This is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in Utah. I've eaten here more times than I can count, and the food is consistently incredible. The smothered burrito is the best I've ever had--it's the one thing I crave and keep coming back for. The staff is always friendly, the service is fast, and they make you feel like family every time you walk in. I loved it so much that I even rented out their party room for my birthday, and they did an amazing job taking care of everyone. It's disappointing to see this place not get the recognition it deserves because they've been outstanding every single time I've visited. Ok well I am going to give this place a super high rating for a few reasons. #1 Ambiance this is a complete off the grid what I would call hidden gem Mexican spot. In some cases a hole in the wall no offense but a great find! #2 Service was outstanding! This was a recommendation from a co-worker that has been coming here for over 35 years and this place didn't disappoint! Same owners that have passed this place down and to his comments nothing has changed and he has ordered the same dish for over 30 years. The staff here is amazing! #3 The food was fantastic! I always rate a Mexican spot by their chips and salsa 1st and these chips and 2 kinds of salsa did not disappoint. I had the Al Pastor tacos and only wished I would've take a pic because these tacos were really good and trust me when I say these place doesn't skimp on the portions. I could barely get through the 2 of 3 tacos that came with this dish. I 100% loved my food! #4 It's Utah and finding great Mexican food is hard to find with an atmosphere like this. I am told they have great margarita specials and unfortunately since it was a work lunch couldn't enjoy those but will for sure be back at dinner to try some. Cute spot off Fort Union. There is a private parking lot for the restaurant. Service was incredibly quick. And right as we were seated, we had water, chips and salsa for the table. I loved the fajita trio here. The portion was huge, the dish looked a little messy because it had everything . Shrimp tasted the best, chicken and beef were kinda dry. Beans and rice tasted great, guac was decent. I put these on tortilla and every bite was great. It was a little salty for me so I could only share so much with my young baby. read more

Been going here since I was a kid and the food is always amazing, service is wonderful and the ambiance is great for a filling meal out with the family or friends. I'll be a regular for life. I've never seen so many servers moving so fast and so furiously to make sure that all the customers didn't have a long wait for their food to arrive or get the experience that they came for. It can be a little noisy. There's a lot of kids there. They're having fun, but that's what the whole place is all about is having fun while you eat and hanging out with your family and friends. The food here was absolutely disgusting :( we wish we could get our money back. If we could do less than one star we would. The service was great though, so it's not the server's fault that the "Mexican" food at this restaurant lacks any sort of flavor. Flavorless, cheap, canned, low quality ingredients. It's like taken from a Caucasian family cookbook and I would be surprised if anyone from Mexico was involved in creating these recipes. We both walked out with only a few bites each from our plates and we are very easygoing people but this was just awful. Also, I've never written a food review this bad before but felt like I needed to warn anyone expecting good authentic Mexican food here. This little place is tucked away next to a day care center. You'd almost not notice it, but what??? Palm trees and giant salamander?!? The ambience has a Mexican beach resort feel with murals of popular cities featured on the walls. Seating is quick except for the most busy times- weekend evenings. The restaurant is filled with regulars who the wait staff greets as friends! The menu has several pages filled with popular Mexican food. Unlike some boutique restaurants, you'll find what you're looking for, and enjoy both old and new favorites. The portions are hearty! If you're hungry, dig in! If not, consider sharing an entree. Although I haven't done it yet, the wait staff ensures me that there's no fee to share a plate. The food comes out from the kitchen very hot! If you're hungry, be patient or you won't be tasing your dinner beyond the first bite! One of the things my wife and I have come to appreciate here is the consistency of the food. Post-COVID, many restaurants have struggled to maintain the quality of their food. But here, nearly all of the employees, both in the kitchen and serving, have been at the restaurant for over a decade! So, is the food good? Yes!! Generous helpings of sauce, cheese, rice and beans, and the center of the plate never fails to impress. However, understand that like food here there are different styles of Mexican food- this is not a gourmet restaurant, it's Mexican home cooking! The salsas and vegetables are fresh and freshly prepared. The sauces are spiced and simmered well. The meats are lean and cooked to tender perfection. My wife claims they have the most tender chicken she's had in a Mexican restaurant. I can certainly state that their seafood enchiladas and shredded beef burrito are juicy and tender and very tasty! Some things to know- trust the wait staff to point you to the top dishes, they've been around a while and know what they're talking about. They know what's popular! Also, if you're not a fan of a lot of sauce or cheese, tell the staff, and the kitchen will accommodate you. They are generous in their applications of both! If you're looking for some wholesome classic Mexican food this is an awesome place to go. It's pretty close to our house so we go fairly often. The servers and staff are always so kind and spunky. They're great at taking care of us. We love it. The decor is fun and kinda all over the place which works great for the space. I ordered the large platter to go. The large platter had 2 enchiladas in the bottom of the container, a tostada on top along with 2 tacos. The tacos fell apart from being in the enchilada sauce and the tostada could not be picked up to eat. Such a horrible experience and presentation of a meal. Both their red and green salsas are seriously addictive. I highly recommend the combination plate because you get a little bit of everything. I loved everything on the combination plate. Food is good, small portions for a high price. You have to wait on yourself, which I thought was odd for a restaurant that asks for a tip.

I try not to be overly critical of restaurants that are just trying their best, but La Cocina was exceptionally disappointing. The service was great, the staff attentive and kind, but the food was absolutely terrible. I was brought "vegetarian" fajitas that were greasy and bland, and had pieces of steak mixed in. I got it boxed up to avoid being rude, but promptly threw it away when I got home. No amount of picking around the meat or seasoning with salt and pepper improved the meal. The rice and beans on the side should be outlawed, they were awful. Cancun Cafe and Lone Star Taqueria are just a short drive away and will bring you food that's actually worth your while. read more

Meh! Thought I'd drop by since I've lived in this neighborhood for almost 17 years and hasn't taken the time to try some of the smaller Mexican spots. We usually hit one of the "Iguanas" or "Tre Hombres." For cinco de Mayo we stopped here. It was decorated brightly and nicely. The drinks had no kick and were too sweet. The quesadillas was dry on the outside (could've made it better at home) and a little boring even though we ordered it stuffed. The Mexican rice was mooshy and we left more than half our plates untouched. They asked if we wanted to take it home and we said no thanks. The diced tomatoes were pink and mealy. Shredded iceberg, sliced black olives, and under-ripened tomatoes... the guacamole didn't taste like it was freshly made, maybe squeezed out of a bag. I am sure they pick up a lot of the local, hungry tourists. We will keep trying other local spots. The double doors made it very difficult to get through with a wheelchair, no one, not even staff jumped in to assist on our way in or out. All the seating is in booths, again, mot wheelchair friendly. We ended up blocking the whole aisle and patrons glanced at us as they were forced to take the long way to their own seats, since there was no squeezing past us. read more

The restaurant is old and in need of a serious renovation and remodel. The food is covered in cheese and sauce to make it have taste but fails miserably. Prices on the food are not unreasonable but a Corona beer for $5.99 is more expensive than most fancy clubs and bars. The beer is twice as expensive as it should be. A lot of nice upgrades to this locally owned mexican place off of fort union, up on the east side. Very clean for covid 19. Food is delicious and you cant beat the lunch specials which comes with the best tasting fried rice and beans. My mom loves the Chile rellanos and I get a tostada and cheese enchilada. My family and I have been going here since my mom was a kid. My all time favorite Mexican restaurant, I completely recommend. Celeste, the waitress, has been there for years and is seriously the best! No matter how often or how little we visit she remembers us and she always makes the experience so great! I went to their website and placed an order for delivery. I really didn't understand I was using a third party to get the delivery, shame on me! I got 1 of 2 of the items I ordered. I called the restaurant to see if they could see if the driver still had the other item in his car. They very dismissive and took no responsibility. So I had to call back and ask them who to call and get a number, they gave me a number to call Chow Now. Chow Now was very nice and called door dash to try and find the driver, no luck. I had not idea ordering a delivery on a restaurants website would involve 2 other companies. I found the manager and 1 other person I spoke with at La Cocina to be extremely rude. The food did not seem fresh, the enchilada tasted stale like they used old tortillas to make them. I will not be ordering food for delivery and I will not take out or dine in at La Cocina.
