I love a good hardware store…read more As an interior designer, I often need a part, a bolt, a light bulb, or paint sample on the fly... and I love being able to zip in and get what I need from this incredible store with a highly competent staff. Hate to say it because I love Ace in general but I won't be back to this store. The last three…read moretimes I have been since the remodel, the items I wanted were significantly more expensive then elsewhere and or they just did not have them at all. For example a 6 pack of Terry Cloth towels at $9.99 vs a Pack of 48 of the same towels at home depot for $7 more. The same fixture at Orchard at 30% less. Then I went to get a basic dolly - nothing. But what is far more frustrating is using them as a job stop when they don't even supply the tools to install the products they sell. For example, today I wanted to replace my faucet, they have several models but they don't sell the faucet installation tool that only cost $20 and takes up almost no space. On what planet does that makes sense? They got 15 kinds of pipe wrenchs and even specialized tools for installing garbage disposals but they don't carry a basic EZ change faucet wrench? Why would I buy something that cost $100 just to have to drive to a whole different store ten miles away to get the tool I need to install it. When I go to a hardware store I expect them to have the hardware for the items they sell, vs wasting my time. I am just done assuming this store has what I need to get jobs done. My local ACE store does, so that one is still my go to place.

One supposedly practical errand can turn into a full Costco run followed by an accidental garden expansion. This was my second trip to OSH. On the first, I came home with four pepper plants and soil. On the second, I somehow acquired a humongous three-cubic-foot bag of soil at 50% off, lavender, thyme, basil, and one slightly unloved Trovita orange tree that was also 50% off. Charles was wonderful. He was friendly, helpful, and the two of us wrestled that gorilla-sized bag of soil into my car together, which probably qualifies as both excellent customer service and a surprise strength-training session. The Redwood City store has a great selection, plenty of tempting plants, and apparently no safeguards for new gardeners with weak boundaries. I went in for soil and left with herbs, citrus, and responsibilities.

They have a small section that sells gardening supplies and flowers and plants. Everything was well organized. I was able to find my ground cover (something that Home Depot does not stock). Went to the cashier, no line. Paid my good and the cashier was nice enough to provide a box for my plants. I have no opinion about the prices of other goods and the customer service. This is just limited to the plant section and I was ok with that.

Menlo Park Hardware is no exception. Its decently sized but packed with all kind of stuff to check out. Customer service is good as you would expect from a small business. One nice thing about these kind of stores is the knowledgeable staff. When you come in looking for the "thing" that attaches to the dohickey....... They always know what that "thing" is. The parking can be sketch, but you can also enter the store from the parking lot in back.

Then the same guy was called to find the item but some one else from the store came and went to fetch! I thought why is this guy did not just help me at the first place? I think he is just stupid and did not find it!!! Completely waste of my time! Not sure what is wrong with Menlo Park stores! I have repeat bad experiences in a month so I guess i will not return to this town to do any purchases! Where is the old fashion service?? It's gone !! Or maybe now a day ' service' is an unknown thing!!! I will just go to home depot or Amazon. Instead! Store like ace should review their service , if Amazon or home depot monopolised the market , this will be a good reason! I got better service at home depot cone to think of it!!!

We stopped in to see if they carried Baldwin or EMTEC door levers so we could view the styles in person before choosing hardware for our new interior doors. It was meant to be a simple, straightforward visit -- just gathering information to help us make an informed decision. Instead, we were met with hostility. The elderly man working there was grumpy and unfriendly. Once he realized we were just looking and not there to purchase his attitude turned outright rude. He actually told us that if we weren't there to buy door knobs from him, he wanted us to leave. I've never experienced anything like that in a retail setting. As someone who works in customer service and takes pride in treating people with kindness, patience, and professionalism, I found his behavior shocking and frankly despicable. There is absolutely no excuse for speaking to customers this way -- especially people who came in politely and with genuine questions. I strongly recommend avoiding this store and the toxic individual who works there. There are plenty of hardware retailers who understand the basics of respect, courtesy, and customer service -- this is not one of them.

The space is manageable, the selection appears thoughtfully organized, and the overall experience is far less overwhelming than walking through a massive warehouse. For a neighborhood hardware store, it offers an impressive sense of practicality and convenience. What truly distinguished my visit, however, was the customer service. A young associate helped me search for the specific screws I needed and showed genuine patience throughout the process. Rather than simply pointing me toward an aisle, he took the time to assist me directly and made every reasonable effort to locate the correct item. His willingness to help turned what could have been a frustrating search into a pleasant and productive visit. That combination of attentive service, a well-considered selection, and an easy-to-navigate environment makes this store especially valuable. Bigger does not always mean better, and this is an excellent example of a smaller business delivering a more personal and satisfying shopping experience. It has definitely earned its place as my go-to hardware store in San Mateo.

I walked to the key counter, and stood behind a man that had been waiting for someone to help him. I asked him how long he'd been waiting, and he said it had been ~5 min since he asked for help. I walked back to the center cashier, who said there was now no one on the floor to help as everyone was on lunch break. I asked for the manager, and he said he was on a break. There were now three people waiting to get keys copied, and no staff to help. After waiting a few more minutes, I walked back to the center of the store and spoke loud enough so that the manager could hear in the back. The message? That customers needed help at the key counter. Finally, a staff person came to the counter, clearly annoyed, and said they were having problems with their staff-to-staff communication device. Unlikely. What they were having a problem with, was a clear misunderstanding of what customer service means. Talk about a failure to train employees. Never coming back, nor recommending this business to my friends or family. There are better businesses nearby, ones that actually understand the importance of customer service ... and they're just a short drive away.
