My family was dead set on wanting to try this place and when walking in I was kind of scared about cleanliness and my health...I am sure I'm not the first person who thought this because they hung the Health and Safety "A" front and center to try and make you feel better. I mean honestly the last thing you want to see at a sushi restaurant is a fish tank that is filled with green algae where you can barely see the fish inside and only half full as if it hasn't been cleaned, tended to, or refilled with water in months? years? That being said, when the sushi came out it was better looking than the vibe I got with the atmosphere. They did a sushi boat which was kind of cool for presentation. However, 3 rolls ended up being over $50+ which is insanely expensive with no all-you can eat option which is what our town is known for - A New York Times piece just did an article about it. :) With the current state of operations, I don't see how this business is going to be sustainable unless some changes are made. read more

I was nervous coming here. When we walked in there was no others sitting at the tables. However, we were seated immediately and drinks were ordered. We ordered an appetizer and 2 rolls. The appetizer was disappointing. When you think of seared tuna, you think of a flame lightly browning the top. This was overcooked and not seared. The cucumber was also overwhelming. A ponzu sauce and thin sliced jalapeño would have been a game changer with this dish. The fire role was delightful. Rice was a bit spongy but overall tasted well. The Ichiban roll, was dry. It needs a kick. Ponzu or some citrus sauce could have changed how this tasted. The server surprised me with mochi for my birthday which was very kind and delicious. Overall, this place isn't bad. These aren't Southern California rolls. They lack the effect of ponzu, spicy mayo, and thinly sliced limes and jalapeños on their rolls. And those key things make a difference. The sushi was mediocre at best. Let's start with the 6 piece tempura shrimp. The tempura had a great taste to it however, the shrimp to tempura ratioratio is way off as they cut the shrimp in half. We asked to have wasabi with our tempura shrimp however they told us that wasabi does not come with the tempura shrimp. The sushi did not taste fresh by any means. The service here seemed a little bit forced as we were only one of three customers in the whole entire restaurant. You would expect outstanding guest service. It was extremely cold in the restaurant as well. I do not believe we will be coming back here. read more

Very unprofessional very bad service the chef was good, but the waitress that greeted us was very snarky and also the cleanliness of the restaurant was just not great got pretty much stared down by the waitress the whole time we were there with a bad luck on her face constantly felt very uncomfortable. The atmosphere was just very uncomfortable overpriced for what the food was. And ok update after a few hours from eating there.. I'm now sick and violently vomiting only thing I've eaten today. We came in for all-you-can-eat sushi with only an hour before closing, and I was seriously impressed. The owner was a one-man army--rolling sushi non-stop for multiple tables, always smiling, and still super friendly even after closing time. The sushi was fresh and delicious--the Fuji Roll and Macho Roll were standouts. I have huge respect for someone who can run a place like this on their own with such a great attitude. I was with a group of 4 ladies. I ordered the Cal Roll which was good. Basic roll. My friends ordered fried appetizers, got what they ordered. The Asian Egg Rolls were crap. Gyoza were good. The biggest issue is their service. The kid waiting on us was so scatter brained. Didn't bring utensils, napkins, forgot waters that were asked for. Food came out at strange times. Good service. Bad raw fish. It is low quality. The fish tasted old, fishy and of low quality. And when we complained about it , the cook grabbed it off the plate with his bare hand. There are signs every where inside saying they are short staffed and to be nice to the staff. Seems like people complain often but its not the service. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful. Just a matter of time before this restaurant goes under in my opinion. It used to be all you can eat, has the signs, but doesn't have all you can eat. I actually thought it would be better with ala carte, better quality and less rice. I love spicy tuna and wish I wouldn't of ordered two to start. The tuna was warm, smelly and definitely not the prime cuts but the crappy part of the Ahi. I had a bite and left it there and the server didn't ask why I didn't eat it because deep down he knows it inferior my guess. Do not go here if you know what good Sushi tastes like, you'll be disappointed. The spicy tuna was $7.50 for a roll, I added crab on top and they charged $12/roll. 1st experience we loved our server though he actually didn't eat sushi. Portions were good and service was prompt. About 3 month ago. Now... 2nd time around server with big earrings gave us the wrong menu, couldn't crack a smile for her life, and we had to ask for our check. Overall I was going to leave 3 stars. Good food good service been there twice and both times didn't disappoint if looking for a good sushi place in minden this is your spot

A few nights ago we decided to go to our used to be favorite sushi restaurant. We have had sushi twice in the last two weeks and it was really good so we decided to do it again. We are a family of five so every time we order from this restaurant we spend between 150 and $200. We are happy to do so because it is a local restaurant and we believe in supporting our locals. We ordered our dinner which came to approximately $170, my daughter went and picked it up, I was not really worried because we had ordered so frequently and they have done such a good job packaging it up and getting the order right we just knew it was going to be awesome this time as well. When she got home we noticed that a few of the rolls was packaged very sloppy we also order Ceviche every time and since covid-19 it has been takeout and they have always package the crispy shell separately so they don't get soggy being it is a to-go order. This time I noticed that they put the crispy shell under the ceviche so it was mushy and Soggy I was a little upset because I figured you would never put a crispy shell under wet fish on a to-go order for the simple fact that it's going to be a Mess by the time we get it home. I did not check the rest of the order before I called and said you know we always order Ceviche and it's always packaged separately but this time it was packaged all together and it's pretty inedible because the tortillas on the bottom are soggy and mushy she immediately went to defense and said that I would have had to ask to have it packaged separately. But they would credit me a Ceviche next time I came I was okay with that. After we got everything unboxed I noticed that my favorite roll the baked Sakura was not made properly. I order this roll every time I go to this sushi restaurant. The lady who answered the phone sent me to her manager Derek he asked me to text a picture over to him which I did and then he replied by saying that he checked with the chef and the sushi roll was made properly I told him this does not even look like the baked Sakura and anyone who has had this roll there before can look at it and see it is definitely not the baked Sakura. He was so disrespectful and told me that it was made correctly so they would not correct it. I told him I would not debate with him whether or not the roll was made correctly because I knew it was not the same roll I always order the problem I had mostly was his unprofessionalism and his disrespectful tone. I never said the sushi was not good it was just not what I ordered. After this episode I will have to say that I will not be returning to this restaurant anytime soon. I told them they could keep the credit for the ceviche because we would be finding a different sushi place to go to if that's the way they're going to treat their customers. They lost a good customer who supported them through this pandemic. read more

Haven't had sushi in a hot minute and this satisfied my cravings. Had the Sakura and it was awesome. My bf said the Johnny was pretty good as well. This is an update from my review a few years back. I still love this place! Went on a date night with my husband. I hadn't been here for over a year because of Covid. We sat down and one of the owners, who also is a server, saw me, and greeted me saying it had been a while, since I had been a regular for years. Oh how I missed their sushi! The Fugi roll is my favorite. A great big roll that after eating 2 I was completely stuffed! My husband is a newbie to sushi. He refuses to eat raw sushi so I suggested his daughter's favorite, the Lilly. I also ordered him the deep fried Godzilla roll, thinking maybe he would like that. The Lilly is now his favorite. He enjoyed the Godzilla but I think he realizes he actually doesn't mean cooked, cooked like in a deep fried roll. He like a cold roll with his crystal or tempura shrimp, avocado, spicy crab and he is good with cream cheese and white onion. The reason I love this place is the shrimp they use is a great size. There is another sushi place in Carson City that people rave about that I've gone to that I'm confused why people love it. Each roll I got had a shrimp that i could barely see cover with pressed crab. Where's the shrimp? Anyway, our service was great. Kept asking for more ginger and they gave it to us. They give you ginger but no place ever gives me enough. When I ask for more they normally give a small dish with a little more. American Ni gave us a good size amount. Unfortunately, my husband also discovered that he loves ginger so between him and I, I once again had to ask for more. Again they gave us a generous amount. The only thing was we did have to ask for more water for my husband since he also discovered the soy sauce & wasabi combo. Prices are amazing! We recently went to sushi in Reno and the AYCE was $37 per person. I'd have to eat 3 rolls just to break even. The average roll was $12-$13 and they were above 20% smaller than my Fugi Roll at $11. Average sushi roll here is about $10. Be aware that American Ni has discontinued their AYCE but has a few combo specials. We opted for a la cart. Which actually was cheaper than if we had done an AYCE. Plus we can take left over home vs not with AYCE. I did see other reviews saying that service was bad but ours was excellent considering the whole place was packed. They do have a sign asking to be patient since the whole world is short staffed. If you are in a hurry maybe eat at home instead since I know everyplace is short staffed. Again, love, love this place! read more

First time here since ownership changed and we are definitely impressed with the upgrades. First thing I noticed was there was no funky sushi smell like so many other restaurants have. Just mild pleasant neutral scent. Second, the hosts were bright and cheery and service was fast. I love coming to restaurants where people seem genuinely happy to be working there. Within striking distance of my place of employment is this establishment, and this week I was able to enjoy the all you can eat lunch for $18.95 with a co-worker. My friend was flexible, and so we asked the chef to prepare for us whatever he wanted, and we let him know that spicy was okay. What followed ranged from good to very good, and we surely enjoyed our money's worth. The strategy that works best, for me, is to arrive with people who like to be adventurous and try new things. At an all you can eat sushi restaurant I think the best size is four people who don't mind sharing with each other. You'll get a lot of different kinds of bites and so adding experiences to the event is part of the fun. It's been several days since our visit, and so my memory fades, but we did get to enjoy about six rolls between us and we also had them cook us a portion of the mussels that were included with the lunch. We did ask the chef to explain exactly what we were eating, and the majority of the rolls he was inventing on the spot. He did serve us a couple from the menu, and they were also good. We opted for water, but they do have a selection of beer and wine should you be interested. The menu on their website is way off on the prices. I thought I was over charged last night by almost twice what their menu list. Seems they have doubled most everything. Thinking I was wronged I totaled what we had for take out and it was half of what I was charged. 1st and last time here. The service was ridiculously slow. The sushi had so much rice and very little fish. Quality of fish was mediocre. Hand rolls had about 2 bites before all that was left was rice. Note to owner; when you serve less rice people will be hungry enough to order more. So you will make more money. Americkan Ni Sushi is my family's favorite sushi place in the Minden Gardnerville area. My favorite is the Fuji Mountain. The food is always fresh. The staff is friendly and is always helpful with a suggestion off their menu. A few years ago I wanted to give a birthday surprise to my son's girlfriend who was a vegetarian. We decided on sushi. They filled a bamboo boat with all kinds of deliciousness. We took the feast home and returned the bamboo boat the next day. She loved it! I am very sad to write this, but this used to be my favorite sushi place out of anywhere local, but man, it's not the same anymore. I ordered rolls I have had for YEARS, and they tasted nothing like they were supposed to, plus when the price has dropped and when the other local sushi places haven't raised their prices that much, it makes it hard to support a hometown favorite when it just is.
