. The price points are well below what they should be charging first off simply because the amount of amour poured in to these creations is simply priceless, and not only are they beautiful, they are delicious. I ordered up a variety of things as I was having "Journey to Paris" via cuisine for 7 and 8 yr old Brownie Girl Scouts at my home that evening. So a baguette, some brioches, sara surprises, and a few other treats fit the bill for the tasting stations..all under $20. Sadly, we did not get to dive into these creation until much later in the evening so we did not get to experience them in their 8am glory, however they were still magnificent. Great French style pastries. One lady does most of the preparing and baking. I grew up with my father who was in the bakery business so I have some experience working in a bakery, and preparing foods. All the pastries are excellent. I like the location too, much better than where it used to be. The lady who owns and works here is from France and is very nice to talk to. I do wish there was a larger seating area and also she only makes so much that she runs out at some point during the afternoon. But it's worth the trip and the taste is excellent. This place will definitely make you stop going to most bakeries especially the chain stores. read more

Well the pastries might be tasty but the service is lacking. I went there and placed an order. Days in advance. I requested to pick it up on a Saturday at 11am. I specifically said it couldn't be any later than that because I had to drive 2 hours for a Christmas party after picking the desserts up. The person i spoke to assured me that was not a problem. Had they been honest from the start and said that couldn't be guaranteed I would've respected the honesty and went elsewhere. I showed up at the agreed upon time and was told it wouldn't be ready for another 3 hours. No phone call telling me there was a delay. No apology. Nothing. So thanks for screwing over a customer. Because of you I had no dessert to bring to my party. And because of your poor service I will never go there again. read more

I went there with a French class from UConn Storrs - our professor insisted we meet there at 8am which was an effort. Now I see why - the owner gets up really early to make her bread and pastries daily so it's best to get them while they're hot - literally. As part of our assignment we had to ask the owner how she does it - turns out she uses a recipe from her native Alsace in France. She gave us the grand tour of accessories and then we sat down and had almond pastries and coffee. La Brioche is great! We just moved to Ellington less than a year ago & I had been looking for a good French bakery for years. Had been craving a Mille Feuille cake :) I was shocked to find La Brioche was only 10 mins away! A week later, we were invited to a party & I decided to ask Collette to make us the cake for the occasion. Being a short notice (I called the morning of the party), Collette was happy to oblige. I have lived in Vernon for several years, but this morning was the first time that I visited La Brioche. The new location is much more convenient and inviting than the old one, but I am sorry that I waited so long! You must try the chocolate croissant. The taste took me back to Paris and the service was warm and friendly. Don't be alarmed by the steamed up windows in the morning; that just means everything is fresh, fresh, fresh. A must visit.
