I was prompted to try this spot when I read Eater's Best Places to Eat in Richmond online and saw that their tortas received high praise. As luck would have it, I was in the area to take a long walk around the Marina Bay estuary, so grabbing a bite here appealed to me in the late afternoon. I parked on the residential block around the corner where my car was pelted with falling sticky figs. The taqueria appeared to be run by a husband and wife. There were no other customers at the time, so I received attention right away. I wanted some beef tongue, so without looking at the menu, I asked if he made a Torta Lengua. He said he didn't but could make tacos with tongue. OK, two $4.50 Lengua Tacos please. Mixed with onion and tomatillo salsa, the tongue was tasty laid on corn tortillas (Photo 10). I read the suadero was outstanding, so I'll try to avoid the falling figs and come back. First thing I noticed was that they no longer have the bar with the wide spread of vegis and salsas that was described in the article, so I was a bit disappointed. We ordered the al pastor tacos, suadero, and carnitas al vapor. The tacos were good, but the meat proportions were a bit slim. Be careful with the red salsas as they were pretty spicy! The tortillas all tasted the same, even though I asked for al vapor (Jalisco style steamed tortilla) so maybe the server didn't quite heard me. What we ordered: -Plato de lamb carnitas ($19): The plate comes with a decent portion of meat, rice, beans, some pico de gallo, and warm tortillas. The meat was tender and flavorful and I personally like lamb and haven't had it cooked this way so I enjoyed it. The portion size is modest but the tortillas were plentiful at 5 pieces. -Pambazo torta ($14): I haven't tried this dish elsewhere but I think it's a torta with chorizo, potatoes, cotija cheese, and lettuce. It was crispy on the outside and comforting throughout. We liked the different textures and toppings. -Chips and Salsa: These were on the house and the chips were fine and the salsa had a good flavor and kick. I preferred this salsa over the two they offered in the squeeze bottles. From those, the green salsa was my top choice. -Horchata: Sweet, creamy, and fragrant. True Californians know salsa is meant to be poured onto each bite of your burrito and Taqueria Maria provides 3 tasty homemade salsas to do that with. Staff are friendly and fast. I'm also pretty sure it's family run. Not the place for a fancy meal or decor but if you want Mexican food done right and big portions for your money then this is your spot. I ordered 7 tacos total and spent $22 (with tax). The tacos are well stacked with meat which makes the tacos look amazing at first glance. After taking a few bites I have really liked them. Some meat pieces were a bit crunchy but the onion and cilantro with salsa verde really take that away negative away. Overall, these tacos were very delicious and well made, unlike other places these tacos did have lots of meat and flavor. Id say the only downside is they don't already pre put the salsa onto the tacos and do only give 1 small container of each salsa which was barely enough for all the tacos.
