Why such low stars? Every time I come here, the staff is super friendly. Parking lot is big. The location is divided between adoption center and business center. We came to make donations on a regular basis when we had dogs. Now that we are without these sweet pets, our visits are rare. We have come in occasion to visit the adoptable dogs. A great Animal Shelter! Modern and roomy facility with a knowledgeable and friendly staff. I adopted a Kitten there today and my application was processed promptly and professionally. I was given printed information about my kitten, medical records and received advice on how to welcome the kitten in his new environment, verbally and in writing. The adopting fee was reasonable ($150) and while I was there, someone returned a pet that was not suited for them (they said) and the whole event was promptly handled without any drama. The area where the cats were held was clean and had natural light. The animals I saw seemed relaxed and were playing happily. I totally recommend this facility. I'll give it that the shelter is very clean, the staff is friendly and the process for adopting was super quick. It is getting 2 - stars based on my experience with the kitten I adopted from them. They told me they would have a vet evaluate him before we adopted him (his third eyelids were up in both eyes). From their findings, they told us that he had a URI (very common in kittens). Regardless, they sent us home with meds and told us to follow up with a vet the next week. I had to sign a waiver stating I understood that he had that. When I asked about it clearing up they said it should clear up in a week/his eyelids should go down. When I called to make an appointment with a vet (the next day) to schedule an appointment for the following week, TWO different vets asked me if he had eyedrops. I said no and they told me I should call back the shelter and ask about eyedrops for his third eyelids. When I called back - the lady at the desk was very rude. I had the kitten for less than 24 hours at that point and all I wanted to know was if maybe we could get eyedrops/told her that two different vets mentioned it - to which the lady at the desk said "you signed a waiver". I understood I signed a waiver - I was just asking to see if it was something that was missing with his medication or overlooked. She told me "I would go ahead and make that appointment with a vet". Like ?????? you are missing the point here.+++++++ Follow up - went to a vet a week later, who told us to stop giving him the meds the shelter gave us immediately and informed us that our kitten has the WORST ear mites she has ever seen in both ears. What I don't understand is how you don't catch that when they did their "evaluation on him", or better yet why they didn't add that to his list of conditions or give us something to help treat him with it -- and for that, they get 2 stars. I believe they do a great job helping out getting pets adopted, but it does make me question the vet at the location. read more

Today I went in with 2 rats that I was looking to surrender. I had previously emailed them about surrendering them and they told me I had to be 18. No problem. I brought my friends dad with me so we could legally give the rats away or whatever. When we get there, my friend and her dad are met with April working at the front desk. She is immediately condescending and rude and speaking to them like children. April is accusing my friend of "not wanting" the rats when that is not the case. We were not able to house the rats anymore, hence why we were surrendering them. April then asks for me to come inside since I filled out the forms. I come in and she is essentially calling me stupid for not following their directions to a T. She continuously looked me up and down and spoke to me like I was an idiot. Incredibly unprofessional and rude. They obviously do not care about their animals if this is how they treat people who are trying to help/adopt other animals. Do better. read more

I trapped what I thought were two feral cats with no collars or tags that were killing bluebirds close to our house (have photos). They ambushed them when they came to drink from puddles in front of the house. I take the first cat to the Loudoun Animal Shelter and give it to a lady named Nicole working behind the counter. Nicole said I am required by law to give my name and address for their records and asked to see my driver's license as proof. She recorded my information in a black log book and then proceeded to lecture me about trapping feral cats and said they were part of the local wildlife, which is absolutely crap. The next night I trapped another cat and took it to the shelter. This time the lady that took the cat was very nice and did not lecture me with her personal opinions. I thought everything was fine until maybe a month went by and I receive a certified letter from one of our neighbors with photos of three cats. In the letter the neighbor explained that one of cats I had trapped was theirs that they let out at night. She stated that when they went to the Loudoun Animal Shelter to claim their cat, she was told by an employee that the reason I trapped her cat was that I was a "cat hater". I assumed this employee was Nicole. The neighbor stated if I happen to trap another one, I must return it to her or I will be in violation of the law. She also stated that she had filed a police report against me and notified all our neighbors that I was a "cat hater". All our neighbors have each others email so this neighbor trashed me to all the others. Of course I was upset that the Loudoun Animal Shelter had told this lie about me being a "cat hater" when in fact I like cats as well as all wildlife and was the reason I trapped it, trying to keep the bluebirds from being killed. If I was a "cat hater" I would have done something other than take them to the shelter. I contacted the director of the shelter, Nina, and explained what had transpired. She said she wanted to see a copy of the letter I received from my neighbor and said after she looks into the matter, she would be in contact with me. I took a copy and dropped it off with a lady at the front desk. Maybe a week goes by and I never hear from Nina. I call the shelter numerous times and ask to speak with Nina but they always put me on hold and then come back and say she is on another line, in a meeting, or some other lame excuse. I had Nina's cell phone as she had initially called me from her cell so I call her repeatedly but she never answered so I leave several messages and still no return call. Drove over there to drop off the letter per her request so at least she could speak to me as she said she would. After many calls and messages left, one day she finally answers. I asked her if the employee Nicole had been reprimanded for the way she berated me and if she had found out who the employee was that stated I was a "cat hater". I assumed this person was also Nicole. Nina just brushed it off and said she didn't know anything. She seemed more concerned about me calling her repeatedly than looking into my complaint and chastised me for the numerous messages I had left. So she didn't care about what transpired, never did apologized for the way I was treated by Nicole or for an employee telling my neighbor I was a "cat hater". My advice to anyone that wants to drop off a feral cat at the Loudoun Animal Shelter; just put it in a box and leave it on their drive at night when they are closed....otherwise you might go through what I went through with employees lecturing you, telling lies about you, and director Nina ignoring you. They have cameras on the building so best to drop it off on the road leading up to the building to avoid the cameras. read more

What an amazing experience we had with a cat adoption. The shelter is clean, animals well cared for, staff friendly and the process was quick and painless. Walked in to see a kitten and walked out 45 minutes later with a new family member. So much better than other shelters I've worked with. read more

Several years ago I adopted a dog and a while later a kitty, from LCAS. They were both good experiences. Now in the last 2 months, however, I have been touched by two stories of bad communication and processes. The first was in January about a young cat for me and my granddaughter. A dear friend stopped at the shelter late one afternoon and was told it was too late to start the adoption process on the cat we had chosen. He was told to come back the next day to finish the paperwork. He left his name and number after being reassured that they would hold the cute little girl for him. He took a picture and texted it to us. My 6y.o. granddaughter was so excited. She named the new addition Rosy. The next morning about 11, our friend went to finish the adoption, equipped with a new carrier and collar. He was told the cat was already gone. It was adopted earlier that morning. They don't animals and it's first come/first serve. That is NOT what was what was told the evening before! Needless to say, there was a very upset young child. Fortunately, Fairfax County Animal Services saved the day. The 2nd sad event just happened. Friends had a beloved dog, adopted a couple of years ago, who was having some odd behavior around young step children. They called LCAS and talked with a someone who advised of a program to assess this beautiful boy. I offered to foster him while that happened but they needed to take him to the shelter. They were told they could check on him and the shelter would advise them their findings of what the best placement for the dog might be. Tearfully, they opted to trust the shelter and what they were advised. Not even a week later they called to check on their dog only to find out the shelter put him down!! They never contacted the people and the reason they gave was faulty. BE CAREFUL WHEN DEALING WITH LCAS! It's a kill shelter and they have to follow procedures. read more

A young family tearful returned their dog they adopted to LCAS because of behavior the dog exhibited around young kids. The shelter told the owners that they have a program that will assess the dog and then determine the best placement or disposition of beautiful boy. This dog was beautiful, sweet, a lover. I was going to see what the assessment determined and then apply to adopt him. The owners were told they would be advised of the outcome and that they could check on the pup. Well, they called today to check and learned this loving, and loved, boy had been euthanized. The only reason they gave was that he had a history of biting was a huge stretch of what they owners had explained. He had never bitten except a nip at the vets after a shot. When asked about getting the ashes, they were told it was too late. The bad communication, bad processes, and insensitivity gives this shelter a rating of 1 star. Many people, including children, were hurt by this. read more

Love love LOVE this animal shelter! This shelter is not responsible for the animal services through Loudoun County so the reviews regarding that experience are irrelevant! This shelter has great people who are always busy, but really know their information. They develop personal relationships with the animals and the really make sure you know what you're doing before adopting! I have adopted 3 goldfish and 1 robo hamster from them and each time I went on the free adoption days. The process was simple and easy seeing as I adopted small animals. They even gave me a 10 gallon tank for free for the hamster until I could get him the 20 gal long he needed. I have been so happy with the friendliness of my fish with my other aquarium fish and the hamster is just great. He has never bit me or tried to escape which is rare with robos! They always answer calls during business hours and the site it updated frequently. I definitely recommend supporting them and surrendering a pet is simple here (if you ever have to do something so heartbreaking). I have only surrendered one fish that was a client of mine and he was adopted the next week! It was great to see a big, beautiful fish go to a good home. Donations are always welcomed here and we donate quite often. They can always use your leftover pet supplies and unopened food as well! Definitely check here before adopting or buying anywhere else! Tip- the website is super helpful and I keep it bookmarked and check it regularly. read more

The front office staff was completely demeaning to my young daughter who spent her time and money to make cat toys and blankets. As a father, I witnessed a person void of compassion put down her work on the project and doubting the time she spent on the project. Moreover, she has done this same project numerous times for community service and high school. She works a minimum wage job and spent 5 hours of her earned wages to buy material for the project. Used her gas and time driving around looking for material to purchase. She used the shelters recommend hours for the project and hand made the blankets and used the sewing machine for cat toys. She did the hours over a couple of months to complete the entire project. Again, used her gas and time to drive nearly 30 mins to the animal shelter. She was all smiles handing in the toys and blankets, but left in tears after being shamed by the front desk staff. I can only imagine how a lack of compassion towards another person translates to how they treat the poor animals in the shelter. Shame on you! read more

The woman at the front desk today was rude to me as well as this sweet mother and daughter who were there at the same time. She made all of us feel stupid for not immediately knowing their entire process for adopting pets. She also lied about the kitten that the little girl was interested in saying "it's already been adopted". Upon asking the manger later, the kitten was available. Very odd. She should definitely be fired as she does not have the animals best interests at heart. read more

I made a very bad mistake . My girl had cancer. Tabs was a colony cat with a lot of medical issues. I took her down. Cried as I did. I went to jail and Tiger was taken as well as me losing my Love Tabs. I was a rescue volunteer in NY. Pomona Animal Care. I signed paperwork being told my sister-in Law would take Tiger. These bastards sent Tiger to Arlington. Tabs autopsy showed she was sick. she was 16. 5 years of saving over 300 cats, Loudoun spit in my face. T.Martinez never returned one call let alone the so called rescue people . My doctor bills were not introduced in court for both my girls. Neither was a letter from my vet. Yes, I was wrong, to be told shooting Tabs discusts your humanity. My donations go elsewhere, because I'll be armed if you received one penny from me. We tried going to the shelter yesterday during their Holiday Event and the front desk female was very rude and dismissive. The event never indicated that we had to arrive 15 min before closing to be provided decent service, but the front desk lady (Caucasian and long brown hair) made it clear she was not going to let us know what animals were available still (She stated: I don't know, go on the website) how do you not know? Working at a rescue shelter where the primary service is to have these animals go to a decent home and it was near closing time, which the only reason we made it so late is I was working and I live nearly one hour away so we raced to get there only receive terrible service. If there is ever an event you should clearly indicate to come 10-15 min before closing. read more

We adopted a cat from the LCAS, and it was a wonderful process. We could easily go and meet the animals, spend time getting to know them, and choose one we thought would fit our family. The "background" check was very quick (minutes - perhaps because we're long term Loudoun residents - I'm told it's not always that fast). We brought our cat home the same day. We had looked for a cat through a private rescue, and did adopt a dog through a private rescue the same week, so we became familar with their various processes. I was shocked at how burdensome it is to adopt through a rescue where you have to be (in many cases) approved prior to even meeting an animal. The approval process for most rescues includes talking to your vet, a home visit and often requires paying an application fee....all before you find a pet you'd like! By contrast, the LCAS was a breeze.... AHHH... Also, I was impressed with the facilities, the variety of animals and most importantly the staff who clearly loves every animal they take in. I'm proud this facility is here in my county. read more

We surrendered two of our dogs to this shelter. We were told we would be notified of their status; i.e adoption, rescue, etc. When my partner called to ask about their status a couple of days after surrendering them, they were very rude and said they couldn't tell us anything. Months later we found out one of our dogs was adopted and the other one was "humanely euthanized". We even stated on the paperwork that we wanted them back if they weren't able to be placed up for adoption. We are heartbroken. read more
