Came with my family on a weekend night and decided to try this place out. Parking was easy as it's shared with CVS but the place was super empty which already seemed a bit of a miss. Usually skewer places are pretty lively and while they did have traditional Cantonese music playing with LED lights, it was pretty quiet. The waitress brought out a tray with candles located inside to heat up the food. We ordered some skewers, preserved egg with tofu, grilled eggplant, and grilled bean curd skin. Everything was WAY too oily and felt super fattening. The beef was hard and overcooked. The only thing that was decently good was the grilled eggplant which was unique... but again way too oily. read more

Quickly ran in to pick up my Too Good To Go drink order. Two sweet ladies greeted me and handed the drinks over. I'll have to come back to eat because the food was smelling pretty amazing. Both drinks I received were a dark green color. When I had asked what drinks were in the bag, I was just told green tea. Upon opening at home and taking my first sip, it was very citrusy and slightly sweetened but I couldn't quite make out the exact flavor. Aptly name the Long Time Ago BBQ bar because we should have received our food a LONG TIME AGO. We came here on a Friday night at around 10 PM where there were a couple tables of guests but there was still a decent amount of seating left, so it wasn't during a super rush. Later on more parties came and they had to wait to be seated. So it is quite a popular late night spot where you don't have to venture into LA or the main parts of SGV. You seat yourself and order via a QR code, as many of these skewer places are. However, unlike the other places, there's no details on what each item is, how many skewers you get, etc., so I'm assuming it's based on what's in the image. Through this order system there is also no option to call over a server for service or for water, unlike other places. We just had to flag down the waitress. It was around 40 minutes between our first 2 skewer orders (2 items ordered) and our third item ordered (these were all ordered during the same batch). This was for 5 skewers of the special beef. The spices on the meat has some chili on it, but the table only has salt or cumin, would be nice if they had some spicy powder. In comparison to other skewer places, I felt that the variety is also much less here in terms of the other dishes they offer and the skewer themselves. With lots of other late night skewer spots, Long Time Ago doesn't hit the mark for me unfortunately. read more

This skewers place is located in a strip mall in the same parking lot where CVS is on Las Tunas and El Monte Ave. I've been here twice and both times have been pleasant. The skewers are made readily available for you to enjoy whereas some places, they have the skewers rotating and cooking in front of you. Though I enjoy relaxing eating skewers, I like it readily available and still heated on the foil. We've tried their lambs, marinated beef, regular beef, cheese corn, clams and others, all of them taste so good. Atmosphere is great here. Let me start by saying that this is more of a 3.5/5 stars review but I think they can make some huge adjustments and improve. This restaurant Hen Jiu Yi Qian translate to a long time ago which has always been open every time I drove by at night. I gave this restaurant a few tries and these are my overall thoughts. When you first walk into this restaurant, everything is in Chinese which makes it really difficult for those that don't speak the language. The food overall was great. I would say the flavors of the skewers are seasoned well and the service is really good. We tried a huge variety of skewers from the beef, pork, and chicken. Everything is great and comes out in a fast manner. Despite that fact there are some fundamental issues that I would highly recommend them fixing. 1. Remove the microwave and don't use them when it comes to heating food. I think it's sort of strange and disrespectful to the customer that you openly have a microwave next to the cashier that you use. 2. Having children running around. While I fully support family restaurants, I think having children running around with customers there is a awful image to leave. 3. I also know that we are in the 626 area and they are catered towards the Chinese clientele but one suggestion is to have some English menus or focus on all of Arcadia and its neighbors. I do miss when they used to have the electric grill to cook the skewers yourself, but the skewers now are still flavorful & texturally decent. I was a little disappointed with the crawfish as the sauce itself was very watery to me, and the peppercorns overpowered everything else. 10 points out of 10 for this hidden gem! We live around this area, and find this location to always be opening a new restaurant just to be closing in the next couple of months. I've been wanting to try a Chinese BBQ/skewer place, and this was the perfect spot for it. We had a 20% off coupon from a local magazine and came here on a Friday night. Arriving at 6:30pm, this place was ~quiet~ We sat at the edge of the restaurant, and there was maybe 1 additional occupied table. This definitely is a nightie's spot, as more and more people trickled in later into the evening and eventually filled up the entire restaurant. Louder music began playing and tables near us were consuming more alcoholic beverages too. Definitely seems like a poppin and fun place! As for the food itself, they were amazing. Sufficient options and the quantity was good. Skewers are on the smaller side, but each order comes with quite a few skewers and the orders will definitely fill you up. There are also other cold apps or noodle/rice dishes if you weren't in the mood to just eat skewers. When our bill came, we were honestly surprised at how cheap everything was. Not including the 20% discount, our bill for a table of 6 came out to be just north of $120! This price is inclusive of ordering a total of 7 beers! We took a closer look to the dishes' price and was so surprised at how cheap everything was. We hope the price isn't too cheap, and the restaurant can stay in business. TLDR: A hole in the wall with hole in the wall entrees amongst mundane, average dishes. Standouts were the eggplant fried rice and the cabbage and lamb hot pot. Why the lower rating? Service was lackluster, and there was inappropriate notice that only orders over $40 could pay with card. Hen Jiu Yi Qian is an excellent late night munches kinda location, something you'd expect to find in Asia. Although they feature skewers and smaller portion'd dishes, there are also entrees that can be ordered. Our table ordered the cabbage and lamb pot, pickled cucumbers, eggplant fried rice, and spicy cold noodles. This is a smaller restaurant, and when we entered we were able to be seated immediately around midnight. There were many open tables, but they put us at a table behind a large party. Getting in and out of that location was a pain, and the table behind us consistently disturbed me despite my chair being all the way up and me having sat sideways. While they brought us water, they were slow on refilling the water, and the staff that were there were focused on eating their dinner. I'm not sure what their priorities were, but we felt like we simply existed. What made up for it? Surprisingly, the food! I have to admit I wasn't excited to eat what I would consider pretty standard Chinese dishes. They provided complimentary peanuts, which were salty and moist - as expected. Our first dish to dig in was the eggplant fried rice, which took me by surprise. There may have been cumin, but there was definitely hints of cumin. I didn't notice too much eggplant in the fried rice, but the taste was so unique I couldn't help but fall in love with it. It is on the stickier end but not sticky rice, and it holds together very well, with few rice grains falling off individually. The lamb hot pot came next, and the lamb tasted so strong I would've believed you if you told me it was freshly butchered an hour ago. It was most definitely on the gamier end, and it is unlike most other lamb at other restaurants. Other than that, the broth was on the saltier end, and there was tofu with noodles. The pickled cucumbers were alright. They had hints of vinegar and sugar, but they were quite mushy and not crisp. Tolerable but not outstanding. The spicy cold noodles were as expected and a less sour and spicy version of Korean cold noodles. I can't say which version I like more because it tasted pretty average to me. Overall, there were standout dishes amongst the average ones but poor service. In addition, card is only accepted on orders over $40, but there isn't good signage so you wouldn't know unless you walked up to the cashier and paid. read more

When being seated the server said something in Chinese and my friend doesn't speak Chinese. But I heard what he said and basically... if we want to cook it ourselves, but my friend didn't understand and the server took off so quickly. We noticed that this place had just opened up fairly recently and decided to pop in for an early dinner to give it a try. Now, this place seems to be going through an identity crisis and it's clear that they don't know what type of atmosphere they want to create. There are sections of the restaurant that had cute decor then other sections where it seems like a nightclub, with strobing lights, LEDs and music blasting. The skewers were decently priced and the food was kinda what you'd expect. It wasn't particularly good or bad and as with many Chinese skewers, the cumin carried most of the taste. For most tables, there's only one grill and the servers recommended that we cook the food for about 10 minutes which was a fun experience at first, but became a very drawn out process given that there's only one grill per table. If you don't want to wait that long, you can actually ask them to cook the skewers in the kitchen where they probably have a larger flame and can handle larger quantities. If you're hungry I'd recommend having them cook a portion of your order so that you have something to eat while being able to enjoy the experience without going hungry for too long. About halfway through the dinner, they dimmed the lights and began blasting music of a wide range of genres and the atmosphere became a bit awkward. Later into the evening, they have open karaoke which I didn't stick around and I imagine it would be a fun experience to visit with friends once karaoke starts to enjoy an extended visit over some drinks and dice games. This might be a place I'd come to have fun night out but not specifically for the food. Something to pay attention to is that each has a power cable that connects to outlets that are placed on the floor in the isle in between tables so be careful! A few people have tripped over them during my short visit. By the way, they have complimentary ice cream but you might need to ask for it! read more

The combos (A&B) are a good size for 2 people, and the portion & quality are both 5/5 for me. (It's now $45 for the 2 person combos). I absolutely LOVE Chinese lamb and beef skewers! I write this review in hopes that they get their service together and bring more flavor to their food. The meat is a little bland, I'm spoiled by similar restaurants in the area that have great flavor that isn't overpowered by spice in their skewers.
