Found this place by accident and so happy we did! After leaving Eagles Falls and with no cell service, we weren't sure what or if anything would be out there for us. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly hostess (who continued to check on us throughout our visit and politely answered our questions about the area). I tried the "special " drink which happened to be an aqua fresca with prosecco. For $17, I was happy to see the pour was of decent size and in a large wine glass. It was a refreshing drink and nicely balanced. We shared a Caesar salad (excellent!) and a Hot Hawaiian pizza (also very good). This was an excellent place to enjoy some good food, drinks and good company. read more

Ate here twice in two weeks recently. Loved the very tentative and friendly female bartender. She helped me pick a red wine that I would enjoy drinking, and I did. My friend and I tried the Wedge salad and for pizzas we ordered The Local and Hot Hawaiian. Everything was delicious! Their ranch dressing is house made and so delicious I could drink it from a glass. Ok I wouldn't do that but it is that good. For dessert, the Warm Foccacia Bread Putting is a MUST. I enjoy sitting at the bar and catching up with other locals or chatting with the tourists. I'm looking forward to my next pizza craving in Tahoma because I know exactly where I'm headed! read more

This year's review is about the same as the last. Third visit, one year apart. Accompanied by friends who live in the area. We arrived about 6:30PM on a Wednesday night in late July and there was a 30 minute wait. The place was packed with lots of people waiting outside. We bought a bottle of Dog & Bear Chardonnay for 3 and an IPA draft for one. We ordered 2 pizzas for the 4 of us and that was more than enough. The pizzas are excellent with lots of unusual toppings. Two of us split a house salad that was very good. Everything was 5 star except the high noise level. Wednesday is pizza night with a limited menu but we had not regrets. They've got this Frankenstein concoction--NewGlory pale ale cut with Mammoth Brewing Co.'s sour--that tastes like someone melted down a bag of sour gummy worms and decided it belonged in a pint glass. Sounds wrong, right? But it works. Sharp, tart, neon-bright--it wakes you up, kicks your palate in the teeth, and makes you remember that beer doesn't always have to play by the rules. Then there's the pizza. Mushroom pizza, to be precise. And because we're the kind of degenerates who always want more of the good stuff, we doubled down and added sausage. Earthy, savory, almost meaty in its richness--this wasn't just a pizza, it was a sermon on the beauty of this melody of mushrooms and meat. Service is excellent and we couldn't be more grateful for their help navigating this beautiful menu. Fun place. Always seem busy that must mean something. Eric to my pizza to go order. Very friendly. Sat a bar to have a couple glasses of wine while I waited. Watching this team work together was awesome. Everyone was pleasant and professional. Got pizzas back to house. 2 pepperoni and 1 Margarita. These were really good pies. There was 1 piece left, that was my breakfast the next morning. Place is clean and fun. I forgot to take pictures but our food looked like the other pizza pics. I do recommend this place. read more

What might make this place so fantastic is how incredibly unsuspecting it is, tucked off two-thirds of the way from South Lake to Tahoe City. It didn't appear on any of my restaurant searches when I was trip planning, but thankfully our friends had been there and recommended it for dinner. I took one look at the menu and knew a legit chef had crafted it. The menu is a serious work art and everything we had was delicious - truffle popcorn, deviled eggs, "The Local" pizza and octopus, plus we tried our friends' yellow fin crudo. Every dish was fresh with brilliant flavors and thoughtful ingredients. Our server was very attentive, as well. We didn't make room for dessert but I have no doubt they would've been tasty. The house ice cream today was lemon bar flavor, which sounded great. We'll be hard pressed, I think, to have a better meal during the rest of our visit to Tahoe! read more

We randomly stumbled on this restaurant. Thank goodness we did. The service was very quick and efficient. We were seated and served pretty quickly . The food was very fresh and delicious. If you're in the mood for pizza I def recommend getting the truffle pizza. The smell, texture and the way the pizza was cooked was absolutely perfect. The truffle pizza will def leave a long lasting impression on us. My husband doesn't typically avoids anything with mushrooms but it was so delicious he helped me finish the whole pizza. Place is a gem in South Lake Tahoe, after a day of boarding, since you can't find much like it. Def Bay Area prices and it's alright for what you get. Really paying for the cozy experience, but probably a little too expensive for what you get. Coppa pizza and affogato were the best things from everything we ordered. Mushroom pizza was ok but lacked flavor. Wedge salad was good but not sure it's worth $17, same with brussel sprouts for the portion. Owner served us and he was sweet! Beer options are many things you'd expect from your average tavern. Nice to have some choice tho. read more

*TAKEOUT REVIEW* After a day of boating on the lake, we wanted to do something simple for dinner, so we decided to do takeout pizzas from The Dog and Bear. We ordered 4 pizzas, a couple of cheese, carnivore, and a pepperoni. While the pizza was fine, there was nothing really stand out about anything we eat. It felt like it could've been a bit crispier and thinner. The cheese/pizza dough ratio was leaning more towards the dough and the sauce was on the sweeter side. It did what it needed to do though, and we were full afterwards. We got a cheese pizza with extra cheese, which was the move for me. The pizzas here start around $24 and goes up from there for the specialities. Definitely would try again but for dine-in so I can experience it fresh out of the oven. read more

Went to the Thursday night Happy Hour and started with six oysters. Best I've had in a long time. We ordered a farro salad which we should have sent back. It was salty and the greens were limp! Yuck. We followed up with the duck confit taco board which was original and very tasty. Waitress brought us a scoop of homemade pistachio ice cream to make up for the salty salad. It was fantastic! The pizza was absolutely terrific. Usually, i don't eat the crust and prefer the toppings. The crust on this pizza was very very good. I'm a 50 year Tahoma gal and have seen several restaurants come and go in our little West Shore berg: Burgers, Basque, Mexican, Steakhouse, Pizza... the first restaurant here that comes close to rivaling anything in the Bay Area is The Dog & Bear. EVERYTHING here is amazing. I can't afford to eat here every night I'm up at the cabin, but I would if I could. Nonetheless, I've tried several menu items, favorites of which are the Caesar Salad (anchovy bread crumbs!!) the Pig & Fig pizza, and the Confit Duck Leg. I have to mention that one of the most delicious items on the menu is the Sunchoke Bisque, but be forewarned: it may give you... how to put it gently... it may give you some air. And if you already deal with any issues in that regard, I advise avoiding sunchokes altogether. But I digress... There is quite a bit of seating at Dog & Bear, but the tables are always filled, so be prepared to wait a bit on the weekends. It's worth it! read more

We've had a cabin in Tahoma for over 35 years and have been loyal patrons of Dog & Bear since they opened. We've always loved the great food and customer service. However, during our recent visit, we ordered a pizza and decided to have some wine. The manager mentioned there was a special for a bottle of wine for $25, so we ordered it. When the bill arrived, we were shocked to see a charge of $120 for the bottle of wine. The manager claimed he had said it was $25 per glass, which was never clearly communicated. I would never spend that kind of money on a bottle of wine at a pizza restaurant. We ordered a margherita pizza and what we believed to be a $25 bottle of wine and instead were left feeling misled and very disappointed. read more

A really good choice if you're in the Tahoma area! My family came here before arriving at our Airbnb to grab dinner and the pizzas were delicious. Good as leftovers too! It's interesting they don't accept online orders after a certain time, but I guess it's understandable since they might get busy at night. They weren't busy that night and the pizzas took about 20 mins so it wasn't too bad. We got a veggie pizza and a pizza for the kids. This place was really close to the Airbnb too! It's pretty small and the parking lot is small too so I would imagine it'd be hard to find parking sometimes if it got busy. Definitely would recommend if you're vacationing in the area :) read more

The Dog and Bear has taken over the old Angela's and reinvented the space. It is expanded and features a long bar and added seating. They still have pizza but they have a much more upscale menu. Linda got a pepperoni pizza and I got the sausage. Both were delicious. About 14" with a nice crisp crust and generous toppings. Eric ordered the scallops; he said they were by far the best he had ever had - and he has had his share. Eric was disappointed that the dish only had two scallops, he called it a nice appetizer. The owner made him a third and told him to let the server know how many he wanted on his next visit. Tonight was the first night of a new menu. They also have a good assortment of locally brewed beer. About 16 to 20 on tap. Dinner was about $30 each for the entree or per pizza. The place does get busy and loud as the evening goes on. It's been awhile since I have been hunting for pizza spots. What better place than somewhere that invited a 12 year reunion (yes, haven't been to Tahoe in 12 years ZOMG). So I went pizza hunting, and the pizza pictures from The Dog and Bear were enough to convince me we had to try it. We got there around 7:45 PM, and we were seated immediately. The place has a really cool vibe and decor...I can't think of where it reminds me of but maybe sort of Napa-esque combined with Tahoe and a little SF thrown in. The menu is pretty small, but that was fine with me because I only had a mind for pizza. We decided to order the four cheese pizza because it had lemon-herb ricotta. I go crazy for ricotta on my pizza. The pizza was really good!! I loved the crust. It wasn't really like a Neapolitan style pizza with a light, bubbly crust but it was delicious. It was doughy with a little crunch and something kind of like cornmeal on the bottom that I couldn't place. Kind of like wood fired minus the Neapolitan. Just know that all these pizzas have a lot of cheese! Especially the four cheese. I noticed the others they were carrying out had more cheese than the typical Italian pizza. The dog and Bear restaurant has really Great food. Thoughtfully prepared with unique flavors and presentation. We popped down after The boat show and had an amazing Culinary adventure. Soo good we asked to talk to the chief. He is a 37 year culinary graduate from San Francisco with Great ideas and original food combinations. For example the duck and Kimchi loaded fries and Hamachi Crudo were fabu. We don't stop there. We actually were a party of six of us and sampled much of the menu starting with the mixed marinated olives and the Burrata cheese plate. Then we went exotic with watermelon carpaccio and shiahito peppers . 2 pizzas- Pig and peach and the tavern sausage which included artichokes and olives fennel and red onion plus more. Loved the artichoke hearts and avocado but it could use an additional texture/flavor part such as toasted walnuts. Meat lovers pizza was gooood!! Homemade crust was light and just right thickness. Lots of good stuff on top made it most satisfying. All the servers seemed to help each other out which I just love! That means they enjoy being there and their delightful personalities reflect that. First off, as soon as I got to the restaurant, I was rudely told that they were busy. Fine- I asked to be put on the waiting list. It took 40 minutes after first being told 20, then 30. I, the customer, had to keep going back in periodically to see if my table was ready because the waitlist doesn't have your phone number, just your name and party size. The waitlist was a genuine LIST, not a system that lets you know time or if your table is ready. Whatever we wait, tell me why the way the gentleman decided to tell me my table was ready by staring me down from inside the restaurant and walking away. My friend let me know they believed that was for us, and I followed him. We sat down on hard chairs and then waited for our waiter. Mind you, all of the above was just annoying; the next part is what made me come home and write a review. The waitress was so incredibly rude, not a moment of eye contact. Pushed food at us clumsily, then walked away. Short and cut with basic food service manners. The food was subpar at best, the pizza was a pizza... that's it. I didn't feel like I was in Italy again, just like I went to Mods Pizza. That would normally be fine IF I DIDN'T SPEND 30 DOLLARS FOR EACH PIZZA. Once again, I ate the food I got and didn't complain, as Tahoe is known for being expensive. The waitress rudely asked if we were going to buy more food, which is hilarious thinking back on as the menu has changed, it has pretty much just pizza with overcharged snacks. I looked at her and said, 'We're doing some dessert.' She looked and said, 'Okay well, wave me down.' Then she walked away. Miss Ma'am, Me saying that was me telling you I'm ready. Fine, we waited and ordered later. The dessert was shocking. The banana pudding was covered in salted caramel that was all salt no caramel. My mouth hurts from whatever was in there and I don't have food allergies that are in the dessert. My friends also had the same reaction.
