This store is absolutely amazing - the staff will help you for as long as you need it; it reminds me of how every store was back in the 60's. I've been shopping here for 20+ years and it's just *so* much more convenient than driving to Home Depot; plus you get the personalized help that can be so totally frustrating to find at the big-box stores. Are there any negatives? Well sure, they don't have the breadth and depth of product that a big-box store has because it's a small store. But wait, there's more - they also help our local community by employing and training our local high school kids. I can't give these people enough praise. read more

We have lived in Los Altos since 1973, just a few blocks from this great hardware store. Henry and his crew, including his daughter, are always friendly and very helpful in finding things. This is a great neighborhood store. We needed to buy a Drain pan for my washer and we were able to find one easily. Also our plumber needed to get some supplies quick and was able to go to the local store instead of driving all the way to Home Depot which is 20 mins away at least - he was able to go multiple times. Only I found out the prices are 2x what it is I'm Home Depot for plumbing parts . I guess that's what we pay to buy local from Los Altos :) but it's a great store Also plus points for friendly staff read more

Even though I grew up in Los Altos, this past weekend was the first time I have visited Los Altos Hardware. Immediately upon entering the store, I was greeted and asked if I needed any assistance. Wow! What a nice surprise! In my lifetime, I'm usually super lost in a hardware store and no one has ever asked me if I needed help. The associate said their store prides themselves on having the best customer service in the nation! No joke, fast forward to finalizing my purchase - Zach was so nice because I wasn't sure how to cover a hole in the wall and ultimately, he dug through the company recycling and gave me a large piece of cardboard and told me to go home, make a template and come back the next day. Not only did he help me with the hole but I returned again and he totally helped me with a plumbing problem. Zach was so nice, understanding and a really good listener! I usually go to the True Value Hardware on the El Camino Real in Mountain View, however, this morning I went there at 8:30 am and they don't open until 9:00 am. I decided to go to Los Altos that opens at 8:00 am and I was greeted with friendliness and knowledgeable employees. I had to replace a faucet cartridge that was 50 yrs old and thought it would be difficult to find. After a few minutes, they were able to match it for me. I noticed the store appeared to be much more cleaner and orderly compared to the Mountain View store. I plan to drive an extra mile to the Los Altos store from now on where I felt welcomed and in good hands! read more

I needed two 1/2" bolts with washers. I got to the store at 5:56 PM as the staff was just locking the door. They let me in, went and got my parts, took my 87 cents and thanked me for my business. This is why I always check the Los Altos Ace Hardware before going any where else. read more

As a local, I have been a fan of Los Altos Hardware for as long as it has been in business. For a small store, it is amazingly well-stocked, and the staff is tremendously knowledgeable and helpful. But I always suspected that I might be paying a premium for their service in high-rent Los Altos. Today, I ordered some Toro sprinkler nozzles on-line (because of COVID-19) and got a prompt response that they had them and were holding them for pick-up. I waited in the social distancing line outside the store for 10 minutes and when I got to the front of the line I paid for them. Imagine my astonishment when I found that they were only $3.99 apiece! Consistent good customer service at this location. You can still buy ONE item like a screw or nail or bold with out having to buy a prepackaged 5 or 10 a Orchard Supply! I went to this hardware store once on a whim because it was close by. I needed to buy a hammer to hang some pictures in my house. I now refer to this hammer as my Sexual Discrimination Hammer every time I use it. That's it's name. I went into the store and was greeted by a teenage boy who asked me if I needed help finding something. I said yes, that I was looking for a hammer. He (literally) looked me up and down (I'm wearing nice trouser jeans with some pumps and a blouse) and says 'You want to buy a hammer?' I say yes, that I need a basic hammer to hang some pictures in my house among other things. He then says 'do you want to just borrow one?' At this point I'm thinking 'hello? did you not hear me?' Instead I repeat myself 'I need to buy a hammer'. From here everything goes further downhill. I finally just grab the first one I see and gtfo-ed. After I got back to my car I was stunned, thinking 'did that really just happen'? To recap: I wanted to buy a hammer and was treated like a child. Assumedly because I was a woman wearing a nice outfit (ie not overalls). Is this 2010??? I will NEVER give my money to this business again after how I was treated. read more

The best hardware around with outstanding customer service. If it costs a dollar or two more here than at one of those huge corporate places, then I say go local because this one makes up for the extra cost in outstanding service. Last week the shop was about to close and I happened to lose a screw on my bike pedal. The fact that I was riding with one screw missing is nothing new for me, but I had to make it home before dark and needed the old rat-trap style pedal to make it home in time. I had forgotten my lights. I rolled my bike in, one of the young guys went quickly to the right size nut and bolt, grabbed it and fixed the pedal faster than it would have taken me to find the isle. They never seem to let me down. I paid for the fix, bought a few more items that I happened to remember I needed, and made it home before the law required me to have a head and tail light. Seemed helpful and well-stocked, but got some bad indirect treatment from the employees. First things first- I was really tired and I am a really tall/thin guy with tattoos, however, I dress in normal clothes and do not appear to be a dirtbag. The amount of looks I got when I walked to the cash register with spray adhesive was borderline offensive. Because, you know, I go to hardware stores to pay for $20 glue to huff. Next I needed help building a very specific product that is used to test espresso machine pressure valve pressure. I explained this to the clerk that was helping me. I then asked where the bathroom was and walked away, but ended up on the next aisle because something caught my eye. That's when another clerk approached him and asked what he was doing. He replies "I think this weird guy is building some kind of detonator or something". He then went on to say that it seemed weird that I was being spray glue, de-greaser, and hand cleaner as well as something to tolerate very high pressures. So, because I work on espresso machines he assumes I'm building a bomb. I get that it sucks to be out of high school and working at a hardware store, but to accuse a customer of building a god damned bomb while they are within ear shot is just stupid. After the shitty service topped with that gem I can't recommend going here. read more

When it comes to hardware stores, I value good, helpful service and convenience. Especially when I realize I'm one molly bolt short and need to get the shelf up. I'm not someone with largescale building projects, but I do need a variety of tools and supplies for the small projects I do work on. If you want the lowest price, go to the huge store with the packed packing lot and stand in line. However, the great advice I have received from the staff here has saved me far more than I would have buying stuff I don't need and/or the wrong tools from the warehouses. read more

Stopped here on my way home to pick up a bolt. I usually feel guilty about asking for help with such inexpensive items, so when I was offered help, I tried to say, "I'm just going to look through till I find a match for this." The kind gentleman took the bolt from my hand, spent ten minutes finding an exact match, verified it, and cheerfully rang me up... for $1.78. I will return here before Home Depot; I haven't compared prices, but this type of service is well worth a premium. read more

Los Altos is such a friendly area, that it's no surprise you encounter the friendliest hardware store-- Los Altos TrueValue Hardware. Now, I'm not exactly shopping for tools or anything too extravagant, categorically speaking as far as hardware goes, I only went in there in need of a key getting copied. Lo and behold! Quite a variety of colorful keys just waiting to be made! I was feeling radical (as usual) and went with an animal print key as opposed to any bland alternative. For any other hardware needs when I'm in the area I know where to go. :) read more

Recently crushed the chuck on my Dremel tool and was looking for a replacement. Since i was in the area i dropped in. Man theyve packed a lot of stuff in this space. It's almost claustrophobic. The kindest & most PATIENT employees who go above and beyond the norm. I know NOTHING about hardware/tools ect. The young gentlemen helping me not only looked knew in 2 seconds which type of screw I needed for my front license plate- (kept getting pulled over for not having one UGH!!) he installed so quickly. I have been meaning to write a glowing review for Los Altos Hardware for some time, now. I live in Sunnyvale, and for years I had gone to the local Orchard Supply Hardware store for any hardware, tool, etc. needs. I had been quite happy with them. Then they all closed. I was so unhappy to hear that! But then I heard about Los Altos Hardware, about a 20-minute drive from my home. I have been shopping there for awhile, now, and I could NOT be more pleased with them! They are helpful, cooperative, courteous, and they definitely go the extra mile to help their customers. Just yesterday, I had a "challenging" need to locate a certain item. Jack, from Los Altos Hardware, SO went the extra mile to help me in locating this item. But truly, everyone there is just as wonderful. What a friendly hardware store. I was planning to go to OSH while my child did team practice, but realized that going down San Antonio during rush hour was going to be impossible, given my tight timeframe. Then I remembered the Los Altos Hardware store. I found a great selection of items that I needed for my garden (plus a 20 lb bag of nyger seed that was positively a deal when compared to the small bag's price). I mean, you still have to pay, of course, but chances are they have what you need- No matter how odd your request may be, or if you don't know the name of the part you need, or even WHAT part you need, these guys can find it for you. I like to think of myself as a pretty self sufficient gal...or at least I used to be before I got married had kids and started to rely on my husband for most of the household handy work. While my husband was out of town I was confident that I could finish the last of our backyard renovations and surprise him with a beautifully planted garden and mowed lawn upon his return. All went well until I ran over a sprinkler head (unbeknownst to me until the timer went off the next morning and water sprayed all over the new deck and newly washed windows).Yes in my attempts to help I had broken the sprinklers my husband has installed less than an week before. I headed True Value to try replace the sprinkler head (despite not knowing what I was looking for or how I would install it) I was greeted at the door by friendly sales associates and when it became obvious I wasn't sure what I was looking for, I was approached by a friendly associate named Dave. He was was so great in helping me find what I needed and explain exactly how to install the new sprinkler head. Los Altos Hardware is a community treasure! Fixing up some used Ikea furniture for our student headed off to college this fall. Went in with some seat cushion seats w/stripped machine hole anchors that were missing the correct screws (previous owners used wood screws instead of machine screws). Zach helped me find the new screws, re-thread the damaged screw anchors and applied epoxy glue to help in place for the long run. Cost .49/screw price of the experience? Priceless. Can't find service like this just anywhere - you MUST choose Los Altos Hardware as your place to go when you're working on your next DIY project. Zach's name should be on the wall of fame - nice guy and simply awesome service anytime I go in there regardless of who may help you. Worth the extra trip and you're supporting a local business.
