Such a great experience sitting at the bar! I met a friend here to celebrate her birthday over the weekend and was not disappointed. It was my first visit and all the amazing yelp reviews. Definitely suede my decision to pick this place over all the other options in Carson. First, parking is easy and the location is cute. Interior is clean and smelled good, and the wait staff were quick to greet us and seat us. Appetizers and drinks came quickly as well, and we were checked on frequently, although not too frequently. OK, the Sushi... So freaking good! I was amazed at how each roll truly feels individual, they are not using a premade base roll and putting a random fish and sauce combination on top of it and renaming it. The amount of fish in each bite was generous, flavor combinations were amazing, and I truly felt like this was a different sushi experience from any other that I have had recently. OMG, this place is so good for both their food AND the value. You'd be stupid to not do AYCE. We went for lunch and it's $30pp. Get 2 specialty rolls and it already pays for itself. But, of course we didn't just get 2 rolls. We got 4 rolls, 4 apps, and 4 nigiri. All just for $60!! I must highlight 2 items that I LOVED. SUPREME SCALLOPS - they're an appetizer and you get 3 pcs. They're grilled or seared hard and sauced up with, I think is sweet chili sauce and a soy based sauce. So good! THE HEARTBREAKER - 2 pieces of tuna nigiri with a soy sauce, lemon, and raw onion. This was my fave, I got 4 orders! Next time, these 2 items are all im gonna stock up on. Ambiance is nothing worth reviewing. It looks just like every other Japanese/American spot. All I can say is you just have to come here! You won't be disappointed! It's all you can eat for $40 and well worth it! The guys making the sushi are absolutely amazing! It seems chaotic but they all know what they are doing! We sat at the sushi bar and was great! It's a small place but atmosphere was probably what you would expect from a sushi place. Sumi Sushi sliding back into my top sushi set after a recent visit with the family forced me to focus on the raw, fish forward offerings that were simultaneously free of anything fried, which led to some significant sushi discoveries! First off, nigiri. These are HUGE and they come with a sizable slab of sashimi cut fish on top too. Pro-tip is to order less than you think you'll eat, because the size is sure to surprise and they will fill you up quickly. Don't sleep on the specialty nigiri here OR he Scallop Supreme appetizer, which is seared scallop sashimi! Second, sticking with the size matters theme, the hand rolls. Spicy salmon, spicy scallop and scallop OG are all stellar, and you will be blown away by the amount of seafood stacked in these when they arrive. One is easily an entire maki roll worth of filling and you will be stoked when you sink your teeth in. I definitely ordered at least two spicy salmon hand rolls and should have had a third. Third, massive maki, perfectly proportioned and portioned for sharing. Do yourself a favor and order the Pink Fire with spicy yellowtail seared with togarashi, sesame oil, salt & pepper wrapped in soy paper, then topped with seared tuna, yummy sauce, teriyaki, ponzu, green onions, chili flakes, & sesame seeds. The Double Down is another winner with salmon, tuna, yellowtail on the inside, then topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, tobiko, avocado. FOURTH, don't skip dessert! Can you say house-made ice cream?? I can and I'd say it two or three times here if they'd let me. This stuff is SERIOUSLY good. Desserts are not an afterthought here and you need to save room. FIFTH, last but 100% the most important and not least, SERVICE IS STELLAR! Yes. They are on it. They love what they serve. They're a solid team and this place wins as a result! I dropped by for lunch last week and to get my sushi craving out of the way; it's insatiable. I was greeted and seated promptly at the bar per my request and I sat in front of Charles. He was amazing! Friendly and offered fast service. One thing I enjoy about sitting at the bar is being able to interact with the sushi chefs. Charles and I chatted about our island roots. If you enjoy Hamachi kama, Sumi sushi does it right! I'll have to come back for this again in the near future. My mouth is watering writing this review. I didn't know the last visit that this was a locally owned establishment hence their clever name. While in on lunch I was eating next to one of the Laubs meanwhile enjoying the Laub special. Had lunch with a friend before doing Carson's Wine Walk. I am very critical when it comes to sushi. Sumi is the best sushi I've had in the area. Tge fish was fresh and the ratio of rice to fish was perfect. The lunch special left me feeling full and it was priced right. The servers checked-in frequent enough but not to a point it was annoying. The restaurant has setting in the front as well as the back where the sushi bar is. It would be great if Sumi offered patio seating and hope they will consider adding. Other than that, I look forward to visiting again. read more

Wow! This place has the absolute best AYCE sushi. The fish was incredibly fresh and super high quality! The hamachi, escolar, and salmon was my favorite. The green lipped mussels were to die for but, beware, they include 4 per order which is not listed on the menu (hence this outrageous photo ) As others have mentioned, they have gigantic nigiri pieces so order half of what you usually get. A bit disappointed with my visit to sumi. I've heard great things so I have been very excited to try. I just moved to Carson and figured it would be the perfect time to finally stop in. When we came in, we were one of only two tables in the whole restaurant but somehow got some of the worst service I've experienced in sushi. It was so slow, no one checked on us one time except the times I literally would flag people down. No one brought us extra AYCE sheets until I flagged them down. No one asked us if we liked our food. Only got our waters refilled one time. I didn't like my dessert I chose and had to flag someone down after 15 minutes to request something else. For how dead it was in the restaurant this was extremely surprising to us. I would have ordered more food but with how unbelievably slow it was we ended up running out of time. For the few non dessert rolls we did get to try, they were delicious! Which is why I'm giving 3 stars and not less. Food was great we really enjoyed everything we got. This place is the most expensive AYCE I've ever gotten at $40 a person, and for that price tag I can't imagine coming back to receive poor service. Also, one of the two servers working would go outside the front door to hangout and smoke with what I presume was a customer. It's fine to take a break but to do it one foot outside the front door smoking was pretty gross. Has to be, hands down, the best sushi in Northern Nevada...just an opinion. A friend insisted we travel down to the capital city to check this place out. Well worth the drive! Decent sized place with bar and tables, vibrant atmosphere. We went on a Wednesday night and it was hoppin'! Got a booth at the front and even though it was slammed, we were attended to almost immediately. Great start. Ordered Freaky Edamame and Supreme Scallops as apps. The freaky has a nice kick, not salty at all. The scallops were cooked to perfection, buttery and tasty. Next on to the nigiri...salmon, smoked salmon, yellowtail, eel, seared tuna, upside down shrimp...more fish than rice...not your usual AYCE fish flavored rice. Super fresh and the smoked salmon....WOW!! Salmon skin hand roll was on point as were the rolls especially the Double Down. Finished up with a scoop of homemade ice cream. Went to Sumi Sushi with two friends, and we all decided to get the all-you-can-eat option. For our appetizers, we ordered the rice balls and the edamame. The edamame was actually pretty good and had a really tasty seasoning on it. As for the sushi, we tried a good mix of everything--nigiri, hand rolls, fresh rolls, and cooked rolls. While the food wasn't bad, none of the rolls really stood out to me as being exceptional or memorable. Everything was just okay. On the positive side, the staff was very nice, and the restaurant was very clean, which is always a plus. Overall, Sumi Sushi is a pretty middle-of-the-road place. I use to come here with my mother and since she's gone, this is the first time back and I thought it would be sad but Delilah made the experience amazing, she was attentive, polite and just engaging, there were other staff to assist but she definitely carrying the team! Order was placed by door dash. After 75 minutes for my family's order, as it was time to be picked up they cancelled my order. This is the second time I have order from Sumi the last time they forgot one bag with half my order. I will never order again from this gas station Sushi restaurant. Ordered a Togo order and when I got it home it was missing an entire roll. I order 4 rolls and got 3. Went back in to get the problem fixed and never got an apology or anything. Just a " god catch", for how much they charge it shouldn't be my responsibility to catch their mistakes. Can't spend a night in Carson City and not come to Sumi (Sue-me) sushi. TV's all around, the light's ambiance showcasing the food. Came on a Saturday Night and the place was packed. I was alone so they squeezed me in instantly. Joe Laub himself ushered me my first drink, I think he likes to help when his joint gets swamped. We had so much fun trading legal quips. Counselor Laub tossed me a piece of a fresh roll called a subpoena, when he told me the name I said gladly accepted being served. My server recommended Don Tom's which were egg rolls filled with crab, pretty tasty. I started with a Luke Skywalker, Joe told me the sauce for the appetizer was used by many on their sushi and he was spot on. It mixed well!! Next I ordered a heartbreaker Nigiri and lobster dynamite roll. When it came out Mr. Laub told me that the roll was an excellent choice. I replied "Your Honor the prosecution had to concede that roll was a good choice" to which he said "so ordered" This seemed to please others at the bar people were smiling and laughing along with us. He quickly came back a few bites in to confirm my elation with the order. Then he said "we just keep getting better and better" to which I replied "that's not hearsay, that's admissible testimony" ensuing chuckles followed and then the lawyer in him said "Res Ipsa Loquitur" and he went on to explain that it was Latin meaning: truth is so clear that it reveals itself without needing further explanation which left our onlookers in awe. Someone even asked me if I was a lawyer? I just said my server was making me look a lot smarter than I appeared. Filled and happy, I got my check and paid and Joe came back and shook my hand, and I noticed that everyone was quietly awaiting another exchange. It seemed like even the sushi chefs stopped what they were doing to look. So I said "on the charge of gluttony, I've decided to plead guilty to one count of Maki-Slaughter in the first degree" counselor Laub on his toes hit me with " that's unnecessary the court finds it was justifiably homicide" the room erupted! We missed the Yelp Elite event here, and we heard it was the BEST event, so we wanted to give it a try. The place gets crowded quickly, but they are efficient in getting people seated and getting the sushi made. We sat right in front of one of the sushi chefs, and everyone was busy making sushi. This is a good casual sushi restaurant with friendly service. The all you can eat option comes with appetizers and dessert. Lunch was $30.95 per person. The nigiri sushi had very large pieces of fish... a little too big for one bite in my opinion, but the fish tasted fresh and the rice was cooked well. We also had a couple of long rolls, my favorite was the spider roll. It had carrot and pickled daikon along with the soft shell crab inside. We enjoyed the scallop and the mussel appetizers. They also have a couple of creative desserts included with the all you can eat menu. We tried the Strawberry Fields roll. It was yummy but if you've already had your fill of rice from all the all you can eat sushi you might want to skip this dessert. They offer several flavors of ice cream you could choose from instead. It took over a year for me and Gayle to return to Sumi Sushi after a particularly memorable Yelp Elite event here. The rules are that you review the event, and then the restaurant later. That takes the "free food" factor out of the review equation. And why did we wait so long? Maybe that's one of life's many mysteries. We came here last night with Darling Granddaughter, who loves Sushi. On this Sunday night, the place was hopping, but with enough capacity to be seated at a nice lower table near the front. The Sushi was fresh and tasty, the service was prompt and attentive (including the owner), the portions were generous, pricing was consistent with the quality and quantity, and we left full and happy. So compared to the previous visit? Same as it ever was! Tip: The Sushi comes out quickly, but for those who order something "Off Nigiri" (like a Teriyaki Plate), you might have to wait a little longer. read more

While visiting Carson City, we decided to get some sushi at Sumi once again. Even though it was close to closing time, the staff got us seated and taken care of right away. 2 of the guys preparing sushi were super friendly. This time, we tried the PINEAPPLE EXPRESS and the TWISTED LIZ. Both were superndelicous and Fresh. The muscles were really good too. We had the pleasure of talking to Joe (owner) and once again be reminded of why this place is succeeding - his philosophy of having this place as a hobby, providing quality food and a great time to all customers.
