Coming from L.A., and now Living in Florida for a few years, I am finally learning the lesson about Mexican food. In L.A., the closer you are to the inner-city, the better it is. The further out you go, the more you get into Taco Bell territory. It seems in Florida that we need to get inland to the farming communities to find it. Nothing would have ever brought me to Ruskin, except that a close friend of mine (also from L.A., raised on comida mexicana) told me this place was really good. So we made the drive to what I could only best describe as Mayberry, FL. And here was this little place, tucked away next to some stores that sell things I didn't know you needed stores for. So the place is simple, but I would say divey. Just kinda small town diner-like Mexican. It had the typical decor that makes sure the Gringos feel familiar with a stereotypical Mexican theme, and the food was... REALLY good, and very inexpensive. Now I'm not gonna lie... Driving out there, we passed a few little taqueria stands on the side of the road had me wishing I had stopped at one of those, but we were committed to check this place out, and were quite happy. Another trip to Ruskin is on my horizon to check out those stands, but this place is somewhere I would have no problem going back to. read more

A very good Mexican hole in the wall restaurant with traditional style homemade food. I had a Plato Combinado with a steak taco on a homemade corn tortilla. They serve you 3 kinds of salsa: 2 mild and one hot. The hot one was my favorite.. but they were all very flavorful. Also on my plate was a chicken tostado and a pork tamale. Very good. We tried the guacamole which was spectacular with the home made chips. The Jamaica (hibiscus) drink was refreshing but not overly sweet.. just the way I like it. If a restaurant exudes authenticity from the name of the restaurant, the wooden furniture, the decor and even the paintings, one would expect the food served to be a little better than average. Unfortunately, the food was below average. This is by far the worse Mexican food that has grazed my palate. The chips tasted like it was in competition for the worse tasting chips in the world. My family and I love this place. It is authentic Mexican food. I usually get the enchiladas Suizas which are delicious. However, everything I have ever gotten here was really good. The only downfall is that it does take a bit to get the food but they do provide chips and salsa which are always a good starter. Great restaurant! read more

So, I wanted to give this 5 stars and if I had ordered tacos, I would have given 5. The guacamole was fresh and flavorful. The charro beans were the best I've ever tasted. If you aren't a fan of spicy, go with the refried beans. The tacos were amazing, especially traditional style. Unfortunately, I ordered my favorite dish, Chile relleno. It was bland and limp, and frankly unappetizing. It was dipped in a thin egg batter, which had no taste or structure. It might as well have been a thin layer of scrambled egg on my Chile. What a gem! My family and I were in the area visiting the Dooley groves to pick oranges and decide to stop by for lunch. The place was packed when we entered which is always a good sign. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful with her suggestions. She even got us a sample of all the homemade juices they serve. I ordered the chicken fajita which was absolutely delicious. The portion size is huge and can easily be shared by two. Overall, a fantastic lunch experience and will definitely be back when in the area. read more

I tried Steak, chicken and al pastor tacos in both corn and flour they were amazing! I also got guacamole and salsa which was flavorful and the chips are soooo good! Took the Fam to this place based on other reviews, they looked good and seemed like it would be a decent lunch spot. Walking in it was packed, and had a very strong and offensive odor, weird odor. It wasn't a food odor but like a pesticide or mothballs. We didn't see any open tables so we were going to switch things up. One cleared and we sat down, ordered drinks and then waited.......... finally waitress came back to order lunch. We ordered and waited nearly 40 min to get our meal. Kids said it was ok, wife liked her tacos and I was disappointed. I ordered the shrimp soup, when it came it had 5 shrimp and to my dislike had the tails still on in the soup. I mean cmon "cheffery" 101 take the tails off to put them in soup. The description said it would have carrots and potatoes, I though that sounds good. When the soup came it didn't have a single potato or carrot, just broth and shrimp with tails on, smh CMON! A whole potato is very inexpensive and wouldn't kill your food costs, carrots either. I might add observing them clean and turn a table, they brushed left over food onto the floor and sprayed with windex. What is that? I mean cleaning solution too expensive? This place is a dive, I usually like dives but for the drive and mediocre quality of food I would go elsewhere. I am usually pretty easy to please, good food and even half decent attentive service is all I look for in any place. This lacked in both arenas. We've never been disappointed with anything we've ordered, but a special shout out for the spicy seafood soup and the yummy wet burrito. We have opted not to dine in these days due to COVID. One could say this is a hole in the wall sort of place located next to a bait shop in a detached and somewhat deserted strip of stores. If you can get over the intimidation of the barren exterior and courageously open the door and walk in, you will be greeted with some of the mouth watering smells that will make your taste buds water even before you sit down. The menu features the traditional Mexican - tacos, quesadillas, plates of grilled skirt steak, rice, beans, appetizers. One of the hidden stars at this restaurant are the Soup - in house made from scratch brothy with large chunks of vegetables and hunks of meat ( beek, pork, chicken ) or shrimp, seafood. The soup have the perfect thickness of broth and well balanced with salt and taste. The vegetables are of perfect consistency of softness and chunk. Get the Horchata to drink and be sure to order one / two tamale which are perfectly steamed and bursting with flavor. Los Amigos doesn't offer much in ambiance, the clientele seem pre-dominantly Spanish speaking - all great signs of a truly favorite Mexican food joint. The serving staff are polite and helpful. Well I guess I will never learn. After vowing never to return to this restaurant, I decided to give it another chance. Needless to say the results were disastrous. I again ordered the sizzling steak fajitas and my wife ordered the taco combo meal. After waiting for over 20 minutes our meals finally arrived. My steak was over cooked but more importantly my wife's steak tacos were ice cold. Since we were both hungry we eat our meals in silence but now have decided that we WILL NEVER EVER return to this hellhole. Time to find another place to satisfy my Mexican Food urges and ensure I tell the 12 couples who we usually dine out with in our dinner club to never go back to this establishment. We rely heavily on reviews, so when my in-laws moved into the area naturally I went to Yelp for suggestions. My mother-in-law loves Mexican and my father-in-law loves spicy! I'm glad we read reviews about Los Amigos, because we would never have just happened upon it. And if we had, as other reviewers have said it's pretty unassuming from the outside so we might have been hesitant to try it. When we pulled up, I once again assured everyone it will be worth it based on the reviews. And we weren't disappointed! Everything was fresh and homemade - even the chips and salsa. We tried the guacamole based on reviews and were so glad we did! Prices were very reasonable. We were there on a Monday night and it wasn't jammed, but they had a steady flow of customers including people stopping in for take-out. I was very disappointed with the service I received while there. the kid behind the counter was friendly but I asked if they could make me chorizo tacos and was told no. why not? you have chorizo and of course you have everything else needed. my girlfriend asked for a cheese quesadilla with refried beans. we again were told no. again I ask why not? you have cheese and you have refried beans. why not make a paying customers what they want? After that I wanted to leave but my girlfriend wanted to try it. so we did. BIG MISTAKE!! My weekend plans got canceled because my throne required assistance being held to the floor. I've eaten alot of Mexican food made by me or someone else. I know reheated food when I eat it. I know the taste of Pico that was not stored at the correct temperature.
