I'll take it every time! I also ordered the jumbo shrimp platter, and it was plentiful and very well seasoned. The sides weren't my favorite, but the sweet potatoes were definitely a winner. The vibe was another highlight. The lively atmosphere was another winner for me. I loved the R&b music, and the service was great. Overall, Willie Mae's is definitely a spot I'd recommend, especially if you're craving a good bowl of gumbo!

Caleb our server was great and made some good recommendations since it was our first time. Now...let's get to the food & drinks Taste of New Orleans 1/4 chicken - white meat with green beans, yams & Mac and cheese 6/10: the breading on the chicken was light and airy- almost tempura like. But on my breast there was more breading than meat. The green beans had good flavor but too many onions for my liking. The yams were sweet and had a nice flavor to them. The Mac and cheese was alright, nothing special in my opinion. I wasn't a fan of the cornbread, it was a little dry to me. Sitting on the front porch 8/10: nice portion size and the overall flavor was really good. Gumbo 9/10: excellent flavor and lots of seafood. Just really good overall. I would get it again. Peach cobbler 8/10: get flavor crust was very crispy. The peach to crust ratio was decent I did get the ice cream on the side and that was pretty good. Catfish taste of New Orleans with butter beans, green beans and Mac and cheese 7/10: Good flavor on everything and the catfish was fried hard how they like it. Not a fan that there was more beans than rice in the butter beans with rice. Chicken and watermelon tini 10/10: flavor was really good and surprisingly it didn't taste like chicken.

When I want a bite and don't want to cook (rarely) and I'm in town I will stop and get a bite to eat bc I will be satisfied. It is definitely a vibe and of course the service is great. I love coming home (in town) and interacting with my people . There's nothing like my New Orleans people. As long as this place is around we will visit when we are in town.

Sigh. Disclaimer: the food just isn't the same anymore…read more My parents live on the Westbank, so whenever I come home to visit and stay more than a few days, I always make a stop here, specifically for their stewed okra on Tuesdays. I hadn't eaten here in over a year, but two years ago that okra SMACKED. It was so good I had to stop myself from eating the entire container in one sitting. This time, though, it tasted completely different. Honestly, I mostly picked over it. It did have a decent amount of seasoning meat in it, which I appreciated, but the flavor was just off. My mother agreed. I also ordered the stuffed catfish, and unfortunately the catfish tasted almost entirely like blackened seasoning and nothing else. It used to have much more flavor and balance than that. The yams were fine, and the seafood dressing tasted the same as usual, but I was really disappointed because the okra was always the star of the show for me. Since that's no longer hitting the same, I honestly won't be back. And mind you, this was after standing in line for ~90 minutes. I will say the workers still have that Southern hospitality, and the customer service itself was pleasant. But while standing in line and watching the workflow, it was easy to think of multiple ways the business could improve efficiency. I'm honestly surprised those issues haven't been addressed yet. If you want to go for the experience, then sure, go for it. But don't expect to be blown away. For me, the wait time, prices, and food quality just didn't live up to the hype anymore.

I decided to stop in and grab a small Crawfish Stew and Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce for my post workout reward (Don't judge me lol). It was on from the first bite. That stew and bread pudding had me dancing. I immediately told my coworkers about it that night! The very next day, we ordered lunch here and I got the Bell Pepper plate with Crawfish Stew and it comes with a dessert. Today's dessert was Apple Pie and I took my coworker's cornbread. The bell pepper was not boiled enough to break with the fork and not seasoned enough to my liking, but it was still very good. The crawfish stew was the star of the show! Seasoned well and full of crawfish, potatoes, and smoked sausage. The Apple pie was so delicious, all it was missing was a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The corn bread was very dry, it definitely needed some honey and butter. Now I will add, the lady who took my order today was not the best over the phone. She could not give me my total, and could not tell me what the dessert of the day was, and even hung up in my face. But, in person, she was much better. Also, be ready for at least a 30 minute wait. This is not fast food, it is home cooking! Overall, this is a super cheap spot to get a lot of food. The pepper plate was $18 with taxes. Perfect for that home cooked meal you've been craving when you don't want to do the cooking. I'm going back to try more items!

The fried chicken was the star--served hot and fresh, perfectly crispy on the outside, and incredibly juicy on the inside. Just good, classic Southern fried chicken done right. The sides were great, but the fried green tomatoes are a MUST. They were fresh, crispy, flavorful, and had the perfect crunch without being greasy. This was also my first time ever trying chess pie, and WOW! It was absolutely to die for--rich, sweet, buttery, and the perfect ending to the meal. The service was friendly and welcoming, and everything came out fresh. Sometimes the best food spots are the ones you just happen to stumble upon.
