I've been spending a lot of time in Gardnerville the last few months which has given me the opportunity to dine at several different restaurants. We decided to check out Louie's Mandarin Gourmet. Needless to say we were disappointed. We felt we had to order an appetizer of egg rolls because the lunch special only offered soup. The egg rolls themselves were disappointing. They contained only chopped cabbage and nothing else. I ordered the Mongolian Beef Lunch Special with the Egg Drop Soup. I upgraded the lunch special substituting egg chow mein for the rice side for $2. The lunch special is also supposed to come with steamed vegetables. The Mongolian Beef itself was tasty. What was disappointing were the sides. The steamed vegetables was steamed cabbage. What I would expect to receive for steamed vegetables in a setting like that would be broccoli and carrots at a minimum. The egg chow mein noodles that I received looked like rice vermicelli to me and not chow mein noodles and they were rather bland and disappointing. My dining companion ordered the chicken curry. He reported that it was disappointing because it had lots of potato and nothing else very much chicken at all. And the curry itself was rather bland. Places Togo order and spent little over $100, the portions given where less than what you would get for lunch portion. When spoke to restaurant the manger stated he would give me 50%off new order of beef and peas. I would never go there and would not recommend this place. Poor coustomer service read more

All right, so I was out running errands. I was famished and needed some grub on the double. This place just happened to pop up. I was trying to follow my GPS. I didn't see anything but if you keep following the road, you'll go behind a plaza and lo and behold, you will see the restaurant. My first visit was very nice. My waiter was very polite and provided very prompt service. I do like that. They have a lunch special. I believe it's daily up until 3 PM. I believe so far I tried their Mongolian beef and their chow mein. My only gripe was the eggrolls. No meat just veggies. However the lunch specials are pretty kind to the old wallet. Both times I have ventured here. I have had great service from the staff. Also, I really enjoyed my main dishes. read more

I came here Father's Day weekend while I had some down time from work. My local friends took me here, never been. I guess this Chinese restaurant has been here like over 20 years. Service was friendly and the menu was a little different than your average American Chinese restaurant. It seemed to have a slight Thai influence, as I saw lemongrass and basil and cumin used in the food. These things you don't normally find in Chinese food, but you do in Thai. We tried the chicken lettuce wraps, fried chicken wings, combination pan fried noodles, pineapple fried rice, and the chicken curry. Most of the food was very good, I really liked the chicken wings, though I wish the wings were larger! The pan fried noodles were done well, all nice and crispy. But the one dish I would NEVER order again was the chicken curry. From the picture it was supposed to be chicken covered on a curry sauce and what looked to be served on a bed of steamed rice. THis is NOT what arrived at the table. WE got this big bowl of looked like curry soup with pieces of chicken in it, NOT like the chicken was the main ingredient of the dish, like you'd think chicken curry would be, but instead it was Curry with chicken, curry being the main element of the dish. It was like a Thai curry with chicken, which would have been sort of OK, but the taste was god awful! It lacked a real distinctive curry flavor and the pieces of chicken was all chopped up. I gotta say this was one of the worst dishes I ever tasted! The rest of the food was very good, so there's that saving Grace. I'll say get the chicken wings, but get them served on a plate, it normally comes in a plastic basket, that just makes the great wings look kinda cheap and too casual, like chips and salsa in a basket. Every time we place an order for take-out, it is ready at the time we picked to pick up our order. (read that as we see it coming out of the kitchen before we said who we are) Every time we dine in, it is always a pleasant time in a quiet setting. Service is great, food arrives HOT and about the time we finish our appetizers. What we learned a long time ago: Read the menu so you know what to expect with your order. Don't expect to get something not in the description just because the last place you were at, had it. Ask questions to be sure you know what you are getting. If substitutions are possible, they are happy to make them for you. read more

This Chinese restaurant is the epitome of no-frills. We were on our way home from road-tripping along US-395 and I wanted Chinese food. There weren't many places in the Gardnerville area but Louie's piqued my interest. I decided to give it a shot, especially after seeing that the lunch specials were only $10. In this economy, the price is hard to beat. It was a quiet Monday afternoon and we were one of only three tables having lunch. We already knew we wanted to have the lunch specials, so we ordered right away. I chose the curry shrimp and my husband chose the Mongolian beef. We had a choice of soup between hot and sour and egg flower. We both chose the hot and sour. Our hot and sour soups came to our table almost immediately. They had a good flavor, although I would have liked more tofu and mushrooms. Our lunch specials arrived shortly after. I was pleased with the portion sizes for what we paid. I was expecting more from the veggies that they mentioned in the menu, but for the price point I cannot complain. However, I would have liked to see more veggies in the fried rice as well as "wok hay", which sadly was nonexistent. Personally I feel that fried rice should come standard with veggies. If I had known I would have ordered white rice instead. My husband's Mongolian beef was excellent and had the classic flavor of the dish. I tried a bit of his food and was pleasantly surprised at the spiciness of the dish. My curry shrimp reminded me of the curry I grew up eating. The sauce had a nice consistency, although I would have liked it to be thicker. It was a bit watery at the end. There was a good amount of fat, juicy shrimp in the curry as well. However, again going with the above theme, I would have liked to see more veggies in the curry, especially potatoes. If you are in the Gardnerville/Minden area and want to enjoy a quiet lunch, Louie's is the place for you. Don't come here expecting anything fancy, but the lunch specials do their job, and nothing can beat the price. It's a solid 3.5 stars--and in terms of Chinese restaurants and Yelp averages, that fits the bill for Chinese food. We'd like to come back in the future to try more of their other entrees. read more

I ordered takeout. It took 45 minutes. Spring rolls are really crispy crunchy full flavor, but I had the lo mein with chicken. It was very dry. No flavor. I used up five packets of soy sauce, two packets of sweet-and-sour and one pack of hot mustard and that did not have an impact Really didn't have high expectations, but this didn't even meet that not for sure if I would ever go order there again! read more

After working in Downtown LA for 20+ years, I've eaten at some of the best "hole in the wall" Chinese restaurants. Louie's is very solid and matches up with many of those DTLA restaurants. I'm happy to find a local spot that has very good Chinese cuisine. Would recommend and will return. read more

Best Orange Chicken around, my kids love it there. Normally we order a double order so we have leftovers for the next day! My wife and I usually enjoy the Walnut Shrimp and of course we get a family sized bowl of their egg flour soup, best Chinese around. We go often and they never let us down. Louise has been our normal waitress and her service is top notch. Normally have ESPN on the back of the room so you can always catch your latest sports updates too. read more

Something has happened at Louie's restaurant and it's not good. We haven't been there for months, but we ordered $60 worth of food last night and it was terrible. We picked up Broccoli beef, Mushu pork, Orange chicken and Combination Chow mein. We were excited to share it with out daughter who had never experienced their food before. Unfortunately, every dish was Very Bland... No Flavor! My wife and I were very surprised as we've eaten there many times and shared meals with family who enjoyed it as much as we did. The "Orange chicken" had No Orange flavor to it whatsoever, just a semisweet glaze and nothing else. The Combination Chow Mein was very bland, almost tasteless. The Broccoli beef was the same... bland, the sauce lacking any beef flavor at all and the Mushu pork, well, it was certainly not what we've experienced in the past. So, What's Happened? New chef? Old chef who's lost his edge? Boredom in the kitchen? I can't imagine... Unfortunately, our once Favorite is now in the past and we'll be searching for a new Chinese restaurant in Minden/Gardnerville/Carson. read more

We have been coming here for four years now. I really wanted hot and sour soup to help fight a cold. I think they have changed their recipe because there was NO "hot" (as in spicy hot). This makes me sad because it is one of my favorites. I hope they find the old recipe. I will give them one more chance but if the recipe is still lost they will lose a customer. read more

Louie's has been our place for Chinese (lived near 38 years, but been going there what ever year they originally opened. Still go today when we travel back to Gardnerville/Minden NV.. Great egg Foo young is hard to find in all the 8 states we have lived. Louie's is still the go to one of the best. We have had many meals of various choices. Good, food, service and eating in the restaurant has the kool ambiance of Chinese... I judge my first bite by the egg rolls.. they passed for sure! read more

This is probably the 2nd worst chinese Ive ever had. I live here so I want it to be good, its not. Our beef dish was not only grey, but tasted 100% like overpowering fish sauce. I have had the dish before, and it is NOT supposed to taste or smell like rotten fish. The sauce was missing on the other two dishes, and the vegetables were raw and just thrown in. We threw everything away and didn't eat it. This was the 4th time, sadly we are done trying. I wish they would cook more traditional food instead of whatever this whitewashed version of food is. Much better than I expected! When you see a Chinese restaurant name Louie's, it's hard to not be a little bit skeptical. But the quality of the food and the quality for the price was excellent. I think the only criticism I would give is that a side of rice should be included with each entrée. But that is minor since the quality of the food is good. FOOD: This was our first time and so we went with our staple Chinese food - orange chicken and Kung pow chicken. Both were excellent! The orange chicken was not quite as fluffy and crispy as you might expect from someplace like panda express, but it had really good flavor and they gave you plenty of it. The same went for the Kung pow chicken. There was actually plenty of chicken! So often when you order at one of these places, Kung pow chicken is largely celery and water chestnuts and other vegetables. The chicken is maybe 25% of the dish. Not here! SERVICE: during the pandemic, we are not eating inside restaurants. But the service here was excellent. They had everything ready just like they said they would, and it was quick and easy to pick up. The food again was excellent and the people were very nice. COST: Wish we had gone at lunch to take advantage of the lunch specials, but even so at dinner each dish was about $11. We happened to find this place near our hotel. It is a small restaurant with more than 10 tables. The waitress and the crew were very kind and helped us feel comfortable since they knew we were not from the area. The food we ordered was good and delicious. We were there for lunch and picked up food for dinner. The amount of food was sufficient, and the price was reasonable. It was a good experience, I would definitely recommend this place. read more

How can food taste this good, from a place that's tucked away in a rundown strip mall, and sits next to the seedyist Quality Inn in Carson Valley? (I mean to tell you, that place is scarey. The Q Inn, not Louies). Don't let the name Louies, confuse you as it did me. The name sounds like it's run by a crooked nose gangster. But make no mistake, the food is authentic. To be honest with you, I can't really fill you in on how good the food is, that is, except for the Mongolian Beef. Perfectly outstanding. I get it every time I stay in town. Sometimes two, and yes, even three nights in a row. There may have been a fourth, had dinner time not coincided with a hot streak on a blackjack table, over at the Carson Valley Inn. The folks at Louies are genuine. Nothing like their surroundings. Very friendly, and you won't have to worry about getting bumped off by one of Louies "socio's" (look it up, I had to). Quick Tip: Do yourself a favor, when walking into Louies, don't turn your head to the right. When leaving don't look left. Sometimes you have to walk through hell to get to heaven. read more

However the sweet and sour chicken was not so good. Dark thick sauce with slimy onions. Looked and tasted like it had been in the fridge for a week and warm ed up. So spicy not good! I've been going to Louie's for over 20 years now and it never disappoints. And it's even better now that I know I can get my soup half hot sour and half egg flower soup! The combination is amazing! Another reason to go is that you can add the dinner option which includes soup, rice, egg rolls and wontons for a small amount to go along with your entree. The leftovers were two more meals!
