During our recent trip to Chicago, we needed a spot near Oak Park where we could get a table for seven, without much notice, and food my kids would eat. Lou Malnati's was perfect for this. We only had to wait about 15 minutes before we were seated in the enclosed front patio. And these deep-dish pizzas were great. We got a pepperoni and sausage deep dish as well as The Lou, made with spinach, mushrooms and sliced Roma tomatoes covered with three cheeses. We also ordered a thin crust pizza for the kids. First off, this is NOT a knock on the pizza. We ordered 2 of their deep dish options and they were excellent. The issues were all service related. We made a reservation and placed our pizza order while in route to the restaurant via the L, knowing that the deep dish pizzas take a while to prepare. We did arrive a few minutes early for our reservation, so they weren't promptly ready to seat us, but not a huge deal as it was understandable. It is a large space between their main dining area, bar area, and front room which appears it could have garage door like windows possibly opened for a nice weather day. They seated us in the front space, which seemed to magnify the volume of the conversations as it was enclosed on this evening. It was maybe a little more than half filled at this point. When our server came to take our order, we shared that we had already placed our order. He then left to verify and was gone for a bit. When he returned, he asked for the name on the order and the spelling of her name. He then verified our order with her, although it was apparently more like she was placing our order in retrospect. Our server did bring plates about 25+ minutes in and then a little table beside our table to set the pizzas on for when he would dish them up about 5 minutes later, but this was all more of a tease as the pizzas didn't arrive until we had been seated for about 40 minutes or so. Knowing that they dropped the ball on our order, our server seemed to be avoiding us for most of our time, not even offering to refill beverages. Again, pizzas were very good. Maybe there was a mistake made or they don't actually take over the phone pre-orders for folks coming in. Perfection, as always! Nothing compares to Lou's classic deep dish with sausage and extra cheese! First time at this location and it has a great vibe with friendly and attentive staff. This will be a fairly short review; I was in Chicago for the Frank Lloyd Wright Plus tour in Oak Park, so after finishing the tour I wanted to get a deep dish pizza before I headed out of town. Reviews of Lou Malnati's were good so I ordered a pizza to go using the website. Lou Malnati's Oak Park is located on the main drag of Lake Street near to Unity Temple; the restaurant is cool looking inside, very retro, dark and industrial. The takeout is located all the way in the back, by the parking lot, my pizza was ready and I got dried peppers and cheese along with a plate. On the way to my car I grabbed a seat at a bench nearby and enjoyed the pizza. I got a small the "Lou", a deep dish with spinach, mushrooms, garlic and tomato slices. The pie was delicious, the crust was good and the toppings and cheese were excellent. I ate about 1/4 of the pie before hitting the road and finished off the rest over the next couple days and actually enjoyed it even more since I liked the more well done version when I reheated the pizza. I really enjoyed the "Lou", an excellent version of a vegetarian deep dish pizza. a strong recommendation for Lou Malnati's. read more

We tried Malnati's Pizzeria while in Chicago. The food, atmosphere and the servers were great. The pizza was deep dish with a great buttery crust. We ordered the Lou with Sausage. All was good but our server brought us the wrong order. Someone else ordered a small Lou's special without sausage and the pizza looked similar. All was good the manager came out quickly and explained the mix up. Both tables got there orders corrected and we cost of the small pizzas was removed. Thank you for making this right!!! read more

Despite that I usually go to the original in lincolnwood I was just too tired to drive that far. I have been to the Oak Park location and it's decent if not good. One thing I noticed for like the carryout locations for Lou malnati's the crust of the Chicago classic feels like you're eating a pretzel with butter. Hopefully Oak Park doesn't fail to do that despite being a newer location cuz they say it's the equipment similar to a cast iron frying pan where they say it gets better with age on the equipment they used to making the delicious buttery Pizza. Service was pretty friendly and quick. Ambience in this place is a lot more modern than feeling like a sports bar like at the one in Lincolnwood. Again I did not want to drive there despite that I like eating at the one in lincolnwood since I came from work but it was a tough choice between polish buffet and Lou malnati's but didn't want to travel all the way to Lincolnwood. This was closer to home however I did notice a difference for the Chicago classic here. You see when they put the sausage patties it's a lot bigger in the pizza. Stopped by, since I wanted to try Chicago style pizza...this being my 1st time in Chicago, and this restaurant was just down the street from my hotel. Came in with my friend and asked for a table for 2. The place was not busy, but not empty either. Our greeter told us it would be about 5 minutes for a place on the patio. While we are standing there, a lady walks in from the street and sits down on the patio at an open table. I look at the greeter, and asked "was that table for us?". Embarrassed, she led us to another table. At this point, just funny. We sit down and our waiter gets our order for a glass of wine, a soda, a deep dish pizza, and a Malnati's salad. We're told it will be about 30 minutes for the pizza, which we expected. Waiter comes back about 5 minutes later and says they're out of the wine. We pick another. No soda yet. No napkins or silverware on the table. Soda and wine arrive about 5 minutes later. We're ok with the wait, as we're catching up. 30 minutes later (total of 40 after order), we're told our pizza will be out in a few minutes. We ask about the salad, as well as napkins and silverware. He goes back to check. 10 minutes later, the pizza comes out. We ask again about the salad, and are told "they lost the order". Wow...thanks for checking on our order that we made 50 minutes ago...great customer service! Oh, and no napkins or silverware. He leaves the pizza sitting there next to the table, and goes back towards the kitchen. After a few minutes, my friend gets up and goes back to the kitchen to get plates and silverware. She came back with both right after our waiter returned with plates and napkins (but no silverware). My soda had run out about 20 minutes before, with no check back to refill. I asked for one when the pizza arrived, and it came a few minutes later. No more rechecks, and after we finish eating and are ready to leave, we flag him down and ask for the check and 2 boxes, so we can split up the remaining pizza to each take home. Comes back with 1 box a few minutes later, and (not very carefully) dumps the pizza into the box. Hands us the check. We look it over to make sure the salad is not on there. Sorry for our waiter, but the tip was $0. My friend said it's the worst service she's ever had. I've had worse, but this was not far away. Oh, yeah, the pizza was pretty good, BTW. So sad the whole experience was not up to expectations. 2 stars because of the pizza, otherwise 1 star for the performance. read more

My wife and I stopped in after a long day of work after smelling a fresh pie I knew what I needed to eat. I was craving the thin crust, pepperoni. The wait was a little long but how could it not be with the game on and that aroma filling the air. We came in a little after opening time, 11:30am, on a Tuesday. The server was attentive. We had a small cheese/pepperoni deep dish and small black olives/bell peppers deep dish. The small is, I think, the perfect size for good portion size and 1 piece leftover. All the toppings and tomato sauce tasted fresh and delicious. They place it self is pretty big, cool décor and comfy booths. It def. has a franchise feel to it. Nothing disappointing about this place, but I prefer moms and pops spots. Visiting Lou's is a tradition for us when we attend a Blackhawks game in Chicago. However, we usually go to the Randolph street location. Oak Park was along our route this time so we decided to try here instead. We called ahead (over an hour) for our confirmed reservation so our pizza would be hot and ready when we arrived as we have done before. The restaurant appears clean and well decorated but this location is clearly understaffed. When we arrived, there was nobody at the hostess stand and when one of the wait staff came over to us we told her we had ordered ahead and were seated. Once seated, we waited were given menus and water and then waited 15 minutes before anyone returned. When our server arrived, he did not know we had ordered ahead. He did not take our drink order and went to check on our pre-order. After several minutes he came back and confirmed they had the order. He took our drink order and went to prepare it at the bar himself. We received our drinks but still waited almost 45 minutes for our pizza and when it arrived it was only warm. We were never asked if we needed more drinks or water. I asked for the bill right away as we had already been there an hour and had just received our pizza. The pizza was ok but not what we were used to. Our server was friendly and was trying. But I think he was over tasked. I would not return to this location again. Exactly what you expect from this place, chicago-style deep-dish that takes a little longer to cook but well worth it to get that buttery crisp crust and perfectly non-sweet red sauce over a mound of mozzarella, parm and toppings, our birthday group ordered a 'Classic', a 'Lou' and a thin crust pepperoni and all were perfectly cooked. The craft beer selections were somewhat limited for a couple of us, but 2 of our party had some of the coldest and tastiest Italian pilsners in a while. And at least our server was well-versed in the options we had. With glass and/or open air making up the front room (as well as the adjoining sidewalk patio for that matter) we were plenty comfortable on a nice summer afternoon and especially given the size of our party, the service was pretty accommodating, including a birthday cupcake! That said, unless we find a better way/place to park and until they figure out how to cook a deep dish faster, it's hard to go more than 4-stars read more

I know this one is an unpopular rating but I gotta go off my personal experience here. The restaurant was pretty empty with basically just the front room and patio area being seated with a few people at the bar but yet we were told there would be a 30 minute wait. Thankfully we did get seated before that because really there was no reason for that. We were in the front area with the others and there were 4 servers for the 7 tables but yet our server was hard to ever find after we ordered our pizza (other than to bring it)... sure we weren't thirsty or wanted refills. So I will say that though you can add on any topping they offer to your pizza I was surprised of the lack of signature dishes they offered. They do have a few but I guess from all the word of mouth I've heard over the years I was expecting more from our visit. The most difficult thing about our pizza was that the bottom of the crust was extremely overcooked and we could barely get our knifes through it. I started to just use my fork and would pull softer crust and toppings away and left the hard crust. Even Ben mentioned it being just a bit too much. Also, management at this location really needs to step up in the leadership role. When an unwanted guest came in and was bothering 5 out of the 7 tables she did not come out and ask them to leave herself. She stood at the doorway between the areas and directed the server to tell him to leave. Everyone saw what was going on and from the faces I could see, many were uncomfortable. I hope they sat down with all the staff members and discussed the situation as 3 servers just passed by the unwelcomed guest bothering tables and did nothing, absolutely nothing. A seated guest had to get up and go tell the hostess to get some help. I understand that can be uncomfortable for employees to have to be confronted with but they could have at the very least let management know what was going on and not leave it to a guest to get up from their meal to do so. read more

Food has always been good not a problem, on Sunday we arrived at 8:30pm. No host, waiting for a table, place was at 50% capacity. When attended told them party of 6, when they were 2 available tables, but it seems they were trying to see who could serve us. Staff seemed really tired, made us feel like they were doing us a favor to get us seated when they still had 1.5 hours left. Once seated we ordered immediately and waited about 40 min for pizza. That's ok, I did notice another group of 6 arrive at 9:06pm. The group left after server told them dine in was closed. Again no host. Food was great, they just need a manager and host on site. We should be welcoming especially if they want repeat customers. I asked server for another beer after 15 minutes of him no where around and was brought beer without the orange peel, asked him for the peel, his response was they have a new bartender.
