I used to work in Nortbbrook and this was definitely the best Mexican around, not sure if there are many other places actually. I had the al pastor tacos the first time I went and they were absolutely delicious. I liked to order the special number 3 and the steak tostada really hit the spot. They make it perfectly so it stays together for every single bite. I work and live in Chicago now but if I'm ever in the area again I know where to go to get my Mexican fix. read more

The food was good, different from regular restaurants. Unique selections. We tried the steak huaraches and one plain (no meat) huaraches. Both were pretty tasty. The meat was not dry. The food came fast. We went on Sunday around 5pm. The place was filled already. Servers were nice. When we went in, we didn't know we just find a seat and they come serve us with a menu. Instead we went to the counter, ordered from the menu on the wall and paid at the counter. Next time we will know, we can just sit at the table for a bigger menu to look at lol. This place is one of my coworkers favorites places for good authentic Mexican food. Nothing out of the ordinary, just your typical small family run business. The place has to be good, as one my of coworker is Mexican and I always see other Mexicans eating there. There lunch combo Specials are pretty good, and all under $6.00; one of my favorites is the Sopes and pork Tortas combination. Their king size Steak Burrito is huge and is more than enough for one person. I should know as my co-worker has a big-ass appetite and can always eat more than a regular person, but at this place, he can just barely finish one Burrito. One thing that bothers me about this place in the winter time....It is always freezing in there, and don't even mention going into the bathroom in the back. I swear, they do not put the heat on in the back, especially in the bathroom. I learned my lesson, when I sat on the toilet seat, felt like my touché just sat on a of block ice. My suggestion, go there with a big appetite, a thick sweater on, and avoid the cold bathroom in the winter. read more

Authentic food and super delicious depending on what you order. I absolutely love it. I do NOT recommend tacos however. Chips and salsa are so so I wish they used Milagro. What I can say are super authentic and delicious are the chicken chilaquiles and chicken enchiladas. Driven by this tiny place in a strip mall for years without noticing it. Today some friends and I decided to go get some Mexican food, and this was the first place that came up on Yelp! We came because of the great ratings. When we pulled up I was sure that this place would be bad because it is small and in an odd location. But I was so wrong. This little hole in the wall hidden gem has some amazing and authentic food, and I loved it. I had the beef burrito supreme and was not disappointed! Perfect portions and wrapped well with amazing tasting ingredients. Salsa is super spicy which I love and the staff is so so friendly and attentive. THIS is authentic Mexican food. I would like to be back some day soon to try more things on the menu! read more

Prefer La Taquiza but this place is on my way home from work. It's actually quite difficult to turn into this plaza heading NW from Lake St, had to do a U-turn in the middle of the street. I dont think I will be attempting that again anytime soon this winter being 37+ weeks pregnant unless a very severe burrito craving hits. Husband and I dined in once a couple weeks ago and today I got take out. Service is bare bones, but the people are friendly enough. You get fresh hot chips and salsa when dining in, but none if you take out (unless you purchase). Guac is sold 2 oz, 4 oz, and 8 oz at "market price". When we dined in (late Dec 2014), we got the 4 oz guac and it rang up as $2.50. Price wasn't bad but we totally underestimated how small 4 oz would be. I'd say it's about one of those Chipotle guac containers. The horchata here is very sweet, which I do not like. I have gotten the suizo burrito with steak with red sauce both dine-in and to go. Very nice! Also got beans to go and pretty pleased with the huge portion for $2.25. They accept credit card but be sure to bring some cash for tips, for some reason this restaurant doesn't have a tip line on their credit card receipt but they do have a tip bucket. read more

Very good place to grab some Mexican food when you're in the 'burbs. Most places in the suburbs are more Americanized and more expensive. But if you are looking for authentic Mexican taste, this is the place to go. There was one confusing part about the experience. I couldn't tell if it was a sit-down restaurant or a place you go up and place your order. Turns out, you can do either! They also have great daily deals that can save you some money. Three tacos and a tamale can run you less than 7 dollars on certain days. I've been dining here for the last decade or so--especially while I was working at Discover's HQ Office in Riverwoods! I love the authenticity of the food here (when I walk in here, I'm usually the only non-Hispanic diner, which I LOVE). Also, I LOVE their huge and diverse menu which has a TON of options that the majority of Mexican restaurants don't have! I started out ordering their namesake dish-- the huarache (they're all great)! They basically turn a flattened out, football-shaped pork rind and turn it into a hearty, delicious, culinary objet d'art with different toppings you can choose from--YUM, bitches!! I also LOVE ordering off of their specials menu posted on their wall next to the register stand, which have selections NOT in the regular paper menu--For example, their dishes with mole sauces or the ones that incorporate cactus (nopales), are absolutely deeeelicious and a welcome break from the usual yawner, cookie-cutter taco/burrito/enchilada/nachos me-too menu items that unadventurous Midwestern pinhead suburbanites usually order! read more

We finally got around to trying out Los Huaraches a few days ago. My folks had been here a couple of times and even my neighbors mentioned it to me. Oddly enough, I don't even talk to my neighbors all that often so it's weird that they're recomending a place. The food here was supposed to be pretty good. I logged on to Yelp to see what's what and the original review made mention of something called the 'pambazo' - the description sounded awesome... I'd never had one in my 38 years of being Mexican so naturally my interest was piqued. My wife is a bit of a tortaphile so we were all like "let's check this out!" This place probably does mostly carry-out but they do have a small dining area. I saw they also have some outdoor tables along the side of the building with a nice view of the parking lot but it's too late in the year for that. The waitress came to our table and explained to us what a huarache is. A deep fried corn tortilla with stuff all on top... almost like an open faced sandwich I guess. She explained the pampazo which took some time to find on the menu (hint: it's not on the sit down menu... you'll find it on the carry out menu (on the back - in a little box on the right side)) - they actually have a whole mess of other tortas including a 'combinacion' with cheese, ham, milanesa, etc. etc. That's actually what my wife had. Ok - all the stuff we had was great. If we would've had more room, we would've tried the tamales Oaxaqueños which my parents and neighbors told me about - maybe next time. The sides of rice and beans were kind-of forgettable. Oh... I didn't realize that when you finish you actually need to go to the cash-register to pay... I assumed the waitress would bring the tab. It wasn't her fault that we waited for 30 minutes... live and learn. The guy handling the cash (owner maybe?) told me the pambazo is actually pretty common in 'el DF' aka Mexico City and that the menu here is DFcentric with some Oaxaca stuff too. Who knew Northbrook had such soul. We ordered 2 burritos....steak and a huarache.....AMAZING. We live in Florida and it can be hard to find great Mexican down there. I live in NYC now but everytime I come back home, I make it a point to have a meal here. The ingredients are fresh and the food is spicy. Branch out from the typical dishes and try some of the special menu items, like costillas de puerco en salsa verde or their specialty, los huaraches. They are different from any huarache I've had in New York: they put the beans and meat INSIDE the dough and deep fry it. It is soooo good. I also appreciate that these guys can make the food spicy. I got 2 burritos , 1 taco, 1 tamale , 1 quesadilla. came out to 24 bucks. wow. the portions were very small, left the kids really hungry. The burritos are a OK size, but the rest was really small.
