Reputed to be the best Mexican food in the southern tier. I wouldn't argue. Los Tapatios satisfied our Mexican cravings. The decor might not be anything fancy, but the food is what we were there for. My wife got combo meal #15 (Chile Relleno, Tamale, and chicken Burrito). I got the Taquito Mexicano ( 2 chicken Taquitos, 2 beef). Both were tasty and we plowed through them like nobody's business, washed down with a margarita and bottles of Pacifico. So hands down, best mexican food I've had in the southern tier. And for you BU students, its an easy walk from campus. So definitely check it out. read more

The most authentic Mexican food you'll find in the Southern Tier. I love the free chips and salsa they bring to the table - but be warned, once you start, you can't stop eating them! Luckily, the staff is nice about refilling the chips and salsa again and again. Be prepared for a big, heavy meal that will leave you satisfied and smelling like deep-fryer for days. I want to bring their rating up. We were a big party, and everyone left satisfied. The only problem was no discernible tequila in the margarita. The prices are low and the portions large. I got a chile relleno & tamal combo and it was just fine, and under $10! Dos Equis amber on tap. Ask for the homemade red sauce. I completely agree with most of the other posters, it's delicious, inexpensive, and fast. I work right across the street at the University and I can get in, eat lunch, and get out, all within my 30 minute lunch break. It's by no means gourmet cuisine, but for a quick lunch or dinner its great, and won't break the bank. read more

Fun place with basic, reliable old-school Mexican food in a dated but pleasing room. Would recommend the spinach quesadilla and the "make your own combination" plate that lets you can pick either two or three items. Both come with Mexican rice and beans. The last time (literally the last ever) I was here we waited almost 20 minutes for a seat (and the place was not full, but we seemed to be ignored), we were put in the front corner and apparently forgot about, took about 15 minutes to get a drink, another 10 to get an order placed and then 20+ minutes for the food to arrive. I visited the Vestal location last week with my 2 kids. It was my first (and last!) time there. The first thing I ordered was guacamole (price: $4.00). I received a very small bowl of green slop. It tasted terrible and had the consistency of baby food. It reminded me of that "Wholly Guacamole" stuff you buy in the produce section of a grocery store. After two bites, I sent it back, and requested that the charge be removed from my bill. For my entree, I ordered quesadillas, which were not fantastic but okay. My kids (8 and 3) ordered the mac and cheese off the kids menu It came with rice for a price of $5.90. When it came, it was clearly Kraft. To charge $5.90 for a scoop of Kraft and a scoop of rice is ridiculous. On top of that, all of our drinks (we all had iced tea, mine was in a regular-size cup and the kids' drinks were in smaller "kid-size" cups) cost $2.25. When I ordered the kids' drinks, they didn't even ask me what size cup I wanted. I also ordered a side (2-3 spoonfuls) of sour cream to go with my quesadillas and it was around $2.00. I was absolutely floored when I received my LUNCH bill and it was ~$35. The food was mediocre to bad, and the prices were ridiculous. I have no idea why people are raving about this place. read more

So I'm from Westchester and have spent ample time in NYC. I think I have a good handle on Mexican food. This place is simply okay, the food isn't quit spicy enough, That being said the service is good, it's clean, the staff is friendly. Everything taste pretty fresh, but there isn't anything on the menu that will impress you. If you leave the southern tier, you'll never really think "boy I wish I could go to Los Tapatios right now". Part of it, is I think to appeal to the palate of the area, I don't think to spicy or overly authentic would draw the Binghamton crowd. Let's put it this way...Taco Bell serves better Mexican food. I would not waste your money at Los Tapatios. Our experience started off with what they call a margarita and what I call a large glass filled with sour mix and ice. We both had their steak, chicken and shrimp fajitas which tasted like shoe leather. Their rice and beans were terrible and I'm sure it didn't help that they were ice cold. Service was horrible; servers were extremely pushy at first and then barley came back to our table. Gave this place a try during BU family weekend. We were greeted and seated promptly. The salsa is delicious but the chips were a bit overcooked. We ordered mixed fajitas, one of the carnitas special, and tacos for dinner. Food came promptly. Portions were generous. It was well seasoned and tasted good. Our waiter kept checking on us. The salsa was very spicy and had a unique flavor. A bit watery. The meal came fast and was yummy but definitely a small portion. The margarita on the other hand was pretty large. Once again I wish I could give a place 2.5 stars, because this is one of the middlest middle-of-the-road restaurants I've ever been to. I ate here several years ago, pre-Yelp, and had a terrible experience, so I went back yesterday hoping for redemption (also because my girlfriend loves Mexican food and we've had a terrible time finding a good place in our area). We probably should have taken it as an omen when we walked in and one of the staff was standing in the entryway crying. The most charitable way to describe the service would be "efficient," I guess. We had to wait a few minutes for a table because, as it turned out, the host was busy taking paper towels to the bathroom. When he came back out he didn't bother introducing himself, just raced off toward a table and presumably expected us to follow. After we sat down my girlfriend had to get back up to go get another menu because hers was missing the entire middle section and nobody was around to ask for a new one. We waited for someone to take our orders longer than I expected in a half-empty restaurant, to the point where I asked my girlfriend if we should just leave. The server cleaning the table behind us was quick to tell us that our server was busy but not quick to do anything to help us. Our server turned out to be the same guy who had seated us, who again didn't introduce himself or tell us about any specials or ask if we had any questions or bother with any small talk (that last part I didn't mind; again, efficient), just took our orders and disappeared again. We ordered queso for an appetizer, and it was so runny it didn't really even stick to the chips. Tasted like watered-down milk with salt. I had arroz con pollo, and it was delicious. The watery queso actually worked pretty well to flavor the rice without making it clumpy. My girlfriend got chimichangas and didn't like them at all. The shredded chicken also contained mystery shreds of something unidentifiable (vegetable skin, maybe?), and the whole plate was drowned in that same watery queso and covered in hot shredded lettuce. She said the whole effect was "like chewing on nothing." Our server ended up sending one of the chefs/owners out to talk to us, who assured us that the queso is always that way (ew) and everything was made fresh to order ... which is just not possible. Our food was brought out in under 5 minutes; there's no way it went from raw chicken and rice to a fully seasoned and cooked meal that quickly. My girlfriend called him out on this and he doubled down, insisting that not only was it made fresh, but he had traveled all of North America learning about different variations on Mexican cuisine. (Side note: I asked the chef what Mexican food tasted like in Canada, and he told me "like going to church," which was one of the best lines I'd heard in a long time and probably the truest thing he said in that whole conversation.) The chef ended up comping our meal and giving my girlfriend a leftover t-shirt and tote bag from the previous day's Cinco de Mayo promotion, which I'm pretty sure was a direct response to her threat of a bad Yelp review. There's nothing terribly wrong with Los Tapatios, it just serves inferior food to Margarita's Mexican Grill(which isn't exactly five stars itself) The three item special at Los Tapatios was disappointing, I couldn't make out what each item was supposed to be and they were all coated in white cheese that I didn't like so much. The chimichangas are a lot like Delgado's with that eggroll-like crust around the outside. I'd eat here again and try something not quite as typical as the burrito, since my options for Mexican are limited. I'm no Mexican food snob, but it's strange that I can make more flavorful tacos, nachos, burritos at home than the couple local Mexican restaurants(and I'm an idiot) read more

Great place to stop in for an inexpensive and decent meal. Place is about average inside when compared to other local lower-end restaurants, kind of hokey with cheap furniture. Food is not spectacular cuisine, but for under 6 dollars I can get a meal that is tasty, hot and filling. Always order from the vegetarian selections, only issue is that they seem to use American cheese in everything. Decor was nice, it felt like a servers training location, no personalization, asking how everything is. No drink refill after 15mins to get our drinks. The food was under seasoned, and served Luke warm. I got the enchilada supreme, needless to say I'll be avoiding this place in the future. Very dissapointed from this experience. Save yourself the huge headache of dealing with the rudest waitress on the planet! My fiance and I went for lunch after reading fairly decent reviews. We both had fajitas. There were exactly 2 tables of guests in the entire restaurant, yet, from the moment we arrived, the blond waitress acted like she was extremely put out to have to serve us. My fiance and I both were extremely kind and friendly, trying to make up for her noticeably negative attitude. We ordered our fajitas and I ordered a Negro Modelo. The food was o.k. Nothing at all worthy of a recommendation, especially for over $8.50 on the lunch menu. We ordered extra salsa and the waitress snapped at us that there would be a charge for it. We nicely said that was fine. When the bill came, there was a charge for $5.00. We asked what the charge was for, and again she snapped at us and said it was for the beer. My fiance pointed out that the sign on the bar said Modelo was on special for $2.75. She very rudely said, "You asked for Negro Modelo." My fiance told her that even so, $5.00 for a beer was pretty exorbitant. She again said very, very rudely that I asked for Negro Modelo, not Modelo. I asked to speak to the manager, and the waitress behind the bar told me very rudely that she had just left. Apparently, our waitress was the manager! I asked for the owner's name, and the waitress behind the bar flat out said, "I'm not giving you that information!" She then went outside, found our original waitress and told her my fiancé and I were yelling at her, which was a blatant lie. We have never in our life had such a bad experience and we eat out all the time. Never have we yelled at someone who is serving us. I am a former waitress and restaurant manager and know how hard the hospitality industry is. The caveat came when our original server/manager came back in and asked us what the problem was. We explained that there was a mix-up regarding the beer. She started waving our bill around, walked into the middle of the room and shouted, P*ta M*dre! My fiancé, who happens to be Latin and a PhD student at the nearby university, told her, "Now you are insulting us." This horrible woman then said, I'm going to call the police! What??? Call the police because we disagree with a charge on our bill??? As we were paying our bill at the register, we both told her we would be calling the owners to report our horrible experience. The waitress/manager yelled, "Go ahead, call them. They're my parents!" Obviously no checks and balances whatsoever for her horrible behavior and horrible service. Seriously, do yourself a huge favor and do not give this place a penny of your hard earned money, as they could care less if your dining experience is even minimally pleasant. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. First we walk into what I swear was at least 95 degrees inside the place. HOT. Not very friendly at all. The kitchen workers were coming out of the kitchen being obnoxious and you could clearly see they were making comments towards us...very unappealing. We should have taken our sons advice and gone to the one in Endicott. Our waiter was most likely just as hot as we were or even more so because you could tell it was killing him to be kind. Okay I think you got the point.. the salsa was AWESOME and the cheese sauce was pretty good but I believe it was a powder. My dinner was an enchilada and a taco with rice and beans. The enchilada wasn't very flavorful at all. Very bland which seemed to be the theme through my meal. The rice was pretty good. Before I say I'll NEVER go back I want to try the one in Endicott.
