So I ordered two tres leches and some churros from Los Jefes. Easy pick up, right? I get there, they tell me no tres leches. None at all. But if I wait 10 or 15 minutes they'll make it happen. I said sure, why not, I'm a fair guy, I can wait. Closing time was 8:30 and I showed up around 8:20, so credit to them for actually taking care of the order. Other customers even walked in and they still seated them for service. Tremendous effort. Fifteen minutes go by. I grab the order. I give the tres leches to my wife when I returned to our hotel room. Folks, this tres leches was harder than a rock. Hard, dry, awful. I love tres leches, I've had the best tres leches, beautiful tres leches. This was not it. This tres leches should have been illegal. My wife didn't even bother eating it. That's how bad it was. Total tres leche scam-gate. Now I can't speak for the rest of the food, maybe it's good, maybe it isn't. But what I can tell you, this tres leches was a disgrace. The churros? They were okay. Not great. Just okay. read more

My food was cold when I got it and my order wasn't correct. I had asked for my meal to come without beans, and it did not, so my food was saturated in the bean sauce. The Mexican street corn was cold and soggy, I didn't receive the sour cream I ordered and i only got half a serving of queso. In my opinion, the pricing was decent, had it been better quality, I would have been more impressed, but I sadly won't be ordering from there again. Oh, I wanted to love this place. I really did. Growing up surrounded by taquerias where the mole is a labor of love, al pastor spins majestically on a vertical spit crowned with pineapple slices, and tables come fully equipped with bowls of pickled jalapeños, this spot had a lot to live up to. But I figured, "Hey, homemade tortillas? This could be the one." Let's start with the highlights, shall we? My three tacos tasted pretty good, and those homemade tortillas? Yes, please! And the Margarita--oh, that was solid. I could've happily ordered a couple more of those and forgotten about the rest of the evening entirely. But then... the food happened. Or rather, it didn't. Not for a long, long time. I think my son grew a beard waiting for our dishes. My wife's tostadas were the first (and only) to emerge for what felt like an eternity. She dined alone, like a noblewoman at a medieval feast, picking at her shrimp tostadas that tasted... suspiciously like it had been caught during the Nixon administration. Meanwhile, my son and I sat there, waiting for our meals. Eventually, his enchiladas showed up--just as my wife was polishing off her solo feast. The enchiladas? They were only ok. But those refried beans? Well, let's just say they could double as a cool compress on a hot day. Flavor? Missing in action. Somewhere, a bean cried. Finally--FINALLY--my tacos arrived. They were simple, just like you'd get at a real taqueria, with onions and cilantro. It felt like a win, but after an hour and a half? Even the onions looked tired. Oh, and our server? Bless their heart. They forgot our silverware, botched our order, and misplaced the elote (which we never saw, but were charged for). In the end, we left with full bellies, but not quite full hearts. I would prefer to do minus stars. The food was so very bad very bad. The service was good, the waitress was nice. The noise was overwhelming due to remodeling!!!!. That should have been done during closing time. I sent back the first dish with just one bite and still was charged. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

I ordered the chicken burrito, my wife ordered the chimichangas and our daughter ordered a taco, My daughter's taco came with nothing but cilantro. Problem 1 - My burrito had zero flavor and was missing the "American" ingredients. The black beens were smooshed and was like a paste. Problem 2 - My wife's chimichanga had zero flavor and Parmesan cheese on it. Same black beans. Problem 3 - Bathrooms were disgusting Problem 4 - The waitress insisted everything was in my burrito, once I dug into it, it was missing everything. Problem 6 - We waited an extremely long time just to have our orders completely wrong. Problem 5 - This is my biggest issue, the Chef/owner? Came out and was condescending and talking down to us, insisted that she buys authentic Mexican ingredients and "people" come in who have only experienced Taco Bell and don't like the "authentic" Mexican food. I can deal with terrible food and even waiting a long time. But being talked to like that is unacceptable. Assuming we are uncultured Americans who have only eaten Taco Bell is a terrible assumption. She argued that Texmex was not on their menu, except I ordered what was on the menu and she just talked down to us. read more

We have eaten here multiple times and each time it gets better. The service has improved a lot from the first time over a year ago. The food has always been the best, the Quality, presentation and taste is excellent. Quaint storefront diner on the main strip downtown. Walked in around 7:45 pm on Friday and didn't have a wait. Place fairly busy, only a couple of open tables. Chips and salsa delivered quickly. Chips were thin, crispy, warm and salty! Very tasty! Before no time the chip basket is empty (not sure how that always tends to happen). Salsa was fresh, above average not too heavy on the cilantro which I like. Waitress was busy (the only one working). She had a younger fellow I'm guessing was the manager helping her a little. She was ok, but overlooked obvious signs like empty drink glasses. I ordered the chimichangas with ground beef. They came with rice and beans. The chimis were squarish, like a wider hot pocket. Deep fried, so tough to mess that up you know? The rice however was the standout!! Dee-lish! I would go back and just get a side of rice it was that good! My wife had chicken nachos. They had a little bit of everything on them including black olives (which I thought was different). They were piled high on the plate too, my wife and I could have easily shared them and be full. The chicken was ground which was a little different. Overall they were pretty good. Bill was around $38, sans tip. So for a dinner out that's fairly priced in my opinion. We would go back if we were in the area ( we live 30 miles away), but wouldn't make the drive just to go there. Nice to see Mexican restaurants trickling into VT. read more

The steak taco didn't taste look or like steak. I also ordered the shrimp quesadilla, it came out looking like three tacos. Not much flavor, and the side of queso I ordered tasted like a beer cheese. Authentic Mexican in Vermont is such a luxury and I want this business to stick around for a long time. It tastes like what I would get in Phoenix at any of the small Mexican stands or ​restaurants. They are still new and need to work out a few bugs, but I had no difficulty ordering at the counter. My take out was in my hands in about 10-15 minutes and they were pretty busy. We saw a sign in the window that said TACOS TODAY so we wandered into this new place and had the fun of being the very first customers in their soft opening. Greeted warming and given attentive service, the two dishes that they offered were carnitas and chicken tacos with sweet onions and cilantro on a homemade corn tortilla and accompanied by a tomatillo salsa. Both versions were fresh and tasty. We were also given a little bonus, I think that they were called "Sopes" - the same nice tortilla toasted in a pan with cheese on and sour cream on top, like a quesadilla, but simpler. This preview meal was very good and gives me every expectation that when Los Jefes officially opens it's going to be a new local favorite. read more

I ordered on the phone and it was a bit chaotic when I was trying to order. The young lady told me the food would be ready in five minutes. Twenty minutes later it was just finishing up when I arrived. The service was pleasant. We order pollo tacos, tostadas and flautas. Everything was tasty and fresh but could use a little more seasoning in the pollo. Overall worth a try and will try again, as that they are a new place and still working things out. read more

Consider finding the most authentic food. I can't think of any restaurant besides Los Jefes that brings actual Mexican cuisine to life, unlike my fellow unaccustomed American fellows who have no idea what actual Mexican food is like. Simply put, the food is delicious. When ordering, you can customize your dish in any way you want, but note when you need any extra condiments, you must ask for them. The service is great. The most authentic Mexican food I've had in Vermont! Good Mexican food was seriously lacking in St. Albans and I'm so exited that we have this fantastic restaurant now. It's family owned and operated which is great to see, and the food is fantastic. My mom and I went for lunch on a Saturday around 1 and the restaurant was packed. There was thankfully one table available so we were able to grab that. While we were there, it looked like several people stopped in to pick up takeout as well. I had the choice of any 3 tacos and got the Birria, Pollo, and Al Pastor. All three were delicious. My mom had the Flautas which she said were amazing. We shared chips and salsa which is free if you dine in. The servings were generous and we were both full after our lunch. We will definitely be going back, this is already my top choice for lunch in St. Albans! The service was good as well, there was a bit of a wait because I don't think the wait staff knew we had been seated, but we weren't in a rush. As soon as someone noticed, we were helped. The only things I was left wanting from Los Jefes was queso! I know not all Mexican restaurants offer it but I would love to see it added to the menu as they get more established. I definitely recommend that anyone in the area stop in and try this fantastic new restaurant! read more

lotta gringos on here complaining for no reason. ;-] the food is delicious and the fact it's family/chef-owned and operated makes it even better. obviously "authentic" mexican food varies depending on where you are in mexico, but this is definitely real and worth your time! (unless you're into the tex mex heavy on the deep fried toxic oil type "mexican" "food" - cuz this ain't that.) los jefes is beautiful addition to the community, with a solid and reasonably priced menu. literally everything is good. so glad they are here!!! read more

As a south westerner, the food was pleasant. I got the enchiladas, chips and salsa, tacos, and quesadillas. Although the salsa did not have much spice or flavor, the service was delightful. It also Took a little long for us to get our food. but I was extremely happy to see how fresh the ingredients were. The portions provided were on the smaller side. The enchiladas were very flavorful and had a decent amount of spice. The tacos were fresh and flavorful as well, although they did not have as much spice as expected.
