This is my third review of Los Cucos (...going back 10 years to my first one in 2015), and is likely my last review. For date night last night, my wife and I patronized Los Cucos here in Sandy, as it had been at least four years since we last ate at this restaurant. We were seated immediately, but it was almost as if we were in a different restaurant from what we remembered from our past visits. Last night it was bright, stark, noisy, and felt like a sports bar with all the many flat-screen TVs on the wall. They even had a huge speaker system hanging from the ceiling, set up, no doubt for large parties? Not what we expected for a well-patronized Mexican (Tex-Mex?) restaurant in Sandy. Rosa was our server and did a nice job taking care of us, but it really went downhill from there. The menu was impressive, I'll give them that...but so were the prices (and not in a good way.) My wife ordered Las Sebas (a mini smothered chimichanga with chile verde and two fried taquitos, served with rice and guacamole), and I went with my fave, Carnitas (chunks of slow-cooked pork loin served with tomatillo sauce, sour cream, fresh sliced avocado, onions, pico de gallo, rice, "borracho" beans, and tortillas.) Sounds de-lish, right? Keep reading. I also has a large Margarita ($12.25 + rocks & salt)...and we both enjoyed the chips and salsa...with a warm red salsa and a cool avocado salsa. Then the robot appeared. Yes, of all places, they use a robot to deliver the food to our table...but it still required a server to pull the plates off the robot and put them in front of us. A robot? Really? Our delivery robot stopped just shy of our table right there in the middle of the aisle, and it sat there...for 3-4 minutes waiting for staff. That was 3-4 minutes of our food cooling off even further, not to mention the time it took in the kitchen to load it and the time it took to crawl halfway across the restaurant to our table. Gimmick. I'll speak to my food as it had a nice presentation, but after digging in, it was lacking in many respects. The carnitas were chunky and moist, but damn those big fat globs that were hidden under the meat. Yuck. Honestly, I get much better carnitas locally from Gual Bertos and La Hacienda here in Draper. And the tortillas? Worthless. They were just dry, flaky, cold, and crumbled as I tried to roll them. I had one bite of one. A total waste. The rest of my plate was OK, especially the "borracho beans". The rest was OK but there wasn't a lot of it...and a fair amount (pico de gallo and the lettuce) was hidden under the two flat pieces of lettuce that the kitchen used to decorate my plate. All in all, it didn't seem worth the $21.00 I paid for my entree. I also took about 1/3 of my meal home in a hinged lid container. The whole experience could have been way better. The ambiance was terrible, the food was OK, service was good (but seemed rushed as Rosa brought us our check halfway through our meal and then immediately asked us if we wanted containers for take-home...what?), and the cost (the two entrees, a Sprite, and a large margarita) was $69.63 out the door with gratuity. Hmmmm. No value there. As I said earlier, it really could have been better. A lot better. And just how did this venue get voted "Best in SLC" for a Mexican Restaurant? 2 Stars, and we're never coming back.

I went with a group. We had a reservation but had to wait a bit. But they quickly served us drinks, chips and salsa, so all was good. It was a Tuesday, so we had live music from a mariachi band. It was a bit too loud at times but also very good. I got a ground beef chimichanga with refried beans and rice and it was outstanding! I could only eat half. But that was also because I wanted a little dessert. I shared an order of churros (5) which came with fudge sauce and ice cream. Delicious!!! It was an overall good night.

We ended up at Los Cucos twice this week! There are so many tasty-looking dishes there that I simply haven't been able to try all the ones that look good. This week I tried the pollo poblano and the shrimp tacos, both excellent. We noticed some of the decorations seem to have changed lately, and it doesn't feel as festive inside as it used to. The service is attentive. We came with a large party of 70 people last night, so obviously some things fell through the cracks--that's to be expected. The server took my husband's order incorrectly and brought him a similar but more expensive dish. My husband brought the mistake to the staff's attention but still accepted the food in order not to cause a hassle. It would have been nice if he had been charged for the less expensive food that he actually ordered rather than the more expensive dish he did not ask for. However, he was charged the more expensive amount, which definitely left us feeling a bit soured on the experience.

I was there when I was visiting my best friend and his family in Utah and this place is good! The tableside guacamole and the Mexican bowl with chicken is really good. Our server was amazing and funny to where she gave us great recommendations throughout the menu! The place is also clean, very lively but you can still have a night to remember or a casual get together with friends over chips and drinks!

We had lunch at Los Cucos as a team, and I think it was my first time eating here even though I've lived close by for 9 years. I would lean toward 3.5 stars, but it was a good enough experience I feel OK bumping up to 4. We were seated right away at a table. There were lots of TVs with sports on, which was nice for the sports enthusiast on our team. It was clean and not too loud. I was really impressed with the Jetsons cart that delivered food to a few specific tables. I had never seen one before; it was very cool. The chips and salsa were good and came out quickly. There were two kinds of salsa, and both were fairly mild. I'm a wuss with spice, so let that reassure you if you're the same. The menu was actually really big, so if you're an indecisive person maybe check it out ahead of time. I also felt like my lunch was not going to be cheaper than $14 as most of the entrees are pretty pricy, and some of the meals were just way too much food. So if you're looking to minimize spend, this may not be the spot. I ordered the sour cream enchiladas. They were good--nothing special. There was a lot more sour cream than I was expecting. Our server was attentive and did a good job for us. Overall, no complaints other than the price point, really. It wasn't a standout spot for me in terms of Mexican food, but if you need a decent spot, give it a go.

Well sometimes you just have to try a place no matter how the bad reviews. Well the decor was nice and we got sat quickly but we chose to eat in the bar! We did wait for a long time for someone to bring us drinks. The food looked ok and some items on the menu were not even Hispanic lol but chose to share some nachos and taquitos. Now I have been to non Hispanic places and their nachos were pilled high and were bomb this place YIKES I got maybe 8 chips with meat on them and lettuce and tomato and sour cream In the middle I am not sure how these nachos were meant to be like this but disappointed. The chicken taquitos were ok... I have had better, their chips and salsa were good the guac sauce good too. Other than that yea be careful when going here I don't think I'll be going back. Our waiter was pretty busy so there were times we had to wait if we needed something.

We gave Los Cucos a couple of tries but unfortunately I feel it just misses the mark, especially for the price point. On a positive note, the restaurant has a ton of seating and the guys at the front were friendly. Chips and salsa are good. Queso is decent. Beyond that, every dish my partner and I have tried has been pretty mediocre and a bit expensive for what you end up getting. I've had worse, but nothing about the food would make me come back. On our visits we tried a chicken stuffed avocado, enchiladas, tacos, a Mexican bowl, and none were very good. On top of that, service has been off. Not bad, but a weird vibe from the servers that I can't figure out. Overall it does not make for a very enjoyable dining experience. Maybe we hit them on a few off days, but I don't think I would return.

I returned to this place after a decade after a bad experience. A lot can change during this time and the wife was hungry, so we decided to give it another chance. It won't take me another ten years to return, especially with a mariachi band on Tuesdays. First off, delightful service by Grace. She gracefully tolerated our Spanish practice and was wonderfully adept at her job, even upselling the flan to me, lol. The parilla... Lord have mercy. The menu claims it's for two people but honestly it could feed four. For fifty bucks this dish was delivered looking like an altar of fajitas, about 8 inches tall and choked with a juicy and generous combination of jalapeño sausage, chicken and beef. Toss in homemade tortillas and a plate of rice, beans, pico de gallo, and more, and you have a steaming hot party on the table. Damn good. I'm bringing friends next time. Tip: There is a coupon for a small appetizer when you check in here. We got the nachos ($10) by using it and enjoyed them quite a bit.

First off, let me just say that Los Cucos is clearly where dreams go to become fried, stuffed, and served with a side of rice and beans. I ordered the fried stuffed avocado with chicken, and let me tell you, it was an experience. When the plate arrived, I swear I heard a mariachi band start playing in my head. The avocado was golden, crispy, and shaped like the kind of treasure Indiana Jones would risk his life to steal. Cutting into it was like opening a portal to another dimension--a dimension where avocados and chicken join forces to make your taste buds do the Macarena. The chicken was so tender and flavorful, it felt like it had been marinated by a grandmother who takes secrets to the grave. And the avocado? Oh, the avocado. It was creamy, buttery perfection, wrapped in a crunchy shell so divine it probably has its own fan club. Butter my honey! But here's the kicker: eating it was like playing Jenga with my arteries. Each bite was a delicious gamble, and by the end, I wasn't sure if I was full or just experiencing nirvana. The service? Impeccable. The waitress was sweet. The atmosphere? Delightfully vibrant. My regret? That I only ordered one. My doctor's regret? That I even ordered one at all. If you're ever in Sandy, Utah, and you don't stop by Los Cucos for the fried stuffed avocado, what are you even doing with your life?

The worst service we received out of any restaurant by far! We arrived at 9pm on Friday night on 6/24/16 as we wanted Mexican and we were in the area. We got seated at a booth where it was very cold, adjacent to the exit door. The server got our drinks and order quickly but after that we were completely forgotten. We were waiting at least 45 minutes for our food! We noticed something was up because the server, hostess and another employee were in the middle discussing something. The hostess came back to our table and came up with a poor excuse blaming the computer for the screwup and gave us a lame discount for our meal! You had at least 5-6 parties here with their food before us, how could you possibly have your computer screw up with our order? The staff screwed up and didn't want to take responsibility. Shame on you!! By the time we received our food, it was 10pm. We didn't have time to sit and eat our food, since we had young children that needed to go to bed so we had to take it to go. We had not expected to leave the restaurant that dissatisfied with the service. The other thing that surprised us was that the restaurant hours are posted from 11am to 11pm on Google and on their webpage but we saw at least 4 employees coming out of the kitchen and exiting thru the door next to us around 9:15-9:30 and the overall staff having the attitude that the restaurant's hours of operation are whenever they feel like it. The food wasn't great either. Los Cucos is really Las Cacas....crap service!!!! And the quality of the food is no better than the ghetto Mexican joints on State Street. We will take our business elsewhere! read more

This place is a solid 4 stars. Maybe 4.5. Don't let the cheesy decor and branding deter you from dining here. Our server (thanks AJ!!) was quick to take our order, and give us recommendations that HE actually eats. We both collectively eye rolled over how annoying it is to point out the "popular" items. He gave us the insider tips on what to eat here. And he didn't steer us wrong. We shared the carne margarita (a meat wrapped burrito, basically), medium rare. It was spot on. Medium rare steak meat wrapped around wonderfully cooked and flavored shrimp. The flavors were exciting without being overwhelming. We ordered the steak cheese dip as an appetizer, it was stringy and cheesy and gooey. The steak wasn't overdone and the spices well blended. The chicken/cheese stuffed jalapeños were also fantastic. Even on day two! The sauce added a lot of flavor to these. Tons of cheese here, too. No complaints about the abundance of cheese. The only downside here was how smokey the restaurant was. I assume it was from everyone ordering fajitas or something. If you visit on a Friday night, expect a bit of a wait, but not unbearable. We will be back soon! read more

Loved their food!!! I was blown away right from the beginning when we got complementary chips and Salsa. Their salsa was not bland like other Mexican restaurants. It was full of flavors and spicy. We ordered chicken fajitas and they came with house made tortillas, huge portion of main and side dishes. Everything tastes great. We were there was last week with group of friends. They had multiple games on and decent selection of beers and cocktails. We all had a great time. Definitely will be visiting soon with my entire family !!! read more

Lack of ownership The waitress offered to sell us an expensive gift card. She literally said she was going to charge the current dinner with the gift card we bought (that's something that she voluntarily offered to get us to buy the gift card). She came with 10 receipts (I ignore why), she didn't follow the instructions she was given, and she had overcharged our Credit Card. She lied on our face about the overcharge, and she never took ownership. We asked for the manager who never showed up to the table, and the saddest thing is that even though I kept telling her that was a mistake she made, she tried to confuse us with her stupid 10 receipts. 10 receipts she kept moving on our table that she wasn't able to articulate or explain what or why she literally had all of those receipts, so so stupid. Her LACK OF OWNERSHIP was so stupid, her face reflected maliciousness. All it takes is to take ownership of the mistake and things would have been better with the customer. read more

Stay away from this restaurant! Poor and unfriendly service. Mediocre food. They offer a Yelp check-in deal, but tell you that you have to print it out to redeem. Yelp is a mobile app!!! Moreover, when you activate the deal, there is a countdown clock, so how am I supposed to print it out??? BTW, I normally don't post on Yelp, so for me to add this comment, it means that I really wanted to share my negative experience. Be warned; otherwise, be disappointed!!! read more

Since I moved from Cali the Mexican restaurants here in Utah have really let me down but this one is pretty crazy authentic. Besides our server not being quite on his game (a little frustrating) the food was fantastic. However the chicken in the quesadilla was a bit tough. And I wish they offered chocolate milk for the littles too. Overall we liked it and will definitely be back. read more

What a nice surprise! My wife and I stopped there on whim just wanting to try Los Cucos as we had driven it so many times. We were there on a Tuesday about 4 and the restaurant was not very busy. There was two types of salsa and both were very good. The margaritas were very nice too. We ordered steak frittatas and the smothered burrito that were a little spicy but that was okay with us. Both were very good with rice and beans. Service was great but that may have been because they were not busy. We will go back again soon. read more

Stopped by Los Cucos on a Tuesday night in June for a group date. Quickly got seated. Waitress was great and attentive, but the food...the food, particularly the beef, was not good. I got the Mix Fajitas and my wife got the Los Cucos Salad with beef. The beef looked like thickness of half a sheet cake (cut horizontally) and was some of the worst meat I've had at any restaurant. My wife couldn't eat hers off her salad and I couldn't eat mine from my fajitas. The chicken wasn't awful, and the salsas were decent, but prices are way too steep to have that poor of food quality. It looked like the steak had been smashed by a cleaver to try and soften it, but it was way too chewy, thick and flavorless. I honestly question if it even was beef... I want to like this place and I love Mexican food overall, but skip this joint until they up their food quality. read more

I've been here a handful of times and have consistently felt that the food and service are good but not great. It tends to be heavy on grease. I do really enjoy the two kinds of salsa they bring out with the chips while you order. read more

I think this place is better than your average Mexican restaurant. To be honest, I've only ever had one item there and it's the steak chimichanga. Their steak is VERY VERY good. However, I feel that this restaurant is way too expensive for what it is. read more

I am so glad we came here. I have this life journey of eating as many mixed fajita plates as humanly possible. Los Cucos is one of my top two. Instead of traditional fajitas, I got fajitas a la Poblana. It was fajitas with a white cilantro cream sauce and mushrooms, peppers, onions, beef and chicken. I enjoyed it a lot. I don't eat tortillas so it felt like more of a casserole complete dinner instead of feeling like I'm just eating fajita fillings. My husband got the more traditional mixed fajita plate. He loved them. He says it was really good and one of the best he's had! I only gave 3 stars functionality and maneuverability of the place. I like the atmosphere and they played good music that you could hear and even feel a little bass, but it wasn't loud at all. It had a really good sound system it was fun to listen to. I didn't like the parking. The entire lot was full. Both sides, and all the way east, towards the other businesses. We had to park north, over by the mattress store in another parking lot, on the other side of a fence. Luckily we could walk around the fence along the State Street and get access to the restaurant. The inside was crowded. I didn't like how you couldn't walk around anyone's chairs. Big people, little people, they're all going to have their chairs tucked in or push way out and it got in the way. We had to move our super wobbly table away from another because our chairs were hitting each other. By the time we scoot over, we were in the way of another table. I had to waltz around the room and around chairs and tip toe over purses to get to the bathroom. It was very smokey in the building. The kitchen didn't have a full wall, up to the ceiling. It was more like a room divider. All the smoke from the kitchen is able to escape into the dining area. You could see the blue smoke in the lobby of the front doors, where the sun was shining through. My skin and hair smelled and felt dirty by the time we left. That being said, their menu is large and everything sounds delicious! We are looking forward to our next visit. read more

Nice ambiance and decor the music is tuney and the servers always friendly. The food is consistent in that it's decent Mexican food. The chips were dry but the salsas were good. Overall not a bad place but not a blow my socks off flavortown either. read more

My husband write this. Thought you ought to know!! My wife and I went out for dinner tonight at , Los Cucos in Sandy on 10600 and state street, I never give any reviews on restaurants unless I get great service or shifty service, but today I seen something very fishy going on with their cashing out. Their CC system was down and they were sliding the cards on the old system, keeping a copy and giving you your copy , internet was down, not cool they should have told us before we sat down about the system being down thank God Kimmi Martinez had cash on hand to pay for it otherwise I would have stayed to was dishes . read more

Do not eat here. Service is very poor. Also do not waste your time with any email coupon they send. It's a hoax to get you in to eat. Then when you present the coupon they say mgr just sent out a directive that day that they no longer accept any coupons. My husband and I visited los cucos on Monday after Spending many hours at the dealership buying a car, I am so glad we decided to eat there it was delicious and even when we showed up close to closing time management and our server were so attentive and nice. If I could do anything less than 1 star I would. The drinks on their yelp profile aren't available. We literally left the food and couldn't eat it. The white sangria tasted like a juice. Restaurant was clean, the seating service was not very friendly but our waitress was nice. They were very busy and had a difficult time keeping up with all the tables, we passed on dessert because service took so long. We split a meal and the food was below average for a Mexican restaurant. I would not recommend for dinner. read more

Clean, great food and inviting atmosphere. Good things come to those who wait. After searching through yelp for a Mexican place nearby. We found this place, many legit reviews about the food. We arrived in a Friday night. My husband was a little reserved on trying this place. We walked in and the lobby to outside was packed. We thought this must be a good sign. We squeezed through and the hostess was friendly and attentive considering they were crazy busy. She said it would be a 40 min wait for a party of 5. We waited exactly 40 mins and we were seated. Our waiter was helpful and happy. The food was out of this world!!!! The avocado cream sauce for the chips is a must! The fajitas were amazing. As I believe in being honest and giving full disclosure, I will begin my review of Los Cucos Mexican Cafe in Sandy, UT by letting you know I am a consultant for the restaurant. Because that is the case, I won't spend too much time telling you how wonderful the restaurant is, how hugely vast the menu is, how fresh and delicious the food is, and how good the service is. Instead, I'll get a little more specific. The reason I like Los Cucos' food so much is because I'm gluten-free. The menu has a large amount of meat available - and I LOVE meat. The portion sizes are as huge as my appetite, too. I love the fajitas the most and just order them with corn tortillas to stay gluten-free. Just because there is a lot of meat available doesn't mean they can't serve you a vegetarian meal. Just remember to actually ASK what your options are! The first few times I went to Los Cucos, I talked with the managers and cooks to make sure I understood which menu items were gluten-free. Your server can't read you mind if you have a dietary restriction - ASK your server about your options! Trust me, they're happy to help you find your new favorite meal. The management is wonderful at Los Cucos. After getting back on their feet after a tough management change, the Los Cucos team is stronger than ever. I know he won't mind me mentioning his name in this context, but if you ever have some praise or a complaint to offer during your meal with Los Cucos, ask for Raymond - he'll take care of you! read more

My wife and I occasionally go to Los Cocos for a late afternoon Sunday dinner. We are seniors and don't like to wait for a table. We went last Sunday and I was disappointed. I ordered a beef Chimichanga, but when it was served, the chimi was dry....no brown gravy or cheese on it. I thought the menu said that it was topped by beef gravy (their enchilada sauce) but I assumed that I read it incorrectly. I poured some salsa over it and ate it that way. This should have been caught by the kitchen, or the :runner" who brought our meal to us or our server. Obviously nothing was mentioned. When I got home later, I checked into their website and the Chimichanga should have been topped with the brown gravy. I will go to Los Cocos gain in the near future, and I will definitely mention this to our server. If not for this error I would have given Los Cocos 4 stars. read more

I've been a regular customer for about a year, I always eat in the bar and I have always loved the service and the atmosphere. Last night I had the worst dining experience ever. The new manager has no clue what she's doing, she's has no manners. Last night she was managing, serving tables and bar tending. She couldn't handle it, she was treating customers and employee inappropriately. She was probably short handed because her staff walked out on her after being treated like that. If I was treated like that by my boss, I would walk out and call the labor commission. What happened to Dan and Raymond? They knew how to treat customers, I felt like family, and the portions used to be bigger. I won't be back. I won't support a company that puts a person like that in a position of management and let's them treat the hard working staff like that. read more

On Halloween we were looking for a good Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake, one of my work buddies suggested Los Cucos in Sandy. He told me that the chips and salsa are very good and to try the guacamole prepared fresh at your table. Everything was absolutely excellent. The green salsa is the best ever, Leo prepared the guacamole and told us the Los Cucos history starting out in Houston, Texas and now expanding to Utah. The service is slow, but the food is amazing. Apparently most of the reviewers have never had True Tex-Mex. This restaurant is all over Texas and has amazing food. I've noticed that most people in Utah can't handle anything spicier than black pepper. I was so happy when this place opened up. I don't have to go to the spice-less, bland places that are considered Mexican food here anymore. Their salsa actually tastes like salsa, and not just stewed tomatoes with onions in it. I wanted to give Los Cucos a "shout out." My wife and I have been going here for over a year, in general a couple times a month. During that time we have found a server, a young lady named Flo, who always treats us great and greets us with a big smile. We request her section whenever we visit. She is a breath of fresh air. I have never been a fan of guacamole dips, but the first time I tried it at Los Cucos, I was converted. I was very impressed with the authenticity of their food and the numerous options they offer, and the quality of food it is. The service was excellent and very quick. We were excited to try this restaurant for the first time, but unfortunately had a very unsettling experience. While we were eating chips and salsa, we saw a small rodent run across the floor. We immediately got up and informed the staff member who had seated us, then left the restaurant. I've never encountered anything like this in a dining establishment before. I can just go into my kitchen and have the same food, but friends have convinced me to eat here. Very nice people all around. Customer service was quite swell. They were pretty busy, but I was never forgotten. The person that helped me was Jorge and I think I am planning on eating here again. Try the chile con queso appetizer with the cool chips they give ya. Chicken fajitas are good too! read more

They are ripping you off! For those looking for a Margarita, watchout they will rip you off! If you go in and ask for a margarita with patron tequila , an $11 drink they slip in the house tequila instead to increase profits. Yeah, they got busted for that. Oh and they just were busted for selling to underage drinkers for the third time. Food is pretty good although expensive. read more

Staff was so friendly!! The chilled tomatillo salsa is so good and perfect for someone who doesn't like their salsa super spicy but still wants something very flavorful. The taco salad had a great twist on a recipe that can be replicated so easily. Be sure to try their new Mexican Kiss drink - it's delicious! We just left Los Cucos! We went in to get a togo order and Kyler helped us at the front desk. He was awesome!! He was polite, enthusiastic, cheerful and very attentive. He made sure our order was right and we were taken care of. It's unusual to find someone who understands customer service so well....especially at such a young age. He's a keeper!!!! read more

Great food. But the service was even better. Ask for Jose Vargas to be your server. He is kind, knowledgeable, and professional. Very attentive. He was our server the first time and we've now been back four times holding we would be assigned to one of his tables. We live 90 miles away. Almost every time we pass through we stop. read more

We loved this restaurant! It was our first time going and it was so good. They were busy because of the Real Salt Lake game but several waiters made sure we were taken care of. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the chips and salsa. The parking is a little tight, but the food was so good it really made up for the busy space. read more

Hands down this is the best burrito I have had since I was in Mexico in 2006. Authentic, fresh, and excellent service. I don't understand people writing a review about a food they don't like, when you try something new, of course you risk not liking the food. Los cucos isn't the best "Mexican" restaurant but it also isn't the worst. They have really good chips & salsa and I think the BEST guacamole. They have a girl that comes around with a rolling cart and asks what you'd like in it. It's really fresh. I refuse to eat guacamole from a bag. So that's realllly good! read more

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurant to come with my family, the food is amazing. I get the fajitas, and they have this poblano sauce that I just can't get enough of. Never had a bad meal! Me and my wife love this place. It is hard to find good Mexican food in Utah. This was such a great find! Staff is super nice. Our favorites are the pork carnitas and the Jalapeno poppers. We love their salsa and always buy extra to take home. You wont be disappointed! read more

After living in Houston for 12 years, we were sorry to leave all the great Mexican restaurants behind when returning to Utah. We were SO happy when this Los Cucos opened here. We used to always eat at Los Cucos in Houston. This one doesn't disappoint! Same great menu and service (ask for AJ!) read more
