Ohhhhh snap. This place absolutely slaps!!…read more If you are looking for southern Creole soul food that actually understands the assignment and did the homework, this is the place. No notes. Standing ovation. First things first, do not be a chicken. Yes, it is outside the tourist bubble. Yes, you might clutch your pearls for a second on the drive. Relax. We felt completely safe, and it is a short ride from the French Quarter. The only thing in danger here is your belt notch! The atmosphere is exactly what a soul food kitchen should be. Cafeteria line moving with purpose. Staff smiling like they know something you do not yet know. Portions so generous they feel personal. And just enough grease permanently bonded to the surfaces to let you know the food is about to be correct. Now the food. Lord help me. This is not food you politely eat. This is food with soul. The kind of soul that makes you want to slap your mamma, then immediately apologize and say damnit three times while chewing. Every bite tastes like somebody's auntie took offense to the idea of under seasoning. Just look at the plates. It was heaven served in a clamshell. No garnish. No nonsense. Just pure comfort. If you grew up in the South, this will feel like home. If you are from the North and curious what southern comfort food actually tastes like, practice your "Hey, Yall" in the mirror and commit fully for lunch. One warning. They sell food until it is gone. When it is gone, it is gone! So if you want that heavy mac and cheese energy, you better show up early and hungry. Final takeaway. We went in for lunch. I left happy, full, and slightly greasy, with the overwhelming urge to take a nap and call someone I love. She didn't answer so I regulated my emotions with a piece of cake from the girl in the corner - you'll see when you arrive. So don't skip dessert!!

Sigh. Disclaimer: the food just isn't the same anymore…read more My parents live on the Westbank, so whenever I come home to visit and stay more than a few days, I always make a stop here, specifically for their stewed okra on Tuesdays. I hadn't eaten here in over a year, but two years ago that okra SMACKED. It was so good I had to stop myself from eating the entire container in one sitting. This time, though, it tasted completely different. Honestly, I mostly picked over it. It did have a decent amount of seasoning meat in it, which I appreciated, but the flavor was just off. My mother agreed. I also ordered the stuffed catfish, and unfortunately the catfish tasted almost entirely like blackened seasoning and nothing else. It used to have much more flavor and balance than that. The yams were fine, and the seafood dressing tasted the same as usual, but I was really disappointed because the okra was always the star of the show for me. Since that's no longer hitting the same, I honestly won't be back. And mind you, this was after standing in line for ~90 minutes. I will say the workers still have that Southern hospitality, and the customer service itself was pleasant. But while standing in line and watching the workflow, it was easy to think of multiple ways the business could improve efficiency. I'm honestly surprised those issues haven't been addressed yet. If you want to go for the experience, then sure, go for it. But don't expect to be blown away. For me, the wait time, prices, and food quality just didn't live up to the hype anymore.

First night I got in I went to Mothers. Someone online had told me about it. I immediately wanted…read moreto get started on eating some traditional southern dishes. I ordered the gumbo and greens. Soooooo good! No complaints. I went back another day because I figured if dinner is that good breakfast must be as well. There was one thing on my plate I just couldn't eat. The look of it was so unappealing and unappetizing I took two bites and couldn't eat anymore. The breakfast sausage. I have lived down south and ordered breakfast sausage but have never seen anything like this. The service was good here as well. I was greeted both times at the door by super polite people who were very welcoming. I also loved the decor. All the pictures of past customers and military members gave it that mother's place feel. Like they love the community just as much as the community loves them. Very nice to see and feel in days where cold chain food places have taken over.

Ain't no way this is the "world's best ham"! Can't be! I ordered fried ham to go, but was given…read morebaked ham. I ordered the ham plate with 3 sides; cabbage, red beans and rice, and turnip greens. Let's start with the ham, it was in fact not fried, but baked. They were out of the "black"/blackened? Ham, so that was a bummer. The guy at the register explained what the fried vs baked ham was, which I knew what baked ham was, fried ham I wasn't sure. It is a thick piece of ham ( like ham steak) and pan fried from the description provided. This is totally my fault for thinking they were serving "fried ham" prior to my arrival. It is basically the thick country ham you get at C. Barrel from the way it was described. So I figured I'd order it anyway, but I guess the ham gods had other plans for me and baked ham it was for me. The baked ham is just that...ham. There is nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing amazing or world's best about this ham. My ham and my mom's ham we bake at Thanksgiving is better than this. It tastes like ham....thats it. Just ham! The sides were bland. Red beans and rice, no flavor, greens were ok, but nothing to give this review an extra star, the cabbage was tasteless. Louisiana hot sauce made an appearance for the sides and still was a let down. As I was eating I was wondering if I had the "C" word cause how in the Hades are ALL the sides bland, lacking a pinch of salt, pepper, onion powder or something?! They did put ham in the sides . Yall, I also ordered sausage, a brownie, crawfish etoufee and a biscuit. The brownie I ate a piece in the car and figured the rest of the meal would be top notch. Sadly I was tricked! I stopped to get ice for my lovely dinner, placed it gently in the cooler over ice and drove 7 hours back home, just knowing I had picked an amazing dinner to end my trip to New Orleans. The brownie is delicious, so that will up the star rating, the sausage has a nice snap, so another star. The biscuit is huge, a bit dry, but at this point my expectations are pretty low. Crawfish etoufee I put in the fridge and will try it later. Once again, no high hopes for that either. And no I don't think the food would have been better had I eaten there. The same bland sides and basic ham is what was being served in the restaurant. Ambience...none. It is in an old warehouse style building and it is set up cafeteria style. You order and pay at the register, your food is packed up and handed to you once they are done( on to go orders). I don't know how this place received such great reviews and THEY ARE SELLING ITEMS ON GOLD "STOMACH"! Some of you will catch that at the end of the day, if not just goggle Mother's delivery nationwide. If I am in New Orleans again I will stop by for a brownie and THAT'S IT! If you haven't tried this place out, go for yourself and you may just fall in love with the place. Give them a try if in the area....

I decided to stop in and grab a small Crawfish Stew and Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce for my post workout reward (Don't judge me lol). It was on from the first bite. That stew and bread pudding had me dancing. I immediately told my coworkers about it that night! The very next day, we ordered lunch here and I got the Bell Pepper plate with Crawfish Stew and it comes with a dessert. Today's dessert was Apple Pie and I took my coworker's cornbread. The bell pepper was not boiled enough to break with the fork and not seasoned enough to my liking, but it was still very good. The crawfish stew was the star of the show! Seasoned well and full of crawfish, potatoes, and smoked sausage. The Apple pie was so delicious, all it was missing was a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The corn bread was very dry, it definitely needed some honey and butter. Now I will add, the lady who took my order today was not the best over the phone. She could not give me my total, and could not tell me what the dessert of the day was, and even hung up in my face. But, in person, she was much better. Also, be ready for at least a 30 minute wait. This is not fast food, it is home cooking! Overall, this is a super cheap spot to get a lot of food. The pepper plate was $18 with taxes. Perfect for that home cooked meal you've been craving when you don't want to do the cooking. I'm going back to try more items!
