I've had an incredibly hard time with the staff here. I had over four thousand dollars of work done here. Not to mention the owner (Pepe) had my vehicle for over two weeks then calls me one day asking me to pay the full amount in advance without any confirmation of whether the vehicle would be ready soon. (I have been to plenty of auto shops throughout the years and I have NEVER been asked to pay before the work is complete). Also, I never received a receipt on all the work and every time I call they say they are going to send it but instead you have to track them down to receive it. Update; they finally sent me a receipt but it has the completely wrong vehicle information.. and the issue I brought the vehicle in for was never fixed. So, that's 4k I could've spent else where or on a new car!!! They saved me having to tow my car somewhere, and replaced my starter for a more competitive price, and replaced my battery with no installation cost. They got it all done in a day. I've been to Longhorn Automotive twice for oil changes, inspections, and tire and mechanical issues and both times they've been friendly, fast, and knowledgeable. The costs are on par with other good repair shops in town. The reception area isn't air conditioned, but it's cool enough in there. I'm not there for the ambiance, anyway. Pepe rules! I got this huge estimate from my dealership. I found Longhorn Auto, I gave them the dealer's inflated estimate, and Pepe was like, "I can do that stuff for much less." Not only did he do everything on the checklist, but he also cleaned my break's and rotors for free. I got extra services for under half my dealer's estimate. This is my new routine. I've taken my car to Longhorn Automotive twice and had excellent service and value both times. The first time was for a "simple" headlamp replacement. I thought it would be simple. Bought the lamps at AutoZone, lifted the hood, couldn't figure out how to reach the lamp, searched the internet. It turns out, for my car, one is expected to remove the front bumper in order to change the light bulbs in front. What?!?! That's certainly what the dealer (and any shop that works from dealer cost lists) would do, probably for $1000+. I entrusted it to Pepe at Longhorn and his mechanics and after some digging in, his mechanic successfully changed the bulb. Total charge, less than $40. Later I brought my car to them with a (written) list of about nine different items to fix/address, including a front end alignment, a water/coolant leak and an oil leak. They found the problems and fixed them and did the other work requested all at a very reasonable price. After the alignment the car still had alignment symptoms. I knew I needed new tires and they were next on the list. I discussed the continuing symptoms with Pepe and he was very helpful and not at all defensive. I was very impressed by his professional handling of my concern. At first he encouraged me to bring the car back for a test drive with him, but after being reminded of the condition of the tires, we both agreed it would be best for me to replace them as planned and then revisit the issue. Anyway, after getting new tires, the alignment was fine. They did a great job, the old tires were causing the problem. The point here is that Pepe was very receptive to listening to the issue and helpful about resolving any possible problem. I really appreciate that. read more

What a nice little shop! I ended up here by chance after car battery trouble took me to AutoZone and they sent me to Longhorn Automotive. I got there mid-afternoon with my battery freshly purchased down the street and was able to walk in with no appointment and have the battery installed. The guys working in the bays were super friendly and got the job done before I could even finish my conversation with an employee in the office--it was super impressive. The shop is pretty humble in terms of amenities, but that won't matter because the mechanics here are so quick you'll barely have time to sit down or consider a cup of coffee. All-in-all, very pleased to have stumbled upon this little gem and will be back for future auto needs. read more

I took a chance on this shop and regret it. My hood latch stopped working, so I asked them to fix it, along with a few other things. When I came back, they told me that all I had to do was push down hard on the hood to close it. When I inspected the hood later, there were about 8-10 hand sized dents on the front of the hood. They later claimed that they didn't do it, that it was your-word vs my-word situation, and that there's no way they could have dented the hood because it's steel. Also that they couldn't fix it without ordering parts, so they had to force the hood closed. I confirmed with a couple PDR shops that you are not supposed to push down on the hood to close it because it's easy to dent. Later that week I found another mechanic who fixed it with a 50 cent bolt and half-hour of labor. Pepe and Longhorn are shade-tree mechanics. I wouldn't trust them for anything more complex than an oil change or tire rotation, because they don't know what they're doing. read more

I got service of my old 14 elantra here many years. Longhorn automotive is a nice local mechanic with reasonable repair cost in Austin. They replace the broken window, coolant hose in my car. Further, they help to put skid plate on the bottom (well, I bring plate and ask him to install it). Mechanic is fully open space and you can see whats going on in your car. Well, you can ask them repair your car with your own part I guess. Whether I don't know you like this type of mechanic or not, but I love like this longhorn mech (well circumstance is not very neat and clean, but you understand this job with oils and dirty part..) and recommend you to visit and look. I went in to see these amazing people earlier this year for an oil change that was absolutely fast and painless. So this week when my car started making a new weird rattling noise, Longhorn Automotive was my first choice. (Doesn't that rattle always start right in the middle of alllllll the other things you have to get done?! Groceries, getting to work, mom's birthday, all the things.) I reached out to see how busy they were and they got me in so fast! I got there at 3 and Jose "Pepe" Sandoval had a look right away. He got it diagnosed and had a plan, so I left the car there with plans to come back the next morning. AND THEN I got a text like 2 hours later AND THE CAR WAS READY!!! I chose this place because it is right next to my apartment building and me and my wife and a couple of neighbors have wanted to get our car serviced so they picked me to be the guinea pig. I walk in and the manager is extremely friendly and the place is clean so that is a great start. After I stated three things that I needed to be looked at and quoted the manager then asked for the payment for one service to be paid in full without completing the other two services as if it is a pay as you go establishment. I find that extremely offensive and unorthodox for a business practice. He made the excuse that they would like to keep their cost low. Again that makes no sense and if they believe that their customers can't afford services then why be open at all? It wasn't as if he even quoted me first for all 3 services; merely went right into payment of one (which wasn't alot) even though the job wasn't even completed. Since it made me feel extremely uncomfortable I paid the amount once the first job was completed and decided to take my business elsewhere due to their unusual business practice. It is just inconvenient for anyone to pay before a job is completed. On top of that when I returned to pick up my vehicle they misdiagnosed the other two issues (AC and shock issues). Makes me believe that they didn't fully do a sufficient job on the one repair they charged me for. So I would recommend if you have just a small easy job you want done quickly then go here but anything more than two things needed for your vehicle go somewhere else. read more

Longhorn Automotive My wife and I spent years finding a reliable automotive mechanic. For more than twenty five years, we were customers of Gene Johnson Automotive here in Austin, Texas. They are genuine, honest mechanics. They always did an excellent job. The Hyundai we own is a fantastic car. Part of the regular maintenance is periodic replacement of the timing belt. We know fellow owners of Hyundai cars that procrastinated getting theirs replaced, and experienced catastrophic engine failure. Gene Johnson Automotive had replaced our timing belt, but it took five working days because they are always booked up. That's what happens when you are awesome. We also had to pay for cab fare for going to work each day and then pick up our car. My wife took our beloved car to get it inspected at Terry's Inspection Station. (They also do honest services). As she waited for Terry's to open, a gentleman who owned the mechanic service next door asked if there was something he and his business could do to help her. She gave them a try. They replaced the belts, changed the oil, did the inspection, sent her pictures for her smart phone of the work being done and, delivered the car back to her in ONE DAY! Longhorn Automotive was super professional, friendly and responsive to every question. They did a great job! Really great experience! I've been putting off a repair for awhile because dealing with auto shops can be frustrating. Longhorn gave me a rough estimate over the phone; after looking at the car and confirming the cost, he adjusted to honor the rate he gave me on the phone. Not only that - he sent me photos during the repair so I knew my car was taken care of and how long it would be until it was ready. My Check Engine light started flashing on an already-crummy day, so I pulled into AutoZone for a diagnosis. After getting the codes, the guys there recommended Longhorn, just down the street. I pulled in around 3 PM, and Pepe greeted me with a smile and a wave from inside one of the bays. He quickly came over to talk through and check out the problem. I was amazed when he said he might have it done by end of day, next late morning latest. When I said I might wait to see if he had it done today, just in case, he thought a minute and then said he'd get it done for me. I was floored yet again and so grateful. True to his word, two hours later, he came over to the Fly-Rite to collect me and give me my keys. The price was fair, and Pepe showed me pictures of my worn-out parts. I was glad to pay for such wonderful service and work, and I was happy to be supporting a family business. Pepe saved my sanity today by fixing my car, and I'm grateful. For a couple of days I'd been getting a CHECK EMISSIONS SYSTEM warning on my 2012 Honda Civic, 60k miles. I investigated fixes online and tried "tightening the gas cap" fix, but warning screen kept coming up. This morning I had an errand to run and I could tell it was running differently, just didn't feel right. Took it to a Auto Zone & they ran the code to fine three P145C Evaporative Emission System Purge Flow Malfunction listed. He suggested I get it fixed within a week or so and mentioned Longhorn Automotive because I asked him for recomendations.I went to the parking lot & checked them out on yelp. Yay! Good reviews, lots of 5 stars. I headed straight there. I was quickly and warmly greeted by Pepe Sandoval and a co-worker. They checked my car out with their code reader which affirmed the P145C EES malfunciton. Pepe recommended I get a certified Honda part because other off brand parts are problematic, I agreed. His estimate was below what I was expecting. He even showed me the part, one of which he had in the office, plus a diagram to help explain the repair. I know other people that have had similar repairs and they paid quite a bit more. I agreed to the price and Pepe told me it'd take about 4 hours. When he called to say it was ready It was one hour earlier than his estimated time! When I picked up my car, Pepe also showed me photographs of the repair. I feel like Pepe's Longhorn Automotive is competent & reasonable, plus they're really nice. It's probably the least stressful "surprise auto repair" incident I've ever had.
