There is only one reason I'm not giving this 5 stars and that is the bartender. My group of 6 came here for my 31st birthday. As we waited for the rest of my group to show up, because they won't seat you until your whole group is present, my husband and I sat down at the bar for a drink. This was my first ever visit here so I was excited to try the house wine and their famous picon punch. The bartender continued to help other people who walked up the bar after us for a good 10 minutes. I even tried to wave him down and making good eye contact without trying to be rude. Eventually he came over to us, sweating and out of breath asking what we would like. I said I would like some wine, he replied "you wanna see a menu or something?? Or you want the house wine" I asked what kind of wine the house was weather it was a cab or merlot, he rolled his eyes at me and sighed and said "no it's a blend". I said fine I'll have that. He didnt come back over again the time we sat there to see how we were doing. We were finally seated. The waitress was amazing. The food was great. Although my steak had an abundance of gristle on it which was too tough to each about 1/3 of it, what a waste of a good steak. My husband had the sweet breads which were delish! Table wine was a nice touch. Desert was good. After dinner we went upstairs and had some more drinks. The bartender up here was so much more helpful and nicer! We played pool and some dice and listened to some great music. Only down side was it gets incredibly hot up there, especially if your drinking alcohol, ease get some better air conditioning. I've never even heard of Basque till a few hours ago. Food is served family style, as in you sit with total strangers and you all share everything on the table. Food comes quick and it's different. Born and raised in Carson City, I'd never been to Louis' until a co-worker recommended it on a trip back for Thanksgiving. Wow, what a great recommendation! Parker, Natalie, and Sean were all awesome in the service department. Parker's Picon Punch was delicious...and effective. The food was delicious - I had NY Steak, wife had shrimp, plus the salad...SALAD, was better than salad should be. The Basque beans and bread we're delicious, and the soup was probably the best part. It's our 4th visit which means everytime we visit Reno, this is the place we NEED to go and have lunch. To make it brief, they never disappointed us, and we will definitely visit this place again and again. We, two of us, visited Louis' Basque restaurant for today's lunch, ordered 7 ounce steak + lunch set ($20) and regular lunch set ($15). We were the first ones at 11:30am sharp today and they were so ready to serve us right away. That is something we really appreciate as we had only one hr for our lunch this time. Last time, we order lamp and prawn, and they were great. We just didn't have time to stay longer hrs to eat much this time. So we ordered some decent portions. Our server Sean was great, took our order right away as we knew what we wanted. Food was served speedy, which we really wanted and it was really nice. Always no regret to order garlic French fries (extra $1-2) as it looks like their chief chaps garlic himself, stir fries garlic and mixed with French fries upon order. Never looked like they use Costco minsed garlic at all. We really like it and empty the dish fast. Our steak, medium well done was great, served as warm, not too hot so great to eat right away. I finished the served wine jar myself as my husband had coffee. I liked their bread, salad and beans, too. We had icecream for dessert ($3). We had a great lunch for an hr and it was wonderful! Literally one if the most disappointing dinners out of my entire life. Four friends and I were excited to go out and have a "family" dinner and were ready to spend some dough. Upon entering the restaurant we were sat and when the waitress eventually showed up she asked us what we wanted. No hello, no smile, no offer to describe the choices, or to explain how the inclusive meal works. We should have walked out right then. After ordering she dropped one carafe of wine in the table and then disappeared into the kitchen. The half carafe on wine barely filled four glasses and since we had already been told that we wouldn't get any more wine, we wanted to get at least a full glass each. After waiting ten minutes for a sign of service I walked into the kitchen to ask for more wine. While I did receive more wine I also got a dose of nasty attitude. It's only Franzia for crying out loud. Next our waitress dropped some barely passable soup which tasted like a crappy version of Campbell's minestrone. And then all the rest of the four "courses" were unceremoniously dumped on the table at once: greasy beans, wilted salad, fatty oxtails. The main course was OK but the rest of the food was borderline gross. The dessert of fruit and cheese had rotten grapes and two measly slices of old cheese. Pitiful. If there had been any sort of service provided we could have forgiven the quality of the food. Every restaurant has off nights. But out waitress could not have been worse or any less present. We had to go find her to pay our overpriced bill. For $25 each plus tip we could have had a WAY better meal elsewhere. Even at Taco Bell. read more

It's so fun to chat with people and learn about eachothers adventures. The TWO of us had: A super delicious salad (Think Olive Gardens but WAY BETTER) A Rice dish with full size bone in fried chicken pieces - soooo good House Red Wine- pretty good A vegetable/cabbage soup that knocked our socks off - seriously left with out socks ;) Super jumbo plate of piping hot crisp on the outside and soft in the middle french fries. Bread and butter- good but nothing special Perfectly cooked Medium Rare lamb chops- made me moan..lol caused quite a scandal that night!!! As others have already mentioned, you go to Louis' more for the experience than for the food. That's not saying the food isn't good--it is--but if you aren't on board with the whole Basque experience, you may leave disappointed. Basque Friend told me that Louis' is modeled after a Basque Sheepherder boarding house. Lucky sheepherders! The atmosphere is casual, and, unless you come with your own large group, you will end up sharing a table (and food) with strangers. The only part of your meal that you get to choose is the entree, and whether or not you want ice cream or cheese for dessert. (Take the cheese. ALWAYS take the cheese!) This is all hearty, country fare, not the Spanish or French fine-dining experience you may expect from other Basque restaurants. My main complaint about Louis' is that I so rarely get to have tongue; it is almost never on the menu when I go. Ditto for the oxtail soup. I'm sure I could call ahead and figure out when I should go, but dining out shouldn't be that difficult. Also, make a reservation because they get snotty with you if you don't. And one last tip: Louis is generous with coupons, so keep your eyes peeled. read more

If you are looking for basic food that is nicely cooked with an atmosphere which is casual and friendly, then this is a good restaurant for you. If you want fancy, fine, hip trendy dining, then stay away. This is decidedly a family style old country casual restaurant. We have eaten at basque restaurants before and knew what to expect. Family style service, communal tables, and lots of food. This was our first time here and I am glad we gave it a try. We were greeted by a very pleasant young lady and were shown to a large table already occupied by another couple. The meals are one price, all inclusive of entree, sides, and a carafe of house red wine. The bread was ho-hum and a bit dry. The wine was surprising light and was quite appropriate for sipping through all the courses. First course was soup - clam chowder. My husband and I decided not to have any, but our table mates said it was quite good. This was followed by beans and a salad with vinaigrette dressing. The beans were warm and tender with chunks of spicy sausage. The salad was over whelmed by the dressing, but the flavor was fresh even if the dressing made the lettuce a bit limp. Then came the platters with the main dish. My husband and our table mates had the sirloin steak, I had the Basque chicken. The steak was flavorful and cooked to order. My chicken was was cooked to falling off the bone tenderness in a rich broth with tomato, peppers and onions. French fries were served on the side and were crispy on the outside and fluffy and hot on the inside. They tasted of real potato and were light and dry - not a bit greasy. Nothing fancy, nothing cutting edge, but good honest food at a reasonable price. Would I come here again? Probably, but it is not a restaurant I would make a destination. This place makes my tummy think angels are singing. Basque is the magical civilization that no one can find the origins because the food is so damn good you forget your mission. But really, they bring you wine, and water, then salad, soup, beans (OMG the beans, with bacon w yumyum), then you have a choice of beef balls or tongue, lamb, stew, sometimes chicken, all yumyumyumyum and they dont give a crap if yo ustay for 2 or 3 hours. Didn't have the best experience at Louis last night. Had someone in town and wanted them to experience Basque food. We had to wait 15 minutes before someone acknowledge us. That was with a reservation. We were told our table would be ready in a few minutes. Two other groups of two walked in after us with reservations and were sat before us. We were then sat 5 minutes later at the same table with the four, they had been served slightly before us, and given dishes to share. However they ate almost all the food. We got no rice at all, had to ask for bread. We were asked if we wanted mint jelly for our lamb, said yes, but never got it. We had to ask the people sitting next to us to borrow their mint jelly, of which they had eaten most of. Hopefully it was an off night. read more

Great concept for a restaurant. Overall, it's definitely a place to experience at least once. I really liked how there is a set course menu, with only a few main course choices. I enjoyed some quite authentic and well-prepared Basque dishes. In particular, the bean stew with chorizo and morcilla disappeared quickly off our table. This place is a blast! And quite the reno staple. I have never actually sat down in the restaurant area here, but I am a frequent customer at the bar area and enjoy their bar menu very much. They make great drinks for decent prices (I am not a picon fan, but others rave about it). The bar menu is inexpensive and delicious with items like wings, fries, sandwiches, burgers, and other appetizer goodies. On our most recent visit, we celebrated my BF's birthday there. They were kind enough to reserve some bar space for us and we had about 20 people crowded around 2 small tables in the bar, all drinking, snacking and enjoying ourselves. Delish! Fried zucchini sticks were my favorite.. that is next to the (almost State Drink) Pecan Punch! The lamb dip was great -- hot and flavorful! We were in Reno for the balloon races and thought we'd give this place a try late one morning. We were a bit early for the dining room so we took a seat at the bar to wait it out. After one amazing Bloody Mary we decided to stay where we were to enjoy our early lunch. We started with fried zucchini which was quite tasty and went well with my spicy drink. We tried the clam chowder which was probably very good by Reno standards but coming from the bay area where there's exceptional chowder, this one did not wow us. Moving to the main course of Chorizo and Lamb burgers (not together). My Lamb Burger was outstanding! Perfectly cooked and seasoned with just the right amount of carmelized onions and goat cheese. A winner for sure! Now a Chorizo burger would not be on my list but Mr. S really like his choice saying it was awesome. We took half our burgers home with us and enjoyed them for dinner too. The real star of the show here is Blaise, our bartender/server. He is the epitome of a good barkeep! Not only did he make a very good drink but he could charm the socks off a table of old ladies that came in (oxygen bottles and all), all the while serving others lunch at the bar and concocting drinks to make everyone happy. The Greater Reno Grub and Gripe Group gathered at Louis' Basque Corner in downtown Reno for a Chowdown in late August. Or what was left of a group decimated by summer travel, Burning Man and the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off. The idea was to compare Louis' under its new owners with the Santa Fe Hotel, where we had gathered earlier this year. The dinner at Louis' was nice, but for me Santa Fe comes out the overall winner for the meal. The meal at Louis' started with a simple vegetable soup. Not bad but nothing stood out here either. Next up were the beans and salad. The beans are beans. I don't know much you can do here except maybe add ham or bacon. Louis' has more ingredients in their salad, so they are they clear winner here. Santa Fe offers iceberg lettuce with simple oil-and-vinegar dressing. Then came a dish called Chicken Basquaise, a dish with green peppers, onions and garlic. This is where the first time there seemed to be significant diversion from my dining companions. This dish sounds good in theory. But it didn't seem to come together for me. It seemed a little overcooked. I would have liked it if the flavors were more vibrant. They seemed to kind of blend together in an uninteresting way. We had a larger group for our meal at the Santa Fe and for this portion we got both spaghetti and oxtail stew. The Santa Fe spaghetti was old fashioned, like they would have served in the 1950s, but I loved it. The oxtail stew was fantastic. In my book the Santa Fe wins hands down here. Then came the three entrees, which we split, and the French fries. Let me get the French fries out of the way. These were decent fries at Louis' Basque corner. I think the oil may have been a little bit too new, since the fries weren't quite crispy enough. But they were certainly good. The Santa Fe serves lard-cooked French fries. Un-fricking-politically correct fries cooked in animal fat. Let's face it. Fries are a means to take a bland food and deliver delicious fat and salt flavor to your taste buds. Nothing does that better than lard-cooked fries, cholesterol count be damned. So the Santa Fe wins here hands down. For the entrées, we split leg of lamb, top sirloin steak and a rabbit dish. We disagreed on one here, the leg of lamb dish. I thought it was too gamey. I still ate it. But I expect better lamb out of a Basque restaurant. The lamb chops I got at Santa Fe were just killer. Glenn and Tahoe Bill seemed to like it better. No disagreement on the other two entrees. As Glenn noted, the top sirloin steak seemed to melt in your mouth. It was good quality meat that was cooked right. The rabbit came in a mushroom sauce. Both had nice flavors. I think I might give Louis' an edge in entrees because they were good and they try to be more ambitious. The lamb chops at Santa Fe still rocked. Dessert was ice cream with chocolate syrup. At Santa Fe it was just ice cream. No chocolate syrup. At Louis' the three of us sat family style. We sat at a table with a party of three and a college-age couple. We were a big enough group at the Santa Fe we had our own table, but I noticed they still sat small groups at their own table there. At Louis', the new owners remodeled and took away the lowered ceilings. This makes it much noisier. I was sitting across from the college couple but couldn't hear them when they talked. And the woman was hot. I wanted to talk to her. Like the Santa Fe, parking is difficult on nights of Reno Aces home games. I had to park at the last spot on the block with about a foot of the front-end my compact car in a red zone. I said a prayer to the patron saint of parking tickets and went in for my meal. It seems like Louis' successfully made the transition to the new owners. They serve a tapas-style menu that's available in the bar. I can strongly recommend the lamb dip sandwich, which is like a French dip only with lamb. Tasty. read more

Friday night was not the best experience we have had at Louis'... we originally wanted to go to Depot, which was of course packed at 7pm on a Friday night, so we debated between Lincoln Lounge and Louis' which are both places that we usually really enjoy. We settled on Louis to get a Picon Punch and some bar bites, and we found ourself in a packed house with less than personable staff. Picon Punches that were made so quickly and sloppily that they tasted nothing like they have in the past, and when we asked what were in the Lamb Bites under the "bar food" we were told "it's Lamb" as if we had asked if they contained cat meat instead. We ended up only having one round of drinks and heading out. It will be a while before we come back in again. read more

Came twice in a week since it has been years since I had basque food and was in town visiting family. Dined with a group of friends so it was a total of 4 of us and we shared table with another 4 of friendly folk. For both my meals the initial appetizers were solid, both nights had an amazing salad, one night had some beef tongue which was quite tasty and second night don't recall. There was a prime rib special the first night which I decided not to get since the menu had a generous roasted lamb which I was set on and ended being not so generous and more of a stew than a roast. I regretted that decision immensely as two of my friends got it and it looked and tasted marvelous and this is coming from someone who LOVES prime rib. I was hoping they would have this choice the second time I went but unfortunately they did not. Had a sirloin or NY steak the second go around and it was alright. Desert was a choice of ice cream or a cheese platter which is included with the family meal selection. The service was OK, first night was pretty attentive but second night took awhile to be seated despite it being fairly empty and having reservations for both nights. Pecan punch were solid and I would go back but not something I MUST visit when I return home as opposed to some of the other places. Also came out to $40ish a person which isn't too expensive but personally I think better value could be found else where. read more

First off, I like what they did with the remodel. The space feels more modern, open, and the exposed brick creates a nice esthetic. Unfortunately, last nights meal was just average and made me wish the place had never changed ownership. As for the meal, the soup came out piping hot and was liked by everyone in my party. It had a nice spice to it and was the highlight of the 7 course basque-style dinner. For my entree I ordered the prime rib but was underwhelmed with it's flavoring. The portion was fine, not huge but adequate, but there were no juices at all. It wasn't dry but the best prime ribs bleed when you cut it, this one did not. Of course like any true prime rib aficionado, I asked for horseradish and the server brought me out a serving of a creamed horseradish-esque spread. It tasted like cream of nothing. It possessed no discernible kick and I wasn't sure what it really was. I would humbly request management offer a creamed spread AND raw horseradish. The creamed variety was tasteless, bland and did not compliment the under-seasoned cut of beef. Also, the server did not offer anyone at the table roasted garlic with our beef, which I thought was odd. It's been my experience that is a standard accompaniment to most lamb and beef dishes in Basque cuisine. Overall, the beef entrees were a big disappointment. The table enjoyed the beef tongue course, even though it didn't come out of the kitchen piping hot. Our Picon's were prepared perfectly and went down like water after the first 2 "challenging" sips. Those were the other highlights I suppose Louis management has created a nice ambiance in the remodeled space and has a nice bar setup, but what good is a Basque restaurant without kick-ass beef? I will probably try Louis again but I'm tempted to stay away until I hear more positive word of mouth. read more

When I called to tell them a roach crawled out of the box they put our takeout order in, all they did was blame it on the produce provider and said they don't have a roach problem at the restaurant. The atmosphere is interesting. There is a bar when you first walk in, towards the back are all of the tables, where you will be seated with other diners. We went when there weren't that many people, so my group got a table to ourselves. They serve picon punch, which is a traditional basque drink. Picon Punch is made up of Amer Picon (a bitter orange spirit), grenadine, soda water, and optional brandy, topped with lemon peel. Some people hate it; someone people love it. I actually didn't mind it, but it definitely gives you that warm/I'm getting drunk feel. You get a ridiculous amount of food here - so come hungry! Like other reviewers have said, you get bread & butter, french fries, salad, and beans (I think soup too...) Each dinner gets a choice of entrees (salmon, sweatbreads, lamb, steak, etc.) Also included is red wine and ice cream for dessert. read more

Louis's Basque Corner, like any other Basque restaurant I've been to, offers an experience. And it's sort of hilarious. The food is mediocre--not bad, just not particularly great--but it's worth coming for the experience. Dinner is a whole production. A series of prix fixe dishes, served family style. Really straight-forward stuff...bread, green salad, french fries, a roast, pasta. Not sure what qualifies any of these items as Basque--maybe it's just the combination and service style? Whatever it is, give it a try, at least once. Service is friendly, and you'll be seated an communal tables, which is fun, especially if you're dining alone. Highly recommend coming early for happy hour and some Picon punch (Amer Picon, which is a bitter orange liquer, brandy, grenadine, and soda) at the bar. They're stronger than you think, so watch out. If you're looking for something else to drink, head elsewhere. But if you're in the mood for Picon punch (or if you've never tried it), check it out! Finally made it to this place, my husband had fond memories as a kid living in Reno. The food, staff (Kevin and Parker, did not catch waitress name) did not disappoint. We throughly enjoyed the family style serving, allowing us to meet and interact with others, one of the gentleman at table even shared the history of the Basque region and his culture. Whoa...what? I haven't reviewed Louis'!!?? This is a staple for us whenever we return to Reno. I can't give anything less than 5 stars because no other experience has ever come close to this restaurant for us. The service is usually good, company is good and the food is always good. The drinks are killer and really the best part of the experience to round it all out. We've had some great stories come out of this place and I can't say that about too many other restaurants....like ever. The salmon and lamb chops were great. However, the prime rib and New York steak were suboptimal from what we had previously experienced at Louie's. The prime rib was tough and dry and the steak was very fatty. All other aspects of the meal were good and the service was very good. This was the first time we had experienced disappointment at Louie's and we will be a bit reluctant to go back. read more

I'm right behind Karla T.'s review of this place. She said it well: the service is unceremonious and the food not so great. Note to self: if you see Guy Fieri's mug on the wall when you enter a restaurant, you should turn around and leave immediately. His dumb show has been to the Gold n' Silver and some other mediocre joints around town, which are other places that are riding the "we've been here forever so we must be legit" vibe that Louie's has been. This place is not legit and it is entirely overpriced. I will say this: I was down for the ambiance and communal dining experience. No problems there. I was with a large group of friends when we went so Louie's was a good place to go. At least there was ample food and no arguing over the bill when it came because we all pay the same thing. So here's what: our table orders another carafe of wine (which we paid for, to my understanding) after our allotted first round (which was not nearly enough for 7 people), and received a very watered down version of the first carafe. After much plying of the staff, someone finally admitted to watering down the Franzia and gave us a new carafe of boxed wine. Seriously, how cheap can you be? Second offense was this: fiancee, my friend and I all opted for the lamb. I served finacee a few of the pieces of the front of the roast, and then took the next few pieces for myself. My pieces were delicious, and then I noticed fiancee making a sour face. He couldn't finish his meat, telling me it tasted old. Thinking he was crazy (cause my bits of lamb were just right), I ate the meat from his plate. It was clearly from a different roast from what I ate, but had been mixed with the new meat. If they admitted to watering down wine, it's not too far of a stretch to think that they would mix previously cooked meat with new meat. It was gross. Conclusion: we dropped $64 w/ tip between fiancee and myself to eat a meal that had been padded with old food and watery wine. I am glad to say that I have finally visited this "Reno institution", and displeased to say said visit made me violently ill upon returning home (ala Eddie's Supper Club in Great Falls, MT; see my review). Not recommended unless you dig dropping serious money on what fiancee calls "old people food". read more
