Being a "member" of a local winery in Healdsburg has grown tired. I recently went there for a "complimentary" tasting after having enjoyed a glass of wine (2021 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, $12), a Cheese Box ($12), and a movie ("Pretty Problems", part of the Alexander Valley Film Festival) while sitting in Longboard's chill Barrel Room under a nice warm blanket. I'd enjoyed the whole vibe of Longboard Vineyards, with classic surfboards artistically mounted all over, and a friendly and welcoming feeling that permeated the place and the event I'd come for. When I followed that with a visit to the winery at which I'm a member I was met with what can only be described as the most rote of experiences. The server literally recited the exact same lines she'd used to talk about the wines on a previous visit and did so without ever looking me in the eyes to see that I was engaged. I wasn't. By the time I was headed back home I'd decided to cancel my membership at the second place I went to for what amounted to this reason: At Longboard I can get exactly what I'd like - a well-priced and satisfying glass of wine - in a comfortable and unpretentious setting. Yes, it's not a vineyard setting but it's a little off of Healdsburg's busy downtown and because of this, feels like a place you gain credibility for by even knowing it exists. Longboard's actual tasting room was a unique experience, blending endless technicolor surfing videos with tasty wine to try. They had cute souvenirs, caps and wine related gadgetry for sale. The down side was that the only place with tables and chairs for visitors was in the cavernous "metal building" adjacent the tasting room (no chairs here) which was freezing cold and had no atmosphere to speak of. The lady tasting room attendant was severely no nonsense and would not consider letting us sit inside the tasting room even though we were the only visitors in the whole place. read more

Stopped in after a recommendation from Brauny & Dana (yes, the paper towel guy!). The Owner / Winemaker, 'Oded', from Israel, very cool chill guy. He's a surfer that's how fit he is, chatted for awhile out front- everyone is masked and following protocols. Then sat out front at a picnic table with a heater and Jodie came out periodically and wonderfully educated about a Rose' of Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir 'Mystos' vineyard, and a cold climate Syrah. I enjoyed the Rose- well crafted Syrah varietal comes through with a touch of acidity (not sweet, Russian River SB (think cooler region than most) was accessible, dynamic and seems to me will develop over a few years- always awesome with a wine that traditionally has a short life. Others loved the Pinot Noir! I feel like it's need more time to come together and I could taste all of the phenolics that will make this a more interwoven (flavors mesh) and outstanding Pinot Noir. Case in Point, just because it's not perfect for me Right Now, doesn't imply that you will not Love it. 3 other people there felt it was spot on. Definitely well structured with all kinds of nuances coming thru - Cherry Cola, Raspberry, Crushed Violets, twig, wet slate, camphor/eucalyptus quality, potting soil, saddle leather and a long lingering finish. Will evolve into a Gorgeous Wine. And I absolutely loved the Syrah. Cold climate means they pick early and/or it's a cooler region ie Northern Rhône- with ripe blackberry, blueberry, tend to get more white pepper, earth, etc. LOVE - the winemaker obviously has a lot of experience making rich delicious wines. 1st let me start off by saying that I'd been wanting to come to this vineyard since I saw a piece done on the winery & the owner on a tv show called In Wine Country that used to air on the very early morning. Since then (2009) I made myself a promise that if I ever found myself in Healdsburg, I would go. I finally made it to Healdsburg & the winery. It was everything I thought it would be then, as it is now. The wine room has a really chill vibe to it. Surfboards adorn the tasting area and the barrel room. Jody & Heidi, the ladies running the tastings that day were very informative & patient in explaining the different varietals they make. There was also a young man there whose name escapes me promptly handed me a tasting of Rosé. I got to relax briefly in the barrel room, tasting their spectacular wines, while "working" as I had some emails to catch up on my laptop. They do provide a small little menu of cheese, cured meats & a selection of hand pies. I even got to meet the owner himself (Oded Shakked). He was gracious enough to take a picture with me while I fanboyed a bit. If you're looking for a small Sonoma County boutique winery with zero pretentiousness, this is the place for you. Jody even gave me some great recommendations on where to dine while I visited their town. Attended an independent film festival here a little while ago and it's a very cozy venue. Although there's only one countertop for wine tasting and you aren't able to explore the grounds at all, the space is super clean and it's walking distance to downtown Healdsburg which is super cute and has lots of lunch and shopping options. Went winetasting at Longboard yesterday. Nick was a fantastic host and shared knowledge about Longboard and other wines that we had inquired about. The wines were so good, that we stacked up! He was a great host, made us feel at home. We enjoyed wonderful Longboard wines and the food snacks that are avaialble were fun and tasty. I never really saw myself as a white wine fan. I thought all the good wines were from napa and sonoma, and basically started and ended at well-aged Cabernet. Thankfully, as I too aged into a more subtle and nuanced age, I realized in a moment of sadness that this was not the person I had to be! No! Whites were out there and roses too! And all sorts of wonderful wines that will make you transport to a place or time better than the one you're in! This, dear friends, is the power of a well-crafted bottle of wine, and Longboard is one of the best places to find it. When my husband and I moved to Hawaii, we hand selected some wines to take with us and store in our wine cellar. On one particularly hard Navy day, I very grudgingly skulked to our wine library and pulled out a bottle of Longboard 2013 Chardonnay from their Rochioli Vineyard. I poured a generous glass for myself and my husband and then something magical happened... I was no longer having an ultra cruddy day in hawaii, I was in Sonoma, feeling the sun, drinking in the Healdsburg air, and feeling free. My husband, concerned, asked me why I was crying and I of course blamed it on this perfect glass of wine. It had the power to salve my sadness and take me to a place of north county peace. This was an exceptional glass of happiness. On my return trip this month, I went back, got to meet the amazing owner, and snagged 4 of the remaining 6 from that year and plot. If you're reading this and saying " OH man, I missed out!!" never fear! Their other wines are good too! They have a few types of bubbly that you cannot miss, and their Kahuna red from the owner's vineyard is the perfect balance of bold red, friendly tannins, and north sonoma fruit. Some of their entry level wines found at local stores are not really to my liking, but you know, to each their own! Price is comparable to other small vintners, parking is free and onsite, the location is a little hokey with all the surf memorabilia, but if you can get past it, you will find yourself some really good wine. read more

This place is perfect to get your groove on....there's an athletic appeal in that you want to take your clothes off and put on a pair of trunks and grab a surfboard and ride the waves. You will love the wines as they are delicious beyond compare. Really...I enjoyed the time at Longboard and will cruise on back in there as soon as I get the chance. Off the main town of Healdsburg this tasting room is both fun and has fun wines. Mark C . and I are huge fans and when I found out we could visit it was on must try list. The winery has a laid back surfer vibe and those that find it have to seek it out or happen upon it. In either case you will not be disappointed in your experience. Loved their late harvest semillion which we have had trouble finding back east, their Cab, and Sav blanc, all of which will be consumed on our trip or shipped back home. I've been to Longboard so many times I can't remember now, we have to hit it up every time we are in the area. Contrary to some recent poor reviews the service at Longboard has been nothing short of fantastic. Staff is very knowledgeable and very personable. Love longboard so much I've liked it on Facebook and try to make as many events that they hosts. Sadly like facebook there is no dislike button for yelp when you find reviews that are poorly written or take a single sided approach. I was super stoked that we were able to find another place to finish up wine tasting for my gf's 30th b-day after being turned away from a few places close to closing time. We had a pretty large group of close to 20 people and I bet we scared the hell out of the girl that worked there when we all rolled in. Most of the folks had already had a long day so they did not partake in tasting. Maybe less than half of our group actually tasted so it was not that bad. Regardless the woman working there (Nessia) was no where near nice to us. Several of us came to the counter excited to try out some new wine but it took several minutes for her to even look at us (there were all of 3-4 people in the place prior). When she did she rudely slapped the tasting menus down when we asked how much tastings were. I took it in stride because we were having such a wonderful day but she kept on rolling with her mood and her horrible service. I know I would be irritated if a bunch of people rolled in right before I was about to close and go enjoy my Saturday night but hey we were having a good time and most likely would have purchased several bottles of wine which I am sure her employer would have liked and if she made any commission then a double whammy, but no. We had partaken in a few tastings when of course her lack of attention had assumed we had tried all of our wines. She argued with my friend (potential customer) about pouring his tasting. He left without even finishing half of his tasting and Longboard lost out on a bottle or two. To add we were trying to find all of our friends so I received a call. Instead of asking me politely to discuss this outside or some other method she basically snapped and told me that I was being rude and kept yelling at me to stop yelling/talking on the phone. its too bad. I wanted to enjoy the place as I do with every new winery I try. I did not even get to enjoy the wine as I was irritated the whole time. Maybe if a friend or I see it somewhere I will give it another shot but I doubt we will be back to the LongBoard tasting room. read more

I stumbled upon this fantastic wine having lunch at Chinois. The owner pointed out that they had a tasting room just up the road in Healdsburg. This made me giddy. We went. I was blown away. It's got such a California vibe, with killer wine. I fell in love with wine all over again. I found out that the winemaker was formerly from J. I said that I was going to marry him. Anyway....I Have been to Longboard MANY Times and have been served by Nessia as well. She has always greeted with a smile and wonderful personality that she normally does! I went to Longboard's tasting room on a recent wine trip to Sonoma County. My girlfriend, who is a sommelier at a restaurant in NY, and I had a week of tastings planned throughout the Russian River Valley. We went to Longboard on the first day of our trip and arrived there late afternoon, The place was great! The bar is a surfboard, widescreen TV playing surf movies, just a great vibe vs some of the snobbier tasting rooms we had visited. We had a great tasting with Nessia, she's very knowledgeable about their wines, the winemaking process and the region in a whole. She recommended a great restaurant nearby where we had a fantastic dinner. I joined the wine club that day, bought a magnum of the Pinot, and was lucky to get the bottle signed by the winemaker, Oded! During the rest of our week in Sonoma we returned to Longboard two more times, it is a great place to relax and drink some very good wine. read more

Wine, Waves and Soul are the mantra at Longboard! Heed the call! Lol...located about 2 blocks East of the Healdsburg plaza on Fitch Street sits this fun and delicious winery. The character who owns the place is named 'Oded' and he is a character...surfer and winemaker extraordinaire with a storied journey landing him with Longboard. A cool, fun and hip tasting room with no fake pretense or attitude! I dig the Syrahs and if you do too...this is the place. The Malbec and Chardonnay rocks too! Surf on in and groove to the waves of fun, Great wines and cool people who have a passion for working here...we really had fun with Jody and Sean as toastmasters during our most recent visit. Longboard deserves three stars just for their late harvest semillion alone. I wasn't such a fun of their other wines, but this one was really amazing. Longboard Vineyards is my go-to for Syrah. I love all the longboards hanging from the ceiling, and the TV with big wave surfing videos in the tasting room. Her husband had found a bottle in NYC and they loved it. Couldn't find it again anywhere. The lovey woman behind the bar was most kind and informative. The winemaker himself came in and Pat told her the story about drinking his wine for their anniversary out East....he had her come behind the bar and I took a photo. Very gracious man. There were quite a few people there and everyone was having a great time. We had to buy Longboard sweatshirt, hat, and t shirts! And WINE. The wines were only so-so, nothing special. The tasting fee was steep for how out-of-the-way and blah their wines were.... The reds were decent if you like reds but their one white was terrible. We were ignored for a more "sure-fire" sale but when they left the server attempted to be more attentive. The story of the wines and surfing were really interesting but they were told to the people we were being ignored for so we only caught snippets. read more

Boyfriend, boyfriend's family, and I came here as our first stop on the Wine Road barrel tasting this past weekend. The tasting room is cute, with lots of different longboards on the ceiling and on the walls, and there is a tv showing the winemaker surfing on the far wall. The staff there is very friendly (from the 10 seconds they spoke with us). The wines were okay... although I've tasted better. Overall, cute place, creative theme (and ya'll know I love the tropical theme/anything beach related). I'd like to come back sometime to have a real tasting, but until then they get an A-OK from me. read more

Nothing in particular stood out - the service was okay, we had a Groupon for a tasting which made the prices a bonus, and there was maybe one or two wines out of the set menu that I truly enjoyed. The menu lacks diversity and included a brut rose, sauv blanc, a Malbec, and two syrah. We were interested in trying some other options outside the tasting menu but it's not offered. Just purchased a wine tasting at Longboard, we are a group of four. The place is really nice & the wine quality is good. The service was really bad. The person helping us was attentive, she had a really bad attitude. I overheard her complaining about work dynamics, which is totally fine but don't project your worries on to us. This was our first time visiting from San Francisco. Felt like she was rushing us between servings. When we were chatting & had wine in our glass, she would stare at us with the bottle. Super uncomfortable. Should point out that there wasn't very many people in the place. We would ask her to come back when we were done & of course she gave us attitude. Bottom line we didn't feel comfortable or welcomed at all. read more

Still a 5 star experience! We were in the Healdsburg area for an event on 05/28/2011, Memorial Day weekend, and afterwards decided to stop in at Longboard for a tasting. We had a friend with us and her two little girls and of course our 4 legged kids were with us too. Nessia greeted us with a warm welcome on a cold rainy day. Our friend doesn't drink as much as we do, and I have learned not to try to keep up with the big boys. So it was great that Nessia was able to remember where each of us were at on the tasting list since all three us were on different wines. We were able to take our time and socialize. The little girls are pretty well behaved in general but it's awesome that Longboard has a basket of games, books, crayons, toys, etc. readily available for the kids. Gotta love that they are family friendly too. The ENTIRE family is always well taken care at Longboard! read more

Longboard is my favorite winery! 2 reasons ... the staff is incredible, and the wine is outstanding. The surf vibe is perfect for northern cal. My wife and I have been stopping in for over 5 years, done some events, and always consider it a highlight of our visit to Healdsburg (we live in Petaluma). Thank God for the Yelp/Facebook link so you can tell all your FB family and friends about how customer service at Longboard was SO BAD that it completely overshadowed any merit the wine could've had. I've never encountered someone who hated her day/life/job/situation as much as Nessia Flugger, the lady pouring our wines. OK, maybe she just hated US, but is that really how you treat customers who could've potentially purchased many bottles of wine? She was visibly upset and didn't seem to handle big groups very well. There were a lot of us, but she treated us as if she wanted us to get the hell out of there! She said we should've called beforehand, even if it was 5 minutes ahead of time. I'm not sure how much she could have changed her attitude in those five minutes because she obviously thought she was far too good to be pouring wine for any of us? Maybe I would've understood her frustration if it were crowded, but there were like 3 other people there. Maybe she gets grouchy at the end of her shift, but honestly, if you want customers to come back, you can't treat them like shit. She cards us and finds out that only 6 of us (a third of our large group) were wine tasting. You'd expect her to calm down a little, right? NO. She speeds through the description of each wine and almost tore a shirt grabbing it off the rack wall for another customer. She got into debate with one of our friends over how much wine she poured; he didn't taste all the wines, but she insisted she poured everything for him. REALLY? You're gonna argue with a customer over a couple more tastings? So in an effort to be nice and quickly alleviate the tension everyone was feeling from her arrogance, I ask, "So, what kind of connection is there between the wine and the Hawaiian/surfing theme? Is the wine brewed in Hawaii or something?" Nessia snaps back, "First of all, wine is fermented and NOT brewed. Beer is brewed. Second of all, it's illegal to ferment in Hawaii and serve in California (or she said something similar to that). And it is not a Hawaiian theme. A longboard is a type of surfing board; it's a SURFING theme." Keep in mind the title on her business card says, "Surf Lounge Wahine." All this time I thought "wahine" was hawaiian for lady/woman/female. But that day I learned "wahine" is SURF for "woman with longboard up her ass" read more
