This place is the GOAT when it comes to Shanghainese food in SGV. My family is from the province right next to Shanghai, so I grew-up eating food from the region. My mom is an excellent home-cook, as was her mom. I drive alll rhe way out from West L.A. to eat at Chang's Garden. Sure, some other Shanghainese places in the SGV are a much shorter drive, but they just don't have all of the classics on the menu. Here's what I ordered this past weekend:: Tofu skin mushroom goose (7/10) Cucumber salad (8/10) Tung Po pork belly (9/10l Shoyu meat balls aka Lion's Head meatballs (9/10) Seaweed fried fish (8/10) Shanghai chewy rice cake (6/10) Omelet veggie rice (8/10) Sheng Jian bao (9/10) XLB (7/10) Billl came-out to $185 including tax and tip. Took it to-go, so the rice cake and XLB scores are lower than they would've been for dine-in. So much food! We finally had the Pork! One of their favorite dishes! It was tender and juice, but was missing soy sauce flavor and sweetness; Cucumber was very good, sweet, tangy and crunchy; Chicken was a bit disappointing, the meat wasn't taste like cage-free chicken, and we didn't expect it was a warm dish; Steam soup dumplings went ok; Tofu dish was the best one for me on that day! Green beans with four-skin was good too; Candied walnuts with shrimp was normal. Dishes came out very quick. The server was friendly. We were so excited to have our reunion at this restaurant, the menu was amazing, we wanted to order and try so many things. There were so many classic Chinese Shanghainese dishes that's hard to find elsewhere these days. Unfortunately, when we got the dishes, they were just so so. The dishes all tasted fine but either not exactly the right color or the right taste that we'd expect. My family have been coming here ever since it opened almost 15 years ago. The food used to be REALLY REALLY good. The food is still good but a bit more of a hit or miss. For this Lunar New Year, we booked the private room for 2 hours and ordered many dishes. I will highlight the dishes I liked: spicy eggplant, lotus leaf wrapped pork rib with sticky rice (this is one of their specialities), their braised pork (Dung Pao Pork) is famous, Kung pao chicken and I also liked their taro dessert (eight treasure taro dessert). We went for late lunch here: sauteed shrimp, xiao Lund bao, stewed beef noodle soup and soybean sauce tilipia. Food came out fine: love the Xiao Lund Bao with just right skin thickness and flavoring of the filling, the beef noodles tasted great, the shrimp very tender. The fish took some use to get used to but soon I loved the sauce. This is a place to get something close to Shanghainese food as most Shanghainese places seem to have closed nowadays. read more

I love coming here for some comfort Chinese food. The food is consistently good and the staff is always friendly. It's a solid go-to for me when I'm craving some Chinese food! I really like their meatballs. Great flavor, comes with some napa cabbage, and pairs really well with some rice. The bean curd stir fry is also one of my favorites (although fyi it's slightly on the oily side). Portion sizes are generous too. I always leave happily stuffed. Stumbled across this restaurant while taking care of an errand, the wife and I were starting to get hungry, so why not. Interior was nicely decorated in a modern contemporary look. Dining area was clean, staff was nice, helpful and attentive. The wife ordered a deep fried fish, laying over a bed glass noodles, topped in a mildly spicy, reddish brown gravy, with a few misc veggies, tofu and cilantro. Use caution when eating, because this is a whole fish with bones throughout. Whole fried or steam fish is not normally my first choice, because of dealing with the bones could be a pain in the rear sometimes, but the flavor of this dish was really spot on, packed full of flavor, sauce was mildly spicy as requested by my wife. I ordered a beef omelet which looked like a large pancake, sitting in a brown gravy, topped with cilantro. I took one bite and it just put a smile on my face, simply delicious. The pancake was filled with velvety marinated beef slices, along with grilled onions & bell pepper. Picking 2 great tasting dishes, along with friendly staff and a clean restaurant. What more could you ask for. Will definitely be back to try other menu items. 4.5 stars from me. read more

Just came back from my trip to Norfolk Virginia, and I decided rather than going to my usual spot Corner Beef Noodle Soup down in El Monte and Ramona, I decided to check out Changs Garden. 唉... Hear me out the menu looks exciting, I'm sure if I we're to order some Hangzhou style stir fry cuisine, I may be very well impressed, but I decided to go with simplicity. Their beef noodle soup had fairly good feedback, so I went for an order. And of course, might as well order some Xiao Long Bao while I'm at it. Ok. In my honest opinion. I'm not a fan of the noodle soup. I feel, this is what was served by Mr. Dragon 30 years ago in the Hong Kong Supermarket on Colima Rd and Fullerton Ave, and even back then I was never really impressed by Mr Dragon other than from what I remembered...the food was working class and fed single household parents and their children. You get what you pay for. And I think a restaurant in a neighborhood like Arcadia, if you are gonna advertise top notch beef noodle soup, it should live up to a certain level of expectations. The Xiao Long Baos tasted maybe a level better than 99ranch Frozen Xiao Long Bao. So both dishes would not be something I'd come back and order again. I've seen Chang's Garden in this plaza over the decade and just never decided to give it a go. Usually back then, we'd come out here to go to Sin Ba La. But like I said, judging this restaurant based on two dishes isn't fair. And so I'm going to order two more items to go: Beef Rolls, and Sweet Soy sauce chicken stir fry, Chang's Stir Fry, Leeks and Smoked Pork Belly. I had a really nice time here and the food was pretty tasty. The service was good and the servers were nice. I liked that they offered a couple tea options to pick from. I chose chrysanthemum. Although, a tea kettle is not complimentary, it's $5. I really liked their tea pot. I think it was made of iron. It was heavy and really well made. I tried the hot and sour soup. It was delicious with lots of mushroom, bamboo and pork. I tried the sweet lotus and that was pretty good, not too sweet. I always love the chewy texture or lotus. Then I tried the shoyu meatballs. This is a local restaurant near my parent's place and my hometown. Their food has always been good and they have a great selection of pretty authentic Chinese food for any taste. The restaurant has decent parking because in a plaza with decent parking. It sometimes can get crowded during lunch hours. Food - We ordered a variety of dishes. I love the Pineapple Shrimp. It is similar to the popular Walnut Shrimp dish except that they use pineapple instead of walnuts making it less heavy. I enjoy the thinly bettered shrimp and the light flavor. They don't overly use the mayo. Also, I like kung pao 3 way with the shrimp, chicken, and beef. I love the flavor of the dish and the variety of protein used. The last dish ordered is the spicy black bean fish fillet. It was a nice balance of salty and spicy. It is overall a good dish for those who like fish. Oh my gosh... this meal was life-changing. The dishes here are all seasoned so well and have a truly authentic Chinese feel to them. Their lunch special prices are ungodly reasonable and totally worth it. Decent Chinese food and it feels like it's family owned. My favorite is the fried fish fillet, and it was so delicious every time. I enjoyed taking my parents there. I have had multiple great experiences dining here with my parents but we visited this past Chinese New Year and felt the food was not very good. The rice tasted weird, like it was not fresh. The DongPo pork belly was not seasoned correctly. It was not an usual quality of food we have had in the past. However, I would still go back and hoping they improve their quality after being not as busy. The service is great and fast. The server is quite attentive. This doesn't really say much as the Chinese food competition in the 626 overall is tight and like my husband, the 626 native says, "almost all regions of China are represented in the 626." Chang's Garden, specializing in Shanghainese cuisine with some Cantonese stir fries and soups and Taiwanese dishes, has been my husband's family's favorite ever since they opened over 20 years ago. I first visited this restaurant last month with my husband and most of his family. I could tell that my mom/dad-in-law are regulars as a couple servers greeted them loudly! My mother-in-law made reservations. The restaurant looked spacious, bright, and clean! We were served tea and boiled peanuts once we were seated and once we ordered dinner. Being a large family of regulars and with so many tasty choices, my in-laws ordered in a frenzy, but I was excited! Since we were in a frenzy, I could only happily and quickly take pictures of the food without identifying them. I only found names to dishes weeks after dinner. For seven adults and two kids, we ordered the following dishes, all amazing: Taiwan's Best Beef Noodle Soup (牛肉麵) Madam Sung's Fish Chowder (宋嫂魚羹) Shanghai Chewy Rice Cake (上海炒年糕) Fried Crispy Tofu in Spicy Sauce Signature 8 Treasures Tofu (八珍豆腐) Some Wood Ear Mushroom Veggie Stirfry Salty Egg Yolk Fried Bitter Melon (鹹蛋黃炒苦瓜) My favorites were the fish chowder and Shanghai rice cake. I loved all the dishes except for the bitter melon dish. I don't like bitter melon, period, but according to my in-laws, the salted egg yolk helped mask the melon's bitterness. Servers are attentive, even when cleaning up after parties leave. As if Chang's Garden needed more reason to be awesome, a future Chi Cha San Chen boba shop will open right next to them. We love Chang's garden! It is a restaurant that we frequent! Never disappoints! Fast, delicious and tasty Chinese food. My favorite is their hot and sour soup! My boys love their xianlongbao, dried sautéed string beans, fried fish filet. Nothing in the restaurant disappoints. The service is great. The dishes that I have personally enjoyed included the beef roll, smoked tea duck, and the ham and wintermelon soup (a classic Chinese soup I have missed dearly). The food was absolutely delicious. It wasn't too salty or sweet it was perfect and everything was family style. We got the family combo that feeds 6 people. We had 8 people but the 6 people combo meal was perfect. It had 6 dishes and they were good portioned sizes. It came with the fried fish, shrimp, XLB, pork belly, soup, and green beans. My family and I use to eat and order take outs from here for the past 20+ years. The food and service have always been authentic and friendly. Maybe the chef and or/owner have changed, because my latest visit getting take outs was dissapointing. The flavors and taste was definitely not like before, eggplant was too sour, color was off, the other regular dishes ordered from the past were either not cooked correctly or just tasted no better than Panda express! This long time restaurant is uneven in quality. Some of specialties it serve is decent . We like the vegetarian duck. We ordered the corn soup and was a disaster, not even delicious. The waiter delivered a plate of three raw fried buns to our table and they were delicious . We thought it was complementary but it turned out it was ordered by the table next to ours and delivered to my table in error. The restaurant charged us $9.95 which we thought was outrageous. In addition, a pot of weak tea would cost you $4.95. Very expensive for one tea bag. The restaurant does offer some $9.95 dishes even for dinner. read more

So my main problem wasn't the food, nor the service. I actually enjoyed all of the older ladies' services. They are very very polite, every single one of them. I thought the food was very decent. It is a Chinese cuisine from Hangzhou China, so it's got a lot of specialties that other Chinese food has. Just like if you were to go to a Beijing cuisine Chinese restaurant, or a Shanghai cuisine Chinese restaurant, they all have different specialty dishes. The main problem was at the very end of our meal, we had gift cards we wanted to use, the owner or the manager, not sure who he is, (the only man that was there), but he said he tried one card and it didn't work and he refused to try the other gift card and just outright refused our gift card. We were quite confused on why he wouldn't allow us to use the gift card. But that was our main problem. So it is a 3 star instead of 5 star. read more
