I was in the mood for a burrito, big like chipotle but from a Mexican restaurant. I've seen los tapatios and I've always wanted to give them a try.I was pretty disappointed, burrito was wrapped poorly, very dry and also a lot smaller than I expected. Too bad for me, the days are gone of lunching with my gal pal over Mexican food. Sadly, she has moved away. Happily, Los Tapatios is still here! We don't have many options in town for Mexican, so this will often satisfy my frequent craving. The dishes are all good, the service is efficient. Just as with Italian, Mexican cuisine varies, too. While this isn't my fav...it suffices in a town short on options. When I come here I always make sure to order a chili relleno, I use the sauce and filling to moisten some of the other drier parts of my meal. Mind you, it's not that the flavors are bad, I'm just used to my Mexican meat fillings being a little saucier. Additionally, I'm not in love with their chili con queso. The first time I had it, it literally looked like a slice of American cheese melted over a couple of slices of jalapeno pepper. I am happy to return on frequent occasions. As Vestal residents, we were excited that a Mexican restaurant opened right near our home. My wife grew up in southern California and we met when I lived in Santa Monica for several years...so I developed a keen appreciation for Mexican food through her and the location. Let me start this review that I spent a large chunk of my formative years in San Antonio, TX... so I feel that I know a few things about what good MexAmerican food should taste like. Unfortunately, that is a commodity with a severe shortage here in Yankeeland (as my father tends to call it). So maybe its nostalgia or just a lack of exposure to Mexican savory tastes... but this place is pretty damn good! They essentially have no competition so its surprising how low the prices are. The food is SO good, the spice is just right, the atmosphere is fantastic... seriously, what is not to love? Actually, I can tell you what... the sopaipillas. They just aren't made the same up here. Don't get me wrong... they are good. But they are just not the flaky, puffy, fresh-baked pastries I remember from my youth (and my more recent visits to family). I highly recommend the chile rellenos with the tamales and anything else. Its all good, just make sure you eat those 2 things. Also the guacamole is authentic. Since Delgado's closed, i'd say this is the best mexican food you can get in the area. I always get the shrimp quesadilla, inexpensive and fills me up so much sometimes i needa take it home (2 meals for the price of one!) I like to go here if i have a big group, service was a bit slow but good, and the staff was pretty nice. beware they charge for refills of chips, we didnt know and when the bill came we were surprised, but the nice waiter took them off the bill and said just remember next time so that was very nice:) read more

THESE PEOPLE ARE SO RUDE WHEN YOU DO DELIVERY!!!! We wanted to order Mexican in and watch television on a Sunday night. When the food arrived the chips and guacamole were not there. We called and they would not refund. They then accused my friends of either dropping it on the way up to the room or hiding it from me. I was with them the whole time, they are also my best friends so why would they hide food from me.... They are so disrespectful for accusing us of stealing food from each other. To add on my food barely filled the whole circle floor of the to go container (you could see the bottom of the tin). They told me they "weighed it" but this weighed less than the tortillas that came with it. I think it is outrageous the way they spoke to us and the situation itself is outrageous. read more

The food here is pretty decent, but the food just doesn't taste... fresh. The complementary chips and salsa were okay, but lacking. The portions are huge (like two meals huge) though. Most of my friends enjoyed their meals also. Service is decent at best. My biggest problem with this place is the amount of fruit flies there is. I would be okay if there were only one or two, but there is just too many. Swatting flies away just takes away from the dining experience. I'm pretty sure that having this many fruit flies in a restaurant is a health hazard, and I'm almost 100% sure that if this restaurant were located in NYC, it would be closed down by the DOH. Beware my review is biased bc we didn't eat here, just stopped in for some margaritas. This is a hole in the wall right off the Binghamton University campus which is the go to spot for margs. They come in huge goblets at $7.25 and they are $5 at happy hour. It's insane that this price can correlate to so strong delicious ginormous margaritas. OMG the food here is FANTASTIC! Authentic Mexican food! From the exterior of the building you want to just keep driving- there were some jokes made about "catching" something there- but after much encouragement and promises of fish bowl margaritas in I went. The feel of the restaurant is fun, the staff has always been attentive and our food always comes out quickly, thats right, I am now a believer in this delicious restaurant! I drive 45 miles each way for this food, they have an amazing selection of vegetarian options and the chips and salsa just keep coming, the guac is awesome and their special last time I went was the crab enchiladas. .. When I say to my boyfriend, "I want salsas..." it translates to, "Let's go to Los Tapatios!". Years ago I had been to the original location in Endicott within months of their opening. I had gone with a friend for lunch and back then they won me over. Their food is great, and their pricing is as good as it gets. Since moving back home, I had noticed that a newer location has opened in Vestal along the parkway. My boyfriend has never been, yet I've raved about their food (and margaritas) from time to time and he had his first experience about a month ago. Their menu is extensive. They have combination selections that vary in items. I'm pescetarian (Vegetarian but eat fish... sounds like a religious sect, I know), so I gravitate to the Vegetarian Combinations (there are no substitutions allowed with their combo dishes). I always end up ordering "Vegetarian 'C'" which is a bean taco, a chalupa and a side of rice and beans... it costs $5.55. It tastes fabulous, and fills you up; I promise. As someone previously mentioned, the salsa is enough of a reason to revisit this restaurant. They're right. Their salsa is absolutely amazing. Okay, amazing doesn't even begin to describe it... You've got to have it. One thing I need to mention, in addition to the greatness of the food, the oustanding salsa (their margaritas are very good as well; stingy on the tequilla they are not); their food is relatively healthy for what we Americans know of "Mexican" cuisine. Yes your enchilada will have sauce on it, but it's not going to be submerged in a mess of liquid to the extent of you not knowing what's on your plate. They use lots of fresh veggies, and their cheese is used in healthy amounts (I'm a cheese-aholic, but the fact that the food is not smothered means that they want you to taste the actual dish, and the cheese is simply a compliment). I prefer them over Del Gados or whatever it's named now, because you are actually able to decipher what it is that's one your plate, and taste each item individually. This place used to be awesome. What happened??? Had a chile relleno, chicken enchilada and guac. I will always love their rice, but the cheese they put on everything? It tasted like Kraft singles. Guac was nothing more than soupy avocado with onions, and the enchilada was just rubbery and sad. And now, so am I. I still enjoy their salsa and chips, the only redeeming factor of this meal. Unfortunately not a good experience tonight. Went for dinner and our service was terrible. Ask for more chips even told him we knew about the charge never brought them. Never even came back to check on us. Finished our drinks never came to see if we needed refills so we ended up putting our glasses at the end of the table and still nothing. So when we went to pay we told them how bad it was and i am guessing it went on death ear as he said customer service is important. Than as far as our meal we understand the extra charge with everything going on but our portion size was half at best. I often find myself jonesing for Mexican or Tex-Mex food. In Binghamton, this can be a problem. But Los Tapatios is an alright place to satisfy that craving, or at least to make it a little less severe. The service is quick and efficient. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! First of all, I never post these things. However, I feel like others should know about my terrible experience. Food = mediocre at best Service = even worse When Mexican food has no taste, it's pretty bad! My order came out wrong, (simple, I ordered chicken and got beef instead). This was at 4:00, there were literally 4 tables to serve (it's not like the mistake was made because they were slammed). I would have had them simply make a new dish to correct the mistake, but the waitress didn't check back with me until I was nearly finished with my entire meal (again, SLOW time of day - no reason to leave me hanging). When I pointed out the error, she blamed the cook and offered to remake it. With no time left, and really no point in eating more tasteless food, I kindly declined. She briskly and insincerely said "sorry!" and walked away. When my check arrived, I expected to see something to compensate the error. Maybe my Coke (over $2) was comped, or part of my meal, or even an offer for free dessert or at least a sincere apology and an enthusiastic "give us another try!" Nothing. Nothing offered or even mentioned for their mistake. Here's the best part. I asked "do you guys not compensate for wrong orders?" She begrudgingly sighed and said "I can take off a dollar." A dollar. Los Tapatios likely keeps business steady because of its proximity to the Binghamton University campus. The short version: Come here for the drinks. The long version: Prices are higher than most area restaurants, whether chain or mom and pop. The frozen pina coladas and margaritas are HUGE and delicious, but at $7.25, they had better be. I ordered a bean burrito, cheese quesadilla, and cheese enchilada off the vegetarian menu. What I received were 3 cheese quesadillas over a bed of refried beans. I know the main difference between a quesadilla and burrito is the shape, but this stuff didn't even have the right fillings inside! And refried beans. Sorry to ruin them for anyone -- but they remind me of puke in every way -- which is why I avoid them! I thought ordering a bean burrito meant I'd get freshly cooked black beans with a bit of cheese. Just so you know where I'm coming from, I lived in Texas for 17years and I just moved back from Coachella, California three months ago. This is the best Mexican food I've had in this area. No, the service is not the level of fine dining but they are VERY obviously passionate about their customers' happiness and I ask for no more. Additionally, we were pleased to be able to offer our positive feedback to a young lady, as we left, who turned out to be the owners' daughter-in-law, if I remember correctly. This is a small, family-owned business run by caring individuals. They offer, both, good TexMex and good authentic Mexican food. And NO, people, not all Mexican food is spicy hot! It's 2017 and I can't believe I'm still hearing this objection to trying something new. Branch out! Get away from the chain restaurants that have stolen character from our neighborhoods. Shop local. Shop small business. Upon completing the questionnaire, I have one thing to add; a little pet peeve of mine. What kind of people leave their homes in search of a dining experience in hopes that a few televisions will be in view once they arrive? Are we that socially handicapped? Worst Mexican food I've ever had. I recently relocated back to this area after living in Denver, CO for almost 20 years, so I was spoiled with some of the finest authentic Mexican food on the planet due to the HUGE Hispanic population in Colorado. To put it bluntly, the food here was horrendous from the start and by the end we couldn't wait to get out of there and will NEVER go back. The free salsa tastes like watered down ketchup with some tomatoes and onions mixed in. The overpriced margaritas tasted like they came from a pre-mixed bottle. My pork carnitas were crusty and dry, and the re-fried beans and rice looked like they came from a can. But what really disturbed me was their version of 'authentic' crispy chile rellenos: they were covered in some type of soggy egg breading that wasn't even close to crispy and covered in the most disturbing 'green sauce' (i asked for chilli verde but was told they have a similar 'green sauce') that was one of the worst things I've ever tasted. This dish was the first time I was ever served something in a restaurant that I described as 'disgusting'. My wife ordered pork tacos and when she opened the taco it looked like someone put the fetus of a pork bird in there. We've consumed hundreds of tacos in our lifetime and have never seen anything like it before. On top of that they nickel & dime you for every little thing including sides of extra salsa/sauces to try and cover up their tasteless food. We paid $2.60 for an extra plate of lettuce & diced tomatoes which consisted of a pound of shredded lettuce and on half of a slice of tomato. I'm so glad they didn't charge us for the annoying 'fruit flies' that were bothering us the entire time. To put it bluntly, there was not an ounce of love in this food. They're just dishing out crap because there aren't any other Mexican restaurants in the area and the majority of people in this area don't know any better. If you notice the majority of positive reviews for this place are for their burritos. Anyone can make a decent burrito. Thank god there is a Chipotle just down the road where you can enjoy a gourmet burrito for a fraction of the cost. Chipotle also has chips and salsa that will blow you away, and for certain the best $4.50 margarita on the planet. I beg of you to avoid this place. GO TO CHIPOTLE!!! read more

Gave this place a try tonight as a colleague and I were in Binghamton for a class, and felt like some Mexican Food before heading home. This place is tucked in a small plaza off Vestal Parkway, and within walking distance from the college. First off, we walked in and waited by the "Please wait to be seated" sign. A couple female employees walked by, gave us a glance, and kept right on walking - no acknowledgement, no greeting. A minute later what I assume was the hostess approached us, and we were seated at a table. We ordered our meals and the food came out rather promptly. The chips and salsa were average. My chimichangas were mediocre - very little flavor. My colleagues meal was again just average. The rice was awful: dry and hard and flavorless. When this was mentioned to the waitress she said "Well they put it in the oven." Who puts rice in the oven? We also asked her for some Diablo sauce. She looked clueless for a couple seconds, and then just stated they didn't have that, and all they had was whatever hot sauce was on the table. Every Mexican restaurant I've been to in the area has Diablo sauce which they will bring you if you ask for it, and usually charge you an extra $1-2. Clearly she was too lazy to go and check with the kitchen and see if it was something they offered. It didn't seem worth it to push the matter. She then disappeared and never returned until we were 2/3 finished with our meals to ask if everything was ok. We never saw her again until sometime after we finished our meals. 2 Star Rating due to the following: 1. Not being acknowledged or greeted as we waited to be seated. It is poor customer service to see people standing by the hostess station, walk by, look at them, and not at least say "hello, someone will be right with you." 2. Fruit flies flying all around our heads, the table, and our food & drinks the whole time we were there. One landed in the salsa, and also in the guacamole on top of chimichanga. Appetite ruined. Meal over. 3. Food lacked flavor, and was just plain average. 4. Service was poor. Waitress was not attentive, and clearly bored with her job. In summary I think the place has potential to offer a much better experience. I can usually always pull out some good points to offer, but I'm struggling with this one other than to say the food came out in a timely manner, and was cheap. The experience was poor from the minute we walked in the door. Needs better management, serious customer service training, and some quality control in the kitchen. Showed up to pick up my take-out order. Stood at the front register without being greeted for several minutes. Walked up to the bar to ask if I should be inquiring about take-out food there. Waitress rolled her eyes and turned away from me without saying anything, before whom I can assume was the manager said she'd meet me over at the front register in a moment. There was confusion about whether they had my take-out order, but finally turned out they did. Got to the car to realize no silverware was included. Went back in, only to be informed that they were out (without so much as an apology). When ordering something that includes enchiladas, that would certainly have been valuable information at some point--on the phone? When picking it up? They would have let me get back to my office without even knowing I had nothing to eat my food with. Food itself was mediocre: edible, but hardly flavorful or exciting. I am from southern CA and the food here reminded me of home. I shouldn't be surprised though because I learned that one of the cooks is from Los Angeles. The salsa is muy bueno and the sauce on my enchilada was amazing. The service could have been a little more attentive though and possibly could have warned me that the plate was hot ouch! They had two locations, one of which was recently remodeled and inexplicably closed a few months later. This location is across from BU, and obviously they don't feel it's worth the money to remodel this place just to cater to the college crowd. I have to say, this place is a dump. Plastic chairs, plywood tables, and completely uninspired Mexican decor. The entrees came out way too fast to be prepared fresh. They obviously have everything precooked, throw it on a dish, pop it under a broiler to melt the cheese, and then cover the entire plate with cheap iceberg shredded lettuce so every dish comes out looking like a salad with sauce on it. The service was okay. Not terribly attentive, but we did get drink refills. They were quick to give us a check though without asking for it. I just feel like this place wants to have a drive thru window and not be bothered with in house customers. Unfortunately there are not a lot of Mexican places in the area, but I can say I highly recommend the Indian Restaurant right next door.
