Had such a great dining experience at Lōrea inside Pasea Hotel & Spa! Let me start by saying the food was SO delicious overall. Now, for full honesty, the starters weren't the star of the show for me. We ordered the pork belly wraps and spicy pork gyoza. Both were cooked well, but in my opinion, they were missing that extra "something" maybe a dipping sauce or a bit more flavor to really elevate them. Next time, I'd probably skip those and try different appetizers. The service was great from start to finish attentive, friendly, and everything came out smoothly. The restaurant itself is super cute, and I loved both the indoor and outdoor seating options. We sat outside under the heaters, which made for such a cozy, perfect vibe. BUT the mains and sides? That's where they absolutely delivered. I had the Korean BBQ salmon and WOW flavor on flavor on flavor. Easily one of my favorites of the night. For the table, we shared lobster mac and cheese, asparagus, and whipped potatoes, and let me tell you... those sides were everything. The portions are generous (perfect for sharing with 4-6 people), the mac and cheese was rich and creamy, the asparagus was cooked perfectly, and the whipped potatoes? Smooth, fluffy, and packed with flavor, definitely a standout. We were originally hoping for the tomahawk steak, but they had run out (sad moment ). However, they made it right by offering a prime New York steak for two and honestly, no regrets because that steak was FIRE. Super flavorful, juicy, and absolutely mouthwatering. We also tried the Wagyu and sea bass, which were both delicious, but the real highlights for me were the steak and salmon. Drinks were also on point! We had an Old Fashioned, Moscow Mule, and a few lemon drops including blackberry, passionfruit, and watermelon. The blackberry lemon drop was hands down my favorite, so good! To top it all off, they brought out the cutest birthday macaroons! One tasted like Fruity Pebbles (so fun!) and the other was paired with whipped cream and raspberries such a sweet touch. Overall, while the appetizers didn't quite hit for me, the mains and sides absolutely carried the experience and are 100% the reason I'll be back. I spent over a week researching and trying to find a special place to have a birthday lunch. Based on the menu, I picked this restaurant. It was very underwhelming, unfortunately. I called ahead of time and made a reservation and they knew it was for a special birthday. We did get a seat right against the glass overlooking the beach, which was very pretty and the restaurant is very pretty. But I guess it wouldn't have been that hard to get a table against the glass because there was only maybe three or four other table tables sat in the whole restaurant anyways. Our waitress came up to us and seemed nice and asked us if we wanted a drink but we literally hadn't even looked at the menu yet so I said I just need a minute to look and then she proceeded to not come back for about 15 to 20 minutes to take our drink order, which was disappointing. We waited so long before she came back that we went ahead and ordered the food and drinks at the same time because I didn't know when she would come back again. It took a long time to get the drinks. The drinks came about the same time that the food came. They only had a few specialty cocktail items available on the menu. I picked one. I did not like it, but that's not their fault. The food unfortunately was really bad. It all sounded really good, but I did not like it. The only thing that I liked was the salmon appetizer smoked salmon on a flatbread bread. The avocado toast had horrible bread, and the avocado on top tasted like spoiled avocado. And the fig and Barada, unfortunately was on the same bread that was absolutely horrible bread, and had no flavor on top. The rosemary french fries were good. I think the worst part of it though was the fact that the waitress that was waiting on us pretty much never showed up again. She wasn't even the one that brought us our food. And I had to wait probably 20 minutes for her to come back around when we were done eating and by that time I had just sent my card at the end of the table because I didn't want to wait for the check and then have to wait another 20 minutes for her to come back with that. We had a really good dining experience here for my wife's birthday celebration. My daughter, wife and I shared the spicy tuna crispy rice, Prime New York steak, grilled seabass and short rib fried rice. The spicy tuna was not what we were accustomed to but it was still tasty. The steak was cooked perfectly and came out really tasty especially with the chimichurri. The seabass with the Yuzu ginger broth was wetter than I like but still flavorful. My friend and I came for drinks and dinner, and even on a rainy night the ambiance was beautiful. The patio is a must, the ceiling-mounted heaters keep it warm without the usual clutter of heat lamps. We shared a bottle of wine, a soup for her, and a mushroom orecchiette for me. Unfortunately, the pasta was undercooked. Not al dente, just not cooked through. It was disappointing because the mushrooms and sauce were excellent, and they pour the sauce and soup in front of you which is a nice touch. It makes the dining experience feel more elevated. I rarely send dishes back, but this one wasn't edible. Our server, Shelby, was kind and professional and replaced it with the duck and goat cheese charcuterie at no charge. The level of service during breakfast seemed to fall short compared to dinner. A special shoutout bartender, Chris who not only crafted excellent cocktails but also provided fantastic service when we came just for drinks in the afternoon. Many angles/seatings of this resturant (more outdoor than indoor of course) directly look out into the beach and when we had our dinner at 7pm sunset time the view was stunning, palm trees ocean against backdrop of a orange purple red Patagonia-logo sunset made us paused here and there during our meal to just enjoy the view. Restaurant itself is clean, modern, and very spaceous. Food - We ordered kale salad (refreshing balanced out our meat dishes, slightly saucier than expected), duck/goat chacutterie (great visual and great taste), prime steak frittes (medium rare felt a bit more like medium but still delicious), whole market fish (seabass that day with squash and lemon, tasty and filling) and the infamous parker house rolls (HEAVEN w/ beewax butter edible candle dip). I see previous reviews complained about food being bland, but our meal was tasty so I'd chart it off under they're implementing long term improvements or it's just reviewers' own subjective differences. Service - Professional and friendly service, our server Erica always greeted us with a smile and randomly checked in on us as we dined to see if we were doing okay. Very attentive water refill frequency, when our server was busy other servers were helpful in stepping in (unlike some other places where they may have you wait for your server, understandable no harm no foul but this way just feels more collaborative and supportive). In the beginning we did wait a little for the host to appear on a not full house evening, but based on the behaviors we observed it felt more like they were all very busy and might be understaffed for the day, and not idling or negligent so we didn't mind it too much. As a bonus we went upstairs to Treehouse rooftop bar after for some drinks and the lantern rustic decor went very well with the sunset beach view! I had a fun time celebrating my bachelorette dinner at Lorea. Booking the reservation for a large party was seamless. Melissa was very helpful and responded quickly in answering all my questions via email. Luckily, I did not have to put a deposit or have a set prix-fixe menu since I had two last minute cancellations. If you book for parties of 12 or more, they require selection from their prix-fixe menus, which feature a three-course meal with chef-driven dishes. Love the ambiance, ocean front dining with amazing views and live entertainment. The restaurant is located at the Pasea Hotel & Spa. Valet parking is also cheaper than parking at the Pacific City parking lot. We paid $40 and my friend only paid $15 for valet. Staff were really nice and accommodated us on which tables we preferred to be seated. Cocktails were flavorful. I enjoyed my food, I ordered the campbell river salmon and a side of warm beets and whipped potatoes. We shared the winter burrata & toast, forgot to take a picture since it was really good. My friends also enjoyed their food, they ordered the whole market fish of the day which was the branzino, seared yellow fin tuna, black cod, fresh orecchiette pasta, and short rib fried rice. Portions were good, we had to take the rest home. It was not as busy on a Friday night, so it was easy to talk to everyone at the table. After dinner, we went to the treehouse upstairs for drinks. I wanted to like this place because the view and ambiance are great, but this experience warrants a low rating. This was especially disappointing given that we were part of a large party. I ordered the chicken and after a few bites noticed pink, bloody-looking juices and a pink bone. While I understand chicken bones can sometimes appear pink depending how it's cooked, the presence of red-tinged juices is a food safety concern. When we brought this to the staff's attention and explained we were uncomfortable continuing to eat it, the response was dismissive. We were told this was "normal" for their chicken rather than being offered an apology or an immediate replacement. The solution was finally offered to cook the same, already-eaten piece of chicken longer and they returned it to the table. That is not an acceptable or sanitary resolution, and it made the situation worse. Large parties already require more coordination, but that shouldn't mean lower service standards. Good views don't make up for poor service or how food safety concerns are handled. For a restaurant charging premium prices, this was unacceptable, which is why I would not recommend it. read more

Made reservations for a Wednesday afternoon (celebrating my birthday). We were tuning a little behind and we called on our way and they were gracious to move our reservation 15 min after the hour. We made it just in time. We took advantage of the last 30 min of the happy hr deals, pretty good. We had the three sushi rolls for 15 and the mint pesto burrata, with happy hour drinks. It was great! We were then seated and they let us decorate the table ;) our waiter was super friendly and did his best to make us feel special: got a glass of champagne and a free desert for my birthday! We ordered the 32 oz tomahawk steak, loved that came with mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and Gruyère crisp (yummy) and three different dipping sauces; we paired with a bottle of CA wine. When we got there, there was probably two other tables being served so it wasn't very busy. We ordered our drinks and they took 15minutes to bring to the table and overall of 30 minutes for our food to arrive after drinks. Lorea is located in the Pasea Hotel and Spa and channels the now defunct Outer Reef formerly at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott in Dana Point. Both spots were cold (literally) and sterile. Be prepared, it's positively arctic inside as all the ceiling to floor doors to the outside are left open. So, unless there is a Heat Dome, bring a jacket. Yes, heat lamps outside may broil your neck but your burger will still have icicles. The Decor: Linoleum flooring, concrete, wood and glass all provide a beachy vibe. A long, long Marble Bar anchors the dining room. Pendant lights hang from a coffered ceiling along with rows of chains. Nice and comforting if you're signed up for OnlyFans and your last evening on the town involved shackles and manacles. Who's in the house? Almost no one except a few guests from the Hotel who couldn't find a sitter and a few Sales guys hoping to hook up with the Target and Walmart Buyer. Okay, it was early, but still... The Bar: A handful of Signature cocktails. It reads like the Beverage Director turned the Bar Tender loose with a Chemistry Set and the Periodic Table. There is wine and beer plus all the usual suspects. Unless you are truly adventuresome stick to the classics. Brooklyn created a nasty good Dirty Martini and offered to "dirty" up even more if I wished. Two of these and you'll forget about the cold and the overhead dangling chains. You'll be too busy dancing naked on the Bar until there is peace in the World. The Staff: Like a litter of Lab Puppies, they all wanted to genuinely please everyone. The entire team I interacted with was helpful while I moved from a table near the outside to a table under an AC unit (which only the Hotel can regulate) to the Bar where I finally made my nest. Lovely Brooklyn was positively ebullient and charming. She knew the menu cold and hot and stopped by often to be friendly and to make sure I left a happy chappy. I did. The Food: The menu was large and varied featuring Cali-Spa cuisine which all read well. Keeping it simple seemed to be the simple answer to what to order. So, I simply asked for a simple Little Gem Salad. (Think Caesar Lite) along with the Blackened Cod and lastly a Koji (Fermented Rice Paste) Aged Pork Chop to take home. The Little Gem was a big Gem piled up to my letters. The whole Gem Leaves were stacked up and lay in several dollops of Harissa Garlic Mayo with a shovel full of almost crispy Spicy Breadcrumbs on the greenery and finally a generous shaving of a young Parmesan-Reggiano Cheese to top it off. There was enough for 3 or 4 people. My take was that the entire thing was rather addictive and enjoyable. The Lettuce was cold, crisp and fresh. I should've/could've tapped out after the Martini and Salad, but then the Blackened Cod landed. The Cod arrived with a half Charred Lemon and a forkful of Baby Arugula Leaves. And here's where the Cod ended up in the weeds. The line cook troweled on a schmear of spice (Salt, Pepper, Chili Powder, Garlic Powder, Paprika and Olive Oil) onto the skin which should've been removed before introducing the Cod to the Cast Iron Pan. The result was a flaccid, gelatinous, inedible skin which had to be surgically removed which I was able to accomplish with a deft hand leaving a naked unspiced piece of fish which in all fairness was cooked correctly despite the misstep with the skin. The fish was moist and flaky but I wanted it Blackened and got it whitened. The Pork Chop was sliced off the bone which lay across the top of the mini grill on which the Chop arrived. The slices had a faint remnant of Koji taste clinging to the meat. No matter, as it was destined to be diced and sauteed with cubed Dutch Baby Potatoes the next morning for Hash which was worthy of serving to company. Considering the above and in reading other reviews perhaps Lorea should be renamed La Llorana. I might try it again if I found myself hungry and in Huntington Beach...nah, I'd probably return to LSXO up the street instead. read more
