Was craving our favorite menudo as we only come here for it on the weekend, only to be disappointed when we ordered. The menudo tasted completely different as it lacked its usulal flavor and tripe. The in house tortillas change from flour to corn. Only to find out the management and staff changed completely. After you order, they have you pay before sitting down and eating. And for $23 dollars for a small bowl of only just feet, not worth the price. Sadly this spot will no longer on my list to come back to for menudo. read more

Los Compadres was such a pleasant surprise as I needed to get something to eat real quick so it was the first place that I found on my way from SFO. Parking is tough in that area but I got lucky by getting a metered spot right up front. They have a dining area inside but you can order to go as well. They make it in front of you and they can can accommodate any special requests, if needed. I got a vegetarian breakfast burrito, and it was the most flavorful burrito ever! Truly the best and it so hit the spot. Their burritos are huge so $11 can totally feed two people. I just got this Chile rellano burrito less than an hour ago and have been enjoying it during my break. Was on my way to get a super burrito from El Farolito and saw that Los Compadres was open. Have not been here for years! Why? I never know when they are open since they have weird hours and days open. Decided to get a lengua taco which was really savory and tasty and a Super burrito w/Carne asada. It's a huge and big burrito for 8 dollars. Good decent burrito but it's tough when you have so many great taquerias around that make better burritos? Staff was wearing masks and service was fast and efficient. Parking on the street. The only thing I have to complain about is their hours. The food didn't taste fresh. The chips were stale and the Salsa was fermenting literally tasting fizzy when I tasted it.

We stopped by this quaint little restaurant on our way to fish in the morning. We had 2 chorizo breakfast burritos, super. I can say that these were the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. Later we learned it was because the chef makes his own chorizo. We came back for the pozole after fishing, and it did not disappoint. They make the corn tortillas fresh throughout the day. Lots of construction workers come here constantly. I have only gotten the regular soft taco, AL pastor. It's delicious and they load it up with a great portion. 2 of them with some chips and I'm full, 3 of them I'll have a leftover taco. 3.75 each taco but we'll worth it. We went there on Saturday, 09/16/23, and purchased 1 regular burrito, 2 super burritos and 1 chille relleno for the ridiculous price of $51.46. The food was mediocre and nothing like we have experienced in the past! All the prices have been doubled and the quality has been reduced by 50% as well. Not impressed. I was in the neighborhood and I wanted something quick to eat on the go. I quickly checked Yelp and Los Compadres' ratings and decided to grab a burrito here. I noticed they had Lengua so that sealed the deal for me. Came in around noon and there were a few people dining on the tables and 3 staff working behind the counter with no one in line. I stood there....and I stood there....and I stood there which seemed like an eternity as I had a 12:45 meeting to attend do. Then the lady behind the counter finally noticed me and asked, "What do you want?" I didn't know it got that cold in this part of South City. Quickly placed my order (regular-sized burrito) since I already knew what to get and waited for it. As the guy was handing me the burrito, I was thinking, "Is that it?" Damn...that's not a burrito. That's a shrimp burrito without the shrimp. This is half the size of a regular burrito in a lot of places. And they skimp a lot on the meat. All I tasted were beans, rice and sauce with a few sprinkles of Lengua meat scattered around. There's more meat served in a lot of Taco Trucks I've frequented and the regular-sized burritos are pretty big. The flavor was also lackluster at best. Hold on, Los Comprades with an average rating of 4.5 stars is good but not Tapatia/Farolito good. Farolito and Tapatia are joints, with their fresh meats, the pinnacle of SSF taqueria eats. I wish they had less than one star to give but oh well... Not only is this place very unsanitary & the customer service is terrible. But they are down right racist. They were more concerned what race I was & why I didn't speak Spanish. The man preparing my food asked why I didn't speak Spanish. I explained that I was Filipino. He did not care & continued to speak Spanish to me. My co-worker said jokingly, "it's cause your Mexican just admit it." I said to the man, "I'm not Mexican." The man said, "I didn't say that, I just thought you looked Spanish." In the last year (2010), Los Compadres had the best for burritos for us. 1. The burritos have a huge amount of meat. 2. They serve tongue. 3. There IS cheese and sour cream like they say and it wasn't a lie. 4. The burritos aren't soupy or runny. 5. It wasn't a salad burrito. Nothing like corn in it. I've gone to a couple of places and the burritos were so-so in a bad kind of way. The meat was overcooked or cooked a long time ago and didn't have much taste. The meat at Los Compadres was tender. There was only one problem--they're a little on the cold side for me (who was used to hotter [temperature-wise] burritos. Nowadays, all the burritos seem sort of lukewarm. I don't know what it is anymore. The cheese is never melted. They rest in cold lumps at various spots in the burrito. I gave Los Compadres 3 stars because they had a good solid burrito. Not a lot of complains about it. They're the best I've had in a long time, but nothing that knocked my socks off. I am not raving in absolute madness that I'm in love or that we "just have to" go and eat there every day. If you need to get a burrito, I would go here. It's not a place for a romantic date or a place to have your poetry workshop meet at, but the other places are pissing me off (even El Farito). read more

The food is good and fresh. And fast. But it would be more enjoyable if they didn't apply strong-smelling industrial cleaners in the kitchen in the back of the restaurant before closing, when customers are still eating. After a few minutes spent eating my late lunch, I had to take my meal to go after smelling the strong cleaning fluids. Go figure - the day I get ROTD for La Tapatia, I decide to go here. I guess it was the 4.5 star review and the fact that it was so nearby my work that I was like what the hell lets give it a go. So it's very taqueria-esque, a grill, some steam trays. The have the usual selection of meat choices for the tacos and burritos - where I was rather surprised (even though I didn't order them) was that they had taquitos. Nice. I don't see taquitos in northern california. I was a little dismayed that their specials were very few and there was no salsa bar - a bottle of hot sauce on the table was about it. I ordered a quesadilla with pollo asado. I was also happy I didn't have to ask for "Super" to get sour cream and guacamole with it. Now this was actually really good, the chicken was very tasty and almost slightly crispy. I'd go back and get a pollo asado burrito since that meat was excellent! Very pleasantly surprised. I got there pretty much right at noon and it was empty, within 10 minutes there was quite a line. Despite a few deficiencies in my opinion the flavor the food here is very good and while I still like La Tapatia better, you do get a place to sit here and the prices are about right. I think a return visit for the carne asada and those taquitos will help validate my first impression. read more

Couldn't agree more about the traditional vegetariano burrito... at least from the veggie perspective; however, I'd take a dive over a ritzy sit down any day, for beauty is on the inside and dirty is only linoleum deep. And by the way... "autntico" is the source of many a burrito's charm. Sort of like how we love musicians who grew up in the ghetto, raised by an abusive, alcoholic father. So this is the "real" restaurant that the taco truck in downtown SF is based out of. The place is a little dingy so have your food to go and you can enjoy delicious Mexican food in the comfort of your own home instead. Word of warning...the nice ladies who work the counter here speak minimal English, so you have to be crystal clear in what you want or go in with the ability to order in Spanish. We learned that the hard way when we went in to order some nachos, burritos, and tacos to go. The nachos, which either came with meat (aka "large") or without meat ("small") are rocking. We had the nachos with both al pastor and carne asada. The al pastor was really flavorful, even though it was re-heated on the griddle. The counter ladies will pile on the sour cream, guacamole and cheese and it makes for some kick-ass, though highly fattening nachos. Their hot sauce is also very good. Overall, a great taqueria serving some delicious food best eaten privately at home, where you won't be seen scarfing nachos down at an un-ladylike pace. read more

You might be high on authenticity. Let's say on one end of your scale is Chevy's, way up near the other end is Los Compadres. This place sells down home authentic Big Time. Of course it doesn't hurt that the place is on Grand Avenue too. If this was Hollywood, there'd be chickens scurrying all over the place. I can't help it... old black n white photos in the booths, only one server and cook can speak english... the corn tortillas are home made and a lil thick... you gotta love it! I've had their burritos, and their dinner plates. Everything is fresh and very flavorful. How often do you get half an avacado on your salad? Just eating in that place makes me feel that this is the way this type of food is supposed to taste. Even though very little english is spoken, the help is very friendly and you will be taken care of. Ask about the daily specials posted on the menu board, because you might not see them at your average Mexican Restaurant (especially Chevy's). One day they had Mexican BBQ pork ribs. Just awesome. For $6.25+ tax, I ended up with far and away the best breakfast burrito of my life and I've had many, from San Diego to L.A. to the Mission and more. This one topped them all - hand-cut potatoes (since they didn't have them pre-cut), tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, egg hashed together on the grill, cheese, fantastic salsa roja that tied everything together, and a bit of guacamole. I can see the concerns regarding cleanliness from the physical plant itself, but an older gentleman was hand-rolling and dropping meatballs into albondigas and I didn't see him touch anything else or anything that crazy. I can't speak to their other food, but if this is any indication, I would think the rest of the food would be at least above average. Great stop, convenient for wasting some time right off the 101 before picking someone up at SFO.
