However, I can't help myself when it comes to Long's Bakery, a longtime family favorite and a special treat in my life way back to my childhood days when I would spend weeks and even months in the hospital with my main reward being stops before and after hospitalizations at the Tremont Street location of Long's Bakery. Long after many bigger and supposedly better bakeries have come and gone, humble ole' Long's Bakery continues to thrive with only two locations, Tremont Street and this Southside location that I didn't even discover until I found myself dating a Southsider and Long's happened to be on the way to her house. While I never stopped in those days, the sacrifices one makes when dating an in shape former professional cheerleader, I always swore to myself that one day I would actually try this spot out. Well, now. Today, I happened to be on the Southside hoping to try out a new Beech Grove bakery but disappointed to discover it wasn't wheelchair friendly. The former professional cheerleader is long gone and so is my commitment to anything resembling fitness. Located in a free-standing building that seems to be part of a loosely connected web of buildings, Long's Bakery has a private parking lot along with a few front spots. They do not have accessible parking, a slight downer considering they tend to be rather crowded, but in this case I'm not docking a star. It is worth noting, however, that if you're in a larger power chair that you may run into some issues here. I like to joke, though these days it's fairly serious, that the Southside location of Long's is the location you go to when you are really craving Long's donuts but you don't actually want to get shot. The truth is, however, that this location is in a much safer area while I must stress that I myself have never had issues at the other location. Long's keeps things simple. They don't take credit cards or checks...cash only. Prices are, in fact, a little lower because of that fact with my three donut purchase today coming in at just over $2. I mean there are donut shops in town, I'm looking at you Dancing Donut, where $2 won't even buy you one donut. You enter through a front door that is level to the ground. It's a little heavy, but not too bad. You take an immediate left to enter the line. You work your way through the line, which early this afternoon was surprisingly light, and then pay at a cash register at the end of the line. While the Tremont location has a reputation for occasionally iffy customer service, there were no such issues here as everyone I encountered was super friendly and helpful. In fact, the customers were also super friendly. I ordered three "double chocolate" donuts, essentially a chocolate donut with chocolate frosting. I'm fairly certain I had an orgasm. Or three. In fact, despite the fact that they don't have dine in or outside seating (unless you want to check out the nearby cemetery) I can honestly say the donuts didn't make it to the car. Yum. Long's has long been one of my favorite donut shops. They are most famous for their yeast donuts, though they carry a wide variety of other baked goods and I've never had a bad one from Long's even when I arrive in the afternoon. I can't say that for every donut shop (I'm looking at you Jack's). Seriously, I have happy memories of Long's from childhood and today was a quick but treasured trip down memory lane and a delightful experience in terms of customer experience and quality of product. Now that cheerleaders, okay former cheerleaders, are no longer knocking on my door asking for dates, I could easily see myself becoming a Long's regular once again. Stopped in for a couple of dozen cookies for customer appreciation at 7.00 a dozen and from rave reviews worth every penny. They have so many sweet treats to choose from and have since 1955. Google Best Dinut in Indiana....you will come up with Long's Donuts. The other day I decided to stop in around 9:30 a.m. on a Wednesday. The inside is minimal, no fancy decorations just lots and lots of yummy donuts. Although the donuts taste amazing, the eclair was my favorite. If you love egg custard like me it is a must try! It's crazy how much egg custard they stuff their eclair with and it tastes so, so good. Parking can be tight during peak hours. Even with big crowds staff are hustling to get through people quickly without being rude or seeming irritated. The staff that helped me were quick, professional and friendly. If I could give no stars or negative stars I would. I am super disappointed in the staff at this location. My boyfriend, who is a black man, went in asking to place our order at the counter. The female staff immediately was giving rude looks towards him, as he began to tell and point to the the lady his order she began to correct him loudly on the names of the donuts and then turning around to look at the other staff members and laugh at him for not knowing the "proper" names of donuts. He would say the glazed twisted long donuts and she would loudly go "actually they are ..." and turn to laugh with her coworkers. For one portion of our order the lady had to retrieve the donuts from the back of the store area and when she returned she glanced at her coworkers and again began laughing as if some inside joke about the donuts or if the donuts were in some way "messed with" this made me feel extremely uncomfortable in even eating the donuts at this location. My boyfriend completed the order by asked for 2 things of white milk the lady then goes on to slowly pronounce all the different milk options and tell him the expiration dates on them. Never in my life have I had them read me the expiration date to me. Feels completely targeted and as if the staff intended to embarrass him. He left feeling uncomfortable and quite frankly like he'd been racially targeted. Plenty of customers were ahead and behind him that were not treated that way. I feel like this shouldn't be a thing but Longs bakery only excepts cash here. There has to be as little as 1% of businesses that only except cash. Well @LongsBakery you could have had an additional paying customer. But because you don't accept credit cards, you didn't get the sale. 2000 called and said they want their way of doing things back.
