The culinary curse of Abilene continues with yet another restaurant that does not know how to cook, let alone cook "Authentic Mexican Cuisine". After living in Abilene for 6 years, I have yet to find a non chain restaurant that delivers great cuisine. After reading lots of great reviews about the great Mexican food at Los Arcos, I decided to give them a try. When I walked in, my hopes went up. The decor is top notch and looks a lot like a real Mexican restaurant in Mexico (I lived there for 6 years). But the decor is where authentic anything ends. I thoroughly searched the menu for anything that resembled real Mexican food. All I could find is the standard Texmex items you would Find anywhere. No Mexican restaurant can call themselves authentic if they don't at least serve, "Caldo De Res". Los Arcos does not even know what Caldo De Res is. Not finding any authentic Mexican items on the menu, I settled on a taco salad and my wife got the spinach enchiladas. I would be lying if I said that it was the worst Mexican food I have eaten, because that award belongs to the Monterrey Restaurant (also in Abilene), but it was at least the second worst I have eaten. I really don't think these people have any idea what Mexican food is supposed to taste like. After the first bite of their bland and pale anemic looking refried beans, I was certain I was eating in the geriatric cafeteria of a really bad nursing home. My taco salad consisted of about a cup of bland tasteless refried beens, a couple of teaspoons of boiled unseasoned ground beef, half a cup of shreded iceberg lettuce, and a few sprinkles of cheese. The was no sign of a tomato, onion or guacamole. They did not even offer any dressing to go with the salad. My wife's spinach enchilada was a little better, but far from being anything great (TV diner quality). The bottom line is, these people need to visit a Mexican spice store and learn how to make Mexican food. Mexican food has has spices in it, spices which I don't think these cooks know the name of. Until then, they should remove, "Authentic Mexican Cuisine" from the sign. Heck, their food could not even pass for decent TexMex. Visited family in Abilene and was craving some food from back home (San Antonio) and found Los Arcos online. The salsa was very flavorful and had a good heat while the chips were nice and crisp. Fajitas "San Antonio style" were put to the test and they did not disappoint. I give this place a 4 star rating for Abilene Mexican food, I may have just been surprised that the food was actually good and not like that Tia Rosas cafe stuff (taco cabana w/o breakfast). I took a star away for the flavorless rubbery pre packaged tortillas that they serve. Introduce hot homemade tortillas and this place is a solid 5. read more

Terrible!!! I had been recommended by people that this is a great restaurant to visit. Absolutely not! I didn't get to taste their food but I'm pretty sure it was a fail.... Service is everything and Arcos totally missed it. We went Friday night and we expected it to be busy. I had a group of 6 we were seated everything was great. I noticed a group of like 20 come in after us than a group of 10. We went ahead and ordered before them that way we our order wouldn't be behind such big parties. Well after about 45 min I see the larger tables being served before us. Our waitress no where to be found!!!! I politely asked another server if he could check on our order. 15 min later no one came.... By this time I was SO over it. Grabbed my family and went to the register just to pay for our drinks. Stupid lady just apologized. She couldn't even say "well hold on let me go see what the hold up is? Or if your food is ready?" PURE LAZINESS!!!!!!!! I've ordered twice from here, both times delivery. Just tonight I ordered the Tex Mex plate. Two Enchiladas and two tamales with rice and beans. I also ordered pico de gallo to dump on top of it all. It was delicious and it really filled me up. The enchiladas were stuffed with chicken, and the pork tamales were great. The pico was fresh and delicious. This restaurant used to be my husband's favorite that he would come to each year when he visited his grandparents. Needless to say, he was very excited to bring his family here to eat while we were on vacation. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. The food took forever to come out, yet when it arrived it was not hot at all and seemed to have been cooked much earlier than our order was placed. What we ordered had sides of pico and other toppings for a taco salad listed on the menu that also did not actually come with it. If you like an expensive tex-mex meal that is fit for a cafeteria with their prepackaged condiments, then this is the place for you! read more

Because the food is really solid, not exceptional, but very good, I'd like to give this place 5 stars, but because of the service, I cannot. We have been left to wait for a table for unreasonably long times, with no one in front of us and empty, bussed tables in clear view. When you are seated, it would be very nice if there was silverware, or at the very least, napkins on the table. We always have to ask. If you drip your salsa, it would be nice to have a napkin. My boyfriend got up and got paper towels out of the bathroom, last time, after we asked for napkins and didn't get them until our food came. He also ran out of tea, even though the glasses were huge, and was out for quite a while before she checked on us. And the noise level is awful. I know people who are sensitive to that, who will never go back. Bottom line, good food, bad service=bad experience. read more

The chips and salsa here are about the only redeeming thing. The salsa is also the only thing here that tastes fresh. I have a lot of friends that rave about the food, but I'm still yet to have a really good meal. Every time I've been here the food has tasted stale or just bad. read more

We use to love this place, we were regulars. Went there last night and it was the worst experience, service was bad, food was mediocre. The place was packed, and we were told they only have three servers and that will be the norm from now on. We asked repeatedly for more chips that never came, but our waitress brought more to the tables around us. It will be a very long time before we go back if ever. read more

Went Friday night with Family that was in town. Very disappointed in the service and the food. It was a lot better before the fire. Meat in the Fajitas was full of grizzle and very chewy. The service also left something to be desired. it took at least 15 min to get refills on our sweat tea best part of the meal. Something has changed the recipes the cooks. I was so upset when this restaurant caught on fire. I miss this place so much. I know that they will be back and better than ever. I have been coming to Los Arcos for over 14 years now and I always get the weekend special "beef fajitas for two for $12.95." I usually eat here 3-4 times a month. My party of 6 was seated quickly and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. The chips were stale tasting but the salsa was pretty good. We received our drinks quickly but our Dr Pepper was a little flat and tasted awful. Was looking forward to a nice margarita but all they had was corona-Rita's so know that ahead of time if you just want an original margarita. All of the food came out quickly and was hot. However all of food was unfortunately bland and required a lot of salt and salsa to help it out. Other downside is that all of food was saturated in grease. Which I am sure didn't help the taste of the food. It was good to be able to get in and out in a timely fashion but I wished the food was all I was told it would be by a few friends. Hands down one of the best salsas I've had, I have never been a big fan of cheese enchiladas, one day I ordered a plate that had one, and as soon as I took a bite, I almost jumped out of my seat. THE best cheese enchilada I've ever had! And now I have a craving I have to get fixed ever so often. Well not what I expected. The food is okay but store bought tortillas?...Give me a brake. You'd be better off going to La Popular or La Taqueria a Ranchera on Ambler. Both restaurants serve homemade tortillas. Would have gave it more stars but can't get past the store bought tortillas. 20 years ago I had an argument with a good friend of mine who is from Georgia. He said there ain't nothing better than homemade biscuits. I said no way and mentioned a popular biscuit company you could buy at the store. This went on for a little while then he hit me with a statement that stopped me in my tracks and the debate ended. He said "so then store bought tortillas are better than homemade." I ate here while in Abilene on business after being told by several people it was the best Mexican food in town. If this is the best, I don't want to see the other ones. Everything about the meal was awful except the salsa. Queso clearly came out of a can (think stadium nachos), guacamole was nothing but pureed avocado with no seasoning, onions, tomato, peppers- completely plain and bland. I got a combination plate with three items and all were really disappointing. The taco and chile relleno were soggy and greasy, beans were bland, and the cheese enchilada was the worst I've ever had after 27 years living in Texas. The sauce tastes like water and stale ground chili powder and nothing else. Service was pretty good, but I would eat at Taco Bell before I would return here. The food was just that terrible. Not even one star. Opens at 9:30. Went at 10:00. Only one car there. One couple was inside seated at a table. I'm thinking already that it may not be good, but I was willing to chance it. Ordered Huevos Rancheros. One egg was overcooked. Other egg undercooked - runny white. Sauce on the eggs wasn't good. Beans were bland - no flavor. Potatoes were edible. If you live in Abilene, then you know that we don't have a whole lot in the way of good, Mexican restaurants. I'd heard good things about Los Arcos, so I thought I'd give it a try. You are to pour your salsa from a cup into little bowls. In a way, that's helpful, no double dipping. However, Mexican food is messy enough without having to do that. It really didn't help that paper towels aren't kept at the table and your napkin/flatware aren't brought out until your food is. The food was brought out extremely quickly. The beans were a gray color, which was quite off putting. I'm not one to ever add salt, but the rice and beans really needed it. The menu promised a salad, but I was given shredded iceberg, instead. The taco shells also looked store bought. The tea was good. The beef in the tacos was better than I'm used to. My kids really enjoyed the cheese enchiladas. Nothing to rant or rave about. Food wasn't very good. We had fajitas for 2. Meat was poor quality and not very flavorful. Tortillas tasted like they were cheap grocery store tortillas. The sides were all very bland, beans, rice, even the guacamole. We got some chili con caso and it was basically ballpark nacho cheese from a can. I'm really surprised at such high ratings and comments about the good quality of the food here. We came in behind a large party of 20 or so, so service was slow... But that's okay since it's a local business and it was a really big party. The chips were kept full and the salsa was spicy. It took about an hour or so to get our food (a number 16, chicken fried steak and a kid's grilled cheese) from the time we ordered. The chicken fried steak was previously frozen and when cooked had sat in oil long enough to make it mealy and saturated with grease on the underside. The French fries were also cold and soggy. The kids grilled cheese appeared to have been microwaved and the enchiladas and tamales were dry and poorly seasoned. Any one issue by itself would be understandable because they were indeed busy, but there was also plenty of indication that quality would have been lacking anyways due to the methods that the meals were cooked with. Overall a poor experience with poor food quality, but two stars for a very polite waitstaff. Edit: when we went to pay out, we shared our issue about the food and they took the chicken fried steak off the bill, so I really do appreciate their customer service. Our server was great and showed us the perfect amount of attention. As my companion says as I start to draft this review, "I am going to give this place a fail." And he will eat anything. I read all of the other reviews, and all of the people who rated this 4 or 5 are sorely deprived. This is perhaps the worst Mexican food I have had. I ordered the fajita taco salad to have something light. Not only was the meat tougher than the leather strap on my purse, but it was so oily that there was actually (no exaggeration) an inch high of oil in the salad bowl. The tacos, enchiladas, etc. were also terrible. The ground beef was like little morsels of saw dust. They have no tea, and yes, despite it also being listed as the best bar in town on Yelp, you will not find a margarita, only Corona and Bud. On the bright side the service was good. We ended up here because it was listed as the number one restaurant in town by Yelp. If you are reading this, drive to the next town, seriously. read more

Los Arcos is a local favorite. Their restaurant is homey and calm. The chips and salsa are great, service is great and owner is really nice. The parking is not great. The food as a whole is hit or miss, but overall decent. I am not sure there is alot that is actually homemade, but the fajitas usually have a good flavor. read more
