I'm honestly amazed by the honesty I experienced from Danny today. I came in for an oil change, and he immediately made it clear that the oil they had--while very high quality--was not the correct spec for my specific car. He took the time to educate me about exactly what my vehicle requires, which turns out is only available through local dealerships or online. Ironically, when I called the dealerships, most of them either blew off my questions, deflected, or didn't even know what I was talking about. One dealership even transferred me to a dead line when I tried to verify what Danny had told me. Turns out, some of them are using lesser-quality oil than what's actually recommended in the owner's manual--and they're the dealerships. This industry can be incredibly shady, but Danny gave me straight truth from the second I walked in. I love these guys!!! As a new Austinite, I came here to get my vehicle inspected so I could get a Texas license plate. I chose 766 simply because they were (1) close and (2) open to walk-ins. I was pleasantly surprised by how helpful and polite they were, how quickly they did the work, and how little they charged. Just days later, my daughter asked me to get her car inspected. Naturally, I went to 766. Once again, the process was quick, easy, and inexpensive. Finally, I took my daughter's other car in for an oil change and an inspection. The car failed the inspection, but they explained very clearly why it failed and how to fix the problem. The battery had died recently, which zeroed out the sensors; it has to be driven 150-250 miles, then taken in again. And they said they'll do the reinspection for free. Yet again, the service was outstanding, the wait was short, and the price was right. read more

My radiator was toast so I came in here cause it was close to my place and could handle a refill with water before me stopping again. Diagnostic fee was $135. I did need to replace the radiator for an old Honda Civic so it ended up being $1000 total. They did have time to do it and I could pick it up the next day (I was in a hurry to drive out of town that weekend so that was appreciated). Called another shop, Buddha's Garage and they didn't need a diagnostic run, and total would have come out to ~$700 total. However, they were booked for a few days. I'd definitely come back here and pay the premium for time but I'd try Buddha's first if you have time. They were great on the phone and super helpful about what part I needed before I even walked in the door. read more

I've taken my car in for all kinds of things ranging from a simple oil change to full service (spark plug replacement, spark plug coil replacements, and CO2 sensor replacements) and always get the absolute best service. The owner also recently updated the shop to include an indoor waiting area WITH AIR CONDITIONING! It's awesome. I think this mechanic shop may be good for things like oil and tire changes. The last two times I took my car to this auto shop for repairs because of engine check light, after I was called that the car was fixed and paid much for the repairs, I barely drove 5mins and have the check lights on again both times. When I called about the issue, the mechanic that picked the call said that there could be a million reason the light came back on, that just sound ridiculous, considering I just paid for repairs to get the check engine light fixed. I went there the second time for check light just to confirm the first was not a concidence. I am prstty sure someone does not know what they doing except just turning check engine light off. I gave two stars because they seen to work promptly, but not quality! read more

Took my friend's car here one morning for an oil change. DUE TO THEIR MISTAKES, MY FRIENDS ENGINE IS LOCKED UP AND THEY WONT HELP FIX IT. They used the wrong oil filter which popped off later that day, leaking out all of the oil. The engine locked up in the middle of north Lamar later that day and we had to tow it to Lambs auto. Lambs inspected the car and determined it now needs a new engine. The owner of Youniversal auto didn't treat the issue like it was urgent at all and denies that it was his fault. He refuses to pay for the repairs. We had to cancel our trip we were planning and we are not out a car. All because they couldn't do an oil change correctly. read more

I've been going here for a couple years for oil changes, state inspections, etc. Once they took the tires off my wife's car to see if there was a brake issue, and they didn't charge me for it. They've never tried to upsell me or anything else shady. I'm really glad to have a "neighborhood mechanic" for the basics and light diagnostic. Almost don't want to tell you about them because there's rarely a wait when I've gone in, and how nice is that? Also, and I think this is praiseworthy, they seem to be taking social distancing seriously. They have an outdoor waiting room, they are willing to ask people to back up when they crowd the service desk, and the service techs wear masks. read more

This is a bit belated and refers back to work we had done a year ago or so. After having several great experiences with this outfit and rating them 5 stars, the next experience proved negative. We needed a part and the financial timing was difficult. So cost was important. I told the young man this --and he assured me that I would find no better price (It seems the part was around $300). However after I called around, I found his quote was a full $100 over other area mechanics. He made some excuses for his "misquote" And he did back off on the price. Which I appreciated since the car had been towed there and it would have cost a great deal to move the vehicle. However, trust is hard to earn and easier to lose. I came to get my car inspected. I was really nervous since this was only my second time getting an inspection (not a Texas native) and my car is nearly 20 years old. Last year I went elsewhere and they violated my trust majorly by checking my levels incorrectly and putting the wrong transmission fluid in my car even after I told them it was the wrong fluid and I didn't need it. My car has some quirks. I don't want anyone besides my mechanic (my dad) to touch, check or even look at anything under my hood and I always explain that when getting a flat fixed, etc... So far, Youniversal is the the first place to respect my wishes and not poke around under my hood trying to find something I didn't ask them to look for. I was bracing for a major problem (e.g., too much oil, which can destroy an engine) and worried it would cost me hundreds - if not thousands - to get it fixed. These guys diagnosed the problem, made a quick fix, and sent me on my way. If they told me I owed them a couple hundred bucks, I would have paid it. But they didn't take advantage of my vulnerability. These are good, honest people and we are luck to have them in the neighborhood. Youniversal Auto Care has my business for life! read more

This is an east side gem! I have half a screw stuck in my bumper with a crooked Cali plate for nearly a year because no body shop was able to melt it out. A neighboring shop quoted me $100 and i stormed out. When i stumbled into Youniversal, I was greeted with a smile even though it was after closing. I explained the issue and without hesitation I was told to come back first thing Saturday. Well, Saturday came, I went and only an hour later my car was fixed! He melted out the screw and properly attached my Texas plates. The catch??!!! He totally paid it forward and didn't even charge me. The owner and workers are very friendly and helpful. I write this review after taking my car to Youniversal on 4-5 different occasions for several different reasons. First off, if you just need an oil change then there's no issue. They're quick and fair, and I never had any problems with that. However, after taking my car into this shop for several oil changes and thinking that I had found a shop that I liked and could trust I decided to take the car in for more extensive preemptive work. I needed to replace the spark plugs, check the brakes, replace the timing belt, etc. My car had over 100k miles and it was time for a big check up. I gave them a detailed list of all of the things that I wanted to do and wanted check on so that they could go in and assess what needed to be done. They came back with a list that was similar to what I requested. Since none of the work was needed ASAP I told them I needed my car by the end of the week (dropping off on a Monday) and that if that was a problem then I could wait until the next week. They said, "no problem", however, it ended up taking much longer than they thought and causing me to scramble to find rides when I had guests in town (PROBLEM 1). I finally picked it up, and was told that they had done all the work outlined. At this point they told me that I didn't need to replace the water pump even though they had gone in and replaced the timing belt (right next to the water pump). Upon getting home and reviewing the invoice, I realized that they had not replaced the spark plugs (PROBLEM 2). Therefore, I knew I had to take it back in for that reason. I put this off since I was close to getting another oil change, and due to the fact that they'd had my car for longer than anticipated, I wanted to team it up with another bit of work that had to happen. I took it in about a month later for the spark plugs and oil change. When I went to pick it up they then informed me that my water pump was leaking and that I should be careful driving on it before having that replaced (I had a road trip planned that got cancelled because of this). Never mind the fact that they had just had my car and the instructions to replace it if needed since they were already getting in that far to replace the timing belt (PROBLEM 3). At this point I decided that I needed to get a second opinion because I'd lost trust in their work. I took my car to another shop explaining to them that Youniversal had replaced the timing belt, but not the water pump and that they were now saying that it needed placement. The mechanics at the second place were incredulous with the fact that Youniversal spent all the time to replace the timing belt and didn't recommend replacing the water pump since it's such a labor intensive task. They told me I should demand a discount for that work from Youniversal, but I told them I had lost trust and asked them to just move forward with replacing the water pump. A few days later I received a call from the mechanic at the second shop working on my car saying that try as he might, that he couldn't get the water pump leak. He didn't charge me, and now I've found a trustworthy mechanic. It's sad because initially I liked this shop and wanted to give them my business, but they ruined what trust I had with them. I wouldn't recommend doing any extensive work here past an oil change. read more

Went here to get some quick work done and noticed some strange noises when going over 60mph. I ended up going to another shop and come to find out my brake caliper on was loose. Apparently they replaced a bolt with one with the wrong thread count and just shoved it in like idiots distorting the thread now I have to get completely new one put in. This auto shop is very responsible and has great service with the customer first in mind. I went there to have my oil changed and was greeted very warmly, and only had to wait a total of 15 minutes. After the service was completed, nobody tried to upsell me ANYTHING! I almost couldn't believe my ears, especially after going to Firestone for several years where they always try to sell me their entire shop. I will always take my car to this place when I need anything done, because I believe that they are trustworthy and that they do great work. They have been in business for nine years as an independent shop, and there is a good reason for that! You can trust this place over Firestone or the like any day. read more

I'm a huge proponent of supporting locally owned businesses. However, your money is best spent at Jiffy Lube or some place that does only oil changes. Even though most of the reviews were negative, I went against the grain and made the worst decision ever to take my GMC Terrain here for an oil change. First, I had my dogs with me. I couldn't be in the car with them so I had to take them out. Granted I was able to chill in their lobby with them, I felt super uncomfortable. Then in the lobby, they have this green shag rug. As soon as my dogs stepped in it, ants dispersed everywhere. There were hundreds. I was so grossed out. I couldn't even believe it. The cherry on top was it cost me $72.00 (with a 10% off coupon!!) for a regular oil change. The chick was up selling me for sure, but kept telling me if I wanted the regular oil, I'd have to "sign off on it." WTH? I'll give y'all something to sign off on and that's the fact I'll never be back here to use that stupid punch card you gave me. I was bamboozled and swindled in the worst way possible. I want to like Youniversal more than I really do, so I hype them to myself. I needed a tire patched and an oil change. I absolutely despise the dealership for my car, so I avoid them at all costs. I found Youniversal on Yelp and gave them a call. They were friendly and assured me they could get the job done. They did just that, and let me know my air filter (that is a special model) should be replaced; they put an order in with the dealer and had me come back the next day to have it replaced. They were accommodating and easy to work with, which is probably what a lot of their good reviews are attributed to. My only gripe with Youniversal is that they still have the auto-care sales pitch. "Change your oil every 3,000 miles or else!" "Look at these 'dirty' engines that didn't have proper 70k mile maintenance!" "We can sell you cheaper used tires than anywhere else in the world!" No, thank you. I'll continue changing my oil based on the manufacturer recommended 8,000 miles (synthetic), performing engine maintenance as needed (preventative, yes, but not paranoid) and buying new tires that I can rely on. So yeah, if you're going to hit up Youniversal, just beware the salesman pitches and don't get suckered. read more

Should have read the reviews more carefully before taking my El Camino here. I totally agree with other peoples comments about the shop trying to upsale everything. Took the car in to get ac fixed. The vehicle sat in the shop for 4 days until "the ac mechanic" was able to get to it. They charged it with refrigerant and told me it was ready. Went to pick it up and the AC wasn't even working when I turned on the car! I walked back inside and told them it wasn't working. The girl told me i would need to bring it back in but the AC guy wouldn't be able to get to it for a few days. I considered taking it somewhere else but thought I would get a break since they already started the work there. Before taking it back in to let them work on it I specifically asked if I would be charged again to have the ac system charged in case they couldn't fix the problem. I was laughed at and told that of course they could fix the problem and no there would not be an additional charge. So I took it back it sat in the shop for several more days again until they had time to pull the dash after which they called and said they would need to find a part and would call once they found it so I could bring it back in again. Several weeks went by with no call, so I started following up with messages. Again no response on the AC part. Finally went to the shop in person and was told they still couldn't find the part and if they could it would be expensive. What the hell kind of answer is that? How do you know it would be too expensive if you can't even find it! Iv'e already spent $1000 bucks trouble shooting the damn thing and it still doesn't work! Then she had the nerve to tell me if they couldn't find the part there would be no refund issue for the $$ I've already spent trying to get the AC fixed! I've been here a couple of times on a recommendation of a friend...I must say I finally feel like I'm being treated like a human being while getting my car serviced. Searching for a mechanic is by far (for me at least) one of the most difficult tasks I've ever encountered. You always feel like the people behind the counter and the mechanics are out to empty your wallet...but not at Youniversal. The staff is super friendly and never pressure you into getting more than what needs to be done. And at rock bottom prices too. I've gotten oil changes, my a\c fixed, my check engine and ABS light looked at. I've never spent more than 30 min to an hour waiting (although I'm sure more intense jobs take longer) but they have a nice air conditioned waiting room with a TV and free coffee. When you pull up they come out to greet you and keep you informed throughout the process. They even windex your windows...nice touch. Although car problems are something we all dread, it's also inevitable... I'm just happy that I've now found a place I can trust. Boy does that AC feel good!!! -X read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. WASTE OF MONEY. WASTE OF TIME. My car was making a noise when I turned....a clicking sound that had me worried. I am driving 1100 miles today so thought I needed to make sure it is safe. I took my Acura SUV to Youniversal Auto Care two weeks ago, test drove it with them, they heard the sound and said they would fix it. 3 days and $650 dollars later, they told me they replaced the "tie-rod ends" and that it was fixed. I pick up my car only to find the EXACT same sound as I am driving out of their shop, PLUS NOW MY FRONT END SHIMMIES WHEN I SLOW DOWN!!! They tell me to bring it back a few days later. I do then they tell me it was an oversight, that what I really need is a new "rack and pinion assembly". Well that cost me another $650.00 dollars and three days without my car. I pick up my car last night only to find that as I am two blocks away I RUN OUT OF GAS!!!! They had run my gas ( I left it with more than 1/4 tank) to "Zero miles left" to empty. THE CLICKING IS THE EXACT SAME!!!! AND THE FRONT END SHIMMIES TERRIBLY WHEN I BRAKE OR SLOW DOWN. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

Looking for a new mechanic is a very intimidating proposition. Being somewhat new to Austin and starting to have some car troubles I needed one quick. They needed to be affordable, honest and patient with the fact that I didn't know much about cars. A friend recommended Youniversal Auto Care and I'm glad he did. Johnny and his staff at Youniversal Auto Care were friendly, inexpensive and didn't try to sell me things I didn't need. I went in thinking I was in need of a lot of expensive repairs and left knowing that it was actually something quite simple and that I'd found my new mechanic. I used this shop at the recommendation of someone who had a great oil change experience here. I found the staff friendly and was hopeful when dropping my car off that I had found a nice local mom and pop shop to use as my longtime mechanic. The reason I took my 2006 Chevy Aveo in was because I was experiencing a loud metal rubbing sound coming from the front passenger side tire. Youniversal diagnosed it and said I needed new brake pads, new rotors, and new wheel bearings. Nearly $700 later, I got my car back. Two weeks into driving it, the brakes started squeaking a lot. I had to travel out of town, so another week passed. I got home, drove it once more, and I was shocked to discover a lot of noise and poor handling coming from the front tires again. It sounded worse than when I'd originally taken the car in for work. I dropped the car off at Youniversal over the weekend when they were closed, left a detailed note and a voicemail with the shop, and waited for a call back from them, hoping they would honor their recent work and take care of all of this with no additional charge. I was told that the hub enclosure was now what needed to be replaced. It was working so poorly that it wasn't holding the new bearings in place properly, and that was the reason for all the noise and poor handling. Hmmm... I wondered why the mechanic didn't just replace this to begin with a few weeks ago. The mechanic said it wasn't in bad shape at that point, so he didn't think it needed to be replaced. Originally, the shop offered to only slightly discount my labor this second time around and have me pay the price difference between the hub enclosure and the bearings. This was going to cost me a good chunk of money again a little over three weeks after having them do repair work on the same area of my car. However, after reading the Yelp review I posted earlier today that explained the problems I was having, how I was unsatisfied with the service, and that I'd likely never return, the owner offered to cover the labor entirely. I believe they might even be changing their policy on not warrantying their labor in any capacity (which it currently states on their invoices) to warrantying labor for 30 days. Definitely boosting some confidence in customers if you're willing to say that you stand behind your work. All in all, at this point I'm thrilled to say that this shop is one that cares about its customers and is not afraid to right a wrong when someone is unsatisfied. One word for this garage, incomplete. I took my 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 truck in to 766 auto for what seemed to be a minor issue. The check engine light had come on and was missing occasionally. The mechanic hooked it up to the sensor reader and said it was the 4th coil and they could have it in and out by the end of the day. I called back towards the end of the day and the tech said they had run into some issues. So, I told him after being billed $467 that I wanted to take it to my favorite shop who's name rhymes with Duke. When they pulled it out of the shop it was making some horrendous noise and missing like mad. I told the tech it was not making that noise when I brought it in. He said it started making the noise after they put new spark plugs in it. He said they would look further into the matter and call me back. They never called so when I called them, they told me they would have to send the engine off to a machine shop and it would take 4 weeks minimum. I reluctantly paid $1,250 as a 50% deposit. 6 weeks later I still didn't have my truck so I went in there and insisted they put my engine back in. Once that was done I called a tow truck company and had them tow it to my favorite shop who's name rhymes with Duke. The tow truck driver was familiar with the shop but knew it by another name (Universal). He'd had other customers use his service to tow vehicles from there. Once my truck was dropped off last Friday the mechanic called me to find out what was going on I explained as best I could. He called today and told me two of the spark plug wires weren't connected properly. I needed a new PCV valve and he recommended I replace my front and back brakes for a grand total of $1,292 and my truck is ready to be picked up 3 days later. This is a long cautionary tale but if you should read this, my advice is never take your vehicle to 766 auto for anything other than a quick oil change or inspection check. read more
