Went here today for a carry-out order. As a vegan, I appreciate the fact that their rice and beans are vegetarian. I just have to ask for the refried beans with no cheese to make them vegan. I feel like I get a good amount of food for the money here. And the tacos are tasty! Also got guacamole and chips which were delicious. The employee was super nice and helpful with my order. You know the saying 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' well, I've been here many times over the years and every time it's great, so I have a hard time going to other joints for a fear of disappointment. La Taquiza taqueria is a good place to get tasty tacos. On my recent visit there I took advantage of their taco Tuesday special. On Tuesdays, they have tacos for $1.50 and it's a really good deal. You get regular-size tacos with generous portions of the filling of your choice. I ordered their: 1) Asada - grilled skirt steak 2) Bomba - Pork, Ham, Chorizo, Pineapple and salsa 3) Tinga - shredded chicken with chipotle sauce 4) Chorizo y papas - Chorizo and potatoes Tacos They tasted good and the best in the bunch was the Bomba taco followed by the Tinga one. The only thing I didn't do right was not eat them right away. I had done a carry-out for dinner. So, I ate the tacos at a later time in the day which wasn't as fun as eating them fresh. But all that aside, I enjoyed my meal. The Taco Tuesday special is definitely worth it. They also have other specials during the other days of the week. If there's lower than 1 star, that's what I'm going to rate this restaurant. I can't believe what just happened today! The owner (at least that's what she said) was very rude and nasty! I was ordering for to go but decided to just eat in. After being almost done with our meal, I wanted to order to go again and guess what the owner told me... ' if you are going to eat this here again, then you are wasting my bags, etc'. You can't order and say to go and then you will eat it here!' (Mind you this order is really to go that I will bring home to my kids.) I can't believe what I just heard!!! I called her out saying that was rude to say that and she continued to say that it's the truth. 'I am the owner' and just don't order. Wow, just wow! I never expected an owner can be so nasty and act this way, and even raising her voice! To top it all, she didn't let me continue to order and said 'I don't need your business'... Well, you just lost a valued customer and I will make sure to let everyone I know in the area to not patronize this business. Did a quick take out here for the Santana concert at Ravinia. I figured what better way to celebrate and enjoy than with tacos y Santana! I was able to place an order online for pickup. The restaurant is located in downtown Winnetka in a building shared with other businesses. If you don't pay attention, you could also easily pass it up. When I arrived, my order was ready and packaged nicely for transport to Ravinia. The entire time we set up our area, the smell of tacos just permeated from the bag so needless to say, we didn't wait too long before giving in and eating everything. I got the Birria tacos with a side of rice and it was delicious. The consumme even had chunks of meat inside it that I ended up scooping over my side of rice. My brother got the steak tacos and he inhaled it! I had no idea what to expect with this spot but it was on the way so we took a chance and it was worth it! If you are looking for traditional Mexican fast food, La Taquiza is a solid choice. The ingredients they use are high quality and their hot sauce is flavorful. However, based on their menu, lack of flexibility and customer service, I don't come here nearly as often as I otherwise would. Let me explain. I'm a middle-aged guy who needs to really watch my diet. If I consistently make bad food choices, it shows up on my stomach and in my blood work. I try to eat some vegetables at every lunch and dinner and limit my saturated fat and simple carbohydrates. These restrictions narrow my food choices here considerably. Their burrito bowl is generally my safest option, but almost half the ingredients I leave out: cheese, sour cream, and rice, leaving only refried beans, tomatoes, chicken, and guacamole. I asked the owner for their fajita vegetable mix instead of the three ingredients I took off. When I got the bill, it was 30% more than the listed price; she charged me extra for the veggies. On principal, I told her I was unwilling to pay that. She removed the charge and didn't give me the veggies. I really don't care about the extra charge-most of my meals are more expensive-but their menu is very unhealthy and they penalize the customer for making healthy food substitutions that would cost them nothing (they could have reduced the guacamole). Worse still, they forgot my employee's chips and salsa, which I heard her order. When we asked for it, she said they forgot to ring it up (at this point we had our other food). Rather than just give her a 25-cent basket of chips, they wanted to charge her for their mistake. Penny-wise, pound stupid. If you're one of those lucky people who can eat whatever you want without consequence, this place is great; for the rest of us, Chipotle is a better option. read more

No one person gives you service here. The owner is confused about owning a restaurant..... but okay. Someone should post self service here in big bold letters. Food tastes okay; portions were decent. We ate there for half an hour or more and they still did not cover them. We came to try this place out while finishing a Costco run. My friend got a huge burrito and the chicken tamales - they do not offer pork option. I got three tacos and they were big so I couldn't finish them all. Overall flavor was really good, authentic Mexican flavor. They also have Mexican coke and horchata and tamarind juice so they have a wide selection of drinks. Solid, family-run Mexican joint. Two locations. Review is for the Northbrook location on Shermer, just South of Willow. This place is a humble, strip mall storefront that borders on "Dive" in THE BEST possible way. Reliable, friendly service and delicious food in a casual counter-service restaurant. Small dining area seats about 20 with Mexican art-adorned walls and playing card decoupage on the tables. Nearly everything including the horchata and fruit punch is made in-house except chips and some of the candy/desserts at the register. "Bomba" filling is a signature "Los Fillings" (meat) mixture that combines chorizo, pork, ham, and pineapple. Put this on your must-try list. Other meat filling choices: shredded chicken, Tinga chicken (chipotle), carne asada (diced steak with onions), cecina, lengua, milanesa steak or chicken (tortas only), chorizo papa, chicharron, campechano, and three vegetarian options guacamole, rice/beans, and chiles relleno. Call to check on other filling options barrbacoa, cabeza, and arrachera in addition to above-listed. Newer menu additions include nachos, enchiladas, quesabirria (like a taco version of a dipped cheesesteak wrapped in a crunchy shell dipped in au jus), and newer fillings: grilled shrimp and grilled fish (tilapia). These items are additions to the menu classics; tacos, burritos, tortas, flautas, and tostada. The newer shrimp Diablo is incredibly spicy and delicious entrée; not for the faint of heart. Trust me on this: very spicy! You can order a mild version of the shrimp a la plancha, but it's not the devil's heat you could brag about with Diablo. And for those with a hearty appetite, the Megatorta - as big as yo' face - is a ginormous and delicious sandwich. My teens usually split one and have leftovers for breakfast the next day. Oh that Telera bread is soft and a bit sweet and stands up to a pile of fillings! Do yourself a flavor-favor and try a Bomba-anything (tostada, burrito/bowl, Torta, etc). Not to be missed. Tortilla soup is available seasonally, and a good cure for the sniffles or if you miss your granny's/abuela's cooking. Comfort in a bowl with a wee-bit-spicy, deliciously light homemade broth. Tostadas and Burrito Bowls are our family favorites. All meat filling options have been tasty. There are 3 tamales flavors if you want to go old-school comfort food (2 chicken versions and an amazing and flavorful veggie filling with rajas peppers and cheese). These are served a la carte and make a good add-on for soup or other sides. Also spicy and comforting is the elote side dish, with cut corn kernels, mayonnaise, crumbled cheese, and a good sprinkling of spicy chile powder. Each day La Taquiza offers a "special" plate available at a modest discount, with Taco Tuesday street tacos (smaller tortillas, traditional onion-cilantro topping) for less that $2 each. Just picked up dinner and it was terrific! Looks a little plain/run of the mill, as it is inside a strip mall. However, it is a great hidden secret with terrific Mexican food. Great portion sizes, and just overall very good Mexican food. They have all the basics, and we loved the rice, beans and chips and guacamole. There are 2 other locations, and if looks like they have larger menus than this spot. However, this location is convenient, so we will be going back here. La Taquiza was the star of my birthday drive by party!!! They made 100 tacos individually wrapped in foil! We were able to safely hand them out. Not only were these tacos ready to go on Cinco de Mayo / Taco Tuesday, they were also so delicious!! The meat was tender, the tortillas were authentic, and the request for no cilantro was met. Overall just 3.5 stars for me. The star of the show was the creamy guacamole for $3.50! A large bowl - check! And nice large chips. Went for Taco Tuesday, and a chance to shake up our Mexican restaurant options. $1.25 tacos! We had our choice of a couple different tacos written on a board. My kiddos had pre-made burritos (they gave those 2 thumbs up). I ordered two different types of moist and fresh chicken tacos. One was spicy and the other was pretty simple and plain-ish. Topping options were cilantro and onions, so just cilantro for me! I love cilantro. The spicy taco was my favorite between the two. Nothing fancy or special, but the plain was definitely plain. Honestly, nothing very memorable that would make me go out of my way to travel out of my territory, because we have some great taco options in our community, but this stop is a very good option for those in the area. It took about 20 minutes to get our food. Once the tacos were ready they called out our order, and we went to pick it up. People were waiting everywhere! It was pretty insane. The lengua burrito was so tender and delicious, I would come here again for this plus a cup of horchata. La Taquiza is a little storefront strip-mall Mexican restaurant that serves amazing food. It is pretty small inside and can get very very busy at lunch hour, partly thanks to being just down the street from the high school, so I try to pop in there just before it gets slammed. And it gets slammed because the food is amazing!! I tend to stick with the tacos and burritos which they have on special during the week - Taco Tuesday and the Friday special which is a mini-burrito with rice and beans for $6 out the door. My favorite is the chicken tinga for the tacos and burritos and it has a nice kick. Add some of the salsa to make it even hotter if you want to. Their rice and beans are also excellent. They have quesadillas that are tasty too, but I'll always go for a taco or burrito if given the choice. The steak is also good as well. Check this place out and you will be back soon. read more

This is one of favorite restaurants in all of the north shore. It is a go to taqueria which I've been going to for almost 7 years now and the food is always excellent. It is some of the best Mexican food available in the area. Their steak tacos are one of my favorite in the world. The burritos are also massive and delicious. A highlight of coming here are their fresh made salsas, salsa verde and a red salsa as well (the salsa verde is my favorite).
