This past year I've had a thing for purchasing copper jewelry- most bracelets from South Korea, Mexico City, Tijuana and Mt. Charleston. Wondered if anyone ever made copper necklaces. I saw a few vendors that had thick linked chains. I bought the medium $45 length- tax is high in New Orleans. Far cry from dainty but copper is supposed to be good for arthritis and health. Ok let's see.

Congested with wandering tourists, most of the vendors sell items that could be found at any flea market in the country. A lot of the souvenirs and clothing fell way short in reflecting authentic New Orleans craftsmanship. I was hoping for a market more along the lines of Barcelona's La Boqueria with bounties of fresh produce and appetizing edibles, but there was just a row of fast food kiosks beyond the beignets at Cafe du Monde. Without a doubt, the highlight of the market was the strolling groups of musicians randomly playing jazz to enraptured tourists. RELATED - Exploring New Orleans? I'll start with that, because otherwise this venue would be all about takeout. It's bright, open (30' ceiling!), nicely restored, and WELL KEPT. So often food courts are just a wreck--people's leavings everywhere. At St Roch they keep after that. Not only are there decent tables in many sizes, there's a nice marble bar as well. Now as to the food: we got going there for the $1 oysters from 3-5 at the oyster bar. Nice with a beer, and the char-broiled ones are great too. Then we went for the brisket sandwich special the charcuterie place was having for lunchtime-yuuum, and the owner couldn't be nicer. We've heard good things about the Cuban place too, so that's on the list. There's a fun Burmese place as well, and a poke/sushi place I mean to try. Also Bahamian. The places vary of course in the level of service, but the ones I've described are really nice. All in all it's a great addition to the neighborhood; worth finding out what clicks for you because it becomes a pleasant habit.

It's a one stop shop for your taste buds to travel Latin America- no passport or cash needed. They had food vendors from Mexico all the way to the Dominican Republic. We tried shakes from Honduras- we picked strawberry and guyabano. Both flavors were delicious and cooled us down. Next we got carne asada arepas from Colombia, the meat was seasoned so well and it was oozing with cheese. We played it safe and got tacos from the Mexican spot. They were delicious! The tortillas were freshly pressed and the meat was loaded. They also give you a red salsa and green. I wish we would've left room for dessert because there were some good looking dessert options. I will definitely be back! If you do stop by, bring your appetite and athleisure wear (it's hot and you will leave with a full belly).

The food court offered mostly Latin/South American options. I really wanted some french fries but could not find any. For a nice Saturday afternoon, I wanted to see more of the vendors open for business. I do like the fixed structure of the flea market versus the typical mobile structure you usually see.

I'm sure I'm leaving something out, but you get the drift. Obviously the selection changes every week, but you get to know your favs. Parking is generally available, though you may have to drive around or walk a block or two - at least it's free on weekends. Bank to get cash is close by, but most vendors take Venmo now; some take credit cards. You've got to get out of bed - might as well make the morning a good experience. :)

They have some freshly prepared food you can order and eat here and then other things that are packaged you can eat now or later. There are also many arts and crafts to enjoy and then an interesting selection of various other books, crafts and knickknacks. It does seem to be pretty variable here as I've been here when they had lots of amazing things and other times where the selection was blah. I've enjoyed some great live music here and then just had pretty blah times. The good news is this market is located right in downtown Gretna so there are lots of good options to eat and drink at in the area so if you arrive on a less than optimal market day there is still plenty to keep you occupied.
